Day 1
Meet your crew
HostelSame sex dormShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Arriving in Bergen, you'll be met at the airport by your host and transferred an hour and a half down the road to your accommodation in Voss, located in the heart of Norway's fjordland. Settle into your hostel and head out to grab dinner locally. If you're feeling brave, you could try a quick dip in the Vangsvatnet lake before a good night’s sleep ahead of the expedition kicking off tomorrow.

Hop in the van for a scenic ride deeper into the fjords, arriving at your host's kayaking base in Gudvangen after an hour on the road. Meet your guide and get prepared to spend the next five days in the great outdoors – on the trail and on the water. The expedition kicks off on dry land, hiking a trail from Gudvangen along the Naerøyfjord to the village of Bakka. From here, head up the mountain from fjord-level towards the viewpoint Rimstigen: at 2,379 feet above the water, it offers the first of many epic panoramas to come. From Rimstigen, the trail cuts back into a shallow glacial valley before another ascent to a ridge overlooking the fjord. The day's efforts culminate at the summit of Breiskrednosi, which looms 3,901 feet above the fjord, in the late afternoon. Unparalleled views – and a well-deserved rest – await before you descend down the plateau, past some old farms in the area and finally on to your home for the night at Hjølmo. Your evening is spent in a cozy mountain cabin cooking dinner, enjoying the surroundings, getting your gear ready for the next day and resting after an epic first day.
Day 3
Hike from Hjølmo to Lægdane

Fuel up on breakfast at the cabin, slip the hiking boots back on and hit the trail deeper into the backcountry, ascending back up to elevations of around 3,280 ft into the highlands above the fjord. You will be above the treeline for large parts of today, navigating your way across a rugged mountain plateau. This area is fully snow-covered during winter and you will likely still be hiking on hard, compacted snow in certain areas, which surprisingly is easier than on the animal tracks hidden beneath. The plateau is vast and your guide will select one of several routes for reaching the next stopping point, Lægdane. This area is home to a sub-alpine forest, in the past a source for high-quality timber due to the slow-grown furu trees found here. It is an area of wetlands, with small lakes hidden away in the forest. The water flow from this area feeds the large waterfall of Lægdafossen, an impressive cascade plunging down into the fjord below from an elevation of 2,297 ft. You'll set up camp for the night in the forest, before heading to explore the waterfall exit point, taking in the views down into the fjord system far below.
Day 4
Roam from summit to sea level
Hiking4-5hrs · 7mi · 820ft up · 3281ft downWild campingTwin tentAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Waking up in the forest, you'll have some time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and coffee before continuing your hike across the plateau, eventually descending to the fjordside village of Fresvik. The hike is mainly downhill along a clear trail and by mid-afternoon you'll catch the first glimpse of Fresvik below, offering magnificent views across the Sognefjord. This evening, you'll pitch your tent right on the shore of the fjord – an incredible spot to celebrate the completion of the hiking section of the expedition. Kick back for a memorable evening around the campfire as the moonlight hits the calm waters that you'll be paddling out on to first thing tomorrow.
This evening also offers the opportunity to recharge cell phones or cameras. You will be reunited with your packed drybags for the kayaking section of the expedition and there is a chance to send back dirty hiking boots and clothes with your host's shuttle, so you don’t have to bring these along for the next two days of kayaking.
Day 5
Kayaking the fjords: Fresvik to Dyrdal
Kayaking4-5 hours · 12miWild campingTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Wake up in this fantastic spot, break down camp and prepare your kayak. You'll get full instructions from your guide, who will lead a briefing covering paddle technique, equipment use and adjustment, and general safety, before hitting the water. Launch into the fjord and get your first taste of gliding through the calm waters of the Norwegian Fjords. You'll paddle through the serene Sognefjord, taking in the epic scenery before reaching the entrance to the smaller Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site flanked by towering mountains and home to seals, porpoises and rare sea eagles. Paddle past Lægdafossen waterfall, offering a completely different perspective compared with seeing it from your hike previously. Late afternoon, you'll arrive at a suitable pull-out spot where you'll set up camp on the water's edge. Kick back and watch dinner being prepared on an open fire, which will keep you warm for another night of fjordside camping.
Day 6
Kayak to the finish line at Gudvangen
Kayaking4 - 5 hours · 7miBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
Wake up in the wild one last time – grab a refreshing swim in the fjords if you're brave enough! Hit the water again after breakfast, continuing your kayak journey through the majestic Nærøyfjord. Waterfalls are common, and you can witness the waters flow from summit to fjord, having visited the sources for these powerful waterfalls while hiking the highlands above. Continue kayaking south along the Nærøyfjord, exploring magnificent cliffs and remote cascades, keeping your eye out for seals and soaking up the last of your time on the water as you push on to the finish line. Mid-afternoon, you'll arrive back at the kayak base at Gudvangen, which marks the end of your expedition. There will be one last shift to unpack your gear and haul the kayaks onto trailers before bidding farewell to your amazing expedition guides. Your host will drive you back to Bergen Airport in time for any evening flights back to civilization.

What to Pack

Know before you go! Some stuff we'll provide, other things you'll need to bring.
FAQs
How do I pack for this expedition?
You're free to bring any luggage or suitcase you wish with you to Voss. On Day 2, you'll check out of your accommodation with all of your luggage and take a minivan to the host's kayaking base in Gudvangen. Here, you'll separate your items into what you will need for hiking, and what you need for kayaking. The remainder of your luggage (anything you don't need on the expedition) can be left at the kayaking base in Gudvangen, where it will be safely stored until your return.
For the kayaking, you will be given a 22-liter drybag to pack everything into for this part of the expedition (excluding a sleeping bag and sleeping mat, unless you bring your own). You will be given a hard waterproof case for your camera/phone too, and you'll want to keep certain things handy such as your water bottle, a cap, sunscreen and snacks. You'll need to pack light as your drybag has to fit into the hatched compartments (bulkheads) of your kayak, along with the group's food and equipment which will be shared among the kayaks. Don't stress! Your host will explain it all during the briefing.
Can I store my luggage somewhere?
Sure thing. On Day 2, you'll check out of your accommodation with all of your luggage and transfer to the host's kayaking base in Gudvangen. Here, you'll re-pack all your stuff, ready for the expedition (see 'How do I pack for this expedition?' above). The remainder of your luggage – anything that you don't need on the adventure itself – can be left behind at the kayaking base in Gudvangen, where it will be safely stored until your return.
What are the Norwegian Fjords?
One of the most beautiful places in the world. A fjord is a deep, narrow, and elongated part of the sea that stretches inland for miles, winding around mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs. The fjords were formed by the giant glacier tongues and shaped over several ice ages.
What kind of kayaks are used on this trip?
Most groups will have a mix of single and double kayaks. If you’d prefer a single, let your host know in advance – they will do their best to make it happen, but it can’t be guaranteed. They’ll need to balance kayak-to-guide safety ratios and juggle the fleet across multiple groups. If you start out in a double and fancy trying a single (or the other way around), have a chat with your fellow adventurers; someone might be up for a swap during the trip. If you're unsure about your paddling strength or confidence, sharing a double with a stronger member of the group can be a great idea.
Can I take the train from Bergen to Voss?
Absolutely. The train is 45 minutes faster than the included transfer and is one of the most spectacular journeys you can take by rail. Here’s how:
From the airport, get the Flybussen airport shuttle to Bergen bus station, or the Bybanen (city light rail – cheaper, but slower). Buses to/from the airport run every 10-15 minutes, and cost roughly 90NOK ($9) each way. The Bybanen is approx 40NOK ($4). From Bergen bus station, it’s just a few minutes walk to the train station. A taxi from the airport to the train station can be booked for between 350-550NOK ($35-$55), depending on traffic.
Trains run regularly throughout the day and don’t need to be reserved in advance, with a single ticket to Voss costing roughly 200NOK ($20). Trains to Oslo stop at Voss. You can buy tickets at the ticket office up until 5:30 PM, or from ticket machines. You can check the timetable or book ahead online.
Voss Hostel is a 12-minute walk from Voss train station. Head out of the main station and turn right on the road. Follow the road until just before the roundabout (about 2,461 ft) then take the left turning, following the road for 656 ft more – straight to the hostel.
For the return, make your life easy by jumping on the already included transfers to Bergen Airport.
Can you recommend accommodation in Voss or Bergen before or after the tour?
We can recommend the following, from budget to high-end. There are many other hotels, however these are selected for their convenience and/or from experience:
Accommodation in Voss
- Voss Hostel – great prices for individuals, couples or large groups.
- Voss Camping Cabins – ideal for small groups of 3 to 4.
- Store Ringheim Hotel – perfect for cozy traditional rooms and great food.
Accommodation in Bergen
- Montana Hostel – great prices for individuals, couples or large groups.
- Grand Terminus Hotel – older style, but right next to the train station.
- Thon Bristol Hotel – great central city location for sightseeing and nightlife.
- First Marin Hotel – also a great central city location for sightseeing and nightlife.
I'm considering bringing a drone, is this allowed?
Here’s what your local guide has to say on drones:
We do not really encourage bringing drones on this trip for several reasons:
- There are limited times where there would be opportunities for flying the drone.
- We need to keep the campsites free of drone traffic in agreement with the landowners.
- There is often livestock in some areas that may get affected and we need to maintain a good relationship with the farmers.
- We have seen some people being frustrated by drone traffic and can understand this.
Having said this, we do not prohibit drone use as it is out of our jurisdiction. As long as it does not interfere with the issues mentioned above and you can fit the drone in the kayak, it will be OK to bring it along. Just please discuss the use with other group members sometime after meeting up with them on the first morning to settle this.
I'm flying into Oslo, how do I get to the meeting point?
The best way to meet your host is to take the train from Oslo center to Voss (not Bergen), and then head to Voss Hostel. Voss Hostel is a 12-minute walk from Voss train station. Head out of the main station and turn right on the road. Follow the road until just before the roundabout (about 2,461 ft) then take the left turning, following the road for 656 ft more – straight to the hostel. The train journey takes about 6.5 hours and goes through some amazing scenery.
Can my dietary requirements be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form ASAP with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Food on this trip is simple, hearty, and prepared in an outdoor setting. Meals are designed to be practical and satisfying: lunches are simple and may include build-your-own wraps or sandwiches, or soup and bread. Dinners typically feature garlic bread, creamy pasta with vegetables, and grilled meats (sausage and pork chop). Breakfasts are varied (yogurt, bread, muesli, eggs, and pancakes). Guides are able to accommodate dietary needs (as outlined below) when informed in advance.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
Vegan Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
Kosher Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
Halal Halal diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
Lactose-free Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
ALLERGIES Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team before booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.
Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips typically consist of a mix of solo travelers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.
It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.
Don't just take our word for it:
- 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
- 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
- 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
See here for more info about the Much Better Adventures tribe.
What's the weather like?
The weather in summer is generally very comfortable for kayaking and camping, with temperatures of 59-68°F, sometimes more. April and May typically see the lowest rainfall, but days are cooler (typically 50-59°F) and nights usually hover a few degrees above freezing. Snow cover often persists on higher ground into April and May (and occasionally even early June), so is likely to be encountered along a significant portion of the hike. Your host has a stock of snowshoes if necessary. We recommend joining this trip in July and August for the warmest temperatures, but it’s great all throughout the summer.
In any month it can rain and get chilly at night so waterproofs, good hiking boots, a warm sweater and some thermals are vital. At this time of year, daylight in Norway is near constant with only 2–3 hours of darkness in the evenings.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 75kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
