Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to the fjords
GuesthouseTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Descend into Stavanger, gateway to the southern fjords, and get your first glimpse of the region you'll spend the next week exploring. Your local host will meet you at the airport and transfer you around an hour by electric van to the village of Forsand, at the entrance to Lysefjord. Here you'll settle into your base for the first three nights: a traditional farmhouse set among forest and fjord. Lysefjord itself stretches 40km, flanked by cliffs and peaks rising to 830m - unique, dramatic and stands out due to its wild beauty. Once you've found your feet, there's the option of a sauna and a cold dip in the fjord before sitting down to a relaxed welcome dinner with your group and guides.
Day 2
Hike the Lysefjord panoramic trail
Hiking6hrs · 10km · 600m up · 900m downBoat Ride30minsGuesthouseTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Tuck into breakfast at your base, you'll take a short transfer to the trailhead for your first fjordside hike along a newly established trail overlooking the entrance to Lysefjord. This panoramic trail climbs steadily to Hatten, ‘The Hat’, at 406m, giving you your first pinch-me view of the trip. Continue past Fantapytten, a natural rock pool perched above the water, and Fantahala, locally known as the vagabonds' cove, where your guide will share stories of the area's cultural history as you traverse rocky terrain and several viewpoints before descending to the fjord's edge at Refskai. A short ferry ride brings you back across the water to your base for a well-earned dinner, and a sauna if you fancy it.
Day 3
Preikestolen via a hidden trail
Hiking6-7hrs · 9km · 600m up · 600m downCanoeing30minsGuesthouseTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
An epic hike awaits you today. After breakfast, set off towards one of Norway's most celebrated natural landmarks: Preikestolen, also known as Pulpit Rock. Your host has spent years in this part of the fjords, and you'll make the most of that insider knowledge by taking a hidden route that sidesteps the busy main trail. The route begins with a short paddle across a lake before picking up a little-used path to Neverdalsfjellet (706m), with wide views across Lysefjord and the surrounding peaks. A series of manageable scrambles and rocky viewpoints follow, with help from your guide, before you reach Preikestolen itself - a flat rock platform rising high above the fjord below. Take in that iconic view before descending via a quiet nature trail back to your farmhouse base. Tomorrow brings 4444 steps, so a relaxed evening is well timed.
Day 4
Climb the Florli staircase
Hiking4hrs · 6km · 730m up · 730m downBoat Ride1hrCabinTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
After breakfast, pack up and say goodbye to your first base before hopping on the ferry to journey deeper into Lysefjord to the small hamlet of Florli, reachable only by boat or on foot. Here you'll tackle the famous Florli staircase - a steep climb of 4444 wooden steps built alongside an old hydroelectric pipeline. After a steady push, with plenty of chances to pause and take in the evolving view, you’ll reach the top for a moment of rest to reward your efforts. From there, the route continues through a forest and past some spectacular waterfalls before descending back to the fjord. This afternoon, another ferry takes you to the head of the fjord at Lysebotn, where you'll spend the next three nights in a series of traditional, colourful cabins run by the Norwegian Trekking Association.
Day 5
Jenafjell and the highlands
Hiking6-7hrs · 10km · 680m up · 680m downCabinTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Today's route heads into the highlands on a quieter trail once used by fur traders, climbing steadily through remote terrain towards Jenafjell (830m), near the protected habitat of the world's southernmost herd of wild reindeer. A final stretch through marshy, sparsely vegetated ground brings you to the summit, rewarding you with an amazing view across the full length of Lysefjord and over the dramatic 27 hairpin bends of the Lyseveien road below. Return to your cabins in the afternoon for some downtime, before a well-deserved dinner celebrating a lesser-known summit that deserves far more attention than it gets.
Day 6
Kjerag and Kjeragbolten
Hiking6hrs · 11km · 850m up · 850m downCabinTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
Today brings another iconic fjord sight, kicking off with a drive up the famous Lyseveien road - one of Norway's most spectacular mountain roads, switchbacking its way up the mountain with 27 bends in total before you reach the trailhead. From here, the route heads across smooth granite slabs and up along mountain ridges to the cliffs of Kjerag, rising more than 1000m above the water. The star of the show is Kjeragbolten, a boulder wedged between two vertical rock faces that has become one of Norway's most photographed spots. The hike continues along the clifftops to several more viewpoints before returning the same way. Back at fjord level, with your final hike firmly under your belt, it's time to sit down for a farewell meal with your guide and fellow hikers.
Day 7
Fjord cruise back to Stavanger
Boat Ride2hrsBreakfast includedShow Day 7 detailHide detail
Enjoy a final breakfast in Lysebotn before boarding a boat for a full-length cruise through Lysefjord. This is a chance to take in the full scope of the fjord landscapes you've spent the past week hiking through. The cruise passes beneath towering rock walls and waterfalls cascading into the fjord before docking back at Forsand, where your host will transfer you to Stavanger Airport, arriving around midday in time for flights from 14:00 onwards.

FAQs
What if things don't go to plan?
Your host is a long-time resident of the Lysefjord region and knows this part of the fjords inside out. They’ll use their local knowledge and experience to adapt the itinerary if needed, switching the order of hikes, for example, if conditions are more sheltered in certain spots on any given day of the trip.
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
You'll have 1 guide for groups of up to 8 people, with an additional guide joining for groups of 9-12 people.
Can I leave my excess luggage somewhere?
You’ll stay 3 nights at each of two bases at either end of the Lysefjord. Your luggage can remain at each base while you head out hiking each day, and luggage transfers are provided throughout the trip.
What do I do about drinking water?
The tap water in Norway is perfectly safe to drink; you can fill up your water bottles and/or bladder from the guesthouse each morning before venturing out for that day's hike.
Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places they may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you are fully informed about what may be possible on your trip, depending on your individual requirements. Please read this carefully before travelling to ensure you are adequately prepared for the situation on the ground.
Once you have booked your trip, please complete your passenger information form as soon as possible with details of any dietary requirements. After submission, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Providing this information early allows them to plan accordingly and deliver the best possible experience. Please also remind your guide of your dietary requirements upon arrival, as discussing them in person helps ensure clarity around individual preferences and limitations from the outset.
BACKGROUND Food in Norway is influenced by its Nordic heritage, with a strong focus on fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients such as fish, meat, dairy, root vegetables and grains. While traditional cuisine can be quite simple, Norway has a high standard of food quality and hygiene.
Vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free diets are increasingly understood, particularly in cities and larger towns. However, options may be more limited in remote or rural areas, where menus tend to be more traditional and centred around meat, fish and dairy products. Plant-based alternatives are becoming more common but may not always be widely available outside urban centres.
Food labelling standards are generally clear, and awareness of common allergens is good, although this can vary depending on the location and provider. Breakfasts on this trip are typically served at accommodation and are often buffet-style, with breads, cereals, dairy, cold cuts and spreads. Packed lunches and group dinners are prepared by your guides or local hosts, with dietary needs accommodated where disclosed in advance. Your local hosts will always do their best to provide a safe and enjoyable food experience throughout the trip.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance.
Vegan Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance.
Kosher Fully certified kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and cannot usually be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative, if suitable. Please refer to the sections above.
Halal Certified halal supply varies by location and may not always be possible. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative, if suitable. Please refer to the sections above.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten-Free (for coeliac disease, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance.
Lactose-Free Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency can be accommodated where disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please contact our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be safely accommodated on this trip.
This allows us to consider the severity of your allergy, the food provision available and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.
Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. Allergies may also result in more limited or repetitive food options in some locations. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, guests remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
Can I stand on the boulder at Kjerag for a picture?
No - we don’t allow our customers to step onto the Kjerag boulder. The boulder suspended between two cliffs is an iconic and widely photographed landmark. However, it also comes with a significant level of risk. The drop beneath the boulder is around 984 metres (over 3,200 feet), and while many photos online make it look straightforward, conditions on the ground can vary dramatically. The rock surface can be slippery, especially in wet or windy conditions, and strong, unpredictable gusts of wind are common in the Lysefjord region. There are no safety barriers or harness systems in place, so a misstep or loss of balance would have severe, irreversible consequences. Even experienced hikers can underestimate how exposed it is.
It is not illegal to stand on the boulder. This is purely a company safety policy based on our duty of care to all travellers and guides. Your safety is our top priority. We design our trips to be adventurous, but not reckless. Allowing participants to take part in activities with a high risk of serious injury or fatality goes against that principle. We also consider the group dynamic in instances like this, as guides cannot safely supervise multiple people attempting the boulder. Our responsibility is to ensure everyone returns home safely
You will still have unbelievable views and photos during the hike to Kjerag, with some of the most spectacular scenery in Norway and plenty of safe vantage points for incredible photos - including angles where the boulder itself is visible.
What is the cruise like on the final morning of the trip?
Your host has included a journey along the length of the fjord on the final day, which cuts out a couple of hours of driving and gives you a cracking final experience to take home with you. The journey is done on what is known as the Combi Ferry, which transports foot traffic and a small number of vehicles along the entire length of the fjord. It does this at a leisurely pace compared to the speedier local ferry taken on earlier days. This final journey is a chance to take in the full scope of the landscape you've been adventuring through the past week, and offers some final time for reflection and reminiscing with your fellow hikers and host before you head back to the 'real' world.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).
For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way. Check out our Community Values – a shared code to make sure that everyone's experience is safe, inclusive and brilliantly unforgettable.
It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

What's the weather like?
The hiking season in the Lysefjord region of Norway's southern fjords runs from May to October, when temperatures are favourable, trails are usually free of snow, and daylight hours are long.
May: 8–15 °C (46–59 °F). Spring conditions with fresh air and occasional rain showers.
June: 11–18 °C (52–64 °F). Mild temperatures and long daylight hours approaching the summer solstice.
July & August: 13–20 °C (55–68 °F). The warmest months of the year, ideal for hiking and fjord swimming.
September: 10–16 °C (50–61 °F). Cooler temperatures and the first signs of autumn colour in the highlands.
October: 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). Crisp air and fewer visitors, although the weather can be more changeable.
Rain is possible at any time of year on Norway’s west coast, so waterproof clothing is essential. It rarely gets completely dark during mid-summer in June and July, with only a soft ‘powder-blue’ twilight late at night. True darkness generally returns to this region by mid-August.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 85kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
