Hike deeper into the cirque to uncover hidden shepherds’ huts and tumbling streams, with a good chance of spotting marmots along the way. End the day with a refreshing dip in the glacial waters of Lac des Aires, surrounded by waterfalls and hanging glaciers.

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

A scheduled group transfer is included between Toulouse Airport and Luz Saint Sauveur, timed to meet flights arriving around lunchtime. Lourdes Airport (LDE) is closer but has fewer flight options. You can choose to fly into Lourdes and make your own way to the hotel, or request a private transfer through your host. If you arrive at Lourdes in the afternoon, it may be possible for your host to collect you en route from Toulouse - check with them when booking.

Travel options

From the UK: There are frequent direct flights to Toulouse from London Heathrow (British Airways), London Gatwick (easyJet), and London Stansted (Ryanair), with flight times around 2 hours. Flights typically arrive late morning to early afternoon.

From the US: There are no direct flights to Toulouse. The simplest route is to fly into Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY) from major US hubs (New York, Boston, Atlanta, etc.), and then connect to Toulouse by a short 1 hour 20 minute flight, or by high-speed TGV train (approximately 4–5 hours).

Trip level explained

Level 4

Moderate-Challenging

This adventure includes a mix of moderate and more challenging days, with 5–7 hours of hiking through varied mountain terrain and up to 3,000ft of elevation gain per day. Trails are rocky and uneven in places, with both ascents and descents. The pace is relaxed but steady, with time for swims and scenic stops along the way.

You’ll need to be comfortable spending full days on your feet, tackling climbs, descents and mixed surfaces. If you regularly enjoy hill walks, weekend hikes or similar outdoor activities, you’ll be well prepared. Wild swims are short, refreshing dips in cold mountain water — or you can simply paddle or relax by the shore.

Most of the tougher hikes include options to shorten the route, but during the refuge-to-refuge trek you’ll need to complete the full day’s walk.

What will I need to carry?

On day hikes, you’ll carry a 30-40L daypack with water, snacks, swimwear, and spare layers. During the mini trek, you’ll also need to pack overnight essentials for two nights in the refuges, including a sleeping bag liner, toiletries, and a change of clothes. Your main luggage will be stored at the hotel in Luz Saint Sauveur.

High altitude (over 8,200 ft): factors to consider

This trip visits locations at or above 8,200ft, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group well-being, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatize can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Hot climate: factors to consider

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Everything about this trip was great. Firstly the scenery was out of this world. I was not super fit but there were options to vary the route. Definitely test out your walking boots first. The guides were fabulous and very accommodating. The food was also delicious and lived up to expectations of French cuisine. Overall a great time-merci beaucoup!

FAQs

Wild swimming in the French Pyrenees is all about refreshing dips in rivers and glacial lakes after your hikes, the perfect way to cool off and unwind in stunning surroundings. Your guide will lead you to each swim spot, where you’ll usually have time to relax, enjoy a picnic and take a dip if you fancy. Swimming is entirely optional and always intended as a short, revitalizing cool-down, rather than a guided open-water swim where you’re expected to cover a distance.

Your guide will remain on shore during swims, and these spots do not have lifeguards or other supervision, so please don’t swim out of your depth or beyond your comfort level. Water temperatures in summer are cold, often 50–59°F in the high lakes, so always test the water before entering. As these are natural locations with limited facilities, we recommend bringing a large towel or robe for changing, and neoprene shoes for rocky entries.

Refuges are simple but welcoming. Expect shared dormitories (usually mixed gender) with bunks, mattresses, and blankets. Bring a sleeping bag liner. Facilities are basic, with shared bathrooms and communal dining rooms where meals are served.

You'll be led by one qualified International Mountain Leader, who is also your swim guide. No additional support crew is required for this trip.

Your guide is experienced at managing mountain conditions and will adapt the itinerary if needed for weather, safety, or group well-being.

The signal is patchy in the higher valleys and around the refuges. Wi-Fi is not available in the huts; enjoy the digital detox.

Yes, your larger bag can be safely stored at the hotel in Luz Saint Sauveur while you are on the mini trek.

Tap water is safe to drink in Luz Saint Sauveur. In the mountains, you can refill from refuges and some streams. We recommend bringing purification tablets or a filter for untreated water.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

The Pyrenees — stretching between France and Spain with a small section in Andorra — have a mountain cuisine built around shepherding, preserved foods, game, beans, cheese, and slow-cooked stews. Food varies between the Basque, Catalan, Béarnais, Aragonese and Gascon regions, but there are strong common themes: hearty dishes designed for cold winters and high mountain living.

From June to September, expect warm, sunny days in the valleys, with average highs in the low to mid-70s°F. Temperatures are cooler at altitude and can drop close to freezing at night, especially in the mountain refuges. Weather in the Pyrenees can change quickly, so be prepared for sun, rain, and cloud in a single day — good layers and waterproofs are essential.

June: Early summer may still bring snow at higher elevations and the lakes are at their coldest. Trails are quieter.

July–August: The warmest months, with valley temperatures in the mid-70s°F and long daylight hours. Popular with hikers and families.

September: Cooler, crisp days and fewer crowds. Evenings can be chilly but swimming is still possible.

Lake and river swims are always refreshing — expect water temperatures around 50–59°F in high lakes, and slightly warmer in lower rivers.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 114kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
