Key Information
Day 1
Journey to Dahar, deep in Tunisia's south

Driving
Upon arrival at Enfidha-Hammamet Airport you'll be met by your local guide, then you'll hop on a long scenic transfer south, deep into Tunisia's remote Dahar region. Here you'll find one of the oldest mountain ranges in Africa inhabited by the Amazigh, the indigenous people referred to as the Berbers. Over the course of the week you'll be hiking through a striking arid landscape, dotted by rocky foothills and desert valleys, oasis towns, wild canyons and ancient villages carved out of rock. The region's allure extends beyond its historic citadels into the boundless expanse of the Grand Erg Oriental, in the Sahara Desert. Tonight you'll bed down in a characterful family-run gite in the town of Douiret, a stunning mountaintop Berber village where you'll enjoy the unique experience of sleeping in traditional troglodyte cave-like rooms.
Day 2
Hike to the fortified Berber village of Chenini

Hiking
Enjoy a traditional Berber breakfast at your guesthouse, then set off on foot to explore the village of Douiret, before descending the hill of Douiret, along a scenic trail immersed in a barren landscape, with rocky hills and red plateaus dotted by palm, fig, and olive trees. You'll be trekking along one of the 12 stages of the Great Dahar Crossing, Tunisia's first long-distance trail, reaching the impressive 12th-century ksar (castle) of Chenini in time for lunch at a local restaurant. This former fortified granary stretches into the tops of two mountains, separated by the white-washed mosque of the Seven Sleepers in the middle. Today, the hamlet is still inhabited by about 600 people, although much of this ancient village is in ruins. Step back in time as you wander around the cave dwellings and narrow alleys, then catch a transfer back to your cozy gite in Douiret. Tonight you'll tuck into a traditional home-cooked dinner, featuring Tunisian dishes from the area.
Day 3
Hike the Berber gems of Zammour and Ksar Hallouf

Hiking
Driving
Leave Douiret after breakfast and transfer two hours north toward Zammour, an authentic Berber village hidden in the heart of the Matmata Mountains. Today's hiking trail winds through rocky hills and valleys typical of the Dahar region, with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscapes. You'll also pass an old olive press, a small oasis, and several small settlements where you can get a unique perspective of Berber farming traditions and learn about the resilience of these remote desert communities. Reach the well-preserved Ksar Hallouf in the afternoon, a former stronghold against invaders, with time to explore its unique architecture. Tonight you'll bed down in another authentic troglodyte guesthouse located on a permaculture farm on the outskirts of Zammour.
Day 4
From the heights of Jbel Mzanzen to the Sahara

Hiking
Driving
Start early today to embark on a more challenging yet rewarding route to the top of Jbal Mzanzen (2,001ft), one of the highest points in the Dahar region. Setting off in Zammour, the trail leads into the foothills of a prominent mountain range characterized by rocky slopes and sparse vegetation, typical of semi-arid regions. As you ascend Jbel Mzanzen, the terrain can be rugged and uneven, requiring some careful navigation. At the top, you'll be rewarded with some breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, dotted by ancient ruins and fortified granaries, testimony of a rich cultural heritage amidst the stark beauty of the desert landscape. The hike continues through olive groves before climbing to a plateau above a sheer-sided valley, where views stretch across the plain to the coast. From here, you’ll follow a narrow trail carved high along one side of the valley before stopping for lunch. At the end of the hike, you’ll transfer to Douz, the gateway to the Great Oriental Erg where you will settle into your comfortable fixed desert camp in Sabria, and tuck into dinner here at the restaurant.
Day 5
Sahara desert trek and a night under the starry sky

Hiking
Grab breakfast at your camp, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure into the Tunisian desert. Today you'll hike among the monumental beauty of the Saharan dunes, accompanied by a caravan of camels which will be carrying your overnight gear. The Grand Oriental Erg is known for its striking sand formations, sculpted by the wind, which reach impressive heights and create breathtaking views that extend as far as the eye can see. At sunset, the team will pitch your tents in a sheltered spot and you’ll enjoy the spectacle of the dunes bathed in a golden glow. Later, when night falls, warm up around a campfire. Far from any light pollution, watch the desert sky revealing itself in all its splendor, studded with bright stars and perhaps even a few shooting stars. Tuck into a delicious meal before you fall asleep in a comfortable bivouac for a night under the stars, lulled by the tranquility of the desert and the twinkling of the stars.
Day 6
Trek back through the desert dunes to Tozeur

Hiking
Driving
Wake up in the remoteness of the Sahara, then trek back out to Sabria via a different route traversing more dunes. There is time to freshen up at the fixed camp, before continuing by transfer. On the way there will be time for a short stop off at the vast Chot el Jerid salt lake, the largest salt lake in the Sahara with a surface area of more than 2,700 square miles. With luck, you may be able to admire its rainbow-colored salt deposits. Your scenic journey ends in the old city of Tozeur, a beautiful oasis with thousands of palm trees, known for growing the best dates in all of Tunisia. You'll have time to explore the vast oasis and the old medina and its marvelous geometric architecture, as well as visiting the market. Tonight you'll stay at a luxury riad, a haven of peace with hidden interior courtyards filled with vegetation, a swimming pool and a spa where you can try an (optional) traditional hammam. Tonight, you may like to head out for dinner at a local restaurant in town (not included).
Day 7
Trek up the Sidi Bouhlel canyon and head to the seaside gem of Hergla

Hiking
Driving
Enjoy a delicious traditional breakfast at your Dar, then leave Tozeur behind and take a short transfer to Sidi Bouhlel, 12 miles northeast of town. Prepare to be amazed at each turn and bend as you hike through an impressive canyon with towering cliffs, winding paths, and hidden pools amidst stunning rock formations that date back millions of years. This site is also the filming location of several famous movies, such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones. This afternoon, rest your legs as you embark on a long journey back up north. You'll spend your final night of the trip in the charming seaside town of Hergla, a hidden Tunisian gem along the Mediterranean coastline in the Gulf of Hammamet. Compared to other popular resorts nearby, Hergla preserves an authentic small-town charm and it's the perfect place to relax after a busy week exploring the arid wilderness of Dahar. If you have energy, join a farewell dinner with your group, then get some rest in the comfort of your local guesthouse.
Day 8
Goodbye Tunisia
After seven days in the arid mountains of Dahar and the Sahara Desert, it's time to bid farewell to your fellow travelers and head back to the airport for your flight home. Enfidha Airport is just a short drive away, so your host can arrange a transfer any time you choose to depart today. If your flight is later in the afternoon or evening, you can make the most of your time – perhaps soaking up the sun on one of Hergla's beaches. Alternatively, get lost in the town's alleys shopping for local crafts, immersed in the picturesque cobblestones, whitewashed walls, cobalt window frames and pink bougainvillea, with the sea providing the perfect backdrop.

What is the food like?

Tunisia’s cuisine reflects the diverse history and cultural influence of various civilizations that have crossed its lands, including the Berbers, Arabs, Ottoman Turks, and French. One of the defining characteristics of Tunisian cuisine is its use of spices such as cumin, ground coriander, and saffron, plus harissa, a fiery chili paste made from red peppers, garlic, and spices. While in Dahar, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a spread of included home-cooked meals and some fresh picnic lunches. Staple dishes include couscous (semolina wheat prepared with a stew of meat or vegetables), tajine (different from Moroccan tagine – made with beaten eggs, cheese, meat, and vegetables), shorba (soups), salads, pastas, stews, kaak (pastries), and samsa (a traditional pastry). In the desert, you'll learn how to make the typical Berber 'sand bread' and warm up with some mint tea.
If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be accommodated on this adventure?’ for specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may get at home varies in different destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before making your booking to ensure that this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.
What is the accommodation like?

Douiret
Spend the first two nights of your trip in a unique lodging in the Berber village of Douiret. Raouf and his family will welcome you warmly to the traditional troglodytic-style rooms carved out of rock (or, for the claustrophobic, in one of the ghorfa, fitted out in old granaries overlooking the yard). Accommodation will be in twin-share rooms and bathroom facilities are shared (separate for men and women). You're welcome to hang out in the many common areas in the property, including cozy, colorful decorated lounges and panoramic terraces. WiFi is available in the guesthouse's restaurant, where you'll also have your daily breakfasts and home-cooked evening meals.

Zammour
Spend one night in Zammour at Dar Ennaim, a family-run rural lodge nestled in an idyllic setting, in the hollow of a mountain. Accommodation will be in authentic twin-share troglodyte dwellings, with traditional decor and private restrooms. The property has its own permaculture farm, from which the owners source fresh organic ingredients for the dinners served on-site.
Dune Insolites
Before embarking on your overnight Sahara Desert trek you'll spend a night at Dunes Insolites, a comfortable fixed desert camp offering large twin-share tent accommodation complete with plug sockets, hot showers and a restaurant café with shisha.

Sahara Desert
On this night, you'll venture deeper into the desert followed by a caravan of camels. Here, you'll spend a peaceful night in a bivouac tent, either on top of a dune for unrivaled panoramic views, or near an oasis to benefit from the freshness and surrounding greenery. Your camel drivers will prepare the shelters for the night, as well as a delicious meal cooked over a wood fire, under the stars.

Tozeur
Spend one night within the medina of Tozeur at a beautiful dar, usually Dar Nejma or Dar Noor. Behind their imposing studded door, these dars are a peaceful haven, offering lush interior courtyards, a swimming pool, indoor and outdoor lounges, sun terraces, and a gourmet restaurant. All the twin-share rooms come with en suite toilets and have unique decor and character. Occasionally, due to the makeup of the group and the size of these characterful accommodations, the group may be split across two properties or accommodated at another dar of a similar standard.

Hergla
On your final night, you’ll stay in Hergla in a characterful local guesthouse – usually Dar Jedeti Khadija or Dar Yessine. These properties offer simple yet nicely decorated rooms, some with a terrace or patio, as well as air conditioning. Depending on the group size, you may occasionally be split across two properties.
Upgrades
For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room and tent at the hotels and desert camps can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (please note that availability is limited due to the size of the accommodation used).
The best time to visit southern Tunisia’s Dahar region is between October and May, when daytime temperatures are generally pleasant, averaging 64–81°F. This is a true desert environment, meaning there can be a big difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures.
While days can feel warm, winter months (December–March) can be very cold at night, particularly when camping in the desert around Douz. Temperatures can drop to around 32°F or even lower, and cool desert winds can make evenings and early mornings feel colder than expected.
To stay comfortable, it’s important to pack warm layers, including a good well-insulated jacket and thermals, alongside lighter clothing for daytime hiking. Being prepared for both warm days and cold nights will ensure you get the most out of this desert adventure.
Best hiking holiday!
A highly recommended trip to Tunisia! Great guide (Ahmed), great hikers, great variety of landscapes to hike. A perfect short getaway but in a totally different culture and landscape.

Hike Desert, Canyons and Berber Villages in Tunisia
I recently went on this week long hiking trip and it truly exceeded my expectations. I felt like I was on a holiday of a life time! The people were like minded and we all got along so well as we had a lot in common. The accommodation was so cool and after a full day of hiking, beautiful views I can honestly say I have never slept better.
Unique stays experience
All the hotels are very unique (some are a bit problematic for taller people, but still very interesting). Cool views on the hikes, lot's of food.

A trip of a lifetime. Wonderful!
I consider myself a traveller, but honestly, this trip was very approachable and appropriate even for a less adventurous hiker. It is a hiking trip (so not suited for someone seeking luxury and easy days), with hikes appropriately graded as moderate. And I loved every minute!
Our guide for the whole tour, Ahmed, was knowledgeable, funny, authentic, honest. . he took such good care of us. Everything was smooth from start to finish. I also messed up my arrival transport and Houssem worked it out for me, no complaints. The guides went out of their way to accommodate the varying levels of fitness and enthusiasm, always kind and smiling. The local tour guide in Zammour was Ziad, and he was a wonderful guide and such a good human. The camel drivers were awesome and Abdelmajid and Fatih sang traditional songs by the campfire in the Sahara and made us fresh bread in a sand pit fire.
The hikes are just challenging enough, with regular breaks. Ample water provided, and needed, so was glad I brought a water bladder and electrolytes. We were well fed, although a bit repetitive, I was never hungry but did have some snack items with me, as per the kit list.
The hotels were 2 or 3 star, as is the norm in Tunisia, but clean and so unique! Sleeping in cave homes in a berber village, cute BnBs, a tent base camp and one night of tent camping. Such an experience!
Advice: if you are a vegetarian, bring nuts or other portable proteins. Bring layers but don’t overdo it, as you will wear just hiking clothes all week. A collapsable backpack is great so you can bring just the necessities on the camel for the desert portion.
The MBA travellers were amazing people and everyone was quickly integrated, respectful of space but also so open and cheerful. I had a solo supplement so I could have some downtime in the evenings, but if that had not been possible, I could easily have shared space with these other great, considerate people.
I have now travelled to 49 countries and this trip ranks easily in my top 5. If you have any concerns on Tunisia, know I never once felt unsafe or even uncomfortable in the whole 10 days. We were clearly welcome, and Ahmed is a seasoned guide who will keep you comfy cozy. I am often cold at night and he scouted ample blankets for every stop and I was never cold. Thank you Ahmed for the trip of a lifetime. I truly feel I have seen what Tunisia has to offer, and wow! 5 stars.

Thoroughly Tunisia
What an incredible week. The itinerary was brilliant, and a great group dynamic. I especially loved the hiking around Douiret, Ksar Hallouf and Chenini and staying in the caves (I cannot imagine a better night's sleep than in a cosy, silent cave up a mountain). Ahmed is a brilliant guide, very attentive to the needs of his guests, as well as being thoughtful, funny and full of interesting information. He helped me find vegetarian food (nuts are a great source of protein and lots of varieties are available), and I really recommend ojja (Tunisian shakshuka) which is delicious and you can ask for no egg. You might want to bring teabags if you're embarrassingly addicted to tea. Our driver Aziz was also great and the local guides we met along the way were really special too. The bus journeys on the first and last days are comfortable but long, so bring podcasts to listen to as you gaze at the scenery. The roads are pretty straight though so it's possible to read (I'm not normally someone who can read in a vehicle). I stayed on afterwards in Mahdia and visited El Jem. I recommend brushing up on your French if you are going to travel independently afterwards, I've done a lot of miming :)
Great hikes in a beautiful country
This was my first MBA trip and I was so impressed with the organisation before and during the trip. The accommodations were all so different and really unusual (sleeping in a cave and camping!). The hikes were varied and challenging enough to be accessible yet with spectacular views and all the local guides, who were so knowledgeable of the areas, really brought the spirit of Tunisia alive! Ahmed, our tour guide, was the perfect host to inform and organise our day to day travel experience. His patience and care to educate the group on all aspects of life in Tunisia was fantastic. He made us all laugh and threw in some oranges as a post hike treat! Great communication from all involved at MBA.
Review of Hike in the Tunisian Desert
This trip was a holiday of a life time- The hikes were breath taking due to the views and scenery. The tour guide had such a wealth of interesting knowledge about Berber villages and the Sahara desert which he shared with us through out. The trip was extremely well organised and I loved every second.

Wow!
Wow, what a country and what a trip. This was my first MBA trip and definitely won’t be the last, hiking really is the best way to discover a place. Our guide Ahmed was fantastic, and a special thanks to Aziz our driver too. Everyone we met was so welcoming and knowledgeable.
Some sections of the trail were more technical than I expected, and the guides sometimes moved ahead quite quickly, so it’s worth being prepared for that.
I’d also recommend spending a couple of nights in Tunis or nearby, it’s well worth a visit.
Overall a fantastic experience that I will never forget!
I'll just pop feedback for
I'll just pop feedback for our guide, Ahmed, in here. He was excellent. Knowledgeable, engaging, organised, always helpful and with excellent English. A real asset to his company

Trip of a lifetime!
This was truly the trip of a lifetime. The itinerary was incredible - we visited so many amazing sites that weren't crowded with tourists, which made the whole experience feel much more personal.
Our guide, Ahmed, did a phenomenal job. He was so knowledgeable about Tunisia and consistently went above and beyond to make sure everyone in the group was comfortable and taken care of. If you want a well-run trip that genuinely lets you see the country, I highly recommend this one!

Trek in the Desert of Tunisia
Nice trekking through many different landscapes, from the white sands of the Sahara to the red canyons near Touzer to the brown rock homes of the Berbers. The group of 12 was the perfect size for dynamics and interaction. The van for travel between treks was spacious and comfortable. The guide Ahmed was very informative, caring, and attentive to all needs. Accommodations were always the best available, and usually had some very interesting features (like the ones dug from a rock). The level of exertion is properly classified as a 3.
Ahmed was excellent. We had
Ahmed was excellent. We had a blast.

My first MBA trip
This hiking tour of Tunisia was my first trip with MBA, and I would be happy to book with the company again. The tour included everything I had hoped for: scenic hikes, history lessons, unique lodgings, and enough time to relax. It is hard to find a destination where there are no other tourists on the hiking trails yet your accommodations have internet access and hot water, but Tunisia delivered on both! I felt very well taken care of during the entire trip. Ahmed was an excellent leader, keeping us organized, fed, and entertained throughout the trip. There were extra challenges completing the tour during Ramadan but Ahmed handled everything to ensure we had a similar experience to those travelling at other times of year. He is a great ambassador of his country and is the type of person Tunisia needs to help boost tourism to this beautiful place. One note is that the kit list should include rain gear; don't assume that because you are travelling in the desert you won't get wet! Overall I would recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys hiking and is interested to tour this gem of North Africa.

Fantastic Trip
This was my first MBA trip and it definitely won’t be my last, it was excellent from start to finish. The hiking was amazing with varied terrain and scenery amongst the stunning landscapes of southern Tunisia. We hiked in mountains, canyons and the highlight was hiking barefoot in the Sahara desert with the camels and our hardy camel drivers. The accommodation was full of character and really good throughout from the cave room in Douiret to our fantastic desert camp. The food was filling and plentiful and a real highlight was watching our camel drivers make the bread in the sand. I have to make a special mention for our guide Ahmed, he was brilliant and went the extra mile to make sure everyone had a great time. He was helpful, professional, friendly and an all round really good guy. Also a big thank you to our driver D’Ali who was very good at his job! Thank you MBA for a really well organised trip, I had a fantastic time with a wonderful group of like minded people.

Excellent tour guide, really well picked hikes and locations
I was so impressed by this tour as my first with MBA. I had high expectations from reading the other reviews but what I didn't expect was how well picked the accommodations were. All were clean and high quality but also really unusual and quirky, from a guesthouse carved into rock (in an abandoned Berber village) to modern tents in the desert and a really beautiful and peaceful Riad. In nearly all places, we were the only tourists there. The weather changed a lot so my best advice is to pack for all weathers. I used vest tops and thermals, sometimes in the same day!
Big shout-out to Ahmed, our tour guide. He did lots of small things to make sure our experience was what we wanted (from navigating streets, buying oranges, explaining lots of history!) I lost my wallet in the desert and he really did all he could to call people, find it and get it back to me (despite us being 3 hours away!)

Wonderful itinerary
We began in the Berber town of Douriet, abandoned in the 1990s. Arriving late at night, we could barely see the guesthouse door, but at dawn the entire town and valley magically appeared in breathtaking light — absolutely worth waking up before breakfast. With a local guide, we explored the old olive press, the mosque, and traditional dwellings carved into the landscape, imagining the town once alive. It reminded me of Matera in Italy, near my hometown. The hikes were varied and exciting: a mix of terrains including some scrambling in Zammour, walking barefoot in the desert of the Grand Erg Oriental, and navigating the canyon of Sidi Bouhlel. Other highlights included the Seven Sleepers Mosque, Ksar Hallouf, and the oasis town of Tozeur. If possible, add a day or two to make the most of being in Tunisia — I added a day in Tunis to visit the medina. I’m quite particular about food and usually rely on finding simple options myself during group tours, but Ahmed, our guide, was exceptionally committed to making sure I had meals I enjoyed — far more attentive than I’ve experienced on similar trips. The transfers on the first and last days are long (5–6 hours), but the bus is very comfortable — just bring a book or laptop. Fathi, the driver, was friendly and easygoing throughout. Overall, a beautifully designed itinerary with diverse landscapes that made every day unique and inspiring.

Amazing trip
This was my 5th MBA trip — and it definitely didn’t disappoint. I had a fantastic week with a great group of people, staying active while discovering the real Tunisia.
A big thank you to our guide, Ahmed, who was excellent throughout. He took great care of the group, made sure everything ran smoothly, and kept the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable.
A special mention as well to our driver, Fathi, who did a wonderful job and always had a warm smile.
The accommodation was full of character, the food was plentiful and very good (I’m a veggie) and the whole trip was very well organised. It offered a good balance of activities and downtime.
If you’re looking to spend a week in beautiful weather, hiking through impressive landscapes and learning more about what Tunisia has to offer, I would highly recommend this trip.

Stunning country
Great week hiking and exploring the varied scenery, with a great group of people and an excellent guide.

A proper adventure
I’m a repeat MBA traveler, and this trip ranks right up there with the best of them. As always, everything was exceptionally well organized and smoothly executed. Communication before and during the trip was clear and consistent, the staff were friendly and empathetic, and the group was full of like-minded trekkers. The itinerary offered a wonderful mix of culture, history, and hiking.
Our guide, Ahmed, was outstanding. He truly had our backs from start to finish and consistently went above and beyond to ensure we were well cared for every step of the way—all while keeping the atmosphere light and fun. A special thanks as well to our driver, Ali. Not only was he excellent at his job, but he always had a smile and was a pleasure to get to know.
I also added three days at the beginning of the trip, and that turned out to be a fantastic decision. I spent a day exploring Tunis (the Medina, Carthage, the Bardo Museum, and Sidi Bou Said), a day in Dougga—which is a must, in my opinion—and a day visiting El Jem. Houssem at MBA was incredibly helpful in arranging these extra days, and I thoroughly enjoyed touring with guides Anas and Ahmed.

Beautiful amazigh villages & desert hikes
A wonderful week in Tunisia with a friendly group, beautiful views, and lots of good food. Just the right balance of hiking and culture. Big thanks to Ahmed who did a great job and to the local guides Abdel Magid & Fathy in Douz who led us during a sandstorm!

Yalla!
This was my first MBA trip. The itinerary was well organised and the accommodation really special! The scenery was beautiful and history was fascinating. As someone who doesn't hike often (but weight trains) I found the intensity fine. The food was plentiful and delicious!
I particularly enjoyed the days spent in the Sahara desert. After experiencing the challenge of a sandstorm, we enjoyed the most beautiful clear night sky with shooting stars. We had a great group and our guide Ahmed was fun, and dedicated to our wellbeing and went the extra mile, particularly in catering for different dietary requirements in the group, ordering extra harissa(!) and organising birthday cakes! I would recommend adding some extra time to for independent travel around other parts if possible (e. g. Tunis, Carthage, El Jem, Kairouan). Make sure you take layers in the winter, as in the night, particularly in the north of the country it can get cold (I went in February).
My first MBA trip made
My first MBA trip made a positive impression. All the front end was convenient and easy to navigate and the trip itself, booked last minute, went without hitch. The tour company communicated well and the trip leader was both likeable and very capable. In terms of content the only suggestions would be to add a night at the start and finish to take in, for example, El Jem / Mahdia / Kairouan.

Great scenery and accommodation
Very relaxing, with everything organised for us. Much simpler than navigating Tunisia ourselves. Enjoyable hikes although I would have been happy if they were a little more challenging.
Ahmed put a lot of effort into making us feel comfortable and organising the trip for us, dealing with any issues that came up very well.
Lots of attention to dietary requirements appreciated, however the vegan option was sometimes much smaller. Eggs and tuna feature heavily in Tunisian food!
A fascinating and enjoyable trip
This was my first organised hiking holiday so I wasn't sure what to expect but the trip was better than I had imagined. The days were were well-filled but not pressurised, and the hikes were generally excellent but not too long or difficult for someone who is reasonably fit. I wanted them to be reasonably strenuous and they were. The variety of accommodation was interesting. We enjoyed the troglodyte rooms - cut into the cliff, being snug in the small tents out in the Sahara, and enjoying the luxurious bathroom in the riad. The trip was well-organised with special diets carefully catered for. Despite what it says in the notes, the food provided was not particularly spicy! So, overall, this was an excellent experience which I would highly recommend.

Stepping into the New Year
A great mix of accommodation and terrains for hiking. Two long transfer days but this didn’t detract from the experience. Whilst hiking is classed as moderate, it was worth noting that some elements were quite technical and your need a good for heights on a couple of the sections. Packing list was not specific enough for the cold night temperatures.

Great trip in the “real” Tunisia
The hiking was varied, from desert to dunes and canyons and a great way to see a different side to the country. Some of the travel days were longer than anticipated once rest stops were added in but the transport was comfortable and the roads good. One word of warning if travelling in the winter - it can be very cold particularly at night so layer up appropriately
A really well organised trip
A really well organised trip with activities that showcased Southern Tunisia well. Xmas night meal/wild camp in the Sahara was a standout.

A Unique Desert Hiking & Wild Camping Experience
A very different hiking trail compared to the ones I usually do. Hiking through the sand dunes and the wild camping experience were the highlights for me. The rest of the landscape and viewpoints were somewhat similar to the hikes. The guides were very helpful, and I enjoyed the trip throughout.

Great trip.
Awesome hiking and views. Accomodating leader. If booking in winter months be prepared for it to be very cold at night!!

Tips
Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion, but there is an expectation in Tunisia to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice; however, we suggest the below as a guideline, which equates to approximately €70 per person for the trip as a whole.
- Main guide: €30-35 total per person
- Camel drivers: €10 total per person, to be shared amongst the local team
- Local drivers: €15 person
- Other tips for porters and restaurant staff: €10 per person
Of course, you are free to tip more if you wish and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visas
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.
Personal Expenses
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 230kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
The tap water in Tunisia is not always gentle on the stomach. You may find purified water in some of the accommodation which you can use to fill up each morning, so be sure to pack a reusable water bottle or two. To avoid plastic waste where filtered water is not available, we suggest bringing water purification tablets or a different purification system for extra safety. Please read our article on water filters for more information.
Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamed of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.
Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 60 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures, challenging treks to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.
What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community, and the environment.
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND Tunisian cuisine is shaped by Berber roots, Arab and Ottoman influences, and Mediterranean trade, with meals often based on grains, vegetables, olive oil and spices, alongside meat and fish. Travellers with dietary requirements generally find options available, particularly vegetarian dishes, though meals can be meat based. Understanding of stricter dietary requirements is generally not widespread, however your guide can help with communication and planning.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While many traditional dishes include meat, vegetarian eating is generally manageable thanks to vegetable-based stews, salads, chickpeas and couscous that can be prepared without animal products. Fresh fruit and nuts are also plentiful. Please note that options are more straightforward in towns than rural areas, where variety and choice may be more limited.
Vegan Vegan diets can’t be catered for on this trip, due to the remote environment in which it takes place and a lack of available produce in the destination.
Kosher Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare outside of the major cities and we are therefore unable to provide for a kosher diet on this trip. The vegetarian option can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related section above.
Halal Halal diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Halal meat is widely available in Tunisia, and in practice, almost all meat served throughout the country is Halal. As a predominantly Muslim country, restaurants, hotels, and food suppliers follow Halal standards as a norm, making it easy for you to dine with confidence.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-Free diets can’t be catered for on this trip, due to the remote environment in which it takes place and a lack of available produce in the destination.
Lactose Free Lactose-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many everyday dishes are naturally dairy-free or only include small amounts of yoghurt or cheese added at the end. Substitutes such as plant milks are less common outside larger towns, so travellers should expect limited choice there.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips typically consist of a mix of solo travelers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.
It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.
Don't just take our word for it:
- 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
- 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
- 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
