This renowned primate rehabilitation centre is home to a thriving population of endangered orangutans. While these semi-wild primates roam freely across a vast protected forest, sightings aren’t guaranteed – but they often emerge from the canopy during daily supplemental feedings, offering a chance to observe them up close in their natural habitat. After your visit, set off on a scenic drive to the foothills of Mount Singai, where you’ll enjoy an early lunch at one of the welcoming community homestays. In the afternoon, hop on a bike and cycle through a short, picturesque route around the serene Serapi Retreat, your tranquil accommodation for the night. After dinner, if you’re feeling adventurous, join your guide for a nocturnal rainforest exploration. Experience the enchanting darkness of the jungle as you track unique frog species and immerse yourself in the captivating sounds of the rainforest at night.

Visit the park's turtle hatchery and learn about the local turtle conservation program, before hiking through pristine forest to reach Antu Laut beach where you can enjoy a refreshing swim and admire the huge boulders that dot the coast. Grab lunch in a fishing village, then transfer by road (3 hours) to a secluded eco-lodge nestled in the lush foliage of the Damai Peninsula, dominated by the rainforest-clad slopes of Mount Santubong. This afternoon, head out for a final wildlife adventure on a scenic cruise along the Santubong and Salak Rivers, one of the best places in Sarawak to spot rare Irrawaddy dolphins. These unique creatures, with their rounded heads and expressive faces, are often seen, though sightings depend on the tides. As evening sets in, explore smaller tributaries to see flashing fireflies in the mangroves and spot Estuarine Crocodiles lurking in the dark. Keep an eye out for other wildlife, including monitor lizards, otters, mudskippers, and kingfishers. Round off the day with a farewell dinner in the fishing village of Buntal before returning to your forest retreat for a final night serenaded by the jungle.

Food and Dietary info

The Malaysian part of Borneo is an ethnic melting pot of Chinese, Malaysian, and indigenous peoples who have coexisted on the island for centuries. The result is a spectacular variety of spices and flavors that influence the local cuisine. Borneo staples include grilled fish, barbecued shrimp, fried rice, noodles, and local vegetables seasoned with garlic, ginger, and rich sauces. The rainforest provides many of the locals' favorite treats, including durian (a tropical fruit with a pungent smell) and the rambutan (a juicy, sweet fruit similar to a lychee). Fish- and chicken-based soups with noodles cooked in a hot clay pot are very traditional.

If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances, or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’ for specific advice relating to this trip. Trip level explained

Level 2

Easy-Moderate

This trip is designed for those with a true spirit of adventure. You’ll need to be prepared for a few hours of activity each day, with a mix of hiking, biking, kayaking, and wildlife tracking. While the distances and elevations may not appear particularly challenging on paper, the tropical heat and very high humidity can significantly increase the intensity of these activities. Some jungle trails may be overgrown, with muddy or wet conditions underfoot in places, adding an extra layer of challenge. The humidity, combined with the heat, can make even moderate activities feel more demanding, so staying hydrated is essential. However, there will be regular breaks to rest, enjoy the surrounding views, spot wildlife, and soak in the beauty of the rainforest.

Accommodation on this trip reflects the remoteness of the locations visited and adds to the adventure. In some areas, you may stay in basic facilities such as dorm-style rooms, homestays and simple huts. These places, though rustic, bring you closer to the heart of the jungle and the natural environment, enriching your experience.

Expect a few early starts and one exciting nocturnal hike, designed to maximize your chances of spotting unique wildlife. For kayaking, you should feel comfortable paddling for up to three hours at a time. While no prior experience is necessary, a bit of upper body strength will help you enjoy it more. The two biking days are suitable for all levels, even beginners, with routes that include gentle forest trails and paved roads, with only a few manageable hills to climb.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings (soft duffel bag or backpack recommended, hard cases not advisable) which will be transported for you throughout the itinerary. For the overnight stay in Tanjung Datu on Day 7, it is advisable to carry only a small overnight backpack with rain cover. During the activities, all you need is a day backpack with rain cover (30+ liters, which you will carry on the hikes). Please see the gear list for more detailed info.

Hot climate: factors to consider

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Highly Remote Environments: Factors to Consider

This trip travels through very remote areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited and evacuation may take a significant amount of time. In some locations, medical facilities may provide only basic treatment, and further travel may be required to reach a hospital capable of providing more advanced care.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, evacuation may involve multiple stages and different forms of transportation before reaching appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may be unreliable for significant portions of this trip and communication may rely on satellite devices carried by your guides.

Your guides are trained and experienced in operating in remote environments and will manage the group carefully throughout the journey. However, due to the remoteness of these locations, access to external support may be limited and delays to medical care should be expected.

Before booking, consider your personal health and comfort traveling in locations where medical care and evacuation options may be limited or delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we strongly recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling. If you have a medical condition that may require rapid access to specialist care, regular monitoring, or emergency treatment, this type of remote travel may not be suitable without careful planning and medical advice.

Your travel insurance must cover the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation.

This holidays was just breathtaking. The island is truly beautiful, not just the spectacular nature and wild life but also the people we meet through this journey. Our guide Kelvin was amazing. the whole organization was seamless. I have never bene fed that well on a trip and all of it was so delicious. Also the chosen activities were amazing and really nicley balanced. I also enjoyed the time distribution between planned activities, transport time and leisure time. We saw a lot but still it never felt like we were in a rush.

  • Ashley C.

Our tour guide Kelvin was exceptional. Every day was a new experience. My favourite day was jungle hiking up to a waterfall via bamboo bridges, then staying overnight on a stilt house overlooking a lake. Views and food were sublime. Kayaking down the Sarawak river was a close second. Yes the accommodation was basic however always provided sheets and pillows, but the locations were always to experience something new. If you are prepared to give everything a go, have a reasonable level of fitness and good knees, then this is a fabulous trip. It is worth arriving a day early to experience more of Kuching. Try to make the first cycle ride as it was worth it. This is billed as an adventure tour but Kelvin ensured we also had culinary delights throughout so it was a bit of a food tour too! Nature is unpredictable but we saw plenty of wildlife in natural settings. The last location was teeming with wildlife - an otter ran across the beach on the last morning!

I really enjoyed this trip but it wasn’t my favourite by MBA. I liked the packed itinerary; we had the best guide (Estee ❤️) and a wildlife tracking guide Mel; I absolutely loved the homestay on a reservoir and staying by the beach at the turtle conservation centre. The food was generally great, especially at the homestay. I appreciated very much water being provided. I loved a walk through the food market and some sampling. While I loved simple accommodation at homestay and by the beach, I didn’t like the “retreat” hotel or the last “resort” with damp rooms. My expectation was for a nice place at the end so perhaps you need to state clearly that the accommodation will be very basic throughout. The final reason for the 4 stars rather than 5 is that I felt that the MBA mark-up on the local services, accommodation and food felt considerable. It is an expensive trip. If you are travelling from the UK, I would recommend an extra night or two in KL or Singapore to acclimatise.

We had an amazing time! Our main guides, Estee and Laura, were with us throughout and made sure everything ran smoothly and then local guides joined us for hikes etc to impart their specialist knowledge. Each day was packed with different activities, some more strenuous than others - there was a good balance. …. and then we were in Borneo which is simply beautiful - jungle, beach, caves, the sea, the sky, the wildlife, the people. We stayed in some amazing locations and the sheer variety of experiences will stay with me forever. Love Borneo 💚🇲🇾

The whole trip was fab, from our guide helping pick up local ingredients in markets and taking us to delicious local food joints, to the nature and wildlife which was incredible. Highlights were perhaps some of the unexpected experiences, from bats in caves, frogs and moths to orangutans and crocodiles. The camps were all magical experiences but where else in the world can you boat to your accommodation, sleep outside (with shelter) hatch and release turtles and swim in paradise. Brilliant from start to finish! Very active, very sweaty but truly epic!

We knew what we signed up for, a challenging adventure in Borneo. Yes, the humidity was intense, the tropics are hot, even the sea is Luke warm but the team from MBA had us covered. From advice on menu selection to the challenge of traversing tough terrain in the tropics. Always there with the right gear/support at the right time, from the first meet at hotel lobby to being dropped off at the departure terminal. If you are adamant about an alcoholic beverage, remember that some of the accommodation is based on religious practices and you might not be catered for, though pretty sure your guide will be able to find a solution with sufficient warning.

  • Wow!

    Jackie July 2025
Such an amazing trip - diverse in environment, activity and intensity! The humidity made short hikes challenging, as did the rainforests’ vines that were equal part assistance and obstacle at times. Lister, the guide, was outstanding. His planning and logistical eye for detail paid off, and he is such a lively fella with a great sense of humour. He was always listening to our chats and he made tweaks to the arrangements to ensure that everything went smoothly - he is an absolute gem! This trip gave more than I expected - with the stand out highlight being the turtle hatchery, where we not only witnessed babies hatching and being released back into the ocean, but also spent several hours watching a turtle nesting on the beach at night… a truly amazing experience!
  • Once in a lifetime trip

    Alice July 2025
Really some once in a lifetime experiences on this trip. We were very lucky to see lots of incredible wildlife, including orangutans, turtles, Irrawaddy dolphins, crocodiles and proboscis monkeys (among others). Our guide, Lister, was so thoughtful and fun and made the whole trip very easy for us. He made sure everything went very smoothly and couldn't have done a better job. The local guides for the activities were also brilliant and very knowledgeable. It was a great trip and organised very efficiently, and we did some things I would have struggled to organise alone I think. I would definitely recommend and only wish I'd stayed longer!
  • Amazing Holiday

    Leah K. July 2025
This was a fabulous trip. Borneo is an amazing place with beautiful people. We really enjoyed the diversity of the activities, the scenery and the wildlife. In terms of advice to others, we probably came a bit over-prepared with long pants for the jungle, we really only needed one pair. The mossies were fine with insent repellant and we didn't see a single leech! The trip was extremely well organised. Our guide, Lister, always made sure we were thoroughly briefed and knew what we were doing, he was attentive to our needs and altered things along the way without needing to be asked to give us an even better experience. We will definitely be recommending Much Better Adventures and Borneo to all our kiwi friends!
  • A Journey into Authentic Borneo Wilderness

    Ashleigh R. July 2025
I recently had an incredible holiday on “The Ultimate Adventure Through Wild Borneo”, and I can honestly say it exceeded every expectation. From start to finish, the experience was nothing short of extraordinary - perfect for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife and off-the-beaten-path exploration. The itinerary is thoughtfully crafted to showcase Borneos rich biodiversity and was physically engaging. The guide we had was outstanding. He was knowledgeable, passionate, and invested in making our experience the most enjoyable and comfortable possible. Additionally accommodations were a delightful mix of rustic and comfortable, always immersed in nature and totally unique. If you’re looking for a holiday that is just as enriching as it is exhilarating, this tour is unmissable!

Overall I thought this trip was great. Our guide Farhah , was amazing from the moment she greeted me at the airport to the moment we were saying emotional goodbyes. She was so patient and encouraging with the group. The other guides, assistants and hosts were also amazing (shout out to Alex). The itinerary was thoughtful and varied, with a bunch of different activities, amazing scenery, wildlife and some good food and culture. I think it was a good level of intensity but pretty tough at times with a packed itinerary and with the heat and humidity adding to the challenge. Some in the group found it too tough at times, but everyone tried so hard and I was proud of what some others achieved.
  • An excellent window to Borneo's

    Priya B. October 2024
An excellent window to Borneo's flora & fauna. Thoroughly enjoyed the variety of activities offered in this trip. Faraha and her team worked really hard to make this itinerary run smoothly. The group gelled very well and enjoyed most of the activities together. However there needs to be some change in the itinerary to give a pause to constant packing, unpacking and laundry ! Majority of accommodations were vary basic. The trip notes don't give clarity about how basic these places and toilet facilities are. We (wrongly!)expected slightly more variety in the vegetarian food available at various places, given Malaysia's tropical location.

Oh wow! Hot, humid and hectic but at the same time exciting, adventurous and pushing personal boundaries and confidence. Saw great wildlife, scenery and culture all within the security of a great group of people with an amazing guide. Thank you.
  • A once in a lifetime kind of trip!

    Emily M. September 2024
What a trip! This is a truly authentic taste of the wild side of Borneo and something not to be missed! The trip gives you absolutely everything from hiking and biking, to swimming and rafting! Delilah our host was absolutely amazing and made us feel so welcomed and well looked after. The treks are definitely hot and sweaty but not too far in distance and totally worth it in the end with all the amazing wildlife and scenery. The local guides were so knowledgeable and passionate about their amazing work and our whole group really felt like we’d been part of something special. Every meal was absolutely delicious and really authentic in terms of traditional Malaysian food. The Home Stays and the National Park nights are definitely off the beaten track and it felt like you had come off the tourist trail to experience something truly unique. We were so lucky to see Orangutangs and baby Turtles being released into the wild which for me was a once in a lifetime experience! I’d fully recommend to anyone wanting to experience something totally different who is up for a bit of a wild adventure!

Amazing trip around Sarawak. Varied anct and accommodation over the trip makes for a whole variety of experiences. The animals are the highlight with the monkeys, bearded pigs, orangutans and particularly the turtles being the highlight.

    Kathy B. July 2024
This was an excellently organised trip - Kelvin worked so hard to ensure everything went smoothly from our activities to our meals. He ensured everyone was happy and comfortable with everything and made the trip with his cheeky sense of humour and big smiles. The trip was tiring at times due to the activities but this made it all the more enjoyable because you found you really made the most of each day and were ready to fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle each night.

  • Brilliant Borneo break!!

    Debra S. April 2024
Blown away by my Borneo adventure - I have warned my friends that will be a Borneo bore for weeks after this!! I had high hopes for this Much Better Adventure, yet it exceeded all my expectations. The schedule was strenuous in the heat & humidity of jungle Borneo, but our tour coordinator Kelvin made sure we were all coping and hydrated and able to take rest breaks if needed. Kelvin was fantastic at every turn: organised, proactive, flexible, amiable and inexhaustibly cheerful! All equipment for the adventures (bikes/helmets/kayaks/lifejackets) was of a high standard and safety gear (helmets/life jackets) were insisted upon, which is great. The expert guides for jungle treks and kayaking were consistently incredibly knowledgable, I learnt so much from them! Homestay hosts were fantastic and great cooks too - delicious & delectable fresh picked local produce served up in banana leaves in the jungle was unexpected and appreciated by all of us on the trip. Staying in the longhouse, we were treated to a performance of traditional music and dance, and invited to participate - what a hoot, loved it! Rafting was not on our scheduled itinerary, but the opportunity to loan our hostess’ bamboo raft and jaunt around the lake in the evening sun after a long hike was such a joy! We saw a huge range of rare species of animals & plants in their natural habitats - this the reason I went to Borneo. Orangutans, silver leaf monkeys, proboscis monkeys, Bornean bearer pigs, Sarawak black monkeys, Paradise tree snake, green viper, tarantulas, carnivorous plants. All amazing, totally thrilling! A huge Thank You to MBA and all its agents who made this such a memorable adventure.

I literally can’t find a single fault with this epic adventure. Kelvin was the best host we could possibly imagine the whole trip ran so smoothly it was like he was one of us. All the tour guides were top quality. The itinerary was so professionally put together. The places we slept at were all so different we felt like we had a proper experience of what Borneo has to offer. All the food was absolutely top notch and some fantastic surprises. I have a big appetite and never once went hungry. Honestly it was the best trip ever and so much better than I ever anticipated. Thank you so much to JC, Kelvin and the whole team!

    Nisha March 2024
Such an amazing experience! I never thought I’d survive sleeping in a rainforest since I’m terrified of bugs but it’s 100% doable. This trip was definitely off the beaten path, in most places, we were the only ones staying in that location. It was nice to be away from technology and people, we had our own little bubble away from reality. The scenery and wildlife is so beautiful, falling asleep to the sounds of the rainforest is quite an experience. It certainly felt like a bucket list

A great introduction to the hiking trails of Sarawak's national parks. Experiencing the jungle during the night walks was a highlight of our trip, the amount of wildlife that appears after dark is astonishing. Nothing compares to watching the sunset on an empty beach, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest. Our thanks go to Farhah and her team of guides, who made our trip so memorable.

If you wish to extend your trip and climb the famous Kinabalu summit, the easiest way is to fly from Kuching to Kota Kinabalu (1.5 hr direct flights with AirAsia or other airlines). Permits need to be obtained far in advance and you can reserve via local agencies.

The tap water in Borneo may not always agree with the stomach for those who haven't been in Malaysia for a while. You might find purified water in some of the accommodation which you can use to fill up each morning, so be sure to pack a reusable water bottle or two. To avoid plastic waste where filtered water is not available, we suggest bringing water purification tablets or a different purification system for extra safety. Please find more info here.

The Semenggoh Wildlife Center, set in a nature reserve in Sarawak, is one of the best places in Borneo to view semi-wild orangutans. The orangutans have been rescued from captivity and trained to survive in the surrounding forest reserve. The park has been around since 1975, and was established with three aims: to rescue, care for and rehabilitate endangered wildlife back into the wild, to conduct research on endangered species and captive breeding programs, and finally to educate the general public on wildlife conservation. A variety of animals are under its care, but it is the orangutan rehabilitation program which has been the most recognized and the most successful. Newly rehabilitated orangutans are then released into Kubah National Park.

By visiting Semenggoh and other genuine rehabilitation centers in Borneo, you are supporting projects that are working tirelessly to help save the orangutans and their habitats. This is an example of how responsible tourism can have a real, tangible benefit and how you as a traveler can help save some of the wildlife you have traveled around the world to see. You'll be asked to follow a specific code of conduct to ensure your visit is responsible (such as by keeping a safe distance from the orangutans and keeping noise levels to a minimum), and please bear in mind that sightings are never 100% guaranteed, as the animals are free to roam in the large protected forest area where they live.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Borneo's cuisine is shaped by its dense rainforest interior, long river systems and coastal geography, drawing on Indigenous traditions of the Dayak and other ethnic groups alongside Malay, Chinese and colonial influences that reflect the island's complex cultural history. Meals tend to be simple and ingredient-led, featuring rice, freshwater fish, wild vegetables, jungle ferns and pork in non-Muslim communities, with coconut, chilli and fermented condiments used widely across the island. Dietary diversity varies considerably depending on whether travellers are in coastal towns, interior longhouse communities or the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, and vegetarians may find options more limited outside urban areas. Travellers with specific dietary requirements should plan ahead, particularly for more remote stretches, and guides will be essential in communicating needs and ensuring suitable meals are arranged with local hosts and communities.

SPECIAL DIETS Vegetarian -Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance. While every effort will be made to accommodate your requirements, please note that vegetarian ingredients and specialty meat-free alternatives are not widely available in this destination. As a result, meal options may be somewhat limited and repetitive. Typical vegetarian meals in Malaysia may include dishes such as stir-fried seasonal vegetables, tofu-based dishes, egg dishes, lentil or dhal curry, and rice or rice noodle meals. Local favourites like vegetable fried rice, mee goreng (vegetarian version), and vegetable curry (often prepared with coconut milk) can usually be arranged. Fresh fruit and simple soups are also commonly available. We recommend being flexible with local preparation styles, and bringing any preferred snacks or protein supplements if you require more variety during your trip.

Vegan -Vegan diets can be accommodated on this trip, although they may be more challenging to cater for. While your host will do their best to meet your requirements, please note that vegan-specific ingredients and plant-based alternatives are not widely available in this destination. Due to the remote nature of the itinerary and limited local supply, meal options may be somewhat repetitive. Typical vegan-friendly meals in Malaysia can include simple rice-based dishes, stir-fried seasonal vegetables, tofu, tempeh, vegetable soups, and rice or rice noodle dishes. Many local dishes can be adapted to be vegan by excluding meat, fish sauce, egg, and dairy, for example vegetable fried rice, stir-fried noodles, or vegetable curries prepared with coconut milk. However, we cannot guarantee full variety or specialised vegan substitutes throughout the trip. We strongly recommend bringing your preferred snacks, protein supplements, or meal replacements from home to ensure you have sufficient nutrition and variety during your adventure. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Kosher -Fully certified kosher kitchens and supervision are rarely available on this trip and cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Where possible, we will do our best to assist, but full kosher preparation standards (including certified supervision, utensils, and separate preparation areas) may not be available in most locations. Vegetarian or vegan meals are often the most reliable alternative, if suitable for you.

Halal -Halal meals can be arranged throughout the trip, provided your host is informed in advance. Please note that halal-certified restaurants or cafés are not widely available in all locations on this itinerary. In many areas, meals will instead be provided from pork-free establishments or local eateries that may use Muslim-friendly ingredients, but do not hold official halal certification. Typical meal options may include grilled or stir-fried chicken or beef from pork-free kitchens, rice-based dishes such as nasi goreng (fried rice) or nasi lemak (without non-halal components), noodle dishes, vegetable curries, soups, and seafood where appropriate. Ingredients such as alcohol-based sauces or non-halal meat products can be excluded upon request, where possible. As certification standards vary by destination and supply is limited in some areas, we are unable to guarantee fully certified halal meals throughout the trip. Where preferred, vegetarian or vegan options are often more consistently available and may provide a more reliable alternative.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free -Gluten-free diets can be difficult to accommodate on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please note that gluten-free ingredients are not widely available in this destination. As a result, meal options particularly main courses may be limited and somewhat repetitive, often centred around staples such as steamed rice, rice noodles (bihun), and fresh vegetables. Where possible, naturally gluten-free dishes can be provided, such as grilled or stir-fried meats, fish, eggs, vegetable soups, and simple rice-based meals. However, common ingredients like soy sauce, marinades, and gravies may contain wheat unless specifically substituted. We provide gluten-free soy sauce (Kikkoman brand) for use during meals where applicable. Despite this, we cannot guarantee a completely gluten-free environment due to the risk of cross-contamination in local kitchens and shared cooking spaces. We strongly recommend bringing your preferred gluten-free snacks, protein bars, or supplements from home to ensure you have sufficient suitable options throughout your journey

Lactose Free -Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance. In Malaysia, many local dishes are naturally lactose-free. Typical meals include steamed rice with grilled or stir-fried chicken, beef or fish, vegetable dishes, clear soups, and rice noodle-based options. Popular local dishes such as nasi goreng (fried rice), mee goreng (fried noodles), and bihun (rice vermicelli) can usually be prepared without dairy ingredients. Coconut milk is commonly used in Malaysian cooking as a substitute for dairy in certain dishes such as curries, and is generally suitable for lactose-free diets. However, creamy or western-style sauces, desserts, and baked goods may contain milk, butter, or cream unless specifically adjusted. While we will do our best to avoid dairy in meal preparation, availability of specialised lactose-free products (such as lactose-free milk, butter, or cream alternatives) may be limited depending on location.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Borneo is located within the tropics, so you should expect high humidity and the possibility of rain at any time of the year. The best time to visit is during the dry season from March to October. During these months, the climate is typically tropical, with temperatures ranging from a cool 71°F in the evenings to a sultry 93°F in the daytime. Relative humidity is consistently high and typically around 70-90%.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 540kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
