Detailed Logistics

Transfers

On Day 1, there's a fixed-time group transfer from Bergen Airport to your accommodation in Voss. For the 2026 season, this transfer is timed to match the arrival of Norwegian Air’s direct flight from London Gatwick (Flight DY1317).

  • For departures between June 18 and August 14, 2026, inclusive, the transfer departs Bergen Airport at 1:00 PM. Any flight arriving by 12:30 PM will work.
  • For all other 2026 departure dates, the transfer departs at 12:15 PM. Any flight arriving by 11:45 AM is fine.

If you can't make those times, it's easy to reach Voss by train — see the FAQs for details.

On Day 3, for all departures, there’s a fixed-time group transfer back to Bergen Airport. This is planned to match Norwegian Air’s evening flight to London Gatwick (Flight DY1318). As Bergen Airport is small, a 6:00 PM drop-off allows enough time to catch a flight departing at 7:00 PM. Please don’t book a flight departing before 7:00 PM.

(Transfer times for 2027 will be confirmed in October 2026 and may change.)

Travel options

There are regular flights to Bergen from major airports in the UK and Europe—either direct or via Oslo. It is possible to get the train from Bergen to Voss, or fly into Oslo. See the FAQs section for more details.

Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

No kayaking experience is needed, however, you should have a reasonable level of fitness and the ability to handle approximately 16 miles of relaxed paddling over two days.

What will I need to carry?

Your kayak will be loaded up with your personal items (in dry bags) plus your share of the food and camping gear so you'll have some extra weight on the water. Your main luggage can be stored at the host's kayak base in Gudvangen.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

This was such a special way to spend a few days. A little outside my comfort zone but our guide Chelsi filled us with confidence and supported us every step of the way. Absolutely stunning scenery! If the weather was bad I probably would have struggled but we lucked out with the weather! Perfection

From the moment I arrived at the airport until dropped back off the experience felt safe, organised and fun. Our Guide Peter, was full of information kept us safe, cooked us some hearty good food and helped us navigate our kayaking and camping. The scenery was amazing and even in the rain had a superb trip. Cannot recommend highly enough.

We lucked out with an incredibly fun and capable group and the best guide we could wish for Hajo was awesome and extremely tolerant of our banter and capacity for darting off to explore all the sights and wonders of these beautiful Fjords… impressive waterfalls, gorgeous snow-capped peaks, spotted seals, seabirds and sea stars in the incredibly crystal clear water… these are the days.

I’ve just come back from a kayaking and wild camping weekend in Norway. As a solo traveller, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the moment I arrived, everyone I met, both at the hostel and in my group—was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I was completely new to kayaking and unsure what to wear or how things would go, but our guide, Chelsi, made the whole experience unforgettable. She took the time to walk us through the route on the map, gave clear and helpful advice on what to wear, and made sure we felt comfortable and prepared before heading out on the water. There were so many special moments—enjoying hot chocolate and chocolate buns, sipping wine, and toasting marshmallows by the fire, eating delicious food cooked over an open flame, and even sitting in our kayaks on the water sharing cookies together. Chelsi went above and beyond, even with washing up, which really added to the relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Exploring the beautiful fjords from the water was absolutely breath taking. It was an experience I’ll never forget, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone—especially if you’re travelling solo and looking for something both adventurous and welcoming.

From meeting Jan, our guide / instructor / chef / raconteur / all round lovely guy to drifting / zig-zagging / paddling along the crystal cold fjords to wild camping and being part of such a wonderful group of people, we enjoyed a really special weekend. I still mildly ache from all the kayaking but totally worth it! If you have the opportunity to do this all I can say is do it! The experience, the landscape, Jan and the other adventurers made this a weekend to treasure, Chris

  • Madelaine C.

Jan was great! Beautiful trip, highly recommend, though kayaking is more physically demanding than it seems.

  • Amazing weekend with the most fantastic host Jan

    Alexis J. April 2026
What an absolutely amazing weekend! The whole thing from booking to getting back home was planned perfectly by the minute by our host Jan which made everything a lot less stressful so we could concentrate on enjoying the trip. Every little detail was thought of and we never went hungry which was needed considering the amount of energy we used. Jan is an expert guide and his knowledge and his stories kept us in engaged and in complete awe. Highly recommend this trip, I'd say once in a lifetime but we want to come back to do the longer trips with hiking included. Thank you everyone for making this weekend a special and memorable weekend.

    Emily B. September 2025
This trip was everything I hoped it would be and more! Jan was an incredible, friendly and knowledgeable guide. He couldn't have done more for us and took us to some incredible places along the Fjords whilst we kayaked. Nordic Adventures helped make everything run smoothly and efficiently, as did Much Better Adventures. The views are breathtaking and whilst challenging, the kayaking was good fun and it felt great to prove to myself I could do it! Our group were fab and we spent the night wild camping taking and laughing round the fire with good food and wine. If you want to challenge yourself in the best way, and have some fun and learn some new things to, I highly recommend this trip!
  • The trip of a lifetime

    Madeline B. September 2025
Though the trip was short, it was nothing short of incredible. Our guide, Jan, was so knowledgable. From driving the van, to teaching us the geography and history of the area, to cooking delicious meals, he made the experience so easy and enriching. The fjords were STUNNING regardless of the weather; in fact a little rain made the experience extra memorable. I can't say enough about this trip! Don't hesitate to book, and thank you, Jan!
  • Great short break

    Charlotte D. September 2025
Had a great time on this tour with Nordic Ventures. Our guide Callum was brilliant - fun and friendly but organised and professional. Our group bonded quickly and we had a great few days. As others have mentioned, there is quite a lot of time spent 'faffing about' both before and after the tour. You're not actually on the water much more than 1 full day total once you account for travel and prep time. Something you might want to bear in mind when deciding which tour to choose. Overall a great short break and would recommend

    Bethan M. September 2025
I did the two day kayaking and wild c amping experience - having not camped for over 10 years it was bit of a shock to the system - but ended up being an incredible few days, without phones, reception and immersed with nature. Our guide was called Jonny and was great - he made sure our trip worked seamlessly and we were all looked after. I did this trip with my partner and would recommend.
  • Epic Adventure!

We could not have expected anything better. Our guide, Jan, was outstanding. So much attention to detail and knowledge. The scenery was beautiful and we met some great people too. I would highly recommend to anybody! Dave Burgess
  • Breathtaking metaphorical and physically

    Zoe F. August 2025
The Fjords are stunningly beautiful and kayaking along them is something I'll never forget. Hayo was gentle, laid back, and he knew his stuff, had our group organised and on track, I felt well looked after. The first day we had lunch before setting off, which meant we didn't get a break until we arrived at the campsite. Early arrival meant we had time for a swim before dinner, adding to our experience. MBA trips are rated on difficulty ranging from 1-4, this trip, is 2, moderate. I had a single kayak and this trip left me exhausted due to a combination of lack of breaks on day 1, and lack of sleep and no kayaking partner. BUT, I did it, Hayo said I did really well, And there was time for coffee and cake and a quick shower before our coach to the airport, so I'm grateful to have been pushed. I highly recommend this trip.
  • Norwegian Kayak adventure

    Sam S. August 2025
In terms of the experience and content factors, although advertised as a two day kayak it is more two half days as you don't get out onto the fjord until after lunch and are back before lunch the next day. The wild camp is not very wild I was expecting this to be somewhere secluded with just your group however there where 3 other groups about around 40 people all together, so was very busy. The kayaking is good with a very scenic and pretty area, however you do have to put up with speed boats and tour boats going past every 5 minutes, which did take away from the experience. You seem to spend more time on a coach seeing the scenery than actually kayaking.
  • Kayaking in the fjords

    Elizabeth N. August 2025
Great trip. Beautiful scenery. We were a group of 12 which was about as many as you would want. Callum our guide was brilliant. He was knowledgeable, funny, prepared amazing meals and always checked in to see if you were ok when on the water. There were a couple of areas that cause some stress. Some of us who were solo travellers and were sharing tents had to share with the opposite sex. I think it would have been good to know this in advance to either mentally prepare or request a single tent. Some people might have had difficult experiences in the past which would preclude them from sharing with the opposite sex. Please make this clear when booking. The other thing was that there were so many people from other groups at the meeting point and in the coach which was a bit overwhelming. Might be good to know this in advance. Overall though I woild recommend the trip! Massive thanks for Callum!
  • Fantastic experience!

    Eleanor B. August 2025
Wow! What a trip! Just returned from the 2 day kayaking and wild camping trip booked through Much Better Adventures. I had never done anything quite like this before but the adventure was so well organised - from being met by Jan from Nordic Adventures at Bergen airport, to the first night in the Voss hostel, to the kayaking and camping itself, everything was so well run. Our guide, Callum, was a great communicator, champion and host. He made sure that we were all safe, comfortable, well supported, well fed and well informed throughout the excursion. There were some tough moments paddling into the wind on the first day (and my forearms ached later!) but it gave an amazing sense of achievement when we made it to our camp site. On day two the sun came out and we had lovely paddling conditions. It was incredible experiencing the fjords and mountains from the water, we saw incredible waterfalls and views that can only be accessed from the fjords. There were 12 in our group and we worked well together as a team; it was lovely beginning to get to know each other and I found everyone so supportive when paddling got a little tricky. Fantastic experience that I would recommend to solo travellers.
  • Cool Adventure

    Oleg B. August 2025
First, I recommend this adventure. Norway is stunning, and the kayaking itself was fantastic. Unfortunately, our experience was partly spoiled by the guide. My friends and I are experienced kayakers, but from the first meeting he seemed to have reservations about our group. During the tour he micromanaged almost every move, yet when we asked for advice or clarification he was unresponsive. After speaking with other participants, they confirmed the same behavior. With a different guide, this would have been a five-star trip.
  • Wonderful way to experience the fjords!

    Julia S. August 2025
Amazing scenery, and kayaking was the perfect way to experience it! I was slightly apprehensive setting out, as the weather wasn't great, but don't let that put you off - it was a wonderful trip anyway and I would certainly do it all again!

FAQs

The trip will be split into groups of up to 12 people. Let us know if you are traveling with friends, and we will make sure you are in the same group as friends who have booked.

Our local host operates multiple trips starting on the same date, so for your included group transfers between Bergen and Voss, you'll share a coach. When you are dropped off at your lodging in Voss, your host will let you know who will be in your group so you can introduce yourselves and perhaps grab some dinner together. On your first night, although the rooms at the hostel in Voss are multi-share, you won't necessarily be sharing with people from your group due to room configurations and gender mix. When you arrive at the kayaking base in Gudvangen the next day, you'll separate into your group of up to 12 and hit the water.

Of course. When you arrive at the base you'll be asked to transfer anything you need into dry-bags and can leave anything you don't behind where it will be safely secured in a locker until the end of the trip.

Our group adventures are for adults only; however, if you would like to bring children, you can arrange a private trip with the host. This trip is suitable for children aged 10 and up.

In short - one of the most beautiful places on earth.

A fjord is a deep, narrow, and elongated part of the sea that stretches inland for miles, winding around mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs, formed by giant glacier tongues and shaped over several ice ages.

There are plenty of kayaks available, with a mix of single and double, depending on your preference.

Absolutely. It's 45 minutes faster than the included transfer and is one of the most spectacular journeys you can take by rail. Here's how:

From Bergen airport, get the Flybussen airport shuttle to Bergen bus station, or the Bybanen (city light rail - cheaper but slower). Buses to/from the airport run every 10-15 minutes, and cost roughly 900NOK ($9) each way. The Bybanen (https://www.skyss.no/en/timetable-and-maps/bergen-light-rail/ ) is approx 40NOK ($4).

From the bus station, it's a few minutes walk to the train station. A taxi from the airport to the train station can be booked for between 350-550NOK ($35-$55), depending on traffic.

Trains run regularly throughout the day and don't need to be reserved in advance, with a single ticket to Voss costing roughly 200NOK ($20). Trains to Oslo stop at Voss. You can buy tickets at the ticket office up until 5:30 PM, or from the ticket machines. If you want to check the timetable or book online head to www.nsb.no.

Voss Hostel is a 12-minute walk from the station. Head out of the main station and turn right on the road. Follow the road until just before the roundabout (about 2,460 ft) then take the left turning, following the road for 656 ft more - straight to the hostel.

For the return, make your life easy by jumping on the already included transfers to Bergen Airport.

We can recommend the following from budget to high price. There are many other hotels, however, these are selected for their convenience and/or from experience:

Accommodation in Voss • Voss Hostel - great prices for individuals, couples or large groups. • Voss Camping Cabins - ideal for small groups of 3 to 4. • Store Ringheim Hotel - Perfect for cozy traditional rooms and great food.

Accommodation in Bergen • Montana Hostel, Bergen - great prices for individuals, couples or large groups. • Grand Terminus Hotel - Older style but right next to the railroad station. • Thon Bristol Hotel, Bergen - great central city location for sightseeing and nightlife. • First Marin Hotel, central city - great central city location for sightseeing and nightlife.

We don't really encourage bringing drones on this trip for several reasons:

• There are limited times when there would be opportunities for flying them.

• We need to keep the campsites free of drone traffic in agreement with the landowners.

• There is often livestock that may be affected, and we like to maintain a good relationship with the local farmers.

• We have seen some people get frustrated by drone traffic and can understand this.

That said, we do not prohibit drone use—as long as it does not interfere with the issues mentioned above and you can fit the drone in the kayak, it will be OK to bring it along, but please discuss its use with the other group members before deploying it.

The best way is to take the train from Oslo center to Voss (not Bergen), and then head to Voss Hostel. See the FAQ on how to get to Voss hostel from the airport and just follow the directions from Voss station to the hostel. The train journey takes about 6.5 hours and goes through some amazing scenery.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form ASAP with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

ALLERGIES Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team before booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.

Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

The weather in summer is very comfortable for kayaking and camping, with temperatures at 59-68 degrees Fahrenheit (sometimes more). It can get chilly at night so a warm sweater and thermals are vital. This time of year daylight in Norway is constant, with only 2-3 hours of darkness in the evenings.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 39kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
