What is the food like?

A plate of grilled fish, a traditional dish in the Amazon.

Ecuador’s cuisine is shaped by its diverse geography, from coastal fisheries to Andean highlands and Amazonian rainforest, resulting in meals that are typically simple, seasonal and centred on staples like rice, maize, potatoes and fresh produce, with meat and fish varying by region. In the Amazon, at Kuyana Lodge, food is grown locally and traditional dishes are prepared by local chefs. Some common dishes served in Ecuador are Locro de Papa (a thick, creamy potato soup served with avocado and cheese), hornado (slow-roasted pig cooked in a wood-fired oven), llapingachos (iconic potato patties stuffed with cheese and seared until crispy) and Ecuadorian ceviche (unique as it is served as a cold, soup-like dish with a flavourful, citrus broth).

If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’ for specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may get at home varies in different destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before making your booking to ensure that this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.

What is the accommodation like?

Standard room at the Ikala Hotel, Quito, Ecuador.
Quito

On your first night in Quito, you'll usually stay at the simple but comfortable Ikala Hotel, located in the Mariscal neighbourhood of the capital, which offers a variety of facilities and services, providing all you need for a good night's sleep. Rooms offer private bathrooms, balconies, air conditioning and free WiFi; the hotel also has a sun terrace, hot tub, and games room. Some departures will stay at the Casa Aliso, according to availability, which offers a similar experience.

La Floresta Hotel, Banos
Baños

In Baños, you'll spend three nights at La Floresta Hotel. Located in a quiet street and surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, it's also within walking distance of the lively downtown. The hotel’s design embraces the aesthetic of local artisans and offers guests a boutique experience, with nicely decorated interiors and a lush garden and terraces. You'll stay in comfortable, spacious twin-share rooms with private bathroom facilities, plus amenities including TV and free WiFi. Occasionally (subject to availability), the group may be accommodated at a different property of a similar standard, such as Posada del Arte or Isla de Baños.

A hotel pool at the Kuyana Lodge in the Amazon.
Amazon Rainforest

Your base in the Amazon rainforest is the Kuyana Rainforest Lodge, nestled on the banks of the Hollin River in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Family-run Kuyana is a luxury eco-lodge, with ensuite rooms and bungalows nestled in the jungle environment surrounded by nature. The lodge runs on strong sustainability principles, utilising biodegradable products, water treatment and recycling measures, organic food grown on-site and a reforestation program to restore endemic plant species to the area around the lodge. The maximum capacity at the lodge is 18 guests: this is small-scale Amazonian tourism making a huge impact on your experience here.

A twin room at the Papallacta Thermal Spa Hotel, Ecuador.
Papallacta

You'll spend your final night at the 4-star Termas de Papallacta, a hot springs spa resort nestled in a majestic valley of the high Andes. Decorated with wooden walls and gabled roofs, rooms at Termas de Papallacta are fitted with traditional furnishings. You can relax in the thermal pools or try some of the treatments that are available at the spa (optional; payable locally).

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, a private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price and request this at the time of booking. Please note that a solo upgrade can only guaranteed for six nights of the trip while at the hotels, due to the limited size of the glamping site. Whilst in the Amazon you'll stay in twin or triple tents, depending on the size of the group.

Travel to and from the trip

Our trips do not include flights, trains or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.

Meals

One lunch and two dinners are not included in this trip, to give you free time to explore the numerous options in Baños.

Tips

Tips are not included in the trip cost; these are entirely at your discretion. If you would like to tip, the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality. We suggest $5 (USD) per day for guides and drivers.

Personal expenses

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional food and drinks, shopping and laundry.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travellers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.

Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

Touch down in Quito, the second-highest capital city in the world at 2850m (after La Paz in Bolivia). This lovely Andean city is a joy to explore on foot, with an exquisite UNESCO-listed colonial centre filled with architectural treasures, picturesque squares, and Baroque cathedrals. There are two group transfers offered today, although we recommend flying in early if time allows to have the time to wander the city at your own pace, shake off any jet lag and acclimatise to the high altitude. There will be a group meet-up late afternoon to get to know your guide and fellow adventurers. If you have the energy, you may opt to join your group for a welcome dinner in a local restaurant.

After breakfast, leave Quito behind to drive southwards along the Pan-American Highway, with its gorgeous and ever-changing scenery – passing mighty volcanic peaks and colourful Andean fields. Make a stop at Cotopaxi National Park, home to the iconic Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world at 5897m. You'll drive to an elevation of about 3800m to stretch your legs with a short, easy hike around the stunning lagoon of Limpiopungo at the foothills of the Rumiñahui volcano. The trail is well maintained and fairly flat, making it a perfect hike to acclimatise to the high altitude. Small finches and wrens are usually spotted along the trail, whilst larger shore birds and wild horses congregate in the marshy areas and the paramo. If the weather is clear, you might even catch a reflection of the majestic Cotopaxi volcano in the lagoon. Then, continue your drive towards the town of Baños, your base for the next three nights.

Wake up in Baños, the adventure capital of Ecuador. An absolute gem, it's known for its naturally heated thermal baths and incredible choice of adventure sports in forested surroundings. After breakfast, head out on a cycling trip along the Ruta de las Cascadas – a mostly downhill cycling route, visiting multiple waterfalls. First up is Agoyan Waterfall, where you can stop to admire the view. The next is Manto de la Novia, where you can opt to cross the canyon in a cable car or via zip lining (both payable locally). You'll finish up at the town of Rio Verde, from where you'll hike for 30 minutes to see views of the Pailon del Diablo (the Cauldron of the Devil) waterfall. You'll then head back to Rio Verde to get a ride back to Baños for lunch. With full tummies, you'll head out to the 'Swing at the End of the World' – arguably the most famous treehouse is the world. The swing is perched on the edge of a mountain overlooking Baños, where you can swing out towards the imposing Tungurahua volcano, which occasionally breathes out enough smoke to remind you of its existence. You'll then be taken back to Baños, where you'll have a free evening to grab dinner wherever you choose.

The afternoon is yours to take it easy after a few active days – stretch your legs on a nearby trail, soak in the local thermal springs or wander the streets of Baños at your own pace. You'll head back to the lodge for lunch, then after some downtime to relax and make the most of the lodge's luxurious facilities in the afternoon, you'll head out to a cooking class and learn to prepare local specialities made with ingredients grown in the local area.

You'll stop for a picnic lunch with the women of a local indigenous community, before continuing downstream. There really is no 'best' time to visit Ecuador and the Amazon, as any time of year offers a great chance to experience the places included in this itinerary. In the Amazon, May and June tend to be the wetter months, but the climate is slightly cooler as well. July through December see a decline in the amount of rain that falls each month. The average temperature in the jungle remains around 25°C (77°F) year-round, but during the dry season, daytime temperatures can reach 40°C (104°F). In Baños, the climate is variable and mostly mild, with temperatures ranging from 18-30°C and cooler evenings. Rainfall is possible at any time of year.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 278kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
