What is the food like?

Hotel taironaka, Cerviche, Colombia, Hotel

The typical cuisine in northern Colombia includes dishes made from rice, plantain, yucca, corn, and beans, as well as seafood, meat, and poultry dishes. These are often served with coconut rice, fried plantains and/or a hearty soup like sancocho. The area is known for regional dishes such as arroz de coco (coconut rice) and bollo de verde (green plantain dough), and fresh fruit is both plentiful and delicious.

Vegetarians, vegans and other dietary requirements and allergies can be accommodated - please just request this on your passenger info form.

What is the accommodation like?

Casa Remedios La Bella, Cienaga, Colombia, Hotel
Santa Marta and Cienaga

When staying in the towns of Santa Marta and Cienaga you'll stay in charismatic boutique hotels, locally owned and well-situated for exploring the surrounding neighborhoods. The usual accommodation choices will be Casa Carolina in Santa Marta, and Casa Remedios La Bella in Cienaga.

Finca Santa Elena Cerro Kennedy Colombia Kagumu
Santa Elena Farm

You'll spend one night in the rural mountainous setting of 'Finca Santa Elena' in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is a welcoming and memorable experience. Sleeping facilities are basic, with 2 large shared rooms (a female dorm, and a male dorm) and shared bathroom facilities.

Eco Lodge, Taironaka, Colombia, Hotel
Rural Accommodation in Minca and on the Coast

When staying in the rural, forested locations, your accommodation will be in eco-lodges – chosen for their sustainability credentials and enabling you to get off the beaten path and closer to nature. Just outside the small town of Minca, you'll spend one night in a rustic eco-lodge, known for its fantastic views. There is no air-conditioning in the basic lodgings, and toilet facilities are shared. At the end of the trip, your last two nights will be spent in a jungle setting at the Taironaka Eco Hotel, next to a river and just 1 mile from the coastline. There are also shared toilet facilities at this accommodation.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge (excluding the one night at Santa Elena Farm), see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).

I really can’t fault anything about this trip. It was my first time traveling solo and it was such a great experience that I will remember forever. Everything was organised brilliantly and Sol our guide was absolutely awesome, super friendly, helpful, patient and great fun.

This was such an amazing adventure I can't recommend it highly enough. The variety of activities was exactly what I wanted, and I particularly enjoyed the paddle boarding and kayaking.

Our guide Sol was exceptional, so knowledgeable and passionate about her country it was a real privilege to learn about Colombia from her.

Much Better Adventures made everything so easy, we were well prepared for every activity. I think my favourite part of the trip was getting to experience parts of Colombia and activities that we would just never have found on our own, such as the farm stay in the mountains which was truly the highlight of the week. The family were so lovely and accomodating and it was so fascinating to experience their way of life which is so different to our own.

Overall the major downside of this trip is that's it's going to be pretty difficult to top for future adventures!

The trip was great. I

The trip was great. I selected it for the specific variety of activities. The sequencing with hiking followingbthe mountain biking was perfect. It likely would have been even more difficult to ride the challenging terrain after the long Cerro Kennedy hikes. Sol, our guide, was fantastic- very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Colombia and the changes the country has gone through culturally, politically, environmentally, etc. She's super personable and attentive to all details. The day guides for sailing, the cacoa plantation and the floating village/kayak were also exceptional. Food was plentiful and good everywhere. While I expect eco lodges to be basic (I've stayed at ones before), this was a bit lacking. The shared room had only a small bench for 2 people to squeeze two small duffel bags on with nowhere to spread out the contents which was particularly difficult for re-packing for the return trip home. Also, the open air restaurant was very hot with no fans and the tables were never wiped clean - all had pollen or something on them. It would also be nice if the path between the outdoor shower and our building had pavers vs. being dirt/mud. The setting however was very unique and I loved that we had to take a boat to get there. The first and last full days were likely my favorite but I loved it all. It was also nice that the auto transit times were not long. The tuk tuks to the kayak spot were a nice touch.

An excellent way to see

An excellent way to see some of the diversity of Colombia due in no small part to a great itinerary. All the activities were very well organised.

Patrick S.(April 2026)
Unforgettable experience

So many great things to mention, but the highlights were staying at the farm at Cerro Kennedy, having excellent Colombian food and coffee, and kayaking through the jungle to the sea. Sol was an amazing guide - very knowledgeable and so friendly. My 3rd adventure trip and definitely my favourite.

Advice for potential travellers:

  • Inexperienced mountain-bikers and hikers could find those activities a bit difficult. They are more suitable for those with some experience due to the temperature and the steepness.
  • Bring some small board games / card games for the evenings.
  • Bring plenty of sun screen and a hat. It’s a hot country and there’s a lot of time in the sun.
  • I loved the more austere elements of the trip (farm house and eco lodge) but if you want hot showers, fast WiFi and air con throughout your trip, this isn’t for you.
Salil B.(February 2026)
Fun in the sun

The trip on the whole was great. Rosa is a fantastic tour leader; listens to concerns and accommodates as needed. Unfortunately the sailing got canceled secondary to weather concerns.

I do have some criticisms; the hiking to Cerro Kennedy was difficult; but then we were scheduled to hike down 1500 meters the same day; which is excessive for a level 2 trip.

The accommodations on the whole were good but the Eco lodge has some deficiencies. Toilets don’t flush ; electricity is rationed somewhat strictly.

This was an epic week. Fun activities in beautiful settings, whilst also learning about local history and lives of the indigenous communities.

Will recommend this to friends. The activities were easier than expected, with the exception of one of the hikes. But this meant you could really enjoy the beauty of your surroundings.

Rosa, our guide, was a brilliant ambassador for Santa Marta and Colombia. She was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and ensured we all knew what to expect from each day.

What a TRIPPPPPP

This trip offers an incredible blend of adventure, beauty, and cultural insight. From sailing and supporting eco-friendly companies that clean up beaches to exploring a floating town and and various local initiatives, there's so much to discover. Paddleboarding through serene mangroves, kayaking along picturesque waterways, trekking through lush rainforests starting from a coffee plantation, and mountain biking to a cacao plantation all create an unforgettable experience. It's a unique combination of adrenaline activities and fascinating learning about the area's natural and cultural heritage. This is a must-do adventure for anyone looking to immerse themselves in something truly special!

It was a great week filled with activities that ranged from hard (mountain biking uphill for me) to relaxed (gliding downstreamin the kayak). What I loved about doing this organised tour was that we got to visit towns and areas we wouldn't have chosen on our own, as they are less developed and not always easy to navigate if you dont know the language or the region. Seeing things like the floating village with insight into the everyday life of the locals was enlightening.

Only thing is that in the true eco style of the organisation, some hotels were more hostels or had no aircon / hot water, and this came as a surprise. Lots of mosquitos and midges so we were all eaten alive by the end of the week, but it was worth it.

We had a small group of 5 people + Sol our guide, which was lovely as way more interactive and fun! Sol was a great guide, anticipated our requests and needs early on and surprised us with amazing organisation for things she knew we would like, what a gem! Definitely recommend this trip!

Wonderful experience!

We had a brilliant time exploring the Caribbean coast of Colombia with our local guides and our group leader Sol. It was great to see the diversity and undertake various activities - jewel of the trip was our homestay at Villa San Carlos.

This was a fun, enjoyable trip and the guide Sol was excellent. Some of the accommodation is pretty basic, (e.g. communal showers). The trip to Ciudad Antigua was replaced for security reasons with a hike up Cerro Kennedy mountain including overnight stay in a remote farmhouse. This was notified ahead of time but for me it was the highlight of the trip, with spectacular views. The bikes provided for the cycling day were substandard quality and not at all suitable for the very steep terrain of this route (not at all like the flat pictured on the website!) Take lots of strong bug spray!

Reply from Much Better Adventures  (04 July 2024)

Hi Christopher, Thanks for your review, we're glad you found the trip fun. We appreciate you highlighting the unexpected difficulty of the trip and wanted to let you know that after collecting feedback from customers and our host's team in Colombia, a detailed review of the trip's activities resulted in the difficulty grading being re-classified from 'Easy' to 'Moderate'. Since the trip was initially curated there have been several itinerary changes that have contributed to this amendment being necessary, particularly the permanent inclusion of the Cerro Kennedy trek on Day 5. We hope this change will help all future adventurers to enjoy the experience as much as possible.

Had a great trip with a variety of activities, and Sol was a fantastic guide! The highlight was seeing families of howling monkeys while kayaking on Don Diego river.

Be prepared that some locations are a little remote meaning the accommodation is very basic, although worth it for the scenery, sunsets and experiences.

Another great MBA trip in an absolutely stunning country. This trip offers so much variety with regards to activities as well as opportunities to learn about the culture and people. Some activities are more strenuous than others. The local guide (Sol) was exceptional. Note some parts of the trip are pretty remote and away from 4G!

This trip was well worth it. Prepare for sea, jungle, mountains, rivers and everything inbetween. Our guide Sol was excellent and some of the views were epic. Our itinerary was changed slightly but we were informed in advance of all changes, and managed well. Special shout out to Sol for sorting out a birthday cake in the middle of the jungle.

FAQs

The bikes used for the biking activity are manufactured by the brands Scott and Trek. These front suspension mountain bikes are set up with gearing and tires which are ideal for the terrain. There are a range of frame sizes to accommodate different heights.

Helmets are included (and it's obligatory to use them), and a safety briefing takes place before you bike. We cannot guarantee that the quality of the locally provided helmets will be of the same standards as those required in the US – you may, therefore, wish to bring your own.

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service.

You'll have access to safe drinking water at each accommodation, and your host will also carry water giving you plenty of opportunity to refill water bottles and stay hydrated throughout the day. Tap water in rural locations should be purified or boiled before drinking – your guide will be able to provide location-specific advice. You may wish to read our guide to water filters here.

No, as you won't be returning to a hotel in Santa Marta (unless you have reserved an extra post-trip night) it isn't possible to leave any excess luggage anywhere.

The sailing trip is weather dependent, so conditions outside of the host's control (namely, rough seas) might require cancelation on health and safety grounds. In such a case, the host would endeavor to either replace the activity with something appropriate or rearrange the running order of the itinerary.

There are also occasional National Park closures that can be announced at short notice by the park authorities in Colombia. This sometimes happens with Tayrona National Park. Your host will endeavor to share info right away whenever a change is announced that will impact part(s) of the published itinerary.

Santa Marta and the Sierra Nevada region has a tropical rainforest climate, characterized by warm temperatures year-round and occasional heavy rainfall, with little variation throughout the year. There is high humidity, and temperatures typically range from the mid-70s to low-90s°F.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 164kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
