    Show Day 1 detail

Meet your host at Marrakech Airport and relax for the scenic drive into the Atlas Mountains, bound for the village of Imlil. Nestled in the heart of the Toubkal Valley, Imlil is a peaceful mountain spot and where you'll find your base for the trip – the beautiful Kasbah du Toubkal. Settle in with a cup of tea on the terrace or a dip in the pool as you acclimatize to the altitude. Depending on your arrival time, head out for an optional walk around the village or a short hike on the nearby trails to stretch your legs. In the evening, gather with your fellow adventurers and local trekking guide for a welcome dinner at the Kasbah and a chat about the hiking ahead.

  2. Day 2

Begin your day with a steady climb from the Kasbah du Toubkal, heading southwest towards the small Berber village of Mazik for a glimpse of mountain life. The trail rises through terraced farmland where locals grow barley, corn, and vegetables in summer. You’ll pass walnut groves and juniper trees, with the scent of wild thyme in the air and views of surrounding peaks opening up as you gain altitude. After a few hours, reach the Tasghimout Plateau at about 8,530ft – a natural balcony over the Imlil Valley with sweeping views of the Toubkal Massif, including the snow-capped summit of Mount Toubkal on clear days. From here, follow a narrow ridge trail to the Tizi Mzik Pass (8,166ft). In spring and summer, you might see shepherds tending their flocks on the high slopes. Stop for lunch at the pass, perched above deep valleys with mountain views in all directions. The descent follows a gentler, more shaded trail looping back towards Imlil, past shepherd huts and occasional waterfalls. Re-enter the lush valley, winding through fruit orchards and stone irrigation channels, before returning to the Kasbah for a well-earned Moroccan feast in the evening.

    Day 3

Tizi Ntamataret & summit of Talamroute (8,694ft)

Set out from the Kasbah du Toubkal and begin a gradual ascent toward the Tizi Ntamatert Pass (7,477ft), climbing steadily out of the Mizane Valley. The trail winds past Berber hamlets, where traditional stone houses cling to the hillsides and mules remain the main form of transport. Continue through terraced fields and juniper and pine groves, with switchbacks revealing wide views over Imlil and the valleys beyond. From the pass, look down into the quieter Imenane Valley, then leave the main trail for a more exposed climb to the summit of Talmroute (8,694ft). The final push is steep in places but rewards you with a 360-degree panorama – on clear days you’ll see the snow-capped summit of Toubkal to the southwest and the ridgelines of the Imenane and Azzaden Valleys stretching into the distance. After a well-deserved rest at the top, descend by a different route, looping back to Imlil through rocky ridges, pine forests, and cultivated valley slopes. Back at the Kasbah, enjoy some downtime to recover from the day's efforts, followed by another blissful evening at this beautiful spot, enjoying the flavors of Morocco at dinner time.

  3. Day 4

Tidli Forest and Isk Summit (8,268ft)

    Show Day 4 detail

On your final day in the High Atlas, set out from the Kasbah for a loop through the lush Tidli Forest to the summit of Isk. The trail winds through pine and juniper woodland along quieter paths, with a real sense of solitude. As you climb, the trees thin, opening views across the Mizane Valley. You’ll gain height steadily, passing grazing pastures and shepherd shelters, before reaching the Isk summit – a peaceful spot perched at 8,268ft, with panoramic views of Mount Toubkal and its surrounding peaks. After a break, descend back into the forest and continue towards Aroumd, the largest and one of the oldest Berber villages in the Imlil region. Built on a rocky outcrop, its traditional stone houses are stacked into the hillside. From here, follow a gentle path through the valley to the Kasbah, arriving mid to late afternoon. With the hike complete, there’s time to freshen up and relax before gathering for a farewell dinner – one last evening of Berber hospitality, with the mountains as your backdrop.

  4. Day 5

    Farewell to the kasbah

Stay

Standout Stay: Berber comfort in the High Atlas

Your base and Standout Stay for this adventure is the Kasbah du Toubkal – a beautifully restored mountain retreat (opens in new tab) perched high above the village of Imlil, with jaw-dropping views of the surrounding peaks. Often described as the most unique and sustainable lodge in the Atlas Mountains, it combines traditional Berber hospitality with thoughtful touches of comfort and luxury. Rooms are warm, inviting and full of character, with handwoven rugs, carved wooden details, and cozy beds to sink into after a day on the trails. There’s a peaceful roof terrace for stargazing or mint tea at sunset, a traditional hammam to soothe tired legs, and a relaxed communal atmosphere that makes you feel at home during your time in the High Atlas. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with private bathrooms (unless you've booked a private room upgrade).

A stay at the Kasbah du Toubkal also benefits the local community: the kasbah is run in partnership with the villagers of Imlil and reinvests in local education and sustainability projects. See the FAQs for more details.

Each day starts and ends at the Kasbah du Toubkal, where you’ll enjoy carefully prepared breakfasts and dinners in one of the most impressive dining settings in the Atlas Mountains. You’ll stop for Moroccan-style picnics with beautifully prepared spreads of grilled meats, olives, salads, local cheeses, and sweet treats, all paired with freshly brewed mint tea. Trip level explained

Level 4

Moderate-Challenging

This trek involves three consecutive days of 6–8 hours of hiking on mountain trails, with steady ascents and descents of 2,600–3,900ft each day, so you'll need a level of endurance. The routes are non-technical, though some sections are steep, rocky or uneven, requiring good balance and stamina. You’ll be hiking at between 5,600–8,700ft, where altitude can make moderate terrain feel more challenging. Expect a mix of rocky paths, forest tracks and terraced farmland, with some exposed ridges and passes. Conditions range from strong daytime sun to cooler nights, so layering is recommended.

Is this trip for me?

This trip is best suited to hikers with a moderate level of fitness and a sense of adventure. You should be comfortable walking 6–8 hours a day with up to 3,900ft of ascent and descent over multiple days. Previous hillwalking or hiking experience is recommended, but no technical climbing skills are required. Some walks in hilly terrain in the lead up to the trip will help you feel prepared for the elevation involved. You should be ready for remote mountain trails, variable weather, and some sustained physical effort. Each of the daily hikes are loops from the Kasbah, so it is possible to skip or shorten a day if you prefer to rest or explore Imlil at a gentler pace.

What if i need to skip an activity?

You are welcome to skip any of the hikes on this trip and relax at the kasbah if you don't feel up to it on any given day.

What will I need to carry?

You'll just need to carry a daypack with your personal items such as a cell phone, camera, waterproofs, and water bottle. A muleteer and chef accompany the group on the hikes to transport the supplies for each lunch while out on the hikes.

High altitude (over 8,200 ft): factors to consider

This trip visits locations at or above 8,200ft, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group well-being, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatize can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

A well organised trip from start to finish. Staying in the Kasbah du Toubkal with a small group of people from diverse backgrounds. We became part of the local community through interaction with the employees of the Kasbah and learnt a lot about the history of the locality. Set in the stunning scenery of the High Atlas the Kasbah made a good base from which to explore the mountains in the capable hands or our local guides.

This was my third MBA trip and as usual the quality of the trip was exceptional. The hiking over 4 consecutive days was spectacular. The trails wind through rocky mountain paths, passing streams and waterfalls, with incredible views at almost every turn. Each daily hike had different and varied terrain. The guides were excellent, ensuring our safety and paced each hike well. We stayed in a local Kasbah, with its traditional and rustic feel and terraces that looked out over the valley and the surrounding mountains. After a day of hiking, it was the perfect place to relax with a glass of mint tea while watching the sunset over the Atlas peaks. The hospitality was outstanding - Mike, the guides and the wider Kasbah team were all incredibly welcoming - the traditional food was well received before, during and after our hikes. Another great trip with a fabulous group of people creating many lasting memories.

This was my first trip with Much Better Adventures and the first trip I’ve done by myself and I am really keen to do more. We had beautiful weather in February - it felt warm in the sun but it wasn’t overly hot and cooled down quickly at night. The snow on the mountains was beautiful. Loved the Kasbah which had panoramic views in all directions. The food is traditional Moroccan and was all very good, especially the tagines in the evening. Mike, our host, was very welcoming and kept us well entertained. We were a group of 8 people and all got on really well. The walks were excellent - I was tired by the end of each day but not exhausted. Each of the three days had quite different scenery and views and we came across very few other people on the first and last days. Our guides were lovely and the picnic lunches were way above my expectations. We were there in Ramadan and it wasn’t an issue for us as visitors. Just not sure how the guides managed the walks with no water!

Wonderful location for High Atlas hikes. The atmosphere in the kasbah is rustic and relaxing, the staff warm and welcoming, the food delicious, the host makes sure you have everything you need. The guides were very friendly and supporting, and the trails manageable - especially with nice Moroccan lunch picnics as fuel. Best of all: very nice group vibe, making every hike even more enjoyable! Recommended trip.

I can't say enough about everyone and everything. The staff. The guides. The mountains. The Kasba. The village. The people. Everything was perfect.

I just can’t say enough about this wonderful trip. Every detail was extraordinary, beginning with the airport pickup and drive with Rashid up the winding mountain hills to Imlil. A muleteer meets you at the office to carry your bags up the ascent through the village paths to the Kasbah du Toubkal, an exquisite lodge. Our room was at the top of the tower with epic Mountain View’s in every direction. The Kasbah is truly a special place with a fascinating story and a deep involvement in the local community. We really enjoyed meeting Mike, all of the friendly staff, and the truly enjoyable group of travelers on our tour. The hospitality was above and beyond, equaling the beauty of the setting. The feasts for every meal (including on the trail!), the delicious mint tea (“Berber whiskey”), the hammam… And the hikes! Gorgeous! Our guides, Ibrahim and Abdul, were fantastic — leading with skill, patience, knowledge, and humor even while fasting for Ramadan. We had an unforgettable experience and would highly recommend this trip.

FAQs

A 5% community levy is included in every bill at the Kasbah du Toubkal, whether you visit independently or on a group trip like this one. Funds from this levy go directly to local projects through the Association des Bassins d’Imlil and the charity Education For All. Your contribution supports vital initiatives such as a local ambulance service, waste management, a public hammam and boarding facilities for girls from remote villages, so they can attend school.

This 5% levy is an integral part of the kasbah's sustainable tourism model. It has helped fund infrastructure and community development across the Imlil Valley since the kasbah opened in the mid‑1990s, anchoring its long-standing commitment to benefit the local Berber community. The levy is included in the price you pay to book the trip through Much Better Adventures – there’s nothing extra to pay on arrival.

Your host for this trip is the Kasbah du Toubkal itself, along with its team of experienced hiking guides. They know this part of the Atlas Mountains inside out and can adapt the route if needed due to unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather.

Depending on the group size of the trip, you will have one or two main trekking guides, plus a muleteer and a cook will join the group on each hike to transport supplies for the group to enjoy some sumptuous and memorable picnic-style Moroccan lunches.

Your base is at the Kasbah du Toubkal for the duration, so you can leave your luggage in your room throughout the trip.

The tap water in Morocco is not safe to consume. The kasbah has a courtyard filter station providing safe drinking water to guests; you can fill up your water bottle or bladder here ahead of each day of hiking. Plastic bottled water is not provided as part of the kasbah's sustainability policy.

Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours, and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day, and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

As Ramadan follows the lunar calendar, the dates change from year to year. We recommend checking whether your chosen trip dates fall during this period.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND Food in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains is shaped by Amazigh (Berber) traditions and historic trade routes, giving it a distinctive mix of sweet and savoury flavours, with staples like tajines and couscous, often spiced with cumin, turmeric and ginger.

Vegan-friendly options include vegetable tajines cooked with olive oil, lentil and bean dishes (such as loubia or bissara), roasted seasonal vegetables, simple tomato-and-cucumber salads, and mezze-style plates of olives, salads and dips such as zaalouk and taktouka made without butter. It’s worth noting that bread, pastries and couscous can sometimes include butter, milk or eggs, so it helps to flag this clearly to your guide and host.

Kosher Fully certified kosher options are limited in Morocco and are mainly found in larger cities such as Casablanca and Marrakech. On this trip, kosher-supervised kitchens and ingredients are not available, so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.

Halal Halal diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is made aware in advance. As Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country, most local restaurants, hotels and suppliers prepare food in line with halal norms.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options may be more limited compared to those without dietary requirements. While your local hosts will do their best, it’s worth knowing that gluten-free supplies are generally only available in the major cities. In more remote areas, it's harder to source specialist products, so meals will be based on naturally gluten-free dishes rather than substitutes. That said, most standard meals already include several options without gluten, even without special preparation. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose Free Lactose-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as vegetable dishes, couscous, legumes, salads, and mezze based on olive oil rather than yogurt or cheese.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy (including Coeliac disease), please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.

*Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

January to February is winter in the mountains. Days are crisp and cool, perfect for hiking – with average daytime temperatures around 50°F, dropping to freezing at night. Snow dusts the higher peaks, adding a dramatic backdrop to your views, while the trails around Imlil remain accessible and uncrowded.

July to August brings warm, sunny days and cooler mountain air – a welcome escape from the Moroccan heat. Expect daytime highs around 77°F, with lower humidity and comfortable evenings. It’s the ideal season for long hikes and relaxed terrace dinners under starry skies.

November to December sees the return of cooler temperatures, with daytime averages of 50–59°F and chilly nights. Autumn colors linger in the valleys and the snow line begins to creep down from the peaks, making for atmospheric trekking conditions.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 42kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
