Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Norway!
HotelTwin shareShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Join the group transfer from Bergen Airport and get to know your fellow travelers, or make your own way to Voss. Check into your hotel, meeting for a welcome briefing in the hotel lobby at approximately 4:30 PM. Spend the rest of your evening exploring, grabbing some dinner with your crew and getting a good night's sleep before the adventure begins in the morning.
Day 2
Time to hit the water
Kayaking4-5hrs · 8miWild campingTwin or single tentAll meals includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Check out of the hotel and head to your host's kayaking base in Gudvangen – situated in the innermost part of the Nærøyfjord. After a safety briefing and paddling instruction session, you'll pack your drybags into the kayaks and set off, carrying everything you need for the next couple of days. The Nærøyfjord is an idyllic spot with typically calm waters and waterfalls cascading from the fjord's 3,281 ft+ walls. You'll set up camp on the shore of the Nærøyfjord in the afternoon; enjoy a glass of wine and dinner prepared by the guide as the sun sets, helping to build the campfire if you fancy it.
Day 3
Bird's-eye view hiking
Hiking7-10 hours · 12mi · 3937ft up · 3937ft downWild campingTwin or single tentAll meals includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Leaving your campsite and kayaks behind, you'll strap on your daypack for a hike to the highlands above Nærøyfjord, all the way to the top of one of the fjord's towering peaks. From the summit, you'll be rewarded with magnificent views of the water-filled channel cutting its way through the mountainous landscape. You'll return to your campsite for dinner and a second night of counting shooting stars.
Day 4
Kayak into the Aurlandsfjord
Kayaking3-4hrs · 6miCabinMulti shareAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Load up your kayak, get back on the water and continue to paddle through the Nærøyfjord. The cold, clean waters are a wildlife haven – keep your eyes peeled for seals and with luck, you may even encounter some niser, a local species of harbor porpoise. Next, you'll pass the towering headland of Beitelen, forming a natural divide between the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord. Your take-out point is a couple of miles before Undredal. You'll have a steep forty-five-minute hike up to your accommodation at Stigen Farm, which overlooks the Aurlandsfjord from its spectacular mountain shelf some 1,181 ft above sea level. Check into your room before tucking into a fresh, farm-to-table style dinner.
Day 5
Paddle to Fresvik
Kayaking3-4hrs · 11miHiking1hr · 1mi · 1181ft downGuesthouseMulti shareAll meals includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Start today paddling north toward the main channel of the Sognefjord, stopping for a picnic lunch before heading into the scenic bay of Fresvik in the late afternoon. Settle in at your guesthouse here, and perhaps take a jump in the fjord followed by a well-deserved soak in the wood-fired hot tubs set on the wharf. Tuck into a home-cooked dinner, made using ingredients grown and sourced from the village.
Day 6
To Bøverdalen Valley
Hiking1-2hrs (optional)Driving3hrsHotelTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
This morning, take a walk around the picturesque fjordside village of Fresvik or a hike up the overlooking hillsides (optional). In the afternoon, hop in the van for a breathtaking drive up to the Jotunheimen mountain range further north, complete with a ferry crossing over the main Sognefjord. Arrive in Elveseter in the Bøverdalen Valley in the late afternoon and get some rest before your summit attempt tomorrow.

To the top!

Setting off early, you’ll start the hike to the 8,100 ft summit of the majestic Galdhøpiggen (a 7-hour round trip). Snow-covered year-round, the trail begins by crossing the Styggebreen Glacier – you'll be provided with crampons and ropes to tackle this section. You’ll then push on to the summit, soak up that ‘top of the world’ feeling and bask in the incredible views below.
Day 8
Glacier go-go
Hiking3hrs · 1mi · 492ft up · 492ft downHotelTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 8 detailHide detail
Today you'll hike through the glaciers of Jostedalsbreen National Park, home to some of Europe's largest ice caps. At the Nigardsbreen Glacier, one of the park's most dramatic glacial tongues, you'll transfer by small boat to the glacier's snout. After a briefing by the glacier guide, you'll strap on your crampons and set out on an unforgettable hike to see fantastically shaped pinnacles, tunnels and frozen waterfalls. After exploring this epic glacial landscape, you'll then be driven to Voss and spend a final evening celebrating your ultimate adventure with your crew.

What's not included

Tips are not included in the trip cost; these are entirely at your discretion. If you would like to tip, the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality.
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

FAQs
What are the Norwegian Fjords?
One of the most beautiful places in the world. A fjord is a deep, narrow, and elongated part of the sea that stretches inland for miles, winding around mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs. The fjords were formed by the giant glacier tongues and shaped over several ice ages.
What kind of kayaks are used on this trip?
Most groups will have a mix of single and double kayaks. If you’d prefer a single, let your host know in advance, and they’ll do their best to make it happen, but it can’t be guaranteed. They need to balance kayak-to-guide safety ratios and juggle the fleet across multiple groups. If you start out in a double and fancy trying a single (or vice versa), have a chat with your fellow adventurers, someone might be up for a swap during the trip. If you're unsure about your paddling strength or confidence, sharing a double with a stronger member of the group can be a great idea.
How do I pack for this and can I store my luggage somewhere?
You're free to bring any luggage or suitcase you wish with you but if you can pack light it'll make life easier with the various luggage transfers. During the tour, your main luggage will be transported between accommodation by bus so you'll have overnight access to it throughout, except for the kayaking section (Days 3, 4 and 5).
At the kayaking base in Gudvangen on Day 3, you'll be provided with a 22-liter dry bag to pack everything that you will need with you for the next three nights (you will also be given a hard, waterproof case for your camera/phone). You'll need to pack light as your dry bag has to fit into the hatched compartments (bulkheads) of the kayak, along with the group's food and equipment which will be shared among the kayaks. The remainder of your luggage can be left behind and securely stored at the kayaking base in Gudvangen, and will be transferred to your accommodation in Fresvik and reunited with you on Day 6.
Don't stress, your host will explain all during the briefing.
Can you recommend accommodation in Voss or Bergen before or after the tour?
We can recommend the following from budget to high price. There are many other hotels however these are selected for their convenience and / or from experience:
Accommodation in Voss
- Voss Hostel - great prices for individuals, couples or large groups.
- Voss Camping Cabins - ideal for small groups of 3 to 4.
- Park Hotel Voss - modern hotel overlooking the fjord.
- Fleischer's Hotel - historic hotel close to the train station with a wellness center.
Accommodation in Bergen
- Montana Hostel - great prices for individuals, couples or large groups.
- Grand Terminus Hotel - Older style but right next to the train station.
- Thon Bristol Hotel - great central city location for sightseeing and nightlife.
- First Marin Hotel - great central city location for sightseeing and nightlife.
I'm thinking of bringing a drone, is this allowed?
Here’s what your local guide has to say on Drones:
We do not really encourage bringing drones on this trip for several reasons:
- There are limited times where there would be possibilities for flying the drone.
- We need to keep the campsites free of drone traffic in agreement with the landowners.
- There is often livestock in some areas that may get affected and we need to maintain a good relationship with the farmers.
- We have seen some people being frustrated by drone traffic and can understand this.
Having said this we do not prohibit drone use as it is out of our legislation - as long as it does not interfere with the issues mentioned above and you can fit the drone in the kayak it will be okay to bring it along. Just please discuss the use with other group members sometime after meeting up with them the first morning to settle this.
I'm flying into Oslo, how do I get to the meeting point?
The best way to meet your host is to take the train from Oslo center to Voss. The train ride takes about 6.5 hours and goes through some amazing scenery. By prior arrangement with your host, it may be possible for the group transfer to collect you from Voss on their way from the airport but if the timings don't align they can help you to arrange a private transfer from Voss to the hotel instead.
How do I make my own way to Bergen airport on Day 9?
If you have reserved a flight departing Bergen airport before 12:00 noon on Day 9, you can either book a private transfer or make your own way by public transport. Trains run regularly from central Voss to Bergen city center and connect with trams to Bergen airport. You should normally allow around three hours for the combined journey. For further info please visit http://www.vy.no
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips typically consist of a mix of solo travelers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.
It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.
Don't just take our word for it:
- 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
- 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
- 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
See here for more info about the Much Better Adventures tribe.
What's the weather like?
The weather in summer is very comfortable for kayaking and camping, with temperatures at 59-68 degrees Fahrenheit, sometimes more. It can get chilly at night so a warm sweater and some thermals are vital. This time of year daylight in Norway is constant with only 2–3 hours of darkness in the evenings.
We recommend joining this trip in July and August for the warmest temperatures, but it’s great all summer.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 163kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
