Your journey begins in the peaceful northern city of Chiang Rai, known for its lush landscapes and welcoming indigenous communities. Many international flights connect through Bangkok directly onto Chiang Rai, while others may require booking a separate domestic flight – giving you the option to spend extra time in the city if you wish. Either way, Chiang Rai is easy to reach and a beautiful place to start your Thailand adventure. Hop into your airport transfer and drive to your home for the next three nights – The Legend Chiang Rai, a stylish boutique hotel that is ideally located for exploring the city. Later in the afternoon, meet your group leader and fellow travelers for an optional orientation tour. Hop on a traditional tricycle and explore the lively night market, sampling delicious street food and browsing local crafts. If you’re arriving later in the evening, feel free to head straight to the hotel to settle in and get a good night’s rest before your adventure begins tomorrow.

After a brief safety briefing and personalized bike fitting, you'll pedal past rice paddies, fruit orchards, rubber plantations, and teak groves – a relaxed and scenic glimpse into rural Thai life. Your first stop is the iconic White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), a dazzling creation by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. With its shimmering mirrors and surreal details, it’s a striking blend of Buddhist symbolism and contemporary art. After lunch at a nearby local restaurant, transfer by private songthaew to the vivid Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) – equally impressive with its rich blue-and-gold design, serene white Buddha, and intricate murals. Back at the hotel, enjoy some downtime or perhaps treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment. After a couple of active days exploring northern Thailand’s temples, jungles, and countryside, today is all about slowing down and soaking it all in – you’ve earned a little indulgence. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading out to the peaceful Ahsa Farmstay, nestled in the foothills of Doi Mae Salong. You’ll be welcomed with a cup of hot herbal tea before enjoying a guided walk around the farm, where you’ll gather fresh ingredients like herbs, vegetables, and eggs for your cooking session. In a hands-on Thai cooking class, you’ll learn to prepare a selection of traditional regional dishes – from a fiery chili paste to a comforting coconut milk soup, a sweet banana dessert, and a seasonal vegetable stir-fry. After all your hard work in the kitchen, sit down to enjoy the feast you’ve created, served with organic steamed rice, fresh fruit, and tea or coffee. At the farm, you'll also have the chance to enjoy an included herbal steam sauna and turmeric facial mask, followed by a full-body Thai massage using fragrant herbal oils. Here, you'll explore the incredible Chiang Dao Cave system. Accompanied by a local ranger and lanterns, you'll venture into both the illuminated chambers and the darker recesses of the cave, discovering dramatic limestone formations and centuries-old Buddhist shrines tucked within this sacred site. The trail leads to Pong Ngan Lahu Village, a peaceful riverside community beside the Mae Taeng River. After enjoying a leisurely lunch in this tranquil setting, prepare to hit the water on kayaks. What's not included
Our trips do not include flights, trains, or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.
Six dinners and one lunch are not included in the cost of this trip. This allows you to enjoy greater flexibility and explore local dining options at your own pace, especially in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. We recommend budgeting about USD100-150 in total to cover these meals (excluding drinks).
While tipping in Thailand is not mandatory, it’s a meaningful way to show appreciation for good service. For this trip, we recommend the following:
-THB 150 – 250 (USD 5-7) per person per day for the main tour leader, based on the level of service and overall experience. -Tipping Kitty: We suggest collecting approx. THB 1,500 per person (USD 45) for the entire program. This will cover tips for local guides, drivers, and other support staff throughout the trip.
Please avoid tipping with coins, very small denomination notes, or dirty and ripped notes; culturally, this is regarded as an insult. Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.

FAQs
Is the domestic flight included in the trip price?
Yes, a domestic flight from Chiang Mai to Phuket is included in the trip price and will be booked by your host once the trip departure is guaranteed to run. Flights are usually with airlines such as AirAsia or VietJet, typically scheduled for late morning or around noon.
Because these flights are booked early to secure group travel, a portion of your deposit becomes non-refundable after booking (unless the trip is canceled by us or your host, due to unforeseen circumstances). We recommend booking early to ensure you fly on the allocated group flight. If the group flight is full at the time of your booking, your host will inform you of alternative travel options. In such cases, you may travel on a different flight and arrive at the island earlier or later than the main group.
What do I do about drinking water?
Tap water in Thailand is not safe to drink. Clean drinking water will be provided throughout, so please pack your own reusable bottle – it will be well used. There will be a large drinking water container provided on the vehicles for you to refill your bottle with.
Is there anything I should know about Thailand’s Burning Season?
Yes – burning season in northern Thailand typically occurs between February and April each year. During this time, agricultural burning in the region can cause haze and reduced air quality. The intensity varies each year depending on weather conditions, wind, and government controls. We understand this might be a concern, so here’s what you need to know:
- Our experienced local teams monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as needed.
- If any area is closed for safety or conservation reasons (such as sections of Doi Suthep–Pui National Park), we’ll adjust the itinerary and provide a similar alternative activity – you’ll still get the full adventure experience.
- Bring a mask, just in case. While many guests don’t find the smoke disruptive, we recommend packing a mask for outdoor activities. This is a precaution we suggest purely to ensure your comfort.
We remain hopeful that air quality will continue to improve in the coming years, thanks to local and government efforts. Most importantly, previous travelers have continued to enjoy their trips during this season without issues.
Will the tropical climate or seasons affect the itinerary?
This trip is scheduled to run from October to April to make the most of Thailand’s drier, cooler months – avoiding the peak of the monsoon season and extreme summer heat. However, due to the effects of climate change, weather patterns can occasionally be unpredictable, so it’s always best to come prepared for a mix of conditions. Minor changes to the route, order, or timing of the activities may be necessary once you’re on the trip. Your host will ensure any changes, if necessary, are kept to a minimum, and your guide will keep you in the loop as the trip progresses to ensure that you have an awesome time.
Can I leave my excess baggage somewhere?
Due to the point-to-point nature of this trip, your luggage will travel with you throughout the journey. Please note that for the included domestic flight, a checked baggage allowance of 44 lbs applies. Be sure to pack accordingly to avoid excess baggage fees.
What type of kayaks are used?
The kayaks used will be sit-on-top kayaks, all of which will be doubles. Sit-on-top kayaks are very stable and easy to paddle for everyone, from new paddlers through to experienced paddlers. Sit-on-top kayaks can be used on the sea, estuaries, rivers, lakes, and canals.
What is the size/weight limit of the kayak?
In both Mae Taeng and Phang Nga Bay, you’ll be using a mix of tandem inflatable and polyester canoes or kayaks, with an average maximum weight limit of 550 lbs.

What's the weather like?
This trip runs between October and May, offering ideal conditions to explore both northern and southern Thailand.
In Northern Thailand (Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Taeng, and surrounding areas), you can expect mostly dry and comfortable weather during these months. Daytime temperatures typically range from 77–91°F with cooler evenings; great for trekking, cycling, and cultural exploration. October marks the end of the rainy season, so the landscapes are lush and vibrant. By March and April, temperatures can rise significantly – sometimes peaking above 95°F – so be prepared for very hot conditions toward the end of the season.
In the south (Phang Nga Bay and Koh Yao Noi), the dry season runs from November to April, bringing sunny skies, warm seas, and gentle breezes. Temperatures typically sit between 79–90°F, ideal for kayaking, island hopping, and beach time. Occasional short showers may occur in May or October, but they’re usually brief and won’t disrupt activities.
Please note: Between February and April, northern Thailand may experience periods of haze or reduced air quality due to agricultural burning. While our trips have not been affected in the past, conditions can vary year to year. Our local team monitors the situation closely and will adjust plans if needed to ensure a smooth experience. We recommend packing a mask for outdoor activities, particularly if you have asthma, allergies, or other respiratory sensitivities. If you’re concerned, you may prefer to book outside this window.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 752kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
