Meet your guide in the hotel lobby at 8:00 AM and get ready to hit the road. Drive from Calgary to Moraine Lake, which sits within the impressive Valley of the Ten Peaks, where your first hiking trail begins in Banff National Park. The Sentinel Pass Trail climbs up through pine forest, with occasional viewpoints over the incredible turquoise waters of the glacial lake below and the jagged peaks that surround the valley, such as Mount Allen (10,860 ft). After emerging at a beautiful meadow with three alpine lakes, the trail winds its way beneath the flanks of Mount Temple (11,627 ft) up towards Sentinel Pass. Stop at the highest of the three lakes, Lake Minnestimma, from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains and rest up before beginning your descent back down to the trailhead at Moraine Lake. Then, head to the campground at nearby Lake Louise for a quick crash course in how to set up camp, and settle in for the evening.

If there is time and conditions allow for it, your guide may suggest pushing on for the top of Sentinel Pass (a further 650 ft above) for a glimpse down into Paradise Valley.

    Day 3

Starting from Lake Louise, today's off-the-beaten-path hike takes you up Fairview Mountain (9,000 ft), climbing almost 3,300 ft to find an astounding viewpoint at the summit. Be wowed by the views down on Lake Louise and out across the Banff National Park. The final 1-2 mi of the ascent involves a steep incline to reach the top. Stop off for a well-earned drink in Lake Louise, take a dip in the lake if you're feeling brave, or head straight back to the campground.

  2. Day 4

    Katherine Lake Trail

Explore another area of Banff National Park today. After a short drive north along the Icefields Parkway, one of the world's most scenic roads, you'll hit the trail at Bow Lake and climb up to Lake Helen through alpine wildflower meadows. Take in the stunning views of Crowfoot Glacier, Bow Lake and Cirque Peak along the route, as you continue on the trail to arrive at Lake Katherine. Cool off with a swim in Bow Lake after your hike if you like, then back to camp to rest before an evening out in Lake Louise.

    Day 5

Wilcox Pass Trail and the Icefields Parkway

Continue the drive along the Icefield Parkway. You'll stop at some classic viewpoints along the way, including Peyto Lake and the Athabasca Glacier. Stop at the trailhead for today's hike – the Wilcox Pass trail, at the southern end of Jasper National Park, this is a moderate hike to alpine meadows which reveals incredible views of the peaks and glaciers on the edge of the Columbia Icefield (if the trail is closed due to snow, you'll instead hike the Parker Ridge Trail or similar). Return to Lake Louise for your final night at this campground, before heading west tomorrow.

Today, you’ll head west to Canyon Hot Springs Resort and Campsite in Albert Canyon, your base for the next two nights, nestled between Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks. On the way (between Lake Louise and Golden), you’ll detour off Highway 1 to visit the dazzling Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park. After a few big days on the trail, today’s all about taking things a little easier. You can enjoy a gentle walk around the lake, the largest in the park, or, if you’re up for it, rent a classic Canadian canoe (approx. $100 CAD per hour) and paddle across its surreal, glacial-green waters. From there, you’ll cruise through the mountain town of Golden and over the dramatic Rogers Pass, flanked by towering peaks, before arriving at your next campsite. Dinner will be served back at camp this evening - feet up, stars out.

  4. Day 7

Eva Lake Trail and Revelstoke National Park

    Hiking
    4-6 hrs · 10mi · 1801ft up · 1801ft down

This morning, you’ll leave camp and head for Mount Revelstoke National Park. The day kicks off with a scenic drive to the summit of Mount Revelstoke (6,362ft), where sweeping views of the Columbia Valley set the tone nicely. From here, you’ll lace up your boots and hike the Eva Lake Trail – an out-and-back route through pine forests and past crystal-clear alpine lakes (ideal for a refreshing foot soak). After your hike, you’ll wind your way back down the mountain to the historic railroad town of Revelstoke for dinner at a local spot, before returning to camp for a well-earned rest under the stars.

Balu Pass Trail and Glacier National Park

Leaving Canyon Hot Springs behind this morning, you’ll head east once more through Rogers Pass and into another gem, Glacier National Park, where the spectacular Balu Pass hike awaits. This lesser-known trail winds through prime grizzly bear country, offering a wonderfully varied and scenic trek. There’s a decent challenge involved too, as you climb steadily to the high pass nestled between Cheops Mountain (8,000ft) and the aptly named Grizzly Mountain (8,957ft). Back at the trailhead, you’ll jump in the van for a 2.5-hour drive to the world-famous mountain town of Banff – your base for the final two nights. It’s a fitting end to the journey, with some of the most iconic views in the Rockies. Once the tents are pitched, dinner will be served back at camp.

    Day 9

    Cory Pass and Banff

    Hiking
    5-7 hrs · 11mi · 4341ft up · 4341ft down

For your last day of hiking in the Rockies you’ll tackle the Cory Pass Trail. This circular route around Mount Edith offers epic views of Mount Cory. It begins with a steep section as you head up through the forest, and once above the treeline you’ll be on more rocky terrain. This route includes a short section of scrambling, your guides will show you the way and by this point in the trip will understand everyone’s abilities well. After the rewarding challenge of today’s hike, grab a shower at camp, and then head into Banff this evening to celebrate an unforgettable adventure in the Rockies!

Trip level explained

Level 4

Moderate-Challenging

While in the Rockies you'll go above 8,200 ft altitude on multiple occasions, spending up to six hours per day walking on mountain trails with large elevation gains up to 4,900 ft. As you'll be hiking for consecutive days, fitness and endurance are important, and some preparation hikes in your boots with your pack on prior to the trip are strongly recommended.

The hiking is generally on non-technical terrain, but it can be steep in places with shorter rocky sections, scree and low-grade scrambling. The selected trails are generally 'there and back' day hikes. In the National Parks staying on-trail is important for habitat preservation, meaning that there is some flexibility for the guides to adjust the distance and pace based on the group and weather conditions to provide the best experience possible for everyone.

If you're looking to go hiking surrounded by big mountains, up for the challenges of the trail in return for the epic viewpoints you'll reach at the top and will enjoy hanging out at camp getting to know some new adventure buddies, then this trip is for you!

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you (you'll have a dedicated vehicle and trailer throughout the trip), and then a small daypack to carry personal items during each day of hiking.

High altitude (over 8,200 ft): factors to consider

This trip visits locations at or above 8,200ft, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group well-being, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatize can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Wildlife encounters: factors to consider

This trip takes place in environments where wild animals are present in their natural habitat, where protections and controls on their movement may be limited or non-existent. Some species may be dangerous, venomous, or unpredictable. Sightings are a privilege, but safety is key. Always follow your guide’s instructions and any posted signage.

We recommend considering your comfort around wildlife and discussing any concerns with your host before travel, particularly if you have allergies, phobias, or related health conditions.

Highly Remote Environments: Factors to Consider

This trip travels through very remote areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited and evacuation may take a significant amount of time. In some locations, medical facilities may provide only basic treatment, and further travel may be required to reach a hospital capable of providing more advanced care.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, evacuation may involve multiple stages and different forms of transportation before reaching appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may be unreliable for significant portions of this trip and communication may rely on satellite devices carried by your guides.

Your guides are trained and experienced in operating in remote environments and will manage the group carefully throughout the journey. However, due to the remoteness of these locations, access to external support may be limited and delays to medical care should be expected.

Before booking, consider your personal health and comfort traveling in locations where medical care and evacuation options may be limited or delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we strongly recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling. If you have a medical condition that may require rapid access to specialist care, regular monitoring, or emergency treatment, this type of remote travel may not be suitable without careful planning and medical advice.

Your travel insurance must cover the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation.

The hikes chosen for this trip are fantastic with picturesque viewpoints and lovely mountain lakes. The difficulty is accurately categorized and builds slowly throughout the trip; save for some downhill sections of Cory Pass, there are no truly demanding sections, and any active hikers can complete this trek without any issue. Our guides, MC and Celia, were outstanding - they accommodated all walking paces on the hikes, all dietary needs for the well-prepared meals, and transported us quite safely over hundreds of kilometers.

  • Sean G.

This was my third guided adventure trip, and the trip overall was very good. The guides MC and Celia were awesome. Only small areas I would recommend for improvement were some of the campgrounds had consistent train noise so ear plugs were required for sleeping, and the camping equipment was fairly limited (small tents, limited cooking equipment). Which I think limited the guides ability to cook as some of the meals were somewhat bland. There was an opportunity to purchase drinks and snacks on the way to some trailheads which was welcome and could be added to the optional expenses.

Choosing to experience the vast Canadian Rockies was hands down the best decision I made this year. đŸ”ïž Inspired by Cheryl Strayed’s novel Wild, I set out on this journey wanting a truly wild adventure. đŸŒČ The mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and forests I encountered—sharing spaces with bears, elk, marmots, and squirrels đŸ»đŸŠŒđŸżïžâ€”will undoubtedly become a source of great strength in my life. Although I wasn't hiking a trail like the PCT, this journey has given me the confidence to navigate any path life throws at me. ✹I had been feeling unwell since before the trip, but I refused to give up and felt incredibly happy to successfully complete the final Cory Pass hike. đŸ„ŸđŸ’Ș The joy of this journey would have been cut in half without the warm hospitality and delicious food provided by our beautiful guides, Marie-Christine and Celia, who led us the entire way. 👭đŸČ Camping abroad for the first time came with minor discomforts, but I know those will return to me tenfold as beautiful memories in the future. â›ș🌅I was also deeply happy to share this journey with such wonderful friends. đŸ€ I truly believe each of them will continue to live magnificent lives back in their own countries. If our paths ever cross again someday, I hope we can share a smile and look back on these memories together. 🙂 Thank you, everyone. 🙏✹

I've done quite a few trips with MBA and this was genuinely one of the best. Our guides, MC and Celia, were amazing, working so hard to ensure we had a great time, were well fed and got the most out of the trip. The hiking was slightly easier than I expected - I would say as long as you have a good level of hill fitness you will be fine, but like with any active trip, some dedicated training will help you to get the most out of it and enjoy it to the max. Cory Pass on the final day was one of my favourite mountain days to date! I appreciated the variety of food, especially for lunch - MC and Celia whipped up some hearty and filling salads for a few days so we weren't just stuck with sandwiches and other unhealthy options. It was also great to go into town a few times for dinner to experience the local area away from the trails. Dietary requirements were also well catered for. The campgrounds were beautiful with good facilities - never failed to get a clean hot shower which is all you really need! If you want 5* comfort whilst camping all the time, and not to get stuck in, maybe pick the hotel version of this trip! And of course, some of the people in the group made the trip even greater with memories that will last a lifetime!

Fantastic trip to the Canadian Rockies! Our hosts MC and CĂ©lia were excellent - good trail guides, clear plans, plenty of snacks and great cooks at camp. They adapted well to a mixed age and ability group. The weather was good and the views on the trails great. Walks were challenging in places, especially given altitude I’m not used to. The final day hike up Cory Pass was absolutely fantastic but definitely need to be fit and sure footed. We met no bears on the trail but did see some on the drives, as well as elk. We had a couple of changes of plan. Needed to stay at Johnston Canyon instead of Lake Louise due to capacity (fully booked/summer holidays) which was fine. Also couldn’t do the planned hike in Glacier NP due to closure from rock avalanche. Neither were a problem. A few tips for future travellers: - It’s full camping with one sleeping mat and sites are hard gravel so bring what you feel for comfort - There are plenty of mosquitos so bring lots of bug spray and long light clothing for the evening - Camp site facilities are as expected with a couple of showers in each block. Canyon Hot Springs needed 4x$1 coins for the showers or $10 for discounted entry to the main pool where there are showers too. - There are 2-4 power outlets in the shower/toilet blocks only. Bring power banks. The mini bus had some USB points which was handy on the drives for charging phones. - We had stops for shops at Canmore on the drive out, Lake Louise and Banff. Buy supplies for camp, gifts, etc when you see them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip, though at times it felt very grueling. The guides, MC and Celia were wonderful. Very patient and accommodating with us. They helped make this vacation what it was. I enjoyed the variety of the foods that was served and every effort was made to accommodate every body’s tastes and needs. I do think there were things that should have been told to us before hand, maybe in the What’s App group that was established before the actual vacation. Things like, we may have the option to use a laundry mid-week, and the cost of using the washer and dryer. Also, that we may have to pay for showers at an accommodation. I would have liked to have understood that we would be paying for 3 of our own dinners, that were considered “optional”, but mostly were not since we are going straight there from a hike. But all in all, it was a GREAT vacation. I loved every minute of it. Though I didn’t do the last hike, I was recommended a variety of things I could see and do in Banff, which made for a fantastic day. Thank you!

I have been on several guided hikes with other outfitters. I think I know what works and what can make a budget conscious trip successful. In all cases, the guides are dedicated, skilled and customer focused. Both MC and Celia were outstanding. Provided equipment and selected campgrounds could be improved for camping comfort. Two of the campgrounds had hard, stony gravel surfaces for tents, making a very painful surface to sleep and kneel on. The tent size was physically too small for adults. Canyon Hot Springs campground access to showers was both expensive and had a 15 -20 minute walk from campsite. Many hiking tour companies using equipment trailers provide cots as well. Food quality was disappointing, many pasta salads and no use of campfire Dutch oven offerings. Other companies provided standard lunch meals (sandwich, chips, cookie or fruit and canned drink). Besides coffee and tea, no other beverage offered. The coffee was made in single use French press? Why not have a multi-cup percolator. The cooked food was very bland and difficult to keep hot, tin foil and use of campfire grill should be utilized. This was my first trip utilizing community support for kitchen duties (washing dishes). Although I didn’t mind, I washed 4 times, which should have been twice if others in group all helped fairly. I applaud the schedule with some free time to explore on one’s own, unlike Backroads company rigid schedule. That free time was some of the best part of trip due to a break from hiking and seeing the surrounding area. It was a pleasure to eat at local restaurants as a group.

This mountain trip was an adventure from the first to the last day. Amazing! The group of 12 was a perfect size, and our guides Hubert and Alex were 100 %. Good drivers, they made really good meals and were always helpful and happy. And we saw 4 bears! If you are up for an adventure you will never forget, this is it!

My hiking trip through the Canadian Rockies was great. The scenery was breathtaking throughout, with spectacular mountain views and some truly memorable hikes. Our guides were outstanding—professional, well-organised, incredibly knowledgeable, and exceptionally hard-working. They kept everything running smoothly, shared fascinating insights about the area, and somehow still managed to prepare delicious meals for us at camp every day. Their enthusiasm and dedication made the experience even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for an unforgettable hiking adventure in one of the world's most beautiful landscapes.

  • Kimberley G.

Loved every minute! Incredible experience, incredible setting, and incredible guides! Hubert and Alex were fantastic, well organised, knowledgeable and encouraging. It was my first time joining a group holiday like this and it did not disappoint. People can make or break your experience and I definitely lucked out with my group! The itinerary didn’t always run as expected due to weather restrictions but the adjustments did not disappoint one bit - all down to our hard working guides H&A! This is an excellent way to explore the Canadien Rockies for the first time, I will never get over the feeling of being surrounded by mountains every day. It has definitely given me a taste for more adventure!

And of course, some of the people in the group made the trip even greater with memories that will last a lifetime!
  • Absolutely Fantastic

    Rebecca H. July 2026
  • Great Experience!

    Jeannette M. July 2026
Thank you!
  • Hiker and Camper Experience

    Wayne G. July 2026
  • Just amazing!

    Line K. July 2026
  • My hiking trip through the

    Vanessa D. July 2026
  • Loved it!

    Kimberley G. July 2026
  • Absolutely fantastic experience all round.

    Euan J. July 2026
Absolutely fantastic experience all round. The hikes and scenery I’ll remember forever. Made some great friends as everyone on the group got stuck in and gelled with each other from the start. The guides were fantastic especially coming up with alternative hikes based on weather/trail conditions. Would recommended this to everyone!
  • Awesome tour both guides were incredible

    Ryan I. July 2026
Both tour guides Alex & Hubert were exceptional could not have asked for better guides. So knowledgeable & helpful to ensure everyone’s needs & requirements were met! Would advise to change to itinerary for June/July as most trails are not available yet due to the weather. But both Alex & Hubert adapted to this & ensured we all had the greatest time. Along with an amazing group of camp mates 10/10 trip
  • Amazing trip with great people

    Robert D. July 2026
Alex and Hubert were fantastic from start to finish, very knowledgeable and good fun. It was great to see they were as enthusiastic about each individual hike and the outdoors as we were. Even when affected by snow on higher trails, we were able to do other great alternatives. Group dynamic was really good and it made for a very funny, enjoyable 8 days. Saw 4 Bears and some Elk, and got some amazing photo’s & memories. Overall trip was 10/10!
  • Trip of a lifetime!

    William M. June 2026
The trip was fantastic and a pace that both intermediate and expert hikers can enjoy! It was nice to be able to see multiple national parks, especially glacier which wound up being the most challenging and least crowded. Our weather app said it was going to rain the whole time but thankfully we never really got anything beyond a sprinkling. the weather was erratic though so if you're going in June pack for both hot and cold. And by cold I do mean snow hiking. I want to give a big shoutout to the food which was beyond expectations good! I joked with the group that if the hiking doesn't work out they could repackage this as a culinary experience.
  • First trip of the season

    Carolyn T. June 2026
Awesome trip but we didn’t get to do the walking that was on the itinerary due to snow and other track conditions. The adapted itinerary was satisfactory, still nice to be outdoors all day but not as satisfying as climbing up to or towards a pass. Still amazing great views. As a result, not nearly as physically taxing as expected.
  • Hubert and Alex

    Jane W. June 2026
The trip had great plans which unfortunately were adversely affected by weather and ground conditions. The guides provided excellent alternative options and the group were still exposed to magnificent scenery and hiking in the Canadian Rockies. The guides were safety conscious in the daily activities, choosing options appropriate to the group. The guides drove very well and carefully which made the transfers to and from camp much more enjoyable. The guides were environmentally conscious which suited my interests and very attentive to individuals dietary requirements which also helped make the trip extremely successful.
  • Epic Adventure!

    Sonia W. June 2026
I cannot recommend this trip more. This was my first trip with MBA and I am hooked. The value of what you get for the cost is astounding. Our guides, MC & Celia were absolute power-houses. They never skipped a beat, they worked tirelessly to make sure we were all having an amazing time and always had smiles on. They were also incredible cooks! All of the food was excellent. The June temps derailed some of the hikes but they chose new trails that were all spectacular. The views were always unreal. I will absolutely be booking more trips with MBA!
  • Incredible adventure!

    Jade G. June 2026
This trip was so amazing! Incredible walks, views, lakes, food. Our guides Alex and Hubert were the best, they made it so fun and took care of us the whole time. There was a lot more snow than expected in June but they tailored the walks to work for the group. I loved every minute.
  • Amazing trip!

    Eleanor D. June 2026
It was such a well organised and smoothly ran trip. Our guides, Hubert and Alex, were amazing at adjusting hikes when there were difficult trail conditions (snow etc) and made us feel so safe. The food provided was excellent and we had so much fun - would definitely recommend!
  • Wow

    Carmen H. June 2026
This was my first MBA trip and I was blown away. Plans changed a lot because of the weather but there was never a disappointment that came with it. The views were amazing, the guides were very accommodating, well informed about the area and its history. The food was great and the people were even better. I had a fantastic time.
  • Another great trip from MBA & 2 awesome guides đŸ€©

    Leigh M. June 2026
Everything about this trip was fabulous but the guides (Alex & Hubert) really make it exceptional. They worked non stop and the standard of the food they produced on camp equipment was outstanding. As this was the 1st trip of the season a few hikes weren’t possibly because of snow etc but they quickly found alternatives. The scenery is unbelievable and it was hard to believe it was actually real at times ! We even saw a couple of bears and other wildlife. I’ve done 8 MBA trips now and they just keep getting better. No other adventure travel company comes close to them for service, itinerary and included extras. Thanks again 😍😍😍
  • Amazing!

    Catherine R. September 2025
What an amazing trip – the Canadian landscapes were truly unforgettable and utterly gorgeous. Our guides Jessika and Florian were incredible – so hardworking, patient, knowledgeable, and brilliant cooks. Cannot praise them enough. For hikers used to walking in Britain’s national parks, I would say that the moderate categorisation of this trip does nudge into ‘challenging’, in my opinion. While the hikes may be moderate based on Canada’s classifications, the mountains and terrain dwarf the British landscape. I class myself as experienced, having hiked all over the world - I found the pace fast and the elevation gain significant. And you’re hiking solid for a week, alongside camping. It certainly didn’t detract from a truly rewarding trip, but it isn’t suited to someone expecting a leisurely hiking holiday. Walking poles a must if you need additional support.
  • Well rounded adventure

    Katie S. September 2025
Our guides were absolutely outstanding, even with the change of plans which were down to forest fires and unplanned road closures! Couldn’t fault them. The trip consisted of hikes and 2 driving days which were very nicely broken up with activities to go to which were very much to the groups liking. The guides were very flexible with us as a group, based on what everyone wants to do with their last two days considering the changes of plans. Only thing I would say is I would say it’s a moderate hiking trip with all the planned hikes - unfortunately the more advanced hikes that would say make this hiking trip a moderate trip had to be cancelled due to forest fires and road closures, which isn’t the end of the world, but I’d say for this trip you need to be capable of hiking an average mountain elevation gain of 600-1000 meters, 4 days back to back. Only negative thing I’d say about this trip is the group got split due to capabilities, and other peoples different understanding of what moderate difficulty means. But the guides were really understanding of that and gave hikers possibility to do another hike or do their own thing that day if they didn’t feel up to it. Bonus - the guides made brilliant food and catered for gluten free too.
  • Excellent trip even better guides.

    Simon D. September 2025
It's hard to know where to start when reviewing this trip. The rockies didn't disappoint in any way. Everywhere you looked was like a postcard, such beauty. The hikes were challenging for my fitness level but the scenery carried you through the tougher climbs. We were so lucky with the weather it was sunny and dry all trip apart from the last night when canada treated us to a massive thunderstorm over night which was a great experience in the tent. Now onto the guides. We struck gold with Florian and Jessika, you could have asked for kinder funnier or more well organized people. So hard working but making it look effortless at the same time. They cooked us some incredible food. The trip was so well organized and camping made a doddle. I can't thank those two wonderful people enough.
  • Fantastic trip and guides and organization

    Harshavardhan R. August 2025
Had a fantastic trip guided by Jessica and Florian who were incredible. Very well organized with high-quality (and challenging) hikes, great food, amazing scenery, comfortable campsites and good company.
  • Amazing Experience

    Christina C. August 2025
Booking this trip, I was a bit skeptical about my stamina for hiking and camping for 9 days. I am so grateful I took the leap because this holiday was one of the best trips I’ve ever been on. Jess and Florian kept us laughing, well-fed, and informed the whole week. They were beyond accommodating and kind to everyone in our group. The hikes were beautiful and designed so that we worked hard a few days but then had some easier days to rest. This style of traveling allows for group bonding and friendships to flourish. I can’t recommend this trip enough!
  • Fantastic trip

    Jonathan V. August 2025
Just finished the Hiking in the Canadian Rockies trip. Can honestly say it's been the trip of a lifetime. Our guides, Jessika and Florian were absolutely superb and worked so hard to make sure all members of the group were happy. Great hikes which were arranged so we weren't too tired on any given days. Great camp cooking with quality and Di ease breakfast and dinners. Great packed lunches and snacks for the trail. Would highly recommend
  • Canada Hiking August 2025

    Jason C. August 2025
Fanny and Florian did an outstanding job keeping everyone on schedule, taking us on hikes and keeping us all fed. This was a great vacation.
  • Challenging but worth the effort!

    Sandra K. August 2025
This trip really pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I probably underestimated how challenging the hikes would be. Although advertised as moderate, some of the elevation gains felt more demanding. Thankfully, our guides, Fanny and Florian, were fantastic—supportive and patient, letting me go at my own pace. I'm was not as fit as I probably need to be, but I still managed to complete the hikes. The scenery was absolutely stunning, even with the unusually wet weather for Alberta at this time of year. MBA could improve by giving more accurate hike details, especially elevation gains. Including elevation profiles or GPX files would help set clearer expectations. Overall, it was a great experience. With a few improvements, it could be even better. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a rewarding challenge in the beautiful Canadian Rockies.
  • Great scenery and opportunity to explore some of the Rockies

    Jess H. August 2025
This is a well planned and fun trip. The Rockies are a stunning area, and the hikes are beautiful. There's a nice range too, with some summits and some flatter ones. It's quite intensive, and if the weather is cold, then it's a lot of time camping and dealing with wet clothes and boots. We had a brilliant group, and this for me really made the the trip, as well as seeing a black bear wandering throughout campsite. All the campsites are great, campsite 2 was particularly nice. Tips: Poles are useful - I don't usually use them but found them useful on this trip. Sign up to Alltrails so you can get the hike info yourself, as the guides didn't have that much info on them. In the campsites we went to, there were places to charge in the bathrooms. Waterproofs and thermals if the weather turns are essential.

FAQs

Should weather conditions mean that particular trails are either closed or not recommended, then the local guide will adjust the itinerary to try and offer a similar alternative, maintaining group safety as paramount and re-working the order of the itinerary if necessary.

For example: several of the trekking trails are not guaranteed to open in June, they could be closed until July depending on snow levels in the mountains. In this case, the guide will arrange for an alternative trek within the national parks.

Also, poor air quality can be an issue during periods of wildfire activity, which is increasingly common across North America from mid to late summer, often resulting in hazy skies and at worst severely limiting outdoor activities. Your guides will follow the official guidance from the local authorities on how best to manage this within the national parks.

Yes, bring your swimsuit and a towel! The water will be cold, largely glacial-fed lakes, but throughout the trip you'll have opportunities for taking a dip in different mountain lakes, such as: Herbert Lake, Lake Louise, Bow Lake, and Eva Lake.

There will also be the option to rent a canoe locally at Emerald Lake on Day 6, subject to availability and weather conditions. The cost is approx. $100 CAD per hour for a Canadian canoe that typically can be shared between 1-3 people.

During this trip, you'll be camping in locations where wildlife may be present in their natural habitat. Both smaller animals (i.e. birds and rodents) and larger ones (such as bears, deer, moose, and elk) are primarily attracted to food, not humans. To protect the local wildlife, you need to ensure your food is kept out of their reach. When camping, the key is to be vigilant about not leaving any food or scented items (like toothpaste and other toiletries) in tents or exposed at the campsite. Your guides will typically designate a safe place to store these items overnight away from the tents, which campers can access if needed. Occasionally a larger animal may pass through or near your campsite, especially in areas that overlap with their natural travel routes. In these cases, just like when encountering wildlife on the trail, it's important to maintain a safe distance, respect the animal's space, and calmly make your presence known if necessary. Your guides will provide more details and directives once at camp so everyone can follow best practices camping and do their bit to help keep wild animals wild.

Drinking water is available at the campgrounds and other points during the hiking days. You will need to carry your own water supply in a daypack throughout the hikes. If you are interested in using a water filter, then you may wish to read our guide here.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

While camping, your guide will rustle up nutritious and varied meals. As it is participatory camping, your help prepping, cooking and washing up afterward will be appreciated by the guide! Breakfasts are served buffet style each day with varying items, allowing for a quick start before getting out on the trails, and typically include hot drinks, fruit juice, bread, croissants, cereal, granola, yogurt, and fruit. Lunches will be cold picnics, prepared earlier so that you can carry them with you and stop somewhere during the hikes. These usually involve wraps, sandwiches, salads, cereal bars, and fruit. For dinners, the guide will plan an appetizer, main, and dessert. The main dish is typically meat or fish with sides of rice or potatoes and vegetables. Some nights they may make a pasta or curry dish.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian

Vegetarians can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Vegan

Vegans can’t be fully catered for on this trip, due to the limited cooking facilities in the camp kitchen and a lack of available vegan produce in the destination.

Kosher

Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian options can often be the most reliable alternative.

Halal

Certified Halal supply varies by destination and may not always be possible. Vegetarian options can often be the most reliable alternative.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free

Gluten Free diet can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. A supplementary fee may be payable locally for the purchase of additional cost of specific Gluten-free products. Please note: Coeliacs cannot be catered for on this trip, due to the possible risk of cross-contamination.

However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion, but there is an expectation in North America to tip for good service. Your host can help with advice – however, we suggest $8-10CAD per person, per day for your main guide.

It is customary in Canada to tip service workers such as taxi drivers and waiters at around 15%, depending on the quality of the service you receive. A good rule of thumb for any visits to bars is to tip $1 per drink. Tipping culture in North America can be a little intimidating to anyone without previous experience of travelling or living there, however, your host will be happy to help you through the process anytime it comes up on the trip.

No, since the trip doesn't return to the starting hotel, it's not possible to leave excess luggage there unless you have booked an additional night post-trip at the same hotel.

The summer season for hiking in the Canadian Rockies spans from mid-June to mid-September. The peak summer months of July and August are the hottest, with temperatures typically sitting between 68-77°F during the daytime but above 86°F is increasingly common. June and September are cooler, with typical daytime temperatures in the mid-60s. Temperatures drop considerably at nighttime (to around 41°F, and lower in June and September), and of course, you should expect to encounter cooler climates when trekking to higher elevations. It is possible that during the early summer dates that there will still be snow cover on some of the trails.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 152kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
