Key Information

Day 1

Welcome to Colombia's Caribbean north

Santa Marta, Colombia. Photo: GettyImages-500732336

Touch down on Colombia’s Caribbean Coast and transfer into the vibrant port city of Santa Marta, one of the oldest cities in South America. After settling in, meet your guide and fellow travelers for an optional stroll through the historic center, passing colorful buildings, lively plazas and the waterfront. In the evening, head out for a welcome dinner in a local restaurant with your guide and fellow adventurers. This is a chance to get to know the group, chat about the adventure ahead and sample your first taste of Caribbean Colombian cuisine.

Day 2

Warm-up hike in the mountain oasis of Minca

Hiking
4hrs · 8mi · 1476ft up · 1476ft down

Leave the coast behind and head up into the cooler, greener foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Today is all about warming up your legs and acclimatizing to the region ahead of the Lost City trek kicking off tomorrow. Arrive in the peaceful mountain retreat of Minca and set out on a hike to Finca San Rafael, where you’ll visit a local cacao farm, learn about traditional production methods and taste the produce. Hike back to the village to enjoy a typical lunch in this part of Colombia, before hiking uphill to a beautiful jungle waterfall for a refreshing swim. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the rich rainforest ecosystem.

Day 3

The Lost City trek begins

Lost City Trek, Colombia. Photo: Host/Kagumu
Hiking
5-6hrs · 5mi · 1640ft up · 492ft down

Today you'll begin your trek to the Lost City, once the heart of the ancient Tayrona civilization. A scenic drive from Minca for a couple of hours will see you arriving at Machete Pelao, the official start point of the trek. Lace up your boots and hit the trail, starting off with a winding path that connects the farming region and the jungle as you meander deeper into the wilderness. Take a refreshing dip in a river to cool off from the heat and enjoy lunch in a picturesque clearing. Hike on in the afternoon through a mix of dense foliage sections, river crossings, and open areas before arriving at your camp in the mid-afternoon. Relax here before a dinner served to the sound of a jungle chorus as the sun sets—this is your soundtrack for the next few nights. Settle into your bed or hammock for your first night on the trail ahead of a big day tomorrow.

Day 4

Deeper into the jungle

Lost City Trek, Colombia. Photo: Host/Kagumu
Hiking
8-9hrs · 9mi · 1804ft up · 722ft down

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast at camp, fueling up for the longest day of the trip. Set off trekking through the humid jungle, alive with native birds and wildlife in the cooler part of the day. The trail meanders along a riverbed with some crossings required today – wading at times through knee-deep water and enjoying swims under a waterfall. There are sections where you'll reach elevated spots for a panoramic view over the coastal mountain range of the Sierra Nevada. As you continue your journey toward the Lost City later this afternoon, your Wiwa guide will teach you about the sacred traditions, myths, and legends of the local indigenous people, telling stories about the tomb raiders and grave robbers that once combed the land, looking for gold and ancient artifacts. Reaching the second camp after an epic push today, you'll relax, recharge, and refuel here before bunking down for the night. The Lost City itself awaits tomorrow.

Day 5

The final steps to reach la Ciudad Perdida, The Lost City

Lost City, Colombia. Photo: shutterstock_2646623681
Hiking
6hrs · 6mi · 1312ft up · 2428ft down

Rise early today as the trip reaches its pinnacle. After a short while trekking further through the jungle, you'll arrive at the ancient stone steps leading up to Ciudad Perdida, an archaeological site that has been hidden in the jungle for centuries. There are 1,200 steps in total, and the climb is a challenging and memorable rite of passage to arrive at the Lost City. Eventually, the full expanse of the site comes into view, with 170+ stone terraces surrounded by the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. It's a truly amazing site, built by the Tayrona people around 800 AD, roughly 650 years before Machu Picchu. The ruins were only rediscovered in 1975. Spend some time exploring its terraces and learning about the history and spiritual significance from your Wiwa guide, while taking in the misty mountain views. As well as having time to explore, the group will also take part in a ceremony to pay tribute to the natural environment. After soaking up this incredible place, begin your return hike back to camp. Enjoy the light fading and the nocturnal life of the jungle reaching a crescendo on your final night camping on the Lost City route.

Day 6

Hike out of the jungle to the Caribbean

Tayrona, Colombia. Photo: shutterstock_2382179645
Hiking
6hrs · 8mi · 66ft up · 1115ft down

Complete your final stretch of trekking today, descending through the jungle back to the trailhead at Machete, stopping to bathe under waterfalls and swim in rivers. From Machete, you'll transfer on to Los Naranjos on the Caribbean Coast, at the edge of Tayrona National Park. This stretch of coastline is truly stunning, with high mountains and thick, lush, tropical vegetation flanking the azure waters lapping at golden beaches. Settle into your eco-hotel where you'll stay for the next two nights, kicking off your hiking boots and slipping on some sandals to enjoy some well-earned downtime by the sea, after your epic push to complete the Lost City trek.

Day 7

Full day of relaxing by the Caribbean Sea

Tayrona, Colombia. Photo: Host / Kagumu

Enjoy a slow morning by the beach right across from your lodging. Los Naranjos has a rustic, laid-back paradise feel and is much quieter and less developed than the nearby Tayrona Park beaches or Santa Marta, with a secluded, hidden gem vibe. Soak up the morning relaxing on the sand, swim in the warm Caribbean waters or unwind in a hammock with a coffee. If you're keen for more active exploits following your time on the Lost City trek, there’s also the option to hop in a kayak to paddle along the Piedras River through jungle-lined waterways out to the sea – a unique way to experience this wild coastline. Later this evening, you'll head out together and raise a drink to celebrate an unforgettable week of adventure.

Day 8

Goodbye Colombia

Trekking Lost City, Colombia. Photo: Host/Kagumu

Wake one last time in Colombia and then head back to the airport in time for your flight home. If you are flying home from Medellin rather than directly from Santa Marta, you will need to book your own internal flight back to Medellin – see the 'Getting There' section for more details.

Your host will meet you on arrival at Santa Marta's Simon Bolivar International Airport on Day 1, then transfer you downtown to your lodging in central Santa Marta where your adventure kicks off. On the last day of the trip, your host will transfer the group back to the same airport from Los Naranjos – around 90 minutes down the coast from Santa Marta. You can expect to arrive back at the airport by around noon, in time for any onward flights departing from 2:00 PM onwards on Day 8. If you wish to arrive earlier or stay on later, your host can arrange private transfers and extra nights of lodging in Santa Marta for an additional cost. See Optional Extras for details.

Travel options

Santa Marta's Simon Bolivar International Airport is serviced by direct flights from Bogota, Medellin, and Panama City, which connect with a large number of international flights from major hubs in Europe and North America. If you are extending your stay independently to explore the Caribbean Coast of Colombia further, you may wish to look into booking your onward flight from Cartagena instead of Santa Marta, as Cartagena has direct flights to some European and East Coast US destinations. Cartagena is around four hours from Santa Marta by road.

What is the food like?

Colombian food. Photo: Host/Kagumu

Food on this trip is a flavorful mix of Colombian Caribbean and mountain cuisine, designed to keep you fueled for active days while giving you a taste of local culture. Expect fresh, simple, and hearty meals made with locally sourced ingredients, with more variety in the towns and a more functional, energy-focused menu during the trek. In Santa Marta and Minca, meals are more varied and reflective of the region’s rich culinary heritage. Typical dishes include grilled meats or fish, coconut rice, beans, arepas (corn cakes), and fried plantain, often accompanied by fresh salads and vibrant tropical fruits such as mango, papaya, and pineapple. Coffee lovers are in for a treat in Minca, where some of Colombia’s best coffee is grown and served locally. During the Lost City trek, meals are prepared by the camp stewards along the route and are simple but nourishing, designed to sustain long days on the trail. Expect generous portions of rice, pasta, beans, vegetables, eggs, and meat or fish, along with fresh fruit and snacks such as watermelon to keep your energy levels up. Meals are served communally at these jungle camps, adding to the social and immersive nature of the experience. On the Caribbean Coast, food leans heavily on fresh seafood, with dishes often featuring grilled fish, rice, salads, and tropical flavors, enjoyed in a relaxed beachfront setting.

If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances, or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’ for specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may get at home varies in different destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before making your booking to ensure that this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.

What is the accommodation like?

Room, Hotel Boutique la Solera del Pozo. Photo: Hotel Boutique la Solera del Pozo

On your first night of the trip, you’ll stay at Hotel Boutique La Solera del Pozo, a beautifully restored colonial house in the heart of Santa Marta’s historic center. This boutique hotel blends traditional architecture with modern comfort, featuring a peaceful central courtyard and a plunge pool to escape the tropical heat. You’ll be within walking distance of lively plazas, restaurants, and the seafront. You'll stay in comfortable twin-share rooms with air conditioning and en suite bathrooms.

Hotel Minca La Casona, Minca, Colombia. Photo: Hotel Minca La Casona

Tucked into the lush hills of Minca, you'll spend one night at a laid-back eco lodge, Hotel Minca La Casona. The hotel provides a tranquil escape surrounded by jungle and mountain views. Spend your downtime relaxing in hammocks, cooling off in natural pools, or enjoying the fresh mountain air after a day of exploring waterfalls and coffee farms. Lodging is in simple but comfortable twin-share rooms, designed to blend with the natural surroundings.

Lost City Trek, Colombia. Photo: Host/Kagumu
The Lost City

Lodging during the Lost City trek is in remote jungle camps set along the trail, offering a simple but well-organized base after each day of hiking. Expect a sociable, communal atmosphere, with large open-sided shelters surrounded by dense rainforest. The camps are run by, and financially benefit the local indigenous communities. You'll spend three consecutive nights staying at these camps. Sleeping arrangements are dorm-style, with a choice of bunk beds or hammocks (subject to availability and preference). Beds are typically wooden bunks with thin mattresses, while hammocks are strung under covered structures – both options come with mosquito nets for protection overnight. Bedding is provided, though we recommend bringing a sleeping bag liner for extra comfort. Facilities at the camps are basic but functional: expect shared bathrooms, cold-water showers and no WiFi or signal, keeping the experience firmly off-grid. While far from luxurious, the camps are comfortable enough for a good night’s rest and are part of the authentic experience of trekking through one of Colombia’s most remote and biodiverse regions.

Posada Villa Margarita, Colombia. Photo: Posada Villa Margarita
Los Naranjos

Set right by the Caribbean Sea, your final two nights of the trip are at a rustic eco-lodge offering a true off-grid beach experience. After your efforts for several days to complete the Lost City trek, you'll recoup and unwind here, waking to the sound of the waves, spending your days swimming in warm waters or unwinding in shaded hammocks, and enjoying spectacular sunsets. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with a relaxed, back-to-nature feel, just steps from the beach.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private hotel room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. This is only available for the one night in Santa Marta, one night in Minca and two nights on the Caribbean coast: it is not available while camping on the way to the Lost City. Please request this at the time of booking.

This trip runs during Colombia’s drier seasons (Nov–Apr and Aug–Sep), offering some of the best conditions for trekking and beach time. Expect hot, tropical weather throughout, with high humidity on the coast and in the jungle, and slightly cooler temperatures up in the mountains.

In Minca, located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the higher elevation brings a welcome drop in temperature. Expect daytime highs of 72–82°F, with cooler, fresher evenings.

During the Lost City trek, conditions are hot, humid and physically demanding. Temperatures usually sit between 79–90°F, with high humidity and occasional bursts of rain, especially under the dense jungle canopy. Trails can be muddy and slippery, so expect proper tropical trekking conditions year-round.

On the Caribbean Coast (Santa Marta and beach stay), days are typically hot and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 82–93°F. Evenings stay warm and balmy, rarely dropping below 75°F. Rainfall is generally low during these months, though short tropical showers can still occur.

Overall, you’ll get a mix of sunshine, heat and humidity, with the best chance of dry, clear days on the coast and slightly cooler, more comfortable conditions in the mountains.

Tips

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however, we suggest the following as a guideline:

  • $3-$5 (USD) per person, per day

Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Personal expenses

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 413kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Colombian cuisine is shaped by its diverse landscapes, from the Caribbean Coast to the Andean mountains, and centers around fresh, locally sourced ingredients and simple, hearty dishes. Meals typically feature staples such as rice, beans, plantain, corn, eggs, meat, and fresh fish, often accompanied by tropical fruits and fresh juices. While food is generally flavorful and nourishing, it can be less varied than in more internationally influenced destinations, particularly in rural and remote areas. On this trip, you’ll experience a mix of meals in towns, eco-lodges, and during the Lost City trek. In cities like Santa Marta and Minca, there is a wider range of options and greater flexibility for dietary requirements. However, during the trek itself and in more remote locations, menus are more fixed and based on what can be transported and prepared in basic conditions. This means choice can be limited, and meals may be repetitive.

That said, hosts are experienced in catering for a range of dietary needs where notified in advance, and will do their best to adapt meals accordingly. Fresh ingredients are widely used, but cross-contamination can be harder to control in remote kitchens. Travelers with dietary requirements should be prepared for simpler substitutions and less variety at certain points in the trip, particularly during the trek. Breakfasts are typically simple (eggs, bread, fruit, coffee), lunches are often local set meals or packed for trekking days, and dinners are hearty and designed to refuel after active days.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Vegan
Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Kosher
Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal
Certified Halal supply varies by location and may not always be possible. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten-free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below)
Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Lactose-free
Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

You should avoid drinking tap water in this region of Colombia. While trekking to the Lost City, you will be provided with clean drinking water to top your own bottles up with. The hotels you'll stay at in Santa Marta, Minca and Los Naranjos will also have safe drinking water to top up your water bottles with, ahead of each day. If you're keen to bring along your own water filtration system to fill up from fresh water sources in Minca and along the Lost City route, please have a read of our guide to the best water filters for adventurers.

You'll have two tour leaders throughout the adventure, and in addition, an indigenous guide from the Wiwa community joins the group for the Lost City portion of the trip. For group sizes of five and fewer, there will be one tour leader alongside the Wiwa guide, rather than two.

Yes – any luggage you don’t need for the trek can be safely stored at the hotel in Santa Marta while you’re in the jungle. You’ll just need to pack a smaller bag with the essentials for the Lost City trek. Your main luggage will be kept securely and will be returned to you when you arrive back at the Caribbean Coast at the end of the trek.

Adventure travel in remote and wild places doesn’t always run exactly to schedule – and that’s part of the experience. Your host and guides are highly experienced in operating in this region and will always prioritize your safety while adapting plans where needed. On the Lost City trek, conditions can change quickly. Heavy rain can make trails muddy, rivers higher and crossings slower, which may affect hiking times or daily distances. In very rare cases, extreme weather or local conditions may require route adjustments or changes to camp locations. The pace of the trek can also vary depending on the group, and your guides will manage this to ensure everyone completes the journey safely.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
