Day 1
Welcome to Bali!
HotelTwin shareShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Your host will meet you on arrival at Denpasar Airport in Bali and transfer you to your hotel in Ubud, surrounded by iconic Indonesian landscapes in the lush forested uplands of Bali. Settle into your base for the next 3 nights and take a stroll around Ubud to get your bearings and soak up the relaxed atmosphere here. Meet up with your fellow adventurers for dinner and to chat about the adventure ahead.
Day 2
Hike Mount Catur (6,873 ft)
Driving3.5hrsHiking4-5hrs · 4mi · 2461ft up · 2625ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
You'll have a fairly early start on your first day of adventuring, heading off to the Bedugul area where the trek to Mount Catur begins. Mount Catur, also known as Puncak Mangu, is home to Pura Puncak Mangu, a sacred temple near the summit dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This site holds great spiritual significance for the Balinese people and is often visited for religious ceremonies. The trek takes you through lush tropical forests, with sweeping views of nearby lakes Bratan, Buyan and Tamblingan. On a clear day you can see all the way to the northern coastline of Bali. The trail is a great warm up for the bigger challenges to come, with some steep and occasionally slippery sections to be navigated. As you ascend, you’ll encounter a rich ecosystem teeming with biodiversity, including birds, monkeys, and tropical plant life in this protected forest. After reaching the summit and enjoying the views, you will descend via an alternate trail. Following your descent, return to Ubud, Bali’s artistic and cultural hub, where you can unwind and enjoy some well-earned rest at your base.
Day 3
Explore Tampaksiring
Hiking3hrs · 3mi · 246ft up · 246ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Today is a lighter day, after your first summit effort yesterday and with a big one coming up tomorrow. Discover the Tampaksiring area with short walks, meandering from local markets to herbal plant gardens and rice terraces. Visit the 11th-century Gunung Kawi temple where you'll be treated to Indonesian coffee, local herbal drinks and traditional Balinese cake. Hike on through rice fields to another ancient temple, Bukit Gundul, before having lunch. Get back to the hotel in the mid-afternoon and relax before grabbing an early dinner and bedding down in good time as you'll be waking up extremely early tomorrow.
Day 4
Sunrise ascent of Mount Agung (9,449 ft)
Hiking6-7hrs · 6mi · 3937ft up · 3937ft downDriving3hrsHotelTwin shareBreakfast includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
So, extremely early means around 1:00 AM – but it will be more than worth it to watch the sunrise from the roof of Bali. You'll be dropped off on the flanks of the still-active Mount Agung volcano at the Pasar Agung temple (4,888 ft), one of the oldest, holiest and largest temples on the island. This tough trail passes through the forest at first, changing to sparse shrubs and rocky terrain as you gain elevation. You'll push on to the summit through a lunar-like landscape requiring careful footing to navigate the rugged volcanic rocks and a final steep ascent over loose volcanic scree. At the top you'll have breakfast and watch the sunrise over the endless panorama, looking down on the islands near Nusa Lembongan. The sacred second summit at 9,449 ft is believed by Balinese people to be home to the gods, including Lord Shiva. Descend back down the volcano and hop in the van for a ride to the northeastern village of Candidasa, where you can relax and recharge in this tranquil coastal retreat—a perfect reward after your challenging summit exploits.
(Mount Agung is periodically closed (with little forewarning) to hikers for religious ceremonies, in which case you'll climb an alternative peak or volcano).
Day 5
Speedboat to Lombok Island
Driving2hrsHiking1hr · 1mi · 410ft up · 410ft downGuesthouseTwin shareBreakfast includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Time to check off another Indonesian island as you hop on a speedboat for a beautiful two-hour journey to Lombok. Upon reaching Lombok, head to Senaru for a hike to the Sendang Gile Waterfall, which cascades through lush forest. Settle into your lodge in Senaru village and enjoy a relaxed evening fueling up on Indonesian food ahead of the big adventure on Mount Rinjani, starting tomorrow.
Day 6
Set off for Rinjani
Hiking8hrs · 4mi · 4885ft upCampsiteTwin tentAll meals includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
Time to start the big one. Check in at the Rinjani National Park office, grab breakfast and meet up with your specialist guide and crew for your three days on Mount Rinjani. The trek starts from Sembalun village with a gentle ascent walking through open grassland. Tuck into lunch at 4,921 ft above sea level, with a good 2,133 ft of elevation already under your belt. Tackle a steep trail through a pine forest in the afternoon before reaching Pelawangan Camp at 8,658 ft. Enjoy a spectacular sunset over the enormous crater rim while your crew prepare dinner. Settle in for your first night camping on an active volcano beneath the Milky Way.
Day 7
Summit Mount Rinjani (12,224 ft)
Hiking11h · 4mi · 4921ft up · 1640ft downCampsiteTwin tentAll meals includedShow Day 7 detailHide detail
Rise early again (around 2:00 AM) for a big sunrise summit attempt. Roll out of your tent in the dark with the stars twinkling above and set off on a three-hour climb to reach the pinnacle of Mount Rinjani at 12,224 ft. You'll be rewarded with that fuzzy summit feeling and amazing sunrise views while looking out all the way back to Bali (and the familiar silhouette of your old friend, Mount Agung). Take your time on the peak, soaking up the scene before descending back down the ridge to camp for a much-deserved breakfast. Pack down camp and start your gradual descent to Segara Anak Lake with its healing hot springs, where you can swim and soak your tired limbs following your volcanic exploits. Enjoy a lakeside lunch with views of the active volcano Mount Baru before it's time to start heading up again, with an ascent to the next campsite at Senaru crater rim in time for sunset.
Day 8
The big descent

You know the old saying: what goes up... must embark on a six-hour, 6,500 ft trek all the way back down the active volcano. Tuck into breakfast first at your camping spot before packing down and hitting the trail all the way to Senaru village. The route today completes an epic circular around the Mount Rinjani complex – something very few other trekkers do; most go up and down via the same route. Hop in the van at Senaru for a drive to the plush Living Asia Resort and Spa on the Lombok coast for some proper R&R (and perhaps a shower) after your wild camping escapades.
Day 9
Time to kick back

With the big hikes of the trip well and truly under your belt, you'll tone things down today with time to recuperate at your beachside hotel. Your base here is situated in a coconut grove facing the Bali Volcano, and nestled on the edge of one of the west Lombok’s longest, widest and most beautiful natural sandy beaches. Unwind, relax and head for beach walks, sea swims or find a hammock to chill in.

Speedboat back to Bali

Get ready for one last dinner together with your fellow adventurers and new-found friends as you toast the end of an epic adventure.

FAQs
What if things don't go as planned?
Your host is an Indonesia trekking expert and has planned alternative options for each part of this itinerary. If conditions or religious ceremonies affect the summit of Mount Catur, you'll instead head to Batukaru temple for a hike of a similar duration through jungles, local villages, and rainforest before arriving at the famous Jatiluwih rice paddies.
If conditions or religious ceremonies affect the Mount Agung summit, your host will instead take you to climb Mount Batur using an alternative trail to avoid the crowds and make the hike more challenging than the usual route.
Your host also has various contingencies should the route up Mount Rinjani be affected during the trip.
Weather conditions very rarely affect the speedboat crossing to Lombok. However, in the unlikely event that services are canceled due to weather, your host will arrange an alternative option – most likely a flight to Lombok. Please note that due to limited flight availability, this decision may need to be made several days in advance. Should this occur, there may be an additional cost to you – ideally no more than $100 – to cover the difference between the speedboat and flight fare. Your host will always do their best to ensure a smooth and timely journey.
What is the ratio of guides to trekkers?
You'll be accompanied by one dedicated bilingual leader for the duration of the trip. In addition, you'll be joined by qualified local trekking guides on each of the volcanoes. The need for additional guides is assessed by local legislation and safety; however, you will always have a minimum of one extra trekking guide per 4-5 people on all of the volcanoes.
What should I do about drinking water?
Your host will provide mineral water throughout your trip from large containers. Bring a reusable water bottle to keep yourself topped up. If you wish to filter your own water on this adventure (or any other MBA trip where the local water supply isn't safe to rely on), please read our guide to the best water filters for adventurers.
What should my travel insurance policy include?
Due to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides coverage to the maximum altitude visited on this trip (12,224 ft)
Can my dietary needs be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form ASAP with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Indonesian cuisine reflects the country's extraordinary diversity as an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, shaped by centuries of spice trade, Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic influences, and a tropical climate that yields rice, vegetables, coconut, and an abundance of fresh produce year-round. Meals vary considerably by region but are typically bold and aromatic, centering on rice accompanied by grilled meats, fish, tempeh, tofu, and rich spice-based sauces, with strong local traditions differing between islands such as Java, Bali, and Sumatra. Vegetarians can generally find workable options given the widespread use of plant-based proteins like tempeh and tofu, though fish-based condiments and meat stocks are common and may not always be obvious. Travelers with specific dietary requirements should expect variable awareness outside tourist areas, and guides can be a vital resource in communicating needs clearly to local cooks and hosts.
SPECIAL DIETS Vegetarian -Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Indonesia offers a wide variety of plant-based dishes using tofu, tempeh, vegetables, rice, and noodles. Please note that some dishes may contain fish sauce, shrimp paste, or meat stock, so advance notice is essential.
Vegan -Vegan diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive, as animal-based ingredients such as eggs, shrimp paste, fish sauce, and dairy are commonly used in local cooking and awareness of vegan requirements can vary outside tourist areas.
Please do consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Kosher -Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. The host is unable to guarantee a separate, certified cooking/preparation area or the use of certified kosher products. They can, however, provide meals that exclude non-Kosher ingredients (such as pork and shellfish) and avoid mixing meat and dairy.
Halal -Halal diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population, and Halal food is widely available in many parts of the country. However, availability may vary in Bali and some international tourism areas where non-Halal options are also common.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free -Gluten-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. Wheat-based noodles, soy sauce, fried foods, and cross-contamination are common in local kitchens, although rice-based meals are widely available.
Please do consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Lactose Free -Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as grilled meats, rice, and vegetable dishes though eggs are common.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team before booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.
This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
Peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, soy, and egg are commonly used in Indonesian cooking, often in sauces or as garnishes. Cross-contamination risk can be significant in local kitchens and street-food environments. Clear labeling cannot always be guaranteed.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips typically consist of a mix of solo travelers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.
It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.
Don't just take our word for it:
- 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
- 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
- 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends

What's the weather like?
Indonesia is positioned on both sides of the equator, so it has a similar climate year-round with average temperatures between 75°F and 95°F. Indonesia's dry season (from mid-April to November) is when the conditions are ripe for volcano trekking. From December to March, the rains come which make the volcanoes less than desirable and potentially unsafe to hike on, so no trips are run during these months.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 1003kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
