My 6th MBA trip and once again an amazing, memorable trip. Stina the guide was the absolute best - she really took care of us, was really engaging, very knowledgeable and made the trip very memorable. Saw so much in a short space of time - was a great mix of going off the beaten track as well as key landmarks which inevitably attracts tourists. Was a perfect mix of waterfalls, geysers, hiking, mountains, natural thermal pools and rivers. The glacier trek was a lot more exciting and formidable than I thought it would be, the golden waterfall was incredible and bathing in the thermal Reykjadalur river as well as in Fontana and Laugarvatn Lake was brilliant (and so much better than the touristy lagoons). Also the perfect add-on trip to the Laugavegur trip MBA does - you really get a brilliant adventure and experience what Iceland has to offer, the landscape of which is incredibly diverse and beautiful.

This was an amazing trip and our host Stina was knowledgeable and passionate about Iceland. She shared stories about Icelandic folklore as we travelled to locations and explained how the different landscapes were formed through volcanic eruptions. She kept us entertained as we hiked the waterfalls and beautiful scenery. Iceland is really a wonderful place, highly recommend visiting - I hope to visit again as one trip is not enough to see everything. The natural hot springs were the highlight and we enjoyed bathing in the natural sauna after a hike through the majestic landscape. The Laugarvatn hostel catered very well for vegans and Reykjavik city and Keflavik airport have vegan restaurants/ options.

Take a short drive to Hvalfjörður - the Fjord of the Whales - and hit the trailhead for the hike to Glymur, the second-highest waterfall in Iceland at 198m. The falls are only accessible by foot, over rivers and past caves, with amazing views to the top. Head back down the other side and drive on to the Thingvellir National Park to hike along the fault lines that mark the mid-Atlantic rift of the earth’s crust, before reaching Öxarárfoss Waterfall. In the evening there's the option to head to Fontana Geothermal Spa (entrance fee not included - ISK4500 per person) on the edge of Laugarvatn Lake for a soak in the baths and steam rooms - brave souls can take a cold water plunge in the lake itself.

Today's adventures are packed full of glaciers, waterfalls and volcanic sand beaches on Iceland's beautiful southern coastline. First up is Sólheimajökull Glacier, where your guide will lead you out onto the glacier itself, hiking with crampons through a frozen wonderland of white, blue and crystal clear ice. You'll get up close and personal with deep crevasses and water cauldrons as you make your way across the glacier. Later on, you'll drive a little to the east to visit Reynisfjara, a wild stretch of coastline with volcanic sand beaches and spectacular basalt sea stacks. You'll stroll along Black Beach (yes, the sand is black!) to see the spooky plane wreck there. On the way back to Laugarvatn, you’ll stop to admire the waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, completing your waterfall trilogy for this part of Iceland.

    Day 4

Geysir, Gullfoss and hot river bathing

Climb into the hills, meander past small volcanic craters and hot springs before taking a dip in the thermal river of Reykjadalur. Later you'll drive back to Reykjavík and head into town for your final evening.

This isn't a point-to-point trek so luggage storage isn't an issue. Each day, you can leave your main bag in your room at the accommodation in Laugarvatn or if you prefer you can store it in the van; you'll only take a day pack out with you each day.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 95kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
