Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

This five day trek in the wild Svaneti Mountains of Georgia is a great choice for those who love to hike on quiet mountain trails with daily views of high summits and glaciers. The terrain on the trail is mixed and ranges from easy paths to rough, rock-strewn climbs as you get closer to the glaciers. The amount of ascent and descent provided in the itinerary should not be underestimated. On several days you will hike above 2500m as you cross high mountain passes from one valley to another along the Transcaucasian Trail. Doing some practice hikes before the trip with your pack and boots is strongly recommended to help you prepare for this adventure!

What will I need to carry?

You only need to carry a daypack each day, including your waterproofs and at least 2L of water, as the rest of your luggage will be transferred by vehicle from one accommodation to the next. Please check our Kit List section for recommendations on what to pack for this trip.

High altitude (over 2500m): factors to consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Highly Remote Environments: Factors to consider

This trip travels through very remote areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited and evacuation may take a significant amount of time. In some locations, medical facilities may provide only basic treatment, and further travel may be required to reach a hospital capable of providing more advanced care.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, evacuation may involve multiple stages and different forms of transport before reaching appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may be unreliable for significant portions of this trip and communication may rely on satellite devices carried by your guides.

Your guides are trained and experienced in operating in remote environments and will manage the group carefully throughout the journey. However, due to the remoteness of these locations, access to external support may be limited and delays to medical care should be expected.

Before booking, consider your personal health and comfort travelling in locations where medical care and evacuation options may be limited or delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we strongly recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling. If you have a medical condition that may require rapid access to specialist care, regular monitoring, or emergency treatment, this type of remote travel may not be suitable without careful planning and medical advice.

Your travel insurance must cover the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation.

Food and Dietary info

Food will be a delicious mix of local Svan and Georgian national cuisine, cooked using produce grown or reared by the guesthouse owners themselves. Georgian cuisine is world-renowned for its mix of eastern and Western flavours, aromas and colours and is slightly spicy and usually based on meat, vegetables, cheese and fruit. There are also plenty of traditional dishes without meat, so vegetarians and vegans will be well catered for. Lunches will be picnic-style, out in the wilderness.

Georgia’s cuisine is diverse, and pescetarian, vegetarian and vegan diets are generally manageable. However, some nights of this adventure are spent in very remote areas, and in regions that are less developed for tourism, you'll often be hosted by local families, and it can be challenging for them to understand or cater to highly specific dietary needs.

If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’ For specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may get at home varies in different destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before making your booking to ensure that this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.

Georgia has long been on my bucket list and I am so very glad I decided to do it with MBA. The trip exceeded my expectations beyond measure. I couldn't have asked for a better experience, thanks in no small part to our fantastic guides, Sandro and Paro. Their professionalism and genuine care for the group were exceptional, but what made the trip truly special was the way they shared their knowledge, passion, and love for their country. Their enthusiasm was infectious and left a lasting impression on all of us. Above all, they brought an incredible sense of humour. There was never a shortage of laughter, and they embraced our group's playful spirit, even joining in with sillu photo opportunities and lunchtime frisbee games that became one of the unexpected highlights of the trip. They created such a fun, relaxed atmosphere that made an unforgettable adventure even more memorable. They adapted the pace to suit the group, shared fascinating insights into the region's history and traditions, and created a fun, supportive atmosphere throughout the trip. The scenery was simply *stunning*, the homemade Georgian food was plentiful and delicious and the cinema experience in Ushguli was a real treat. The trek itself is moderately challenging, so a reasonable level of fitness is needed, but the effort is rewarded with some of the most incredible mountain scenery you'll ever experience. If you're looking for an active holiday that's off the beaten path and combines stunning landscapes with authentic local hospitality, this trip is hard to beat. I would highly recommend this adventure to anyone who loves hiking and wants to experience one of Europe's hidden gems. It's a trip I'll remember for years to come. Cha Cha Cheers to Sandro and Paro - thank you both!

Nice week in Goergia with five great days of hiking in Svaneti. Stunning scenery, great mood in the group, good food and overall very well organized. Thanks to the guides Leri and Sandro for being great guides, always with a smile and proudly sharing their love for the area with us. I want to come back to Svaneti sometime, maybe in winter.

This was one of the most memorable travel experiences I’ve ever had. The landscapes of the Caucasus are breathtaking, but what truly made this trip extraordinary were our guides, Sandro and Paro. They didn’t just lead us through the mountains—they shared their home, culture, traditions, and genuine love for Georgia with us. Every day felt thoughtfully planned and incredibly well supported, whether we were tackling a challenging climb, learning about the villages we passed through, or gathering around the table each evening for meaningful conversations and traditional Georgian toasts. Sandro and Paro struck the perfect balance between professionalism and warmth. Their knowledge of the mountains, deep connections within the local communities, and attention to every member of the group made us feel safe, cared for, and welcome from beginning to end. They also brought so much joy to the experience through stories, humor, and countless small moments that transformed a hiking trip into something much more meaningful. One of the most remarkable parts of the week was how quickly our group of strangers became friends. Sharing long days on the trail, meals together, and the incredible beauty of the Caucasus created connections that I’m sure will last long after the trip ended. If you’re considering this trek, don’t hesitate. Come prepared for spectacular scenery, challenging and rewarding hiking, delicious food, rich culture, and guides who will leave a lasting impression on your heart. Georgia is a remarkable country, and this trip is an unforgettable way to experience it.

Georgia exceeded my expectations as did this trip. I can say, this being my 17th trip with MBA, once again, I’m very happy with the tour, the guides & the group. Sandro & Paro were pretty exceptional and made the trip that much better.

I recently completed a trek through the caucus mountains led by 2 outstanding guides : Sandro and Paro. Trekking in Georgia is not without its challenges. Weather conditions can change quickly. There are cows lying in the middle of the road. Some remote areas are still transitioning to embrace western tourists. Without capable guides things can go south quickly. Fortunately for MBA they had 2 outstanding guides leading our trek. Paro even had to jump in a fast flowing river and rescue a tourist who tried to cross without a horse ( as all MBA trekkers had done). The scenery in Georgia is beautiful and the people are great. It’s been a privilege to have visited this country.

I could not recommend this trip enough! Svaneti is such a beautiful part of the world, and this tour showcases its unique landscape, culture, and history. Being there felt like stepping back in time. Sandro and Levani, our guides, expertly handled everything, giving us a full, fun and stress-free tour of the Caucuses. They're also just good guys - it was my birthday during the trip, and they made sure my celebration was complete with birthday cake and plenty of cha cha. :) What really made the trip was the people - a fun group from all over the world. We left with great memories and new friendships.

This was the best tour or hiking trip I’ve done. The Caucasus are absolutely stunning and the scenery was so dramatic it felt like I was in a postcard the whole time. Add in the fact the trails are not super busy like elsewhere in Europe, you get to stay in historic Svan villages and the food was delicious and that makes it once in a lifetime. I went in mid July and there were miles of wildflowers, great weather and mostly sunny hot days. Sandro and Levani were excellent guides. They quickly adapted for everyone’s different hiking paces and they remembered each of our interests and made sure we got to try the snacks, drinks, see the history we all wanted. They both were such gracious hosts and I learned so much from them both. It was hard to leave!

This trip was a challenging, rewarding, and incredibly spectacular way to experience this gorgeous part of the world. Sandro and Levan’s pride in sharing their culture and creating a safe environment to explore made this trek what it is. We lucked out with a comfortable week of weather that made all the hikes doable, albeit some challenging ascents. I can’t recommend this enough and I think early July is the perfect time of year for flowers if that is on your list (it should be!)

What an excellent trip through Northern Georgia and the greater Caucuses. I had an amazing time, met the loveliest people, walked some stunning routes and was more than impressed by Georgia. Our guides were brilliant, Sandros & Levani made the trip something special.
  • An amazing trip

    Susan T. July 2026
I loved everything about this trip. The scenery was spectacular with a wonderful addition of all the wild flowers. We walked at a reasonable pace reflecting the abilities of the group and each day was varied and interesting. The accommodation was comfortable and the food fine. However the most enjoyable aspect of the trip was the people - the group members and the leaders. Our leaders Levani and Sandro worked very hard to ensure that the trip ran smoothly. They were both good fun and readily shared their knowledge about their country. Overall I highly recommend that you visit Georgia- its a hidden gem .
  • Excellent trip

    Emily B. June 2026
This was easily my favourite MBA trip so far. Levani and Sandro were excellent guides and the itinerary was very well designed, combining the three most interesting days of the classic Mestia to Ushguli hut‑to‑hut trek with two great out‑and‑back hikes to the Ushba waterfalls and Shkhara glacier. The final hike was slightly shorter, giving us time to explore Ushguli, including visiting the ninth-century church and watching a local film at a very unique village cinema. Accommodation throughout was excellent. Every hotel and guesthouse was comfortable, with hot showers available every night. The mountain hut in Iprali was a particular standout due to its spectacular setting. The vehicles were air‑conditioned and comfortable, and the long driving days were broken up with frequent stops at interesting viewpoints.
  • Absolutely 100% you should book this trip!

    Lucy A. June 2026
Gorgeous week of walking and learning about Georgia. The scenery and views were unbelievable, the walks were really well-organised and paced - catering for all paces - the whole week gave such a varied and unique insight into life there, staying at family homestays and trying the local food. Our guides Levan and Sandro went above and beyond to make sure that we all had the best time, sorting everything for us so we could just enjoy ourselves, they navigated a few hiccups seamlessly - rearranging walks in line with the weather - arranged surprise birthday cakes, explained the history of the country, showed us key cultural sites etc, and had seemingly endless patience, humour and energy. I’d really really recommend booking onto this tour, you’ll love it.

    TAN E. November 2025
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Georgia. Our guide Levani was the best! He obviously loved and knew a lot about his country, and took very good care of us. The scenery was beautiful and people we encountered so welcoming. One of the best tours we've joined.
  • Such a wonderful part of the world!

    Rebecca E. October 2025
We had an unforgettable experience on this trip! The autumn colors were absolutely stunning, creating the perfect backdrop for our adventure. Our guides, Levani and Sandro, were exceptional—knowledgeable, fun, and always making sure we had the best possible time. The hikes were manageable and well-paced, making the journey enjoyable without being too strenuous. The food was delicious throughout the trip, with plenty of great options even for vegetarians. Highly recommend!

    Great
  • Beautiful autumn trek through the Caucasus in late Sep

    Chui N. October 2025
Amazing trip with our guide, Levani who guided our hikes through the Caucasus with such professionalism and flexibility. Levani was super knowledgeable about Georgian history and Savanti culture. It was our friend’s birthday during the trip and while we only mentioned it in passing to Levani in the morning, he promptly prepared a birthday tort by the evening. The guesthouses were also an interesting experience where we enjoyed the warm hospitality of the locals while getting a glimpse of how they lived. The views from the trip was breathtaking especially in good weather- the pictures will give you a good idea. While we were unlucky and had a few rainy days, Levani managed to move some of our treks around so that we could still enjoy the best hikes. Overall, beginning of Oct would be the perfect time to visit the Caucasus to see the Autumn colours. Yes there could be a couple of cloudy/rainy days, but l would say that it adds to the mystique of the landscape.
  • Lots of laughter, great scenery, good food, great people

    Constantina P. October 2025
This trip was an absolute dream. The first couple of days the weather was quite bad and our guides were excellent are coming up with alternative plans for those two days so we weren't hiking in cold and heavy rain for hours on end. This didn't take away from the amazingness of the trip at all! The autumnal colours in Georgia at this time of the year are almost otherworldly. The scenery is breathtaking and being surrounded by snow-capped mountains was a joy. Food in Georgia is excellent and your belly will be full! Even for the non-meat eaters, you will be eating well. The accommodation that we stayed in was lovely and the nice big thick blankets helped to keep me warm at night! Big shout out to our guides Nugzar and Sandro. They were an absolute dream. I got sick on the last day and I felt very looked after by them. I am so grateful to both of them for their excellent guidance and brilliant sense of humour! Our group was wonderful and felt so lucky to have shared this experience with them. Thanks team :)
  • Fab hike!

    samantha b. October 2025
My first hike with MBA, and it's safe to say I would do another! The hikes each day were highly doable, but also challenging enough for those who are avid hikers already. A great addition of some wild swimming on a couple of locations (so cold but stunning locations). Our guides were fantastic, highly knowledgeable, hard working and made the trip really easy.
  • Stunning scenery in Svaneti

    Jennifer T. October 2025
This was my first MBA trip (actually my first time doing any kind of group hiking trip); it won’t be my last. The itinerary was great and well organised; accommodation was good (nice hotel in kutaisi, the guesthouses more basic but clean and comfortable). Lots of delicious Georgian food (especially at breakfast and dinner) including a lovely farewell dinner on the last night. The group were lovely, with a range of fitness (I found some of the ascents challenging, but they were doable and we had a guide at the back for the slower contingent!) and the scenery was absolutely spectacular. Ushguli in particular was amazing to see. Our guides Sandro and Levani were friendly, enthusiastic, warm and knowledgable. They were really welcoming and good company. All in all, a great trip!
  • IT'S CHACHA TIME!

    Steve K. September 2025
Great hikes, wonderful Georgian hospitality from the guesthouses and guides Paro and Nugo and a lovely group to keep us entertained all week on the trails. The weather didn’t play ball but that only added to the adventure. Highly recommended trip!
  • Glorious week of hiking. Lovely people. Delicious food.

    Steve C. September 2025
I've just finished thr Caucaus mountains in Georgia trip with MBA. Amazing week trekking the mountains from Kutaisi. We started off staying in a hotel then moved to guesthouse in the mountains then back to hotel for the last night. The hotel was cosy and nice. Guesthouse nice too . Some very basic but still nice and cosy. It gives you a real taste of Georgia life with the traditional food each day. You really immerse yourself in the culture over the week. The guides Levani and Sandro took care of us all well. They gave us great knowledge of the history and culture of each part of the trek. Really great people who know their craft well. The group was fantastic. We really all gelled well. Everyone came with positive vibes. Was sad to end it and would definitely do another MBA trip. Steve
  • Fabulous Trip!

Fantastic trip hiking in the Svaneti mountains! Our guides, Sandro and Levan, were exceptional - funny, kind, thoughtful, well organised and expert guides, as well as great ambassadors for their country. Highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in exploring Georgia and hiking in some stunningly beautiful mountains.
  • Hammock Hunting

    Joseph k. September 2025
Guides were fantastic, and complimented each other perfectly. I'd follow Parro through the gates of hell itself. Group was a pretty good bunch of bananas. Dogs were good, hammocks were good, cucumber and tomato was good, cha cha was good. Everything was good, including the rain.

For 2025 and beyond the itinerary has been updated, based on customer feedback, to make the route require fewer road transfers and allow for more time hiking point-to-point, giving the route a better "flow". The local host believes these changes will enhance the experience even further, as Much Better Adventurers really enjoy hiking in the Svaneti region of Georgia. There are now just two short road transfers within the hiking itinerary once up in the mountains: On Day 3, after you hike to see the Ushba waterfalls, there is a short 15km transfer from the guesthouse in Becho to your accommodation in Mestia. On Day 7, in the morning there is a short 10km transfer by road from Iprali to the historic settlement of Ushguli.

There will be 4x4 vehicle support throughout, so you can leave your main luggage/rucksack in the vehicle and just carry a daypack while trekking.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Georgian cuisine is deeply shaped by the country's position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, where centuries of trade, Orthodox Christian fasting traditions and a fertile agricultural landscape have produced a rich and distinctive food culture. Meals are generous and communal, typically featuring bread, cheese, walnut-based sauces, grilled meats and seasonal vegetables, with wine playing a central cultural role. Vegetarians can fare reasonably well, particularly during Orthodox fasting periods when plant-based dishes are more widely available, though the cuisine is broadly meat and dairy-centric. Travellers with less common dietary requirements should expect limited awareness outside cities and tourist areas, and guides can help communicate needs to local hosts.

SPECIAL DIETS Vegetarian -Vegetarian diets can be very well catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Georgian cuisine offers a wide variety of vegetarian dishes, including salads, vegetable stews, bean dishes, cheeses, breads, and walnut-based specialities. In more remote areas, meal choices may be simpler, but suitable options are generally available throughout the trip

Vegan -Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, and your host will do their best to accommodate these requirements when informed in advance. Georgian cuisine includes a good range of plant-based dishes such as salads, vegetable stews, beans, mushrooms, breads, and walnut-based specialities. In more remote areas, the variety of ingredients may be more limited, so meals can sometimes be simpler or repetitive, but suitable options are generally available throughout the trip .

Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Kosher -Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal -Certified Halal supply varies by destination and may not always be possible. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free -Gluten-free diets can be more challenging to cater for on this trip, but your host will do their best to accommodate these requirements when informed in advance. Bread and wheat-based dishes are common in Georgian cuisine, though there are also many naturally gluten-free options such as grilled meats, fish, eggs, beans, potatoes, rice, vegetables, salads, fruit, and some dairy products. In more remote areas, choices may be more limited, so meals can sometimes be simpler or repetitive. Travellers with coeliac disease or severe intolerance should also be aware that avoiding cross-contamination cannot always be guaranteed.

Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure

Lactose Free -Lactose-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. Georgian cuisine makes frequent use of dairy products, particularly cheese and yoghurt, though there are also many naturally lactose-free options such as grilled meats, beans, vegetables, salads, breads, and walnut-based dishes. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination. In more remote areas, choices may be more limited, so meals can sometimes be simpler or repetitive.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.

Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Add any specific limitations or important details here: In rural and remote locations, meal preparation is often basic and carried out in shared kitchens or by local hosts, so strict allergen separation and avoidance of cross-contamination cannot always be guaranteed. Guests with severe allergies should be aware that emergency medical facilities may be limited in some regions of the itinerary, and appropriate precautions should be taken accordingly.

You’ll be accompanied by an experienced, English-speaking lead guide throughout the trek, with assistant guides added depending on group size. The guide ratio on the trip is one guide per six trekkers. This means that for groups of Seven or more people, there will be two trekking guides.

The average temperature during summer in Georgia typically ranges from 25-35°C in the lower valleys. However, up on the plateaus and high in the mountains it will be colder, especially when exposed to the wind. For every 1000m of ascent, the temperature can be expected to drop by approximately 6.5°C. Mountain climates are notoriously unpredictable so it is essential to bring wet weather gear and layers to adjust your temperature as required. At night temperatures can drop down to 5°C. Dry sunny days are common (sunscreen/sun-protection is important) and rain at this time of year is rare but can happen.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 389kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
