    Meet your group at Venice Marco Polo Airport and jump in your private transfer to Val di Funes. Nestled beneath the jagged Odle Peaks, this peaceful valley is one of the most photogenic corners of the Dolomites and a true gem. The small alpine villages scattered along the valley, including Santa Maddalena, are known for their wooden farmhouses, wildflower meadows and sweeping views of the Puez-Odle Nature Park. Your base for the next three nights is Hotel Kabis, a welcoming, family-run alpine retreat in San Pietro village, complete with a cosy restaurant, bar and small wellness area – the perfect place to unwind after travel. You’ll have time to settle in and perhaps stretch your legs with a short walk before dinner. You'll also meet your guide to go through the hiking plans for the week, before enjoying a relaxed group dinner at the hotel.

    Hike to Col di Poma and Rifugio Genova

    After breakfast, set off for one of the most scenic hikes in Val di Funes. The trail climbs steadily through alpine pastures and pine forests, passing the Kaserill mountain hut, the only one in the valley producing its own cheese – a perfect stop for a tasting before continuing the ascent. You’ll then follow a panoramic trail up to Rifugio Genova (2306m) and the nearby Col di Poma (2422m), a beautiful lookout surrounded by the austere rock amphitheatre of the Odle and Puez groups. From the top, the views stretch across to Sass Rigais (3025m) and the peaks of Val Badia, a reminder of how wild and varied this region is. There are some narrow and occasionally exposed sections along the route, but nothing too technical for confident hikers taking it steady. After soaking up the views, descend back to the valley and return to your hotel for a well-earned dinner and relaxing evening.

    Beneath the Odle Peaks: Ranui to Rifugio Brogles

    After breakfast, set off directly from the village of Ranui for a classic Dolomites hike through lush meadows and dense larch forests, gradually ascending along a trail that follows a mountain stream. The route winds gently beneath the dramatic spires of the Odle Group, including Cima Fermeda and Seceda, offering postcard-perfect views at every turn. As you climb higher, the landscape opens up to wide alpine pastures with sweeping views across the Funes Valley. Your destination is Rifugio Brogles (2045m), beautifully set in a natural amphitheatre just below the towering Geisler/Odle Peaks. From here, you’ll enjoy one of the most striking panoramas in the Dolomites – a front-row view of the jagged ridges and verdant valleys that define this UNESCO World Heritage region. After soaking in the scenery (and tucking in to a well-earned lunch at the rifugio), retrace your steps back down the valley and back to the hotel in time to relax before dinner.

    After breakfast, depart early from Zannes for one of Val di Funes’ most scenic routes – the Adolf Munkel Trail. The path starts gently through woodland and along a small stream before opening up beneath the striking limestone towers of the Odle/Geisler range. The section beneath these cliffs is among the most photographed in the Dolomites, with open alpine meadows, traditional farm huts and superb views of the jagged spires above. The hike passes through an area dotted with malghe (alpine huts) traditionally used for summer grazing, where shepherds once made cheese from freshly milked cows. After a relaxed stop for refreshments and time to enjoy the scenery, return to the trailhead. This afternoon, jump into a minivan for the 1.5 hour drive to Dobbiaco in the Val Pusteria, your base for the second part of the trip. In the heart of the northern Dolomites and near the Austrian border, this picturesque Tyrolean town is surrounded by spectacular 3000m peaks and endless accessible trails that make it a mecca for hikers.

    After breakfast, settle in for a 30-minute drive to Prato Piazza (1991m), a wide alpine plateau surrounded by meadows and wildflowers. Begin your hike up to the 2307m Monte Specie (also known as Strudelkopf) – a panoramic summit offering sweeping views of Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Monte Piana, and Monte Cristallo. On clear days, this is one of the most breathtaking vantage points in the Dolomites. Stop for a light lunch at Rifugio Vallandro, a cosy mountain hut offering traditional dishes and stunning terrace views, before descending back to the trailhead. The rest of the afternoon is free to spend at your own pace: relax at the hotel, explore the pretty town of Dobbiaco, or visit one of the area’s beautiful lakes, such as Lake Dobbiaco. You could even visit the world-famous Lake Braies, though expect big crowds here during peak season. Head out to dinner wherever you like this evening; your guide will be happy to recommend some local restaurants or pizzerias in town.

    Val Fiscalina to Lake Landro via the iconic Tre Cime

    After an early breakfast, transfer by bus to Val Fiscalina, the starting point for one of the Dolomites' most spectacular hikes. This route follows a quieter and more rewarding alternative to the crowded Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop, allowing you to enjoy outstanding views of these iconic peaks while avoiding the busiest sections. The trail begins gently through forest and meadows at the foot of the Sesto Dolomites. As you ascend, the trees thin out, revealing ever-expanding panoramas of rugged peaks - Croda dei Toni, Cima Undici and Monte Popera forming an unforgettable amphitheatre of Dolomitic rock around you. The route traverses below the northern face of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, bringing you up close to the unmistakable symbol of the Dolomites. You'll stop to enjoy lunch with this world-famous view before beginning your long descent towards Val di Landro, where the route ends at Lake Landro. Today is a longer and more tiring day of hiking, but the rewards are immense: varied terrain, dramatic scenery at every turn, and a full immersion in one of the most breathtaking corners of the Dolomites.

    Klammbach Ridge: between Italy and Austria

    After breakfast, take a short transfer to Versciaco and ascend by cable car to Mount Elmo (2041m), where today’s panoramic ridge hike begins. The route follows an old World War I military trail that traces the crest of the Carnic Alps, forming the natural border between Italy and Austria. Hike along open ridgelines with spectacular 360° views over the Austrian Alps on one side and the jagged Dolomitic peaks on the other – a truly memorable finale to your week in the mountains. Stop at the Sillianer Hütte for a refreshment, before beginning your descent on a quieter, rocky path through alpine meadows and wild pastures dotted with wooden huts. Continue down to the charming Klammbachalm for another well-earned break – the perfect spot for a slice of homemade cake or a cold drink – before following a gentle forest trail towards the valley floor and the village of Moos. From here, you'll return to Dobbiaco by public bus and enjoy a final dinner together with your group this evening.

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

On Day 1, your driver will meet you at Venice Marco Polo Airport around 14:00 (please ensure your flight lands by 13:30 at the latest to allow time for baggage collection and customs). The exact meeting time will be confirmed by your host before departure, depending on the group’s incoming flights. From Venice, you’ll travel together by private minibus to Val di Funes, a beautiful alpine valley at the foot of the Odle mountains; the journey takes approximately 3.5 hours, including a short refreshment stop en route. On Day 8, you’ll be transferred from Dobbiaco back to Venice Marco Polo Airport, arriving usually by 12:30. This may vary depending on traffic, so please avoid booking flights departing before 14:30 to ensure a smooth connection.

Please note that alternative transfers between Venice and the Dolomites are very expensive, and public transport connections are limited and not always convenient. To avoid missing the group transfer, make sure you allow sufficient time between your flight’s arrival and the scheduled 14:00 departure. The group vehicle will not be able to wait long beyond this time. In the unlikely event of a major delay, the best option is to take an official taxi from the airport. Expect to pay around €300–€350 for a one-way trip to Val di Funes. Official airport taxis are available just outside the arrivals terminal – you can confirm the fare with the driver before departing or contact the 24-hour taxi service on +39 041 5964. Please also notify your host as soon as possible if your flight is delayed.

If your flight schedule allows, you might consider spending some time in Venice before or after your adventure. There’s luggage storage at the airport, and regular shuttle buses connect Venice Airport to Piazzale Roma in around 20 minutes (approx. €20 return ticket), making it easy to enjoy a few hours exploring the city before your transfer to the mountains.

Travel options

Venice Marco Polo Airport is accessible via various direct flights from the UK and mainland Europe. Flights from the US generally connect through Madrid, London or Frankfurt.

For those who wish to avoid flying, Venezia Mestre is well connected with high-speed trains from London, via Paris. The journey will take an average of 21 hours and usually involves two changes.

Given the trip begins with an afternoon transfer from Venice Airport, you might consider arriving the day before and taking the opportunity to visit the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage City of canals, art and romance. When visiting Venice, check first if you are required to pay the Venice Access Fee (applicable to some dates only).

During your first three nights in Val di Funes, dinners will be enjoyed at the excellent restaurant at Hotel Kabis – a warm, family-run spot known for its welcoming atmosphere and classic Tyrolean and Ladin cuisine. Expect generous homemade dishes prepared with local ingredients, such as hearty soups, alpine cheeses, traditional dumplings and a choice of homemade desserts – perfect after a day in the mountains. For the second half of your trip, based in Dobbiaco, three dinners will be included in selected local restaurants, allowing you to sample some of the area’s regional flavours and relaxed alpine dining culture. One evening is left free, giving you the chance to explore other nearby options – from traditional inns and pizzerias to cosy wine bars, all within easy reach of your hotel. Lunches are not included, but each hiking day includes a stop at one of the Dolomites’ charming mountain huts (rifugi), where you can enjoy a choice of simple yet delicious local fare – from freshly made sandwiches to polenta with wild mushrooms, canederli (bread dumplings with speck), or barley soup. Each hut has its own character and panoramic terrace, so lunches are as much about the setting as the food.

You’ll be hiking an average of 4–7 hours per day in a high-alpine environment, so a good level of fitness and some previous hiking experience are recommended to enjoy the trip fully and safely. You’ll be guided by a local hiking guide who knows these trails inside out and will set a steady, supportive pace for the group. Across the five hiking days you’ll cover 10–16km daily, with ascents and descents of up to 1000m on uneven, rocky terrain. Don’t underestimate the effort required – some days include sustained climbs and descents, particularly on routes like Col di Poma or the Fiscalina Valley hike via the Tre Cime, while others, such as the Adolf Munkel Trail and Monte Specie, offer steadier but still rewarding terrain.

If you’re not used to multiple days of mountain hiking, some advance preparation is recommended. Regular hill walks, stair climbs, or strength and cardio training will help build endurance and confidence.

This is a non-technical trek, so no ropes or via ferrata gear are required, but you’ll encounter varied alpine conditions, from forest paths and meadows to rocky ridgelines and uneven descents. Some short, open sections have a bit of exposure, but all trails are well-maintained and suitable for fit hikers used to mountain terrain. Most hikes take place at an altitude of between 1200m and 2500m, with scenic viewpoints including Col di Poma (2422m), Rifugio Genova (2306m), and the Sillianerhütte ridge on the Italian–Austrian border offering spectacular panoramic rewards.

The weather in the Dolomites can change quickly, so proper hiking gear and layering are important for your comfort and safety.

What if i need to skip an activity?

This itinerary is designed as an immersive hiking experience, and we strongly encourage everyone to take part in the daily hikes – they’re the heart of the adventure and suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. However, if you’re feeling tired or need a lighter day, you can usually stay at the hotel and enjoy some downtime instead. Both properties have relaxing facilities and easy access to cafes and walking paths nearby. Your guide will always brief the group on the next day’s route so you can decide whether to join or rest. Please note that if you choose to skip an activity, any additional transfers or meals would be at your own expense, though your host can help advise on local arrangements.

During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal rucksack with your essential items for the day; you can leave your main luggage at your hotel.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

The Dolomites are known for changeable mountain weather; you can experience sun, wind, and rain all in a single day. Your guides are experts in the region and will adapt the route if needed to ensure safety and enjoyment. In case of really adverse conditions, hikes may be shortened, swapped for lower-altitude routes, or replaced with scenic valley walks or cultural visits in nearby villages. Rest assured, you’ll still spend plenty of time outdoors exploring the incredible landscapes.

The Val di Funes section of the trip is generally quieter and more traditional – a landscape of Alpine meadows and the Odle spires that still feels tucked away from the main tourist hubs. By contrast, the Dobbiaco and Val Pusteria area is closer to some of the Dolomites’ best-known landmarks, meaning it naturally attracts more visitors. To balance both sides, your guide may plan some early starts and lesser-known variants (including an alternative to the classic Tre Cime loop) so you can enjoy the region’s highlights while still finding space and serenity on the trails.

You’ll be led by one experienced, English-speaking hiking guide throughout the week. The guides are fully qualified and know the area well. Group size is capped at 12 travellers, ensuring an atmosphere where everyone can move at a steady, comfortable pace. No additional support crew is required, as this trip is hotel-based and all daily logistics (transfers, luggage handling, etc.) are pre-arranged and managed by your host and guide.

Since this is a hotel-based trip, you’ll have a permanent base for your luggage throughout. You’ll stay three nights in Val di Funes and four nights in Dobbiaco, so any excess baggage can be safely stored at your hotel while you’re out hiking each day. There’s no need to carry your main bag on the trails, just bring a comfortable daypack for your essentials (water, snacks, layers, camera, etc.). Your main luggage stays securely at the hotels, ready for you when you return each afternoon.

The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles (at least 2L) to fill up at the mountain huts to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

All hikes on this itinerary take place between 1200m and 2500m. You’ll climb to scenic viewpoints like Col di Poma (2422m), Rifugio Genova (2306m), and along the Sillianerhütte ridge near the Austrian border, as well as high passes around Tre Cime di Lavaredo. These elevations mean you’ll experience the full alpine environment – with cooler air, occasional snow patches early or late in the season, and spectacular views – but no technical altitude acclimatisation is required. The hikes remain within safe, accessible high-mountain levels for fit trekkers.

On some days, you’ll set off directly from your hotel, while on others you’ll reach the trailheads by private minivan, with short transfers of around 15–40 minutes, depending on the route. All transfers are pre-arranged and included in the trip price, so logistics are fully taken care of.

Your adventure is split between two very different valleys, offering a real contrast of scenery and atmosphere.

  • The Val di Funes is quieter and more rural, known for its picture-perfect alpine meadows, jagged Odle peaks, and iconic views of the Santa Maddalena church. It’s the Dolomites at their most idyllic and traditional.
  • The Val Pusteria is more open and expansive, home to the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo and beautiful alpine lakes like Lago di Braies and Lake Dobbiaco. Here you’ll find slightly longer, more challenging trails and grand panoramic ridges.

Together, they showcase two distinct faces of the Dolomites – wild and tranquil vs. dramatic and iconic.

The Dolomites enjoy some of the best weather in the Alps, with long, sunny summers and crisp mountain air – perfect for hiking. This trip runs from June to early October, when trails around Val di Funes and Dobbiaco are at their most accessible. In June and early July, you can expect fresh mornings and lingering snow patches on higher trails, particularly around Zsigmondy Hut or Monte Specie. July and August bring warmer temperatures (up to 28–30°C in the valleys) and lush alpine meadows, but also a higher chance of short, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms – it’s best to start hikes early and carry a waterproof layer. By September and early October, the weather is cooler and clearer, with quieter trails and the start of autumn colours – ideal conditions for hiking. Regardless of the month, mountain weather can change quickly, so packing for both warm sun and chilly winds at altitude is essential.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 268kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
