Day 1
Straight to the river
ChaletTriple shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Arrive at Podgorica Airport, meet your host, and kick back for a scenic drive through Montenegro, making your way to the Tara River. Once you reach the riverside camp, check in to your cosy chalet, get to know your fellow adventurers, and chat through the adventure with your guide. Take in the beautiful scenery and perhaps grab a drink at the riverside bar. Then, dig into a tasty traditional dinner at the camp's restaurant to start off your adventure in style.
Day 2
Introduction to packrafting
Packrafting3-4hrs · 5miChaletTriple shareAll meals includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Today your host will give you the full lowdown on packrafting to prepare you for the mini-expedition ahead. Get acquainted with the gear involved and learn from the best as your experienced packrafting guides teach you everything you'll need to know. Hit the water in the packraft and get familiar with your trusty vessel, practicing in the calm waters in front of the camp. Once you've mastered the basics and are comfortable paddling in the calm parts, you'll head for the first proper river run in the afternoon, paddling down to the Bosnian border crossing. This section is 8km long and is mainly made up of Class I and II rapids – perfect for beginners to build confidence ahead of the adventure kickstarting proper tomorrow.

The mini-expedition begins

Now that you're all trained up it's time to set off down the Tara River Canyon for a proper adventure. Drive through stunning mountain scenery to the put-in spot near Žabljak, prep the packrafts with everything you'll need for the next three days, then set off. The liberating feeling of being on the river – far from civilisation carrying everything you need to be self-supported – will hit you straight away as you tackle the first few kilometres. The canyon is part of a large wilderness area and you'll have chances to spot chamois and deer, or if extremely lucky, wolves or bears. Stop for lunch on the banks and grab a swim in the river if you like before paddling further downriver this afternoon, navigating rapids and learning how to read the river to pick lines. Your first night in the canyon is spent wild camping on a remote beach, pitching your tent a few yards from the water and settling in for dinner and a memorable sleepout in this stunning spot.
Day 4
Deeper down the canyon
Packrafting5-6hrs · 14miWild campingTwin tentAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Wake up to the sound of river rumbling through the canyon, brew up some coffee and tuck into breakfast on the banks before packing down camp and cracking on with the expedition. You'll journey deeper into the canyon, with towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls flanking you as you go. You'll make regular stops during the journey on both days to stretch your legs, have a snack and enjoy some waterfalls and wild swim on calmer sections. Your second night in the canyon is spent in wild camping on one of the most beautiful beaches on the river, close to the border with Bosnia.
Day 5
Big rapids to the Bosnian border

The final day of the expedition is full of adrenaline all the way to the finish line. Hit the water and get ready for the biggest rapids of the trip as you tackle the fastest section of the river, a 6km long run with a number of class III rapids to tackle. By now you'll be at home on the river and in the packraft and had plenty of practice at controlling the raft down rapids. Your expert guides are on hand to help and if anyone feels uncomfortable on any rapids there are ways to skirt around them on foot on the banks of the river. Finish the final stretch of the packrafting route down to the Bosnian border crossing where you'll be picked up and be driven back to Camp Grab for a well-deserved drink to toast an epic achievement navigating the Tara River canyon. Enjoy a real bed tonight after the past three days in the wild.
Day 6
Hike and wild swim at Strabanska Lakes

Continue the adventure on dry land today as you bid farewell to the river and head into the mountains of the Piva National Park, close to the border with Bosnia. Set off on a hike through forested slopes to reach two beautiful mountain lakes. First up you'll arrive at Little Stabanska Lake before continuing on to its larger twin, Big Stabanska, a glistening emerald pool nestled beneath the towering mountain peaks of Bioč (2396m) and Volujak (2337m). The bigger of the lakes makes for a lovely picnic spot and the summer temperature of the water is an inviting 16-20°C – perfect for the wild swimmers in the group to soak up this little-visited swim spot. Descend back down the mountain and drive on to the final stop of the trip, settling into a lodge on the shores of Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula separating Montenegro from its neighbour, Albania, across the lake.
Day 7
SUP Skadar Lake
Stand Up Paddleboarding3-4hrsLodgeTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 7 detailHide detail
Time to get back on the water today, swapping packrafts for paddleboards to explore Lake Skadar and the Morača River which flows into the lake. The paddling today is a much more relaxing affair, taking in the majestic scenery and serenely gliding through the calm waters after your adrenaline rush on the raging Tara River. You'll set off from Vranjina village on the banks of the lake – your guide will adjust the start time depending on the time of year, to avoid the hottest part of the day. The paddle is a 12km loop, skirting along the lake to enter the Morača River. Paddle up the river until it forks off, taking the secondary channel to meander back downriver into the lake and along the shores back to Vranjina village. There'll be chances to stop for swims, stretch the legs on the banks and take in the scenery. Back at your lakeside lodge tonight you'll head out for a final dinner to toast an epic week of adventuring through Montenegro.

FAQs
How much should I tip?
Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however we suggest the below as a guideline, shared between the group:
€5-10 euros per day
Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
What do I do about drinking water?
You will need to bring reusable water bottles and/or a water bladder to carry water with you on the expedition and other activities on this trip. There are two taps with safe drinking water on the expedition section (from Day 3 to 5) – you can fill up in the morning at Camp Grab and then again at the two taps on the expedition. Your host will bring along a support raft for groups of six or more which will carry additional water for the group. Generally speaking, the water from the streams and waterfalls that flow into the Tara River is drinkable; however, it cannot be guaranteed that there is no bacteria in the water, so if you wish to fill up from these sources on the expedition for some added wild factor, we advise that you bring your own water filter. Have a read of our guide to the best water filters for adventurers.
Can I leave my excess luggage somewhere?
You can leave excess luggage at Camp Grab ahead of the mini expedition part of the trip (see 'Do I have to carry all my stuff for the trip?' below). Otherwise, you'll need to bring your luggage along for the rest of the trip to Lake Skadar and then back to Pogorica. Your host does not have storage options in Podgorica at the start of the trip.
What's Plan B in case of bad weather?
Your host knows Montenegro incredibly well having guided rafting, packrafting, kayaking and SUPing trips on rivers throughout the Balkans for many years. They will monitor the conditions and make alternative plans if required, but this is a rare occurrence. The hike is the most likely activity to be affected by weather, depending on the conditions at altitude.
What is the size/weight limit of the packrafts?
There are different size packrafts available which have a passenger weight range of from 50kg to 130kg, not including luggage.
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
Depending on the size of the group there will be 2-4 guides on the trip. This equates to 1 guide per 3-4 people depending on the water levels throughout the season.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips typically consist of a mix of solo travelers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.
It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.
Don't just take our word for it:
- 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
- 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
- 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
See here for more info about the Much Better Adventures tribe.
What's the weather like?
Average temperatures from June to September are generally in the mid 20s(°C) but can reach into the 30s(°C) in July and August. Note that temperatures do drop in the evenings by several degrees. High up in the summits you may also encounter cooler conditions and stormy weather cannot be ruled out at any time of year. Although your host will do their very best to run the itinerary as scheduled, this will be always subject to safe weather conditions.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 32kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
