Day 1
Welcome to Bali

Touchdown in Denpasar, where your host will meet you for the transfer east to your first base in Sideman. The drive takes around 90 minutes, traveling through a picturesque valley en route to one of Bali's lesser-known spots. Sidemen is a tranquil, rural valley nestled in the foothills of Mount Agung known for its classic emerald-green rice terraces, traditional weaving, and a slower pace of life, and it offers an authentic, uncrowded alternative to hotspots like Ubud. At the resort, you get your first proper look at where you'll be staying for the next four nights, with views over to Mount Agung and the soft sound of a river running 200ft below in the valley, surrounded by working rice terraces. There's time to settle in and get your bearings before the group comes together for a welcome dinner, and you'll chat through the hikes and yoga sessions ahead.
Day 2
Yoga, rice terrace hiking, and a Balinese cooking class
Yoga1hrCooking Class1hrHiking2.5hrs · 2mi · 771ft up · 771ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Wake up to the peaceful surroundings and settle in for your first yoga and breathwork session. A local, qualified instructor joins the group for each of the sessions at Mahagiri over the next three days, leading you through Vinyasa or Hatha classes, depending on the day. The yoga shala here is in a magical setting, with Mount Agung appearing as the sun rises, lush green gardens around you and a statue of Buddha nestled in the corner of the plot. With your first yoga session over, take a short transfer to Sideman village to get your bearings with a light walk here and a visit to the market and a family-run organic farm. Here, you'll get stuck into local life with a hands-on cooking class, making dishes over charcoal using recipes passed down through their household, before sitting down to eat what you've made together. Back at the resort, you'll head out for a hike down through working rice terraces and subak irrigation channels to the valley floor and back, following farm lanes and hamlet paths. If you're still shaking off your journey to Bali yesterday, you are also welcome to relax by the pool instead. Enjoy the quiet vibe here later this evening with dinner at the base ahead of a bigger hike tomorrow.
Day 3
Hike the Temple Eight Trail
Yoga1hrHiking4hrs · 4mi · 1640ft up · 1640ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Settle in for sunrise yoga this morning, enjoy breakfast, and then grab your daypack for a big hike in a beautiful area. You'll be driven to the start of the Temple Eight Trail, near the Lempuyang temple complex, an amazing trail in the hills east of Sideman. The route mixes forest paths with open ridgelines and takes in several temple compounds, starting near the well-known 'Gate of Heaven'. The trail takes you away from the visitors waiting for the iconic mirrored photo here, meandering through quieter sections of the temple complex itself. You'll stop for lunch at a village warung along the route, and there'll be plenty of time to explore the temples up close. You'll arrive back at the resort in the late afternoon, with the evening free to rest up after an amazing day. There are some excellent restaurants and cafes within walking distance of Mahagiri if you fancy eating out tonight – your guides will provide recommendations and guidance as needed.
Day 4
Hike the Bali Aga indigenous villages
Yoga1hrHiking3hrs · 3mi · 1148ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
The rhythm of life on the trip is settling in by now as you enjoy another yoga session at sunrise, before a relaxed breakfast taking in the views of Mount Agung as the day wakes up. Hop in the van for a drive to Kastala village, picking up the trailhead here for a point-to-point hike toward Tenganan – one of Bali's oldest indigenous villages, famous for preserving pre-Hindu Bali Aga culture. The trail gradually descends, following irrigation channels, then crosses a simple bamboo bridge over the river, climbing gently through rice terraces and coconut groves as valley views open up along the way. Arriving in Tenganan, you'll walk the main street with your guide, visiting family compounds and small weaving workshops where geringsing, a double ikat textile that can take years to complete, is still made on working looms. A local guide from the village joins the group to offer fascinating insight into life here. You return to the resort in the afternoon, with free time to soak up the last of your first base; tomorrow you are heading west towards Mount Batukaru for the next chapter of the trip.

Bid farewell to your yoga instructor after one last session at Mahagiri, then check out and settle in for the scenic journey heading west towards the highlands around Mount Batukaru. On the way, you'll stop at the Jatiluwih rice terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its subak irrigation system, as well as the incredible scenery. Hop out of the vehicle here and walk for around an hour through the terraces with your guide, learning how the subak cooperative decides who gets water and when, a system that's been run this way for centuries. From there, the road continues into the forested slopes of Batukaru, arriving at your next base in the mid to late afternoon. Sarinbuana Eco Lodge is a special place, surrounded by rainforest home to 130 species of birds, with beautiful communal areas for relaxing and a wonderful, natural, chemical-free pool to cool off in. After settling in, you'll see the raised rainforest shala for the first time as you meet your next instructor and enjoy a gentle arrival practice before tucking into a delicious dinner from the lodge's garden-to-table menu. After dark, a spotlight night walk with a guide from the lodge takes you out looking for fireflies, owls, civet cats and other nocturnal forest life.
Day 6
Yoga, villages, and permaculture gardens
Yoga1hrHiking4hrs · 6mi · 820ft up · 820ft downEco LodgeTwin shareBreakfast includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
Wake up in your magical new surroundings this morning, and wander over to the treetop shala amidst the sounds of the rainforest waking up. Join your instructor for a session of yoga and breathwork to ease into the day. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before heading out for a guided walk through Sarinbuana's long-established permaculture gardens. More than 180 species of plants grow here, and the walk covers how soil-building, companion planting and mixed cropping underpin the lodge's food system and connect with neighboring farms. From the gardens, you continue hiking on through the forest, passing nearby hamlets, coffee and clove plots and mixed farmland, meeting local residents along the way. Back at the lodge, the afternoon is free for you to relax or explore further – there are mountain-fed natural pools within easy reach on foot nearby. If you opt for downtime at the lodge this afternoon you can cool off in their chemical-free pool, book in for a massage with a local therapist, or grab a seat on the terrace and do some birdwatching before dinner.
Day 7
Hike to Belimbing in the shadow of Mount Batukaru

Another dreamy yoga session kickstarts your day in the treetop shala, stretching out your limbs and energizing you ahead of the longer of the two Batukaru hiking days. Today you'll lace up boots for a meaty hike towards Belimbing village, with around 4-5 hours on foot to reach there. The route crosses traditional terraces, steep ridgelines and smallholding plots, with broad views over the valley and mountains and the iconic peak of Batukaru, following local paths rarely used by other visitors. Reaching the remote, serene village of Belimbing, you can dwell here for a short while before returning to Sarinbuana later in the afternoon. You know the drill by now: soak up the pool, the sauna, grab a massage or relax in the gardens, ahead of another evening with your fellow adventurers tucking into the delicious dinners on offer here. Life at Sarinbuana is very special.
Day 8
Hike to one of Bali's most sacred temples

More amazing sights of the Batukaru area await you after this morning's yoga session. You'll set out on a hike heading west through farmland, bamboo groves, and mountain forest toward Pura Luhur Batukaru, one of Bali's nine directional temples and a key spiritual site on the island. After reaching the temple, your guide talks you through how the temple fits into island-wide cosmology and local village practice, and a simple blessing is available if you'd like one. The hike is a point-to-point route lasting around 4-5 hours, and you'll return to Sarinbuana by vehicle in the afternoon for a final forest-side dinner and some time with your hosts before moving on tomorrow.
Day 9
Head to the coast

Lap up one last yoga session with your instructor, a final moment of meditation and reflection in the special shala setting you've enjoyed for the past few days. Enjoy breakfast at the lodge with time to say goodbye to your hosts before the late-morning transfer from Sarinbuana to Sanur, on Bali's east-facing coast. The drive takes around 2-2.5 hours, including a short scenic or cultural stop (chosen depending on the season). You'll check into a beachside hotel just a short walk from the promenade, with the afternoon free for a sea swim or a wander along the beach. In the evening, the group comes together for a farewell dinner at one of your host's favorite nearby warungs for a final feast of Indonesian flavors, and chance to toast a memorable and restorative trip.

What's not included
Our trips do not include flights, trains, or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.
Several dinners and a couple of lunches on this trip are not included. The menus at your two bases Mahagiri and Sarinbuana are a la carte style, with dishes varying each day depending on the season and produce grown nearby – or in Sarinbuana's case, directly on site in their garden. The food on this trip is a real highlight, so Much Better Adventures and your host feel the best experience is to order whatever you like from the menu each night, allowing you to sample and explore the array of Balinese and Indonesian food to its fullest as per your own taste.
You should budget around IDR 150,000-200,000 ($8-11) per person for each dinner, and the same for the two lunches not included.
Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your host can help with advice, however, we suggest budgeting the below as a guideline:
- $70-100 USD per person for the whole trip, to cover tips to your main guide, yoga instructors, and any service staff you might wish to tip.
Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality. A tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional food and drinks, shopping and laundry.
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate coverage for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and gear, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment coverage, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer coverage for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

FAQs
Can my dietary requirements be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form ASAP with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Indonesian cuisine reflects the country's extraordinary diversity as an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, shaped by centuries of spice trade, Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic influences, and a tropical climate that yields rice, vegetables, coconut, and an abundance of fresh produce year-round. Meals vary considerably by region but are typically bold and aromatic, centering on rice accompanied by grilled meats, fish, tempeh, tofu, and rich spice-based sauces, with strong local traditions differing between islands such as Java, Bali, and Sumatra. Vegetarians can generally find workable options given the widespread use of plant-based proteins like tempeh and tofu, though fish-based condiments and meat stocks are common and may not always be obvious. Travelers with specific dietary requirements should expect variable awareness outside tourist areas, and guides can be a vital resource in communicating needs clearly to local cooks and hosts.

However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team before booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
What do I do about drinking water?
Tap water in Indonesia is not safe to drink. Filtered water is available at each of the locations you stay at on this trip, allowing you to fill up your reusable bottle each day and avoid single-use plastics.
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
You'll have a main tour leader and a hiking guide on groups of up to 7 people. Groups of 8-12 people will have a tour leader and two hiking guides. A certified Indonesian yoga instructor joins the group at Mahagiri and Sarinbuana for the yoga sessions.
Can I leave my excess baggage somewhere?
Your luggage can stay with you for the whole trip and will be transported for you. You won't return to the same hotel you stay at on the first night of the trip, so it's not feasible to leave luggage there to return to collect. Your host can store any additional luggage at the start of the trip at their office if you request this in advance.
Is this a 'serious' retreat?
Absolutely not! This is far from a standard yoga retreat. Don't expect to follow a rigid and strict activity schedule or a restrictive detoxing diet. This adventure was designed for people who practice and love yoga, or who are just curious about it and want to experience the amazing benefits it brings for the first time. But it’s also fun, with plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding nature trails on foot, and enjoy delicious food and wine, all in the company of like-minded people. Relaxing and not taking yourself too seriously is kind of mandatory here!
What type of yoga will I be doing on this trip?
Sessions will be a mix of Vinyasa and Hatha – instructors will typically draw on both throughout the trip, depending on the day.
Are the yoga instructors qualified?
Yes. You will have two different yoga instructors on this trip, one at each base. Both instructors are Indonesian and fully qualified.
What if things don't go to plan?
Your host is an expert in all things Indonesia, specializing in itineraries across Bali and has been running trips in the region for many years including many happy Much Better Adventures groups on our Coast to Coast Traverse of Bali (opens in new tab) and Hike and Kayak Indonesia's Remote Islands (opens in new tab) trip. If weather or other factors affect the ability to visit a particular place or carry out a specific activity, your host will have plenty of alternative options available.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website (opens in new tab), where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information (opens in new tab) and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

What's the weather like?
The Indonesian island of Bali has a tropical climate, with warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. Daytime temperatures typically range between 77°F and 86°F, with slightly cooler conditions in the highlands, particularly during early mornings and evenings.
The dry season runs from May to September and is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and yoga. During these months, rainfall is minimal and skies are generally clear.
The wet season lasts from October to April, bringing higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in short, heavy bursts during the afternoon or evening. Despite the rain, temperatures remain warm, and showers are usually brief enough not to disrupt daily plans.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
