Itinerary
Day 1
Board your Turkish gulet
Boat Journey2hrsSnorkelling1hrBoatTwin shareLunch and dinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Welcome to the Maldives! Board Felicity straight from Male Airport and settle into your cabin before setting sail into the North Male Atoll. As you cruise through turquoise channels between low-lying islands, keep an eye on the horizon for your first glimpses of the sun-soaked Maldivian islands. By afternoon, you'll anchor near Eriyadu, ready for an acclimatization snorkel, a gentle first dip to get used to your mask, fins and the warm, current-swept water you'll encounter here. It's a soft start to the week, but even on this short swim, you'll get a sense of what's ahead, with coral gardens crowded with reef fish just feet from the hull. Dinner is served onboard as the sun goes down over your first Maldivian atoll.
Day 2
Learn how seagrass supports the reef
Snorkelling2hrsBoat Journey4hrsWalking Tour1-2hrBoatTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Start the day with a pre-breakfast snorkel before Felicity gets underway for the cruise toward Goidhoo Atoll. There's time on deck to relax as your tour leader talks you through the seagrass meadows and mangrove forests that anchor this ecosystem – nurseries for the young fish, turtles, and rays you'll spot throughout the week, as well as natural defenses against coastal erosion. In the afternoon, you'll snorkel a seagrass bed, watching for grazing turtles among the swaying grass, before heading ashore to Goidhoo Island itself. Wander alongside its mangroves and get a feel for daily life on one of the Maldives' quieter, less-visited islands. Expect parrotfish, angelfish, and moray eels on today's swims, with the chance of spotting eagle rays and blacktip reef sharks further out.
Day 3
Visit a reef restoration project
Snorkelling2hrsConservation Visit1–2hrsBoat Journey1hrBoatTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Today brings one of the week's standout swims: a giant coral snorkel among some of the largest coral formations in the atoll, home to a dense mix of reef fish and the occasional reef shark cruising past. After the swim, Felicity cruises on to Fulhadhoo, a quieter, more remote island with a strong community focus on protecting its surrounding reef. In the afternoon, you'll visit the island and snorkel at the Fulhadhoo Coral Reef Rehabilitation Project, one of the reef sites restored through Save the Beach Maldives' Reef Stars initiative, which Much Better Adventures supports through our Host Impact Fund. Your tour leader will explain the techniques being used and why coral resilience matters here more than almost anywhere else: the Maldives sits barely 3 feet above sea level, and its reefs are both a vital marine habitat and a natural flood defense.
Day 4
Give back with an island beach cleanup
Snorkelling2hrsBoatTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
There's no long-distance cruising today, so you'll get two full snorkel sessions on either side of a visit to one of the Maldives' uninhabited islands. Fulhadhoo's surrounding reef is home to a busy mix of groupers, snapper, and surgeonfish, with octopus and reef squid often tucked into the coral by day, so keep an eye on the smaller crevices as well as the open water. After the morning swim, you'll head ashore for a beach clean—a hands-on chance to help clear the marine debris that washes up on even the most remote islands here, from fishing rope to plastic carried across the Indian Ocean. It's a small but tangible way to give something back to the places you're visiting. In the afternoon, your tour leader will select a different reef for your second snorkel of the day.
Day 5
Cruise to Baa Atoll and visit a turtle rescue center
Snorkelling1hrBoat Journey2–3hrsConservation Visit1–2hrsBoatTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Another pre-breakfast snorkel starts the day before Felicity sets off on the cruise to South Baa Atoll, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Later, you'll visit the Olive Ridley Project's Turtle Rescue Center at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, where injured and sick sea turtles are rehabilitated before being released. It's a rare chance to see marine conservation work up close and learn about the specific threats facing hawksbill and green turtles in Maldivian waters, from ghost nets to coastal development. The center's work connects directly to what you've already seen in the water this week, giving you useful context for spotting and identifying turtles on your remaining snorkels.
Day 6
Snorkel with turtles, then relax on a sandbar
Snorkelling2hrsBoat Journey1hrBoatTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
This morning's snorkel has a focus: turtle identification. Your tour leader will show you how researchers use the unique markings on a turtle's face to identify individuals and track them over the years, adding a layer of purpose to every sighting. Baa Atoll's reefs are known for regular turtle encounters, so keep your eyes peeled. In the afternoon, after a second snorkel session, Felicity drops anchor beside a sandbank: a strip of pure white sand rising out of the open ocean with nothing else in sight. It's the kind of spot you can only reach on a liveaboard trip like this one, ideal for swimming, floating and taking in views that stretch uninterrupted to the horizon.
Day 7
One last snorkel, then enjoy ice cream on the beach
Snorkelling1hrBoat Journey6hrsBoatTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 7 detailHide detail
Make the most of your last morning in the water with a final snorkel before Felicity begins the six-hour cruise back towards Hulhumale. It's the longest crossing of the trip, so expect a relaxed afternoon on deck, watching the atolls slip past for the last time. Once you reach Hulhumale Lagoon, you'll go ashore to stretch your legs and explore a very different side of the Maldives: a modern, reclaimed island with cafes, shops and an urban energy that contrasts sharply with the remote atolls you've spent the week exploring. The day ends with locally made Maldivian ice cream on the beach – a low-key but fitting way to toast the end of the adventure with the rest of the group before returning to Felicity in port for a traditional Maldivian dinner and a final night onboard.
Day 8
Farewell breakfast before your transfer to the airport
Breakfast includedShow Day 8 detailHide detail
After a final breakfast onboard, it's time to say goodbye to the crew and your fellow guests as you're transferred back to the airport for your onward flight. You'll leave the vessel at 8:30 AM and arrive at the airport around 9:00 AM. It's a gentle end to a week spent moving slowly between some of the Maldives' most remote reefs, atolls, and islands.

A 10% service charge is included in the trip cost. Under Maldivian law, this is distributed equally between all employees involved in running the trip. If you'd like to offer your tour leader, boat captain and crew an additional tip, the amount should reflect your perception of the service and quality. As a guideline, we suggest budgeting USD 10–20 per guest per day. The tour leader will direct you to a cash tip box on the final day of the trip.
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional food and drinks, shopping and laundry. Alcohol is available to purchase on board with cash payment (USD).
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate coverage for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and gear, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment coverage, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer coverage for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

FAQs
What makes a Much Better Adventures wildlife trip unique?
Our wildlife adventures put nature front and center throughout. You'll spend as much time as possible immersed in wild landscapes—tracking animals, sitting quietly, and waiting for something remarkable to happen. That said, these are still proper adventures: expect hiking, walking safaris, and active days, with moments of stillness and observation woven in along the way. An experienced naturalist tour leader will be with you throughout, and groups are intentionally small to keep things intimate, minimize the trip's environmental impact, and ensure the wildlife barely knows you're there.
What measures are in place to keep wildlife encounters responsible?
Our adventures are designed by animal lovers, for animal lovers, with a strong focus on respect and minimal impact during all wildlife encounters. You’ll be accompanied by experienced local wildlife experts who follow strict guidelines to ensure animals are never disturbed. Group sizes are limited to a maximum of 12, helping to minimize disturbance and allowing wildlife sightings to be handled calmly and responsibly. All trips operate in line with our Animal Welfare Policy (opens in new tab), ensuring wildlife protection always comes first.
Isn't swimming with whale sharks affected by overtourism?
Some parts of the Maldives, particularly South Ari Atoll, see heavy visitor numbers around whale shark sightings, with dozens of boats sometimes converging on a single animal. This trip deliberately avoids South Ari Atoll for that reason. Instead, you'll spend your time in Goidhoo and Baa Atoll, where encounters are less frequent but far less crowded and monitored under the guidelines of the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. While this means there's a lower chance of a sighting, any encounter will be a more authentic, lower-impact experience. You'll also benefit from a week spent exploring a much wider stretch of ocean rather than one busy hotspot.
What's the likelihood of seeing whale sharks and manta rays on this trip?
Manta rays are seen year-round at Goidhoo Atoll, so there's a chance of a sighting on any departure. Whale sharks and manta rays are most commonly encountered in Baa Atoll between May and November, with the most sightings in July and August. Outside this window, encounters in Baa Atoll are less likely, though Goidhoo remains a possibility throughout the year.
It's worth bearing in mind that this trip is designed around exploring a whole marine ecosystem rather than chasing one or two headline species. You'll spend the week snorkeling reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves that are home to turtles, reef sharks, eagle rays, and hundreds of smaller reef fish, so there's plenty to see even without encountering a manta or whale shark. As with any wildlife sighting, nothing can be guaranteed, and your tour leader will always prioritize the animals' welfare over getting close for a better view.
How does Much Better Adventures support Maldivian coral reefs?
We are proud to support coral reef restoration in the Maldives through our Host Impact Fund, with a donation to Save the Beach Maldives' Reef Star project. Save the Beach Maldives has been running Reef Star builds and restoration efforts since 2020 and partnered with the SHEBA brand in 2024 to expand community-based reef restoration across the country. Working alongside local communities, marine biologists, and volunteers, the project installs Reef Stars—structures used to regrow coral—on degraded reefs around the Maldives. You'll see this work firsthand on Day 3, when you visit the Fulhadhoo Coral Reef Rehabilitation Project, one of the reef sites restored through this initiative. As an island and coral nation on the frontline of climate change, the Maldives depends heavily on healthy reefs, making this restoration work especially important.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You should be comfortable and confident in the water. Life jackets and buoyancy aids are provided, and your guide and crew will monitor safety throughout swimming and snorkeling sessions. The Maldives can experience strong currents even on calm days, so you must be able to swim unaided. The trip doesn't include any diving, so no scuba certification is required.
What can I do during downtime on board?
During longer journeys between islands and atolls, the sundeck is the natural gathering point, whether you're stretched out with a book, watching the atolls slip past, or swapping stories with your fellow travelers. Your tour leader is often close by, happy to talk through the marine life you've spotted that day or what's coming up on the itinerary. Some guests use the quieter stretches to nap before the next snorkel; others simply enjoy the pace of a week with nowhere specific to be.
What if things don't go as planned?
The Maldives has a tropical climate, and while conditions are carefully monitored throughout the cruise, sea conditions can occasionally require changes to the planned itinerary. The captain makes daily decisions based on wind, waves, and visibility, and activities may be moved, rescheduled, or replaced if needed. If conditions affect a planned snorkel, an alternative reef or lagoon will be selected, and educational sessions can be adapted to suit. Your safety and comfort always come first.
What makes this Maldives conservation cruise particularly good value?
Most Maldives liveaboards keep prices lower by cutting back on vessel size, cabin comfort, crew numbers, or what's included in the fare. Here are a few ways this cruise compares with trips that might look similar at first glance.
Vessel: MY Felicity is a traditional Turkish gulet, fully air-conditioned throughout. Many similar trips use a smaller dhoni instead, with some operating with fans only and no air-conditioning.
Crew: A maximum of 12 guests are supported by a crew of eight: one tour leader, one captain, and six crew. Other operators typically accommodate a similar or larger group with a smaller crew of around five.
Cabins: All six cabins aboard MY Felicity are en suite with hot and cold water, in a mix of twin, double, and double-with-upper-bunk configurations. Other dhoni cruises often have smaller, more compact cabins, and on some, not every cabin is en suite.
Inclusions: This cruise includes all meals, all transfers, all local taxes, including the Maldives Green Tax, and snorkeling equipment.
Responsible travel: This trip supports coral reef restoration through Save the Beach Maldives' Reef Star project, as well as the important work of the Olive Ridley Project through a visit to its Turtle Rescue Center. You'll also take part in a beach clean, giving you a direct way to have a positive impact on the places you visit.
Fees included: The Maldives Green Tax (USD 12 per person, per day) and a 10% service charge, shared among the crew, are both included in the fare.
What do I do about drinking water?
Tap water is fine for brushing your teeth, but it isn't safe to drink. A water station is available onboard, so please bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the trip.
Can my dietary requirements be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Maldivian food reflects its setting among Indian Ocean atolls, where a warm climate, limited arable land, and centuries of trade with South Asia and Arabia have shaped a diet built around fish, rice, coconut, and spice, with tuna a near-daily staple. Islam also heavily influences food culture, so pork and alcohol are absent in local settings, although alcohol is available on board the boat. Beef and seafood (aside from fish) are not served on board due to environmental concerns. Fruit and vegetables, while available, are not abundant and given that fish is a key component of the local diet, you will find a vegetarian or vegan diet quite repetitive. Travelers with such needs should plan ahead and bring supplementary snacks for more variety during your trip.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive.
Vegan

Kosher
Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
Halal
The Maldives is a Muslim country, so halal diets can easily be catered for, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten-free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below)
Gluten-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. Please consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Lactose-free
Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team before booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.
This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

What's the weather like?
The Maldives has a tropical climate, plenty of sunshine, and temperatures around 86°F throughout the year, so there's never really a bad time to visit from a weather perspective. There are two distinct seasons: the dry season (northeast monsoon) from January to March and the wet season (southwest monsoon) from mid-May to November. 'Wet season' doesn't mean it rains all the time, but there is more rainfall during this period than in the dry season. You may get a heavy shower most days, but it's very rare to have days and days of rain in succession or even rain lasting a full 24 hours. There is usually more wind during this season, but this helps keep temperatures at a pleasant level, and you can still expect plenty of blue skies and sunshine.
Like many places around the world, the climate and weather patterns are changing, and historical data is becoming less reliable as an indication of what to expect. As the islands are situated so close to the equator, it's possible to get sunburned even on a cloudy day, so sunscreen should be applied as a matter of course.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 800kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
