Day 2
Journey to the island of Vranjina
Kayaking5-7hrs · 13miCampsiteTwin tentAll meals includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
After an early breakfast, you’ll hit the road and head toward Lake Skadar National Park, eventually arriving at Rijeka Crnojevica - a medieval village on the eponymous river. Today, this tucked-away fishing village is an idyllic spot, set around a beautiful arched limestone bridge, but back in the 15th century, it was Montenegro’s capital. You’ll prepare the kayaks here and leave anything you don’t need for the next two days in the support vehicle. The adventure begins with a gentle paddle along the Rijeka Crnojevica River, winding through stunning scenery with the Accursed Mountains as your dramatic backdrop. After 5-7 hours of paddling, including rest stops and a riverside lunch break, your goal is the island of Vranjina, nestled between the Moraca River and Lake Skadar. Following dinner at a local restaurant, you’ll set up camp on the island, with your first day’s adventure under your belt.
Day 3
Crossing Lake Skadar
Kayaking5-6hrs · 11miWild campingTwin tentAll meals includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Start your day with breakfast at the campsite before heading out onto Skadar Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southern Europe. Today, you’ll paddle towards the picturesque fishing village of Radus, with spectacular views of Rumija Mountain on one side and the Accursed Mountains on the other. From there, continue your journey past Krnjice Village and the historic island monastery of Starceva Glava. Your efforts will be rewarded as you arrive at Murici Beach, a stunning and peaceful wild camp spot, where crystal-clear waters gently lap against the pebbled shore. Take a refreshing swim, then tuck into a well-earned Montenegrin dinner before settling into camp for the night.
Day 4
Murici to Ckla
Kayaking4-6hrs · 11miCampsiteTwin tentAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Wake up in this fantastic lakeside spot and ease into the morning with a dreamy swim before fueling up with breakfast. Today you’ll kayak past a scattering of small islands dotted with monasteries, stopping off for a short guided tour at Beska. Led by the local nuns, you’ll gain insight into the monastery’s rich history and what life is like on the island. It’s then back on the water to paddle across the widest section of the lake. This part of Lake Skadar sits within Europe’s largest bird reserve, giving you the best chance to spot endangered Dalmatian pelicans, one of the largest flying bird species on the planet. The day ends with a final push to Ckla, a village right on the Albanian border, where you’ll set up camp in the gardens of a charming guesthouse and tuck into a delicious home-cooked dinner.
Day 5
Crossing the border into Albania
Kayaking2-3hrs · 5miHotelTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
After breakfast, it’s time to sort out some paperwork and get your border transit documents stamped—a pretty unique border crossing experience, especially in the middle of a kayaking adventure through the Balkans. With the admin done, it’s back on the water to tackle the final stretch of Lake Skadar before it flows into the River Bojana. Within 2 miles of paddling this morning, you’ll officially enter Albanian territory, passing the village of Zogay en route to Shkodar. Today is a lighter day, helped along by the river current as you exit the lake. Before reaching the city of Shkodar, you’ll stop at the well-known fishing village of Shiroka, famous for its seafood restaurants lining the lake’s edge. Here, you’ll dine on fresh fish and sip delicious Albanian white wine in a stunning setting. Time permitting, there’s also the chance to pump up the paddleboards and switch up your posture and perspective on the water. Later, you’ll enter the historic city of Shkodra, the traditional capital of northern Albania and gateway to the Albanian Alps. This evening, you’re free to explore Albania’s oldest city, known for its arts, culture, religious diversity and excellent sundowner spots. Enjoy a group dinner downtown before heading back to your lovely hotel in Shiroka on the shores of the lake, for a good sleep ahead of the final push to the sea.
Day 6
Shkodra to the Adriatic Sea
Kayaking6-8hrs · 27miHotelTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
The final day of your adventure is here, with the Adriatic Sea inching ever closer as you paddle through the longest stretch of the trip. Bid farewell to Shkodra and head downriver, crossing back into Montenegro as the Bojana River widens to 200ft, its waters fresh and crystal clear. The inflow of the Drim River increases the flow and helps to propel you towards the sea. For around 9 miles, you’ll paddle right along the border between Albania and Montenegro, with the borderline running straight down the center of the river. Just a few miles from the coast, you’ll officially re-enter Montenegro and make the final push towards Ada Bojana and Velika Plaza – a stunning 8-mile sweep of sandy beach on the glistening Adriatic Sea. This is the finish line of your epic journey! After covering more than 62 miles under your own steam, it’s time to unwind. Celebrate with a swim in the Adriatic, a drink or some fresh seafood at a beachside bar, and a well-earned rest. Your final night is spent at a gorgeous hotel in Ulcinj on the Adriatic coast. Settle in here before tucking into dinner and raising a toast to the incredible adventure you’ve just completed.

What's not included

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however we suggest the below as a guideline, shared between the group:
- €5-10 euros per day
Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

FAQs
How does the journey work?
Each day you'll fuel up on breakfast at the campgrounds, hotels or guesthouses you'll have stayed at the night before. You'll have time for some coffee and a morning swim in the rivers or Lake Skadar before loading up the kayaks and setting off. Your host will give each group member a large drybag at the start of the expedition to pack away your sleeping bag and clothes, while you'll bring along a smaller drybag of around 10 liters to pack away your phone, camera and other valuables. Everything else will stay in your main luggage which will be left with the support vehicle - you'll be reunited with your luggage each evening after completing the latest leg of the expedition.
Do I need to be able to swim?
Yes, the ability to swim is a mandatory safety requirement to participate in this tour.
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
There is one kayak guide for every 6 participants on this trip, plus the driver of the support vehicle who will assist with expedition logistics throughout the trip.
What if things don't go to plan?
Your host designed this unique route after many years of guiding kayak, SUP, and packraft trips in the Balkans. They know the route, logistics, and conditions better than anyone, and alternative options have been factored in. While rare during the season that the trip operates, if conditions such as high winds or heavy rains affect any day of the expedition, your host will make alternative arrangements. You may need to skip a day on the water and head off for a hike, a wine tour, or visit local villages instead.
What type of kayaks are used on this tour?
You'll be paddling in a single-berth expedition sea kayak. The model is the Expedition HV - made from high-tech material to provide rigidity, weight, comfort, speed, and durability. These kayaks will help tackle the distances involved on this trip with comfort and speed, designed to easily handle choppier conditions if the wind picks up.
What is the size/weight limit of the kayaks?
The kayaks used on this trip have a passenger weight limit of 230 lbs , not including luggage.
What should I do about drinking water?
You will need to bring reusable water bottles and/or a water bladder to carry water with you on the expedition. There is safe drinking water at each of the hotels and campsites which you can fill up from in the morning. Your host will carry additional water for the group, approximately 2 liters per person per day in a large carrier. You are also able to fill up directly from the lake and rivers on the trip for some added wild factor, however, this will of course require that you bring your own water filter: Have a read of our guide to the best water filters for adventurers.
Can I store my excess luggage somewhere?
You can leave excess luggage in the accompanying vehicle while you are on the expedition. Your host does not have storage options in Podgorica at the start of the trip.
Can my dietary requirements be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form as soon as possible with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Montenegro’s cuisine reflects a meeting point between the Adriatic coast and the Balkan interior, shaped by fishing and Mediterranean olive groves alongside mountain farming, Ottoman and Venetian influences, and a tradition of preserving foods for winter. Typical meals can be a satisfying mix of Adriatic freshness and hearty Balkan comfort, with grilled meats and vegetables, cheeses, stews, and breads inland, and lighter seafood-based dishes nearer the coast.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is aware in advance. There are plenty of appealing meat-free dishes to look forward to, from chargrilled seasonal vegetables and crisp salads to slow-cooked bean dishes like prebranac (check it’s made without meat) and warming vegetable soups and stews. You may also come across filling local staples such as savory pies and potato-based dishes.
Vegan Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance, but you should expect fewer options and variety than you may be used to, especially in more rural areas where meals are traditionally built around meat and dairy. Vegan-friendly choices are becoming more commonplace, however—look for prebranac (slow-baked beans with onions and paprika), simple vegetable stews, salads, grilled or roasted veg, tomato-based pasta dishes, and ajvar—a roasted red pepper spread.
Kosher Fully certified kosher options are limited in Montenegro and are mainly found in larger cities. On this trip in more rural areas, kosher-supervised kitchens and ingredients may not be available, so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.
Halal Montenegro is not a predominantly Muslim country so fully certified halal options are limited and are mainly found in larger cities. In more rural areas, halal-certified kitchens, meat, and supply chains may not be available so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options may be more limited compared to those without dietary requirements. While your local hosts will do their best, it’s worth knowing that gluten-free provision may vary in rural areas where it is harder to source specialist products and rural kitchens may be unable to guarantee no cross-contamination. Therefore, meals will more often be based on naturally gluten-free dishes rather than specialist substitutes. That said, many standard meals already include several options without gluten, even without special preparation, including meats, potato dishes, rice, eggs, and salads. Please do consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Lactose Free Lactose-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as vegetable dishes, pasta, rice and potato dishes, legumes, and salads.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy (including Celiac disease), please get in touch with our Customer team before booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.
*Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

What's the weather like?
The area around Lake Skadar spanning Montenegro and Albania enjoys a Mediterranean climate with distinct seasonal variations. Things can get uncomfortably hot for a trip of this nature from mid-July through to mid-August, so we don't run trips during this period. Here's an overview of what you can typically expect on the trips we run from April to June / September to October:
April: Spring begins and the area becomes greener with blooming vegetation. Daytime highs average around 59–68°F, with cooler nights at 46–54°F. Some rainy days, but sunny spells increase.
May: Pleasant and warm with highs of 68–77°F, with nights around 54–59°F. Expect mostly sunny days with the odd bit of rain.
June / early July: Early summer with long sunny days. Highs of 77–86°F, and nights are comfortable at 59–64°F. There is minimal rain during the month of June.
Late August / September: Early autumn has mild, pleasant days, with temperatures of 77–86°F, and nights cooling slightly to 59–64°F. A slight increase in rainfall, but generally dry.
October: Autumn sets in, bringing cooler and wetter weather. Highs of 64–73°F, with cooler nights at 50–57°F. Rain becomes more frequent, but sunny intervals remain.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 138kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
