Fáilte go hÉirinn, welcome to Ireland. Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Dublin, setting off in the morning and leaving the city behind as the landscape opens up around you. Break for a stretch and a cup of tea or coffee before continuing towards Cork, where the city's famous English Market makes a fitting first stop. Wander between stalls piled high with Irish produce, browse the family-run counters that have been trading here for generations, and perhaps duck into a traditional pub for a taste of Cork life. Then it's onwards, following the road west towards the Wild Atlantic Way and your hotel in West Cork. Come evening, get to know your fellow travelers over a welcome dinner before heading out to the coast as the sun sets over the Atlantic.

As night falls, swap the trail for a kayak and head out onto a unique saltwater lake in search of bioluminescence. There’s no guarantee of a glowing display, but paddling across tranquil water by moonlight, with a close watch for bats and other wildlife moving beneath the stars, is pretty magical in itself.

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

This trip starts and ends in Dublin city center, giving you the flexibility to spend more time in the capital if you'd like, or head home soon after the trip if you’re short on time. If you’d like to extend your stay, your host can help arrange a hotel in Dublin (see Optional Extras). Your exact meeting point will be confirmed before departure, but it will be somewhere on Merrion Square, in the south of the city.

On Day 7, you’ll return to Dublin for a walking tour hosted by a social enterprise that trains people who have previously experienced homelessness as city guides. You’ll arrive in downtown by 12:30 PM, with time to get lunch before the afternoon tour. If you need to skip the walking tour to catch an earlier flight, that’s absolutely fine. We recommend booking flights no earlier than 5:00 PM to allow plenty of time to get to the airport and check in.

Getting between downtown Dublin and the airport is straightforward. Frequent express buses cost around €10 and take €20–30 minutes, while public buses cost around €3 and take 45–60 minutes. Taxis are also readily available, costing around €25–35 and taking 15–30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Travel options

There are direct flights to Dublin from many major cities and travel hubs across the UK, Europe, North America, and the Middle East.

For US travelers: when flying home, you can use U.S. Preclearance at Dublin Airport before boarding your flight. This means completing U.S. immigration, customs, and agriculture checks in Ireland, so you can arrive in the U.S. as a domestic passenger and save time on arrival. Simply drop your bags, pass through standard airport security, then follow the signs to the U.S. Preclearance area, operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, to complete your checks before boarding.

Trip level explained

Level 1

Easy

This trip is ideal for first-time visitors to Ireland who want to experience a mix of iconic highlights and lesser-known regions, while balancing active days with plenty of time to relax. From Killarney National Park, the Ring of Kerry and the Cliffs of Moher to seaweed baths and a Wild Irish Kitchen experience, this trip brings together the nature, culture and character of the Emerald Isle.

You’ll hike, cycle and kayak across Ireland, with all activities suitable for beginners. The only requirements are that you’re able to swim and ride a bike. Hikes range from 2–5 miles, the bike ride is 9 miles, and you’ll spend around two hours kayaking on open water. Overall, the activities are manageable for anyone who’s comfortable being active for 2–3 hours at a time.

With two nights in each location, the trip strikes a balance between adventure and relaxation. Alongside active days, there’s time to unwind with experiences such as seaweed baths and saunas, as well as time to make the most of the premium hotels you’ll stay in along the way.

What if i need to skip an activity?

On days that start and finish at the same hotel, you’re welcome to skip the activities and spend the day relaxing at your lodging instead. On travel days, your guide will do their best to suggest alternative activities if you’d rather sit one out, but please bear in mind that the rugged, semi-remote landscapes mean alternatives won’t always be practical or comfortable.

What will I need to carry?

You’ll need a small daypack to carry personal items during hikes and daily activities. Your main luggage should be a soft duffel bag or suitcase, which will be transported for you throughout the trip by vehicle.

Food and Dietary info

Irish cuisine is all about hearty, comforting dishes made with fresh Atlantic seafood, grass-fed beef and lamb, and high-quality dairy. Staples include Irish stew, fish and chips, seafood chowder and potato-heavy sides such as colcannon. You’ll often find soda bread served alongside a cooked breakfast at hotels – a yeast-free loaf made with whole wheat flour and buttermilk, giving it a subtly nutty flavor and a mild tang. You’ll also get the chance to try wild Irish seaweed along the way.

Ireland is equally famous for its drinks. Irish whiskey, often triple-distilled for smoothness, ranges from familiar names such as Jameson to premium single malts. Guinness, the iconic dry stout from Dublin, is known for its creamy texture and roasted flavor, while other favorites include Baileys Irish Cream, Irish coffee and craft beers. Most of these will be available at hotel bars, so there’ll be plenty of opportunities to try them if you fancy it.

If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances or allergies, please check the FAQ below, ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’, for specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may be used to at home can vary between destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before booking to make sure this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.

FAQs

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Irish food traditions grew from a farming and coastal heritage, with a temperate, wet climate favoring dairy, potatoes, root vegetables, and grass-fed meat and seafood, resulting in meals that are generally hearty, simple, and comforting rather than heavily spiced. Dietary requirements are usually well accommodated, as Ireland has a strong culture of hospitality and most kitchens are experienced with vegetarian, gluten-free, and other common needs, particularly in towns and along popular routes. In more remote rural areas, choice can be narrower, so it helps to flag specific requirements in advance. Throughout, your guide will help communicate needs and find suitable options at each stop.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Vegan
Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Kosher
Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal
Certified Halal supply varies by location and may not always be possible. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten-free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below)
Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Lactose-free
Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens (opens in new tab) identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

The tap water is safe to consume throughout the itinerary, so we strongly encourage you to bring one or two reusable water bottles that you can refill each morning before heading out for activities.

Throughout the trip, all major logistics, including transfers, activities, and lodging, are arranged for you and managed by your local guide. Occasionally, for reasons beyond your guide’s control, some activities may not be possible in their planned format. The weather in Ireland can be wild and unpredictable, and this is the most common reason for changes. Your guide will always do their best to provide suitable alternatives.

There will be a ratio of 1 guide to every 8 guests throughout the itinerary, with local specialist activity guides joining for certain experiences.

The cycling will take place on standard touring bikes. You are welcome to bring cycling shorts to make your adventure more comfortable.

The bioluminescence kayaking trip begins just before nightfall, giving you the chance to watch the sunset over the water before darkness sets in and brings the best conditions for spotting bioluminescence. Full waterproof clothing and shoe coverings are provided, along with a life jacket, paddle and kayak, so there’s no need to bring anything for this activity. Bioluminescence is the natural production and emission of light by a living organism. It occurs when a light-emitting molecule called luciferin reacts with oxygen, aided by an enzyme called luciferase. It can never be guaranteed, but is visible on around 90% of evenings.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

This trip has departures between April and September, when the weather is generally at its finest. Having said that, no season in Ireland is guaranteed to be rain- or wind-free, so it’s best to come prepared for a bit of everything.

In late spring (Apr–May), expect highs of 59°F and lows of 45°F, with light showers throughout.

During the summer months (Jun–Aug), temperatures typically reach highs of 66°F and lows of 57°F. While there’s less rain during this time, light showers are still common, alongside plenty of long, sunny days.

In September, temperatures typically range from 54°F to 63°F, with a handful of drizzly days.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 203kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
