This trip is a perfect one week adventure getaway! 4. 5 stars.

The first full day was canyoning; then visit to a cacao farm and rafting into the jungle; then zip lining, tarzan swing, and jungle eco lodge; then rafting out of the jungle and drive to the Caribbean side; kayaking and wildlife spotting; finally snorkelling and a beautiful beach.

The highlight is for sure the rafting and staying in the jungle eco lodge. It's just your group and guides and it's a really unique experience.

Speaking of the guides, they were fabulous, so knowledgeable about the wildlife and area, as well as being really encouraging and supportive of the group.

This has the potential to be a 5 star trip if some things on the description and kit list are modified. It should be more clearly laid out which accommodations have air conditioning and wifi, and the last hotel in San Jose was very strange and not fitting with the rest of the trip. For the kit list, you do not need hiking boots but you absolutely need water shoes (which I wore daily), as well as a headlight and power bank for staying in the jungle with no power. Finally, if you have any dietary restrictions I recommend bringing protein bars or snacks of your own, as I had a few meals that were just vegetables and fruit.

Overall I would really recommend this trip if you're looking for a quick getaway filled with adventures.

I had an absolutely incredible week on the Ultimate Costa Rica Adventure with Much Better Adventures. If you're wondering whether one week is too short — it really isn’t. At no point did the trip feel rushed or like we were just ticking off highlights. On the contrary, the itinerary was thoughtfully designed and allowed us to experience some truly special (and not always touristy) parts of Costa Rica.

We started in the mountainous region of Turrialba, where we went canyoning. It was such an adventurous and exciting way to kick off the week.

The absolute highlight for me was the jungle experience. Reaching our lodge by white water rafting already made it feel like a real expedition. The accommodation itself was unforgettable: open to nature with walls made of mosquito nets, so you fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of the jungle with views straight into the rainforest. What made it even more special was that we had the entire place to ourselves as a group, which created a really unique sense of connection. In the evenings, the local guides would cook for us, which made everything feel even more personal, relaxed, and cozy.

The group itself was also fantastic. Such a fun mix of people from all over the world. There was a lot of laughter and a great atmosphere throughout the entire week.

A special mention goes to the guides — especially Henry, Pablo, and Michael — who were truly amazing. It was great that multiple guides accompanied us for a large part of the trip, allowing us to really get to know them. They joined us for dinners and genuinely felt like part of the group, which made the whole experience even more special. Their knowledge of the region was incredible and they kept surprising us with stories and insights. By the end of the week, it honestly felt like I had made three new friends on the other side of the world — and I would love to see them again someday.

The final part of the trip at the Caribbean coast was beautiful, and the hotel there in particular was stunning. After the more rugged jungle experience, it felt like the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a bit more comfort and luxury; a really well-balanced ending to the trip.

If I had to mention one small downside, it would be the very last hotel near the airport, which didn’t quite match the quality of the rest of the trip. It might be worth considering a more comfortable option there.

Overall, with this trip Much Better Adventures exceeded all expectations once again. It was adventurous, diverse, well-organized, and full of unforgettable moments. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and active way to explore Costa Rica.

Between rapids, calm stretches invite you to swim, float or simply soak up the spectacular scenery. By afternoon, you’ll reach the remote Pacuare Eco Lodge, perched above the river and surrounded by dense jungle. The cabanas are rustic but comfortable, with a shared kitchen, showers, and wide views of the valley. Once settled, you can cool off in the river, wander into the forest or stretch out in a hammock to the calls of toucans and the rush of water. Wake to the sounds of the rainforest surrounding your lodge. After a breakfast of fresh fruit and local dishes, your guides will brief you and fit your harness for an adrenaline-filled morning above the jungle floor. The adventure begins with an ascent into the treetops, before launching onto a course of nine zip-lines, including the longest on the Pacuare. You’ll glide from platform to platform through dense foliage, alternating between long, fast stretches that bring a rush of speed and shorter, slower sections that give you time to take in the views of rivers, waterfalls and the emerald canopy all around. The grand finale is the Tarzan Swing, a free-fall drop that arcs back and forth above the jungle. Back at the lodge, the rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace, whether that’s relaxing in a hammock, listening to the sounds of the forest or watching for colorful birds and wildlife nearby. National Geographic has even named the Lower Pacuare one of the top five commercially rafted rivers in the world. Midway through, you’ll stop for a riverside picnic before continuing downstream toward the Caribbean lowlands, where your rafting adventure ends. For the next two nights, you’ll stay at Shawandha Lodge, an eco-retreat set in a rainforest reserve just steps from Playa Chiquita. The wooden bungalows come with hammock terraces and are surrounded by wildlife-rich gardens, while a waterfall pool and tropical restaurant make it an ideal base for exploring the Caribbean coast.

Food and Dietary info

The food on this trip will be typically local dishes that use wholesome, fresh ingredients, emphasising natural taste and simplicity. A cornerstone of Costa Rican meals is rice, often accompanied by beans. You'll find these in many meals – like the national dish, gallo pinto (typically enjoyed at breakfast, this is a flavourful mix of rice and black beans accompanied by eggs, tortillas, and sour cream). Another typical dish is casado (a platter of rice, beans, plantains, salad, and a choice of meat), served with picadillo (a finely chopped vegetable medley). Seafood is abundant along the coastal regions, with dishes like ceviche (fresh fish marinated in citrus juices, mixed with onions, coriander and peppers) on offer. You’ll also try traditional snacks and street foods: empanadas stuffed with cheese, meat, or beans and patacones (twice-fried green plantains served with a tangy dipping sauce). For something sweet, you can try tres leches cake, a moist sponge cake soaked in three types of milk, or cajeta de coco, a coconut fudge. You’ll find lots of fresh fruits, juices and smoothies readily available using mango, papaya, pineapple, and bananas. Of course, Costa Rican coffee, renowned worldwide, is a must-try. The country's unique climate and rich volcanic soil provides perfect conditions for growing high-quality coffee beans. Costa Rica is also known for its exceptional chocolate and the cacao bean has been cultivated in the country for centuries. Local chocolatiers produce a range of exquisite chocolates, from dark and rich to creamy and sweet, often with unique local flavours like tropical fruit or spices. Enjoy!

Your host has deliberately not included some lunches and evening meals in your trip as it's great fun to explore the food options in each place. Dinner (where not included) will be at local restaurants and will cost approx $15-$20pp. Your guide will be with you to make suggestions of where to eat and when to arrange group meals.

Trip level explained

Level 2

Easy-Moderate

This action-packed week-long adventure is designed to showcase the very best of Costa Rica through a wide range of activities and immersive experiences in its natural environments, from rivers and rainforests to beaches and jungle canopies. Wildlife is ever-present throughout the journey, with an expert guide on hand to help you spot and understand it along the way.

No previous experience is required for any of the activities, just a reasonable level of fitness and a sense of adventure. Before canyoning, zip-lining, rafting or kayaking, you’ll receive a full introduction and safety briefing, making them suitable even for complete beginners. Please note that you should feel comfortable with heights, as some elements (such as canyoning and zip-lining) involve being elevated or suspended.

Over two thrilling days, you’ll navigate the renowned Lower Pacuare River, celebrated by National Geographic as one of the world’s top rafting destinations. You’ll experience a dynamic mix of Class II–III rapids (perfect for beginners) and the more heart-pounding Class III–IV rapids as you journey through verdant river canyons and gorge walls draped in rainforest. The rafting route offers both adrenaline-fueled and serene sections, ideal for swimming, soaking in waterfalls, or simply floating to the rhythm of the jungle. Your expert guides will provide comprehensive training and pave the way for a safe and exhilarating experience. A moderate level of fitness is advised as you’ll be paddling actively and navigating rapids. Expect long days on the water, and come prepared with quick-dry gear and a readiness to get wet.

For the hiking sections, expect easy jungle trails with walks of two to four hours at a time, often in hot and humid conditions. For the water-based activities, you’ll need to be confident in water and able to swim.

What if i need to skip an activity?

If you’ve never tried canyoning, zip-lining, rafting, or kayaking, this is the perfect opportunity to give them a go, as instruction will be tailored for first-timers. However, we understand that these activities may not be for everyone. If you’d prefer to opt out of any of them, simply let your guide know, you can instead enjoy some extra leisure time in the jungle or on the tropical beaches.

What will I need to carry?

Your larger bag suitable for all your belongings will be transported for you. You'll need a small backpack to carry personal items during each day of activity.

Wildlife encounters: factors to consider

This trip takes place in environments where wild animals are present in their natural habitat, where protections and controls on their movement may be limited or non-existent. Some species may be dangerous, venomous, or unpredictable. Sightings are a privilege, but safety is key. Always follow your guide’s instructions and any posted signage.

We recommend considering your comfort around wildlife and discussing any concerns with your host before travel, particularly if you have allergies, phobias, or related health conditions.

Hot climate: factors to consider

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

FAQs

In Costa Rica, tap water quality varies depending on the region. In many tourist areas and larger cities like San José, the tap water is generally safe to drink; however, in more remote areas it's advisable to stick to filtered water as a precaution. There will be drinking water available at each night's lodging, and your host will carry refill water where possible as well. Remember to bring a reusable water bottle (1-2 liters) to carry with you during activities as this will help reduce waste from single-use plastic bottles.

Your host will provide sit-on-top kayaks, which are great for both beginners and experienced paddlers. These kayaks are lightweight, stable, and easy to maneuver. Before you set off, your guide will give you all the necessary information to use the kayaks safely.

Overtourism is increasingly affecting popular destinations such as Costa Rica, making it harder to enjoy its natural wonders in peace. The high influx of visitors can strain local resources, damage the environment, and raise living costs for residents. To avoid contributing to these issues, we have deliberately chosen not to include some of Costa Rica’s better-known and heavily visited spots (such as Manuel Antonio National Park and Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve). Instead, we focus on lesser-known but equally breathtaking destinations such as Turrialba, the Pacuare River, Punta Uva, and Cahuita National Park.

These areas offer outstanding natural beauty and often place a strong emphasis on conservation. For example, the Pacuare River flows through a protected forest reserve managed by local indigenous communities, who enforce visitor limits and sustainable practices to safeguard the rainforest ecosystem. In this way, you’ll experience Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity and landscapes through a more sustainable approach to travel, one that benefits residents, visitors, and the country’s precious natural environment.

Travel in wild and remote places always comes with a degree of unpredictability; weather, road conditions, and local factors can sometimes mean adjustments to the itinerary. Your expert local guides are trained to adapt quickly and will always prioritize your safety and enjoyment. If a planned activity can’t go ahead exactly as scheduled, they’ll arrange the best possible alternative so you don’t miss out on the experience.

You'll be accompanied throughout by a highly experienced tour leader and naturalist guide, who will manage the trip from start to finish and ensure you get the most out of every destination. For larger groups of more than eight travelers, an additional support guide will join the trip.

For specialist activities such as rafting, canyoning, and zip-lining, you'll also be joined by certified activity guides. These experts are responsible for safety briefings, equipment, and instruction, ensuring you feel confident and well-prepared.

Yes, please note that the zipline course in Pacuare has a maximum weight limit of 240 pounds or 238 lbs per person, approximately.

Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. BACKGROUND

Costa Rican, or Tico, cuisine is shaped by tropical farming, coastal access, and a history of small-scale agriculture, resulting in simple, filling meals built around rice, beans, plantains, seasonal fruit, and modest portions of meat or fish, often eaten as set plates or hearty soups.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian -Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Vegetarian travelers generally find options based on rice, beans, and vegetables.

Vegan -Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Kosher -Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. The Host is unable to guarantee a separate, certified cooking/preparation area or the use of certified kosher products. They can, however, provide meals that exclude non-Kosher ingredients (such as pork and shellfish) and avoid mixing meat and dairy. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal -Certified Halal supply varies by location and may not always be possible. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below) -Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Gluten-free diets and allergies can be more challenging due to wheat-based breads, fried snacks, and shared cooking oil, especially in rural areas, so it helps to plan ahead.

Lactose Free -Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as grilled meats, rice, and vegetable dishes though eggs are common.

ALLERGIES Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.

This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

This trip runs year-round, exploring regions such as Turrialba, the Pacuare River, Cahuita National Park, and Punta Uva. Costa Rica’s diverse geography means the weather can vary widely from place to place, but thanks to its tropical location, temperatures and humidity remain fairly consistent throughout the year.

Coastal areas are warm, averaging 77–93°F, while higher elevations such as the central highlands are cooler, around 63–79°F. Humidity remains high year-round, typically 60–80%.

Costa Rica has a typical dry season (December–April) with hotter, sunnier days and minimal rain, and a rainy season (May–November), which brings more frequent showers, lush green landscapes, fewer tourists, and excellent wildlife-spotting. Rain is usually heaviest in September and October. Destinations like Cahuita and Punta Uva, along the Caribbean coast, see more consistent rainfall year-round, with short dry spells in March–April and again in September–October.

Because of the country’s microclimates, weather forecasts can be unreliable. The best approach is to come prepared, stay flexible, and enjoy the unique conditions each day brings, whether that’s sunshine, a refreshing downpour, or the rainforest at its greenest.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 148kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
