Climb up to the crest of Boca do Risco and follow the insanely spectacular trail zig-zagging along vertical cliffs all the way down to the shores of Porto da Cruz. You’ll navigate some short exposed sections and see some of the best views in Madeira - think lush greenery, dense forest, wildflowers and vistas of the ocean blue below - often likened to Jurassic Park or Hawaii. Enjoy a swim at Porto da Cruz before a short transfer to the hotel in Santo da Serra. This evening you can celebrate the first stage of your island traverse!

Soon the trail dives deeper into the laurel trees, immersing you in lush green surroundings of wildflowers, ferns, and giant trees. Learn about the local wildlife, eyes open for the rare endemic long-toed pigeon. Relax for a second night in your rural accommodation in the peaceful village of Santo da Serra, finishing the day with a delicious meal and some local wine.

Fuel up with breakfast and then hit the trails again after a short road transfer to the start of the trail in Poiso. Today you'll hike Madeira's exhilarating PR1 path, traversing the island's three highest peaks – Pico do Arieiro (5,961ft), Pico das Torres (6,073ft) and Pico Ruivo (6,109ft). Also known as the 'stairway to heaven', this unforgettable hike is the most famous on the island, and for good reason! The trail straddles high mountain ridgelines, narrow pathways, steep stairways, and man-made tunnels carved into rock which you'll navigate with the use of a headlamp. You’ll be surrounded by the best mountain scenery Madeira has to offer all day, and have the chance to enjoy the sunset from Pico Ruivo, weather permitting. At the end of this epic day, you’ll kick back in comfort at Achada do Teixeira, a comfortable mountain hut located at the start of the PR 1.2 trail.

Then set off on a spectacular hike over peaks, along the mountainous central massif, surrounded by the Laurisilva Forest and cascading waterfalls. Admire the majestic valleys of Curral das Freiras, climbing onto an exposed ridgeline that provides sweeping views across a stunning and less-trodden part of the island. Enjoy a well-deserved afternoon at leisure surrounded by the green mountains of Encumeada or hop in a taxi to visit the enchanting seaside town of São Vicente.

Note: Please read the FAQ on enforced itinerary contingencies that are currently in place, and relate to this day.

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

If you are flying into Madeira on Day 1, please ensure your flight lands by 6:20 PM at the latest to meet your host and the rest of the group in time for the initial briefing and dinner. There is no arrival transfer included in the trip because it's really easy to make your own way to both of the start hotels - Hotel White Waters in Machico or Albergaria o Professor in Santa Cruz: it's a short journey from the airport by taxi (10 minutes). Your host will re-confirm the lodging, meeting point, and timings prior to the trip.

At the end of your trip, you will be dropped at the airport around 1:00 PM. We recommend booking a flight that departs no earlier than 3:00 PM to enjoy a morning at leisure in Porto Moniz. If you are extending your trip and wish to be dropped off in Funchal city center instead of the airport on Day 7, this will be possible free of charge. Once you have booked your flights, please provide your host with the information via the passenger information form.

Travel options

There are regular flights to Madeira from major airports across the UK and Europe. If you choose to arrive early, there are regular buses across the island that you can use to explore. Our local host has a wealth of information about accommodation and activities – please do not hesitate to contact them for advice before planning your experience.

    Stay

    Seaside hotels and rural guesthouses

For five nights you'll stay in comfortable, family-run hotels or rural guesthouses either in the interior of the island (surrounded by mountains), or down by the coast (walking distance from the sea). Rooms are allocated on a twin-share basis and come with ensuite facilities. You’ll usually stay at Hotel White Waters in Machico or the Albergaria o Professor in Santa Cruz (for the first night), Hotel Estalagem a Quinta in Santo da Serra (for two nights), Hotel Encumeada in Encumeada, and Hotel Salgueiro in Porto Moniz.

On some departures, your host may reserve alternative accommodation of a similar standard in different locations, dependent on availability. Several departure dates throughout the year will start in Santa Cruz at the Hotel Albergaria o Professor, as opposed to Machico - your host will let you know well in advance if this applies to your departure date. Achada do Teixeira Mountain Hut

Enjoy the opportunity to snooze at the nicest mountain hut in Madeira – the Achada do Teixeira Mountain Hut. Located at the start of the PR1.2 (the Pico Ruivo hiking trail), the hut features a fantastic cafe-restaurant where you will eat breakfast and dinner, and the rooms are shared, but comfortable. The hut has only four rooms in total: one 8-bed room, one 5-bed room and two other rooms. Where possible, the rooms will be allocated on a same-sex basis, but occasionally the make-up of the group may mean that it has to be mixed-sex.

Please note: On this night, your main luggage won’t be brought to the lodging. The lodge is small and shared, so you’ll need to carry a backpack with just the essentials for the hike, overnight stay and the next day. Your luggage will be safely stored and ready for you when you return.

Trip level explained

Level 4

Moderate-Challenging

This trek requires a good level of fitness. You must be capable of hiking all day up paths of moderate difficulty with steep, loose sections as well as some exposed paths (those with severe vertigo may struggle). There are a couple of very long days with some steady climbs which will make the going quite challenging in parts, but the views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you, and then a small backpack to carry personal items during each day of hiking.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

A very well organised trip, and a fantastic way to see Madeira, despite the trail closures currently in place. Our guide, Pedro, was excellent. Only downside is the hotels which are very basic but plenty of food provided.

The trip was a great combination of walking, learning about the island and meeting great people. You really have the opportunity to see everything - the coast, the forests, the mountains, the rock pools and black sand beaches. There isn’t a better way to experience it all in such a relaxed and friendly environment.

A mixed trip. Madeira has some genuinely beautiful walks, though it's not quite as spectacular as the hype suggests. Summary: Around two of the five days were genuinely great; the rest were not particularly beautiful or hard walks. Most of us expected it to be Coast to coast and hut to hut when in fact we had to get into a taxi at the start and finish most days, often for 45 mins to get to the next hotel. And the hotels were some of the worst I have stayed in. Walking: The main issue was just not enough walking. If you are expecting full days you will be disappointed. Most days we started at 9:30 and were done by 2:30 and our group was ordinarily fit. There are longer and harder routes and I think MBA should have done more to adapt the walks to our group, which they had to do anyway due to some paths being closed. Hotels: One good hotel in the middle, the rest were very basic — food and rooms both below what you'd expect at this price. Guide: Excellent — adaptable and knowledgeable, but not essential. Madeira is pretty busy and most people rent somewhere and walk everyday. You dont need a guide for what we did. Honest conclusion: you'd get more for your money staying in a well-located Airbnb and self-guiding. The walks aren't technical and the signage is good. I've done MBA trips before that were genuinely worth the premium. This one wasn't.

This was our first booking with Much Better Adventures and it was a great trip. The guide, Pedro, was really friendly and knowledgable. The island is beautiful and the hikes were a mix of easy, challenging and interesting scenery. Make sure you pack for all weathers :) the packed lunches were great too.

A perfect week of hiking across Madeira. Coastal views, lush forests, and epic mountain hikes. I was nervous about travelling in a group of strangers, but I needn’t have been. Everyone was so lovely and friendly.

  • James J.

The food was very substandard. Day 1 offers a choice of fried fish, steak, chicken or vegetarian. Nearly everyone chose the fish. Day 2 everyone was served the same fish unless you had a food restriction. Day 3 everyone was served a chicken quarter. On day 4 we had a chicken quarter again, with no options presented. MBA can do better than this for the price paid. The guide and hiking was superb, but the food left a lot to be desired.

Fantastic week with a great and varied bunch of people. Loved the walking and talking! Some of the trails were a bit monotonous in the forests, but I gather we weren't able to do the normal route due to the trail closures. The cliff hugging levadas are really something to behold. Personally I preferred the coastal and high mountain paths that gave us plenty of photo opps, and the night in the refuge was probably our best night, although the Hotel Encumeada is also an incredible location. Our guide Isabelle was great, and did her best to manage the varying fitness levels in our group and make sure everyone was happy with the pace and food. You get plenty of chance to socialise in the evenings and chat. Overall, it was a really fun way to spend a week walking in amazing scenery without having to stress over organising it yourself. If you've never been to Madeira and like walking, IMHO this is the best way to discover the island. Highly recommended!

What an amazing week of hiking in beautiful Madeira. Our guide Isabel was wonderful and we had 5 fantastic days of walking. Two things that keep this from being 5 stars from me- with the trail closures it isn't really a coast to coast traverse, more some awesome Madeira highlights with a fair amount of driving to transfer to accommodation some days. Hopefully that will change soon with trails apparently beginning to reopen soon. And one hotel we stayed at 2 nights was very unwelcoming which was a bit of a shame- maybe worth finding somewhere else @mba as this seemed to be a well known issue. On the other hand the mountain hut night was a massive highlight including sunrise over mountains and by far the best food of the week.

We had the very best time on this hike. The people and our guide (Isabel) made it, of course, but the trip overall was brilliant. Although we had to change the original route (through no fault of MBA) it took little from our experience. Madeira was beautiful and varied. I was a little wary of the accommodation at "the hut" before I left but that turned out to be the best accommodation of all. I can't recommend this trip enough x

  • Daniel C.

Firstly, our guide Isobel was superb. She tried to allow everyone to walk at their own pace as much as possible and kept us informed of the plan for each day. Our drivers were great and surprised us with some homemade poncha on the last day, you know you’re in for a treat when someone whips out a sprite bottle of unknown liquid and some shot glasses. The second hotel was fine but the owner is a bit prickly, this we’re told is going to be addressed in future. The other accommodations are all fine, don’t expect luxury and you won’t be disappointed. The “mountain hut” was a surprise, Diogo the manager is a gem and the food there was excellent. Most importantly though the walking was great. If you’re a serious hiker/trail runner take a look at the distances and elevation changes as you may not be entirely satiated. For someone like me who enjoys a moderate days hiking followed by a cold beer in good company it was perfect. The terrain was very varied, we got a good taste of what the island has to offer, and we saw some truly spectacular and unique landscapes. The icing on the cake was a fantastic diverse group of people. Plenty of good conversation and laughter.

    Ashleigh M. May 2026
We had an amazing week with a really special group of people. The trip covers the best parts of the island in a short time, and our guide Isabel was able to teach us a lot about the local flora and fauna along the way. I was really impressed with the daily packed lunches and MBA took any feedback about accommodation seriously in real time. Overall, really well organised, and a great way to spend a week in Madeira.

I had a great first experience and would highly recommend to anyone! Our guide Isabel was amazing - she was incredibly knowledgeable and made the trip more fun! The views were amazing and she gave us great local recommendations as well. I have very severe food allergies and celiac disease and all along the way I felt like everyone was very helpful in making sure I had plenty of safe food to eat.

I just finished the 6-night Coast to Coast Traverse of Madeira trip and loved it. This was my first Much Better Adventures trip, so I was a bit nervous how it would go. It certainly exceeded my expectations and was a great value for the money. The group size was perfect (12 plus our guide), a great range of ages and a lovely group of people. We were all about the same level and a good mix of single travelers and two friends traveling together. I believe many of us will stay in touch long-term. Pedro, our guide, was wonderful. A native of Madeira, he knows everything! He led us safely and at a great pace, taught us about the natural features, history and culture of the island, and was a joy to spend time with. He gave us helpful tips on what to pack and what to expect each day. I am looking forward to signing up for another adventure soon!
  • All round amazing!

This was my first MBA trip and I will definately book with them again. Everything was well planned and organised, the guide was fantastic, the accommodation was great (except for one night in a hotel that could do with an upgrade) and food was plentiful!
  • Up in the Clouds!

    Husain V. April 2026
This is my 4th trip with MBA. This one was amazing! We were fortunate to have great weather, no rain, other than mist while in the clouds. Our tour guide, Nuno, was amazing! Super helpful, knowledgeable, and a bit of a comedian. The views are something else. The lunches provided were the best lunches I’ve had out of all the trips I’ve done. Good was also good overall. The accommodation was also pretty comfy. Highly recommend!
  • Madeira was Amazing!

We had such a great experience! Our group and our guide, Nuno, were the best!
  • Fantastic trek and experience

    Timothy H. April 2026
Our coast-to-coast trek of Madeira was a wonderful experience! We were fortunate to have good weather most days, with almost no rain and moderate temperatures. The accommodations were good, the food was good and plentiful, and our transportation was on time and efficient. The hiking was at times difficult with the climbs and descents, but we were expecting this and were able to accomplish with nothing more than a few aches and pains. The best part of the trek though, was the people! Our group was diverse, from different countries and parts of the world, and our tour guide was fantastic! All the people in our group of 12 were like-minded hikers/trekkers and it was enjoyable getting to know them all. Our guide Nuno was excellent, and has extensive knowledge of Madeira and its history, geology, zoology, and biology. Every day we learned many new things while we were trekking. Unfortunately not all the trails were open so there were some work-arounds, but that is nothing that Much Better Adventures has any control over. Would definitely recommend this trek!
  • Overall I was happy with

Overall I was happy with the trip. I would book much better adventures again. Some accomodations were really nice, a few were not. The food was excellent including the lunch boxes were nice. The guide was great but I would have wished for more structured communication/announcements of schedules and plans.
  • Marvellous Madeira

    Tracey G. April 2026
The scenery is truly stunning…. . as long as you have the weather to view it and we were particularly lucky as the forecast just before was dire!!! As I am a solo traveler and with little idea of direction, having a guided hiking holiday was so easy. And it is hiking not sauntering around 😀 im a keen walker at home but nowhere in my local area is practice for the steep trails of Madeira. Our guides , Joao and Marianna were brilliant. Not only are they so knowledgeable and bilingual but they also had great sense of humour. The hotel accommodation was clean and practical. Im happy to recommend this trip.
  • great hike!

A lovely trip, awesome routes, even when cloudy (see the video!). The accommodation was great (except for the Valley View hotel), and we were well fed.
  • Madeira Coast to Coast in the sunshine

    Chris S. April 2026
An unforgettable adventure on the Coast to Coast Madeira trek with Much Better Adventures. João and Mariana were brilliant guides, the weather was glorious sunshine throughout, and the group was wonderfully friendly with great camaraderie. The mountain lodge stay and sunrise were real highlights, and the food was excellent, especially the packed lunches.
  • Excellent trip

    Catherine G. April 2026
I had a fabulous time in Madeira. The scenery is stunning and changes all the time, along with the weather. Puedro was a great guide and the group were really fun. The trip was very well organised too.
  • March in Madeira!

    Elaine H. April 2026
I had a great time in Madeira. Unfortunately the weather wasn't on our side, so we spent much of the week cold and wet, but the group were a fun and interesting bunch of people, who kept spirits high. The island was lovely and I feel that had the weather of been better, it would have only amplified its beauty. Puedro was a really good guide, too.

    Grace H. March 2026
A lovely week away. The weather was very challenging which meant some highlights of the itinerary were missed; not a fault of MBA and our guide managed to accommodate us as best as possible given route and road closures. Views and routes are amazing from what we did see, and the accommodation was generally good too.
  • Beautiful and great hiking, not-so-great

    Dawn R. March 2026
Beautiful and great hiking, not-so-great weather. Would have liked to know to expect wind, rain, cold and mud so that I packed better. You can’t get good weather forecasts for the places you hike so even if it’s sunny in Funchal you may be freezing where you hike. This information should be more explicit. Tour guide was great and really had our backs.
  • A perfect week of self-care and natural beauty

    Natalia M. March 2026
Many memories were made during this trip with my friend in beautiful Madeira! My goal was to re-set, learn something new, look after my body and soul, meet new people and laugh. All these were achieved despite disappointing weather conditions that are atypical to this season. The company worked hard and managed to adapt the routes and to keep them as adequate as possible in distance and difficulty. I managed to do some sketching in the rain:) Lunch was the best meal of the day with a local bakery catering healthy nutritious packed lunches. My choice of fish for dinner was always excellent! I loved moving around the island exploring new places and staying in various hotels. Those were clean although my back was not accustomed to a few hard mattresses. Everyone from the team was kind and knowledgable. I definitely learnt a lot about Madeira and it was the perfect way to celebrate my birthday.
  • Madeira coast to coast

    Blanka J. March 2026
I attended the Madeira coast to coast trip in mid March. I wasn’t sure what to expect as this was my first trip with Much better adventures. We ended up being a group of women which turned out great fun. Some were super fit and the rest just normal. The weather wasn’t on our side & it rained a lot, even snowed at the very top. Lots of our planned trails got closed which was disappointing but luckily our guide managed to find alternative hikes which were still challenging & very spectacular. Thank you! The packed lunches were amazing and very tasty. Accommodation was mostly good - warm & clean with a hot shower. The drivers taking us to the start of each hike & picking us at the end of the day were really nice with a big smile & a helping hand. All in all, I really enjoyed the trip & would happily book again.
  • Marvellous Madeira

Fantastic trip! Our guide, Puedro, the walks, the diversity of views, new friends. . . . everything was excellent! I'd do it all again in a heartbeat!
  • Gorgeous Island

    Karyn B. March 2026
Our family had such fun hiking with Puedro and the rest of our group across Madeira. Every day had something unique to see and experience—the levadas, waterfalls, coastlines, cloud covered peaks. It was a bit cold and rainy, but the weather nor the trail closures could get in the way of having had a great adventure with our new trail friends.

FAQs

Wildfires in Madeira in August 2024 affected the trails to Pico Arieiro, Pico Ruivo, and also the Encumeada region. Trails normally used on Day 4 (Poiso to Pico Ruivo) and Day 5 (Pico Ruivo to Encumeada) have been partially closed since the fires. Safety comes first, and due to the current lack of vegetation on these trails, the risk of collapse is still very high, making them dangerous to use. The local authorities have been making progress toward reopening the trails, and they are anticipated to reopen at some point in 2026, but no fixed completion date has been confirmed as yet (updated May 2026).

Your host in Madeira plans to re-establish the original trekking routes as soon as these trails open; but for now, there is a contingency plan in place as follows:

Day 4: Poiso – Pico Arieiro – Pedra Rija stairway – Pico Arieiro – transfer to Achada Teixeira – Pico Ruivo

Day 5: Pico Ruivo – Levada Caldeirão Verde – Santana – transfer to Encumeada

These are not substantial changes, and we are certain that they still offer a very similar overall experience for our groups. Aside from the adjustments to Day 4 and Day 5, the rest of the itinerary remains unchanged. Your host appeals for an understanding of this situation.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip, depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Madeiran and Portuguese cuisine is rooted in simple, hearty cooking shaped by the Atlantic climate and centuries of rural traditions. Meals often center around grilled meats, fresh fish and seafood, vegetables, soups, and bread, with olive oil, garlic, and herbs used generously. In Madeira, dishes such as vegetable soups, stews, grilled fish, salads, and side dishes are common, and meals are typically straightforward and filling rather than heavily processed.

While Portugal is not traditionally as plant-based as some Mediterranean countries, vegetarian and lactose-free diets are increasingly well understood. Vegan and gluten-free options are available but can be more limited and at times repetitive, particularly in smaller or more traditional restaurants. Your guide will help communicate your requirements, but it’s important to be flexible and prepared, especially in more rural or remote areas of the island.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian

-Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While many traditional Portuguese dishes include meat or fish, vegetarian options are available and may include vegetable soups, salads, omelets, rice and bean dishes, grilled vegetables, cheese, bread, and side dishes prepared with olive oil and herbs. Restaurants are generally happy to adapt dishes where possible; however, please note that vegetarian diets are not common in rural Madeira, so meal options in certain locations can be basic, repetitive, and lacking in protein. Packed lunches are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety.

Vegan

-Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Options may include vegetable soups (without meat stock), salads, rice, grilled or sautéed vegetables, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and dishes prepared with olive oil, garlic, and herbs. However, vegan-specific options are much more limited than vegetarian ones, particularly in traditional eateries, so flexibility is important and you should be aware that meal options can be basic, repetitive, and lacking in protein. Packed lunches are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Please do consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Kosher

-Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are extremely rare in Madeira and therefore a Kosher diet cannot be accommodated on this trip. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal

-Certified Halal meat is generally not available in Madeira. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below)

-Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options will be more limited than for those without dietary requirements. Portuguese cuisine frequently includes bread, pastries, and flour-based products, and awareness of cross-contamination can vary. Meals will typically rely on naturally gluten-free foods such as grilled fish or meat, vegetables, rice, potatoes, salads, and vegetables rather than specialist substitutes. Lunch boxes are however carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Gluten-free specialist products are generally limited outside major supermarkets, so please do consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose Free

-Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While dairy products such as cheese, butter, and milk are commonly used, many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can be prepared without dairy. These include grilled fish or meats, vegetable soups, rice dishes, vegetables, salads, and vegetables prepared with olive oil rather than butter or cream. Lunch boxes are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Please do consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.

This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

The tap water in Madeira is safe to drink. Please bring your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels, public fountains, and at restaurants to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

You can leave any excess luggage with your host for the duration of the adventure.

Madeira enjoys a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, usually with sunshine throughout most of the year. The driest and hottest months are between June and September, and the wettest period is between October and April. While the south of the island and coast are usually sunnier, colder temperatures, fog, or low clouds can be expected in the interior of the island and high peaks, so it's important to come equipped for all weather conditions (see our gear list for more info).

The weather in the mountains can be quite unpredictable with rain and cold temperatures likely at any time of the year and especially at higher altitudes above 4,921 ft. The best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with layers of clothing, sunscreen, and waterproofs. Your host will be monitoring the weather conditions during the course of the trip and will suggest alternative, safer hiking routes should the weather get really bad.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 153kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
