Itinerary
Day 1
Journey south to Llogara National Park
Driving3-3.5hrsHotelTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Welcome to Albania! Meet your host in Tirana (either at the airport or in the city) for the transfer south to the spectacular Llogara National Park. Your journey will take you via the salt pans of the Narta Lagoon and the historic city of Vlore. Nestled in the heart of the Ceraunian Mountains, Llogara National Park is an important biosphere reserve, famous for its ancient and beautifully-shaped black pines and firs trees which overlook the shimmering Albanian Riviera’s Ionian shore. Settle into your cozy mountain hotel, get to know your fellow adventurers and enjoy a meal while you hear all about the itinerary ahead.
Day 2
Hike the high coastal mountains
Hiking4hrs · 7mi · 1394ft up · 2051ft downHotelTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
After a hearty breakfast, a short transfer takes you to the trailhead which lies at the highest point of the Llogara Pass, opposite Cika and Qorre peaks. A wide gravel path steadily leads to the radio towers at the ridge, where you can marvel at the lush green slopes of the Karaburun Peninsula plunging steeply into the deep blue Ionian Sea below. Panoramic views of the rugged Albanian Riviera and the Bay of Vlore will accompany you throughout today's hike along the spine of the peninsula. A rocky path climbs up to Mount Gjipali (4,744 ft), where you can take a lofty picnic break and contemplate the harsh beauty of the entire coastline. Next, descend to a mountain pasture and enter the Deep Pass, a rainforest-like green corridor that offers generous shade for a well-deserved break. After the hike, transfer back to your mountain hotel where you can relax for the remainder of the day before dinner in the evening.
Day 3
Beach hop along the dazzling Ionian Coast
Hiking4hrs · 8mi · 820ft up · 1804ft downGuesthouseTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
This morning you'll swap the mountains for the sea as you descend to the coast by transfer, before setting off for your second spectacular hike. You'll cross cliffs and follow trails through Mediterranean macchia from one dazzling beach to another. It is by no means a flat walk, but it offers the perfect mix of hiking and swimming along the stunning beaches of the Albanian Riviera. Begin in the picturesque coastal village of Vuno, with its white houses and centuries-old Orthodox churches stacked up the hillside. Depending on trail conditions, your guide may recommend a slightly different route toward Gjipe, otherwise you'll continue with an idyllic descent through olive groves leading to the secluded Aquarium Beach, then follow the red-earth trail until Livadhi Bay accompanied by the sound of the crashing waves. End your day in the beautiful seaside town of Himare, which remains tranquil and has shepherds roaming the hills, ancient olive groves and abandoned castle ruins overlooking the bay. Here, you'll check in to a local guesthouse, which will be your base for the next three nights.
Day 4
Charming towns of the south
Hiking4.5hrs · 5mi · 1969ft up · 2215ft downDriving1.5hrsGuesthouseTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Today you'll explore a lesser-known part of the Albanian Riviera. After breakfast, you'll head south for 45 minutes to the stunning coastal mountains facing the mighty Ionian Sea. From Lukova, follow a steep shepherd’s path which takes you towards a ridge, with views of the terraced hills plunging into the turquoise sea. Soon, Corfu appears on the horizon and as you traverse the pass, you can admire the wild inland landscapes of this pristine corner of Albania. Hike amongst oaks and blooming wildflowers (in season), then descend a wide, exposed gravel trail which immerses you in the captivating coastal views all the way down to the village of Piqeras. In the afternoon, transfer back to Himare for some optional beach time and enjoy a free evening in one of the many lively tavernas in town, or sample a few cocktails by the beach.
Day 5
Hike the Old Prisoners Trail
Hiking3.5hrs · 7mi · 492ft up · 1312ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Today's hike takes you to the southern side of the Riviera once more. Starting 19 miles south of Himare, in Lukova, you'll walk by flower-adorned houses, down old cobblestone alleys and past a small waterfall. Continue through endless terraces of olive groves, followed by a smooth descent all the way to Bunec Beach where the open skyline, tranquil sea, and the unusual emptiness of the pebbly shore will make it hard to resist a refreshing swim! Hike through the hillside, soaking up the Mediterranean aromas as Borsh Beach slowly comes into view. Cool off with one more swim at the Riviera's longest beach before returning to the hotel. Enjoy one final night in Himare tonight, as you transfer back to Tirana after your final hike tomorrow.
Depending on the weather and season, your guide may recommend swapping the walks planned for days 5 and 6 to ensure the best experience for your group.
Day 6
Hike through Mediterranean backcountry
Hiking4hrs · 7mi · 1312ft up · 1312ft downDriving4hrsGuesthouseTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
Gear up for a big day. A short transfer takes you to the start of the final hike at the foot of Kudhes. Follow the winding road through olive trees and local houses into the heart of the village, and enjoy a coffee in the company of the friendly locals. Next, set off hiking along the rocky shepherd's trail lined with bright pink oleanders and lush green cypress trees. You may be greeted by flocks of curious goats as you climb up to the green terraced fields above the hamlet, with breathtaking views opening up to the deep blue sea and over to the island of Corfu. Reach the old town of Qeparo and stroll its maze of cobbled streets and ancient stone houses, enjoying the tranquility of this authentic Albanian village where time seems to stand still. This afternoon you'll transfer back to Tirana (via another backcountry route) for your final night in Albania's vibrant capital. Celebrate the end of your adventure with a group farewell dinner in the city. Cheers!
Day 7
Goodbye Albania!

Time permitting, Tirana is an inviting place to explore. Take a stroll, sip an espresso, observe the busy morning flow or shop for delicious treats at the lively New Bazaar. If you're interested in learning more about the city's Communist past, Bunkart 2 and The House of Leaves provide fascinating insights and are just a five-minute walk away from Tirana’s main Skanderbeg Square. Your host will then transfer back to the airport in time for your flight home.

FAQs
Who at Much Better Adventures designed this trip?
Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamed of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.
Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 55 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures, challenging treks to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.
What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community, and the environment.
What is Albania's Southern Coastal Trail?
The little-known Southern Coastal Trail stretches along 46 miles of Albania’s beautiful southern riviera (approx 4hrs south of Tirana), between the towns of Dhërmi almost all the way to Saranda. Although the area is mainly visited in summer with local and a few international tourists flocking to its dreamy beaches, the cultural heritage, panoramic trails, and culinary traditions of this region can be best experienced along a spectacular multi-day trek from village to village and beach to beach. We've picked the best combination of routes for this trip, with incredibly varied scenery featuring rugged mountain peaks, spectacular coastal trails, secluded beaches, rocky shepherds' paths, terraced fields, olive groves, and plenty of charming stone villages. Views of the seemingly endless blue sea contrasting with the backdrop of dramatic mountain ridges will accompany the trek throughout, and you'll have plenty of opportunities for refreshing swims in the Ionian Sea.
What should I do about drinking water?
Tap water in Albania is generally not safe to drink. You may find purified water in some of the accommodation which you can use to fill up each morning, so be sure to pack a reusable water bottle or two. To avoid plastic waste where filtered water is not available, we suggest bringing water purification tablets (or an alternative purification system) for extra safety.
What's Plan B in case of bad weather?
Overall, weather conditions down by the coast should be pretty favorable in the months when this trip is scheduled to run, with plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures ranging from 64 to 79°F on average. However, as always, Mother Nature is unpredictable so the best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with sunscreen, a hat and waterproofs. Your host will be monitoring the weather conditions during the course of the trip and may suggest alternative, safer routes or activities should the weather get particularly bad, or change the order and timings of the hikes. The Llogara National Park sits on alpine heights and forms a weather divide between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas; as such, the park is prone to rapid weather changes and cooler temperatures.
Can my dietary requirements be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Albanian cuisine is shaped by a long tradition of simple, resourceful cooking in a rugged landscape where communities historically grew only what the mountains allowed. As a result, meals remain hearty, rustic, and limited in variety, relying on local, seasonal ingredients and the roots of ‘cucina povera’. Rural guesthouses, restaurants, and hospitality providers that mainly serve a domestic audience are often unfamiliar with dietary restrictions and preferences, and special diets are not always well understood. While the food is wholesome and filling, travelers with specific dietary requirements should not expect a wide culinary range.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, you should be aware that traditional Albanian dishes can be meat-centered, and vegetarian diets are not common in certain areas that this trip visits. Having said this, there are several traditional dishes that are vegetarian by default with meat usually served as a separate side dish. Vegetarian dishes are considered shared dishes and are generally served to the entire group. Vegetarians are often served the same meals as everyone else, minus the meat or fish.
Vegan Vegan diets are very difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. Traditional Albanian dishes are meat-centered, and vegan diets are not common in certain areas that this trip visits. While it is possible to follow a Vegan diet on this trip, you need to be aware that options are very limited, lack protein, and can be quite repetitive. Without dairy and eggs, breakfast and picnic lunches are limited to bread and raw vegetables. Dinners are satisfactory in the majority of places, but the lodging hosts may require your input/guidance. Please bring calorie-dense and protein-rich supplements from home - snacks and items such as peanut butter etc - to supplement the meals and ensure you have enough fuel for the adventure.
Kosher Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
Halal Certified Halal supply varies by destination and cannot be guaranteed on this trip. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. At breakfast and for picnic lunches, fried doughs (such as petulla, pancakes) and bread are the staple foods. Gluten-free alternatives beyond the occasional dense and dry corn/maize bread are virtually unknown/unavailable so please do bring plenty of your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Lactose Free Lactose-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that alternative products are not available in this destination, and you may find the picnics provided somewhat limited. As cheese is a staple at breakfast and lunch, we recommend bringing your favorite snacks or supplements from home. Please also see the notes text on the vegan diet above.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

What's the weather like?
The best time to hike in this region is in spring from March to mid-June, or in fall between September and November when temperatures are milder, reaching daytime highs of 72-79°F. While Albania enjoys a great amount of sunshine, rain can be expected at any time of the year so you should be prepared for all eventualities. In Spring, the flowers are in full bloom and the greenery is striking, with slightly fresher water temperatures but the weather can be a little less stable. In Fall the sea is warmer, although the daylight hours shorten and the nighttime temperatures start to lower. The mountainous region of the Llogara National Park is always cooler due to the higher altitude, with temperatures between 59-66°F in spring and fall and the possibility of stronger winds. While villages and beaches are usually very busy in the months of July and August, exploring the region during spring and fall will allow you to avoid the crowds and have the trails and villages almost to yourself – bliss!
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 279kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
