Day 1
Welcome to Vietnam!

Touch down at the airport and meet your host for your transfer to your first boutique hotel in the heart of Hanoi. The city is immediately striking: a dense tangle of scooters, street food stalls, and colonial architecture that somehow works. Depending on when you arrive, head out to explore the Old Quarter or grab a cold bia hoi at the famous beer corner. In the evening, gather with your guide and group for a welcome dinner to sample classic Vietnamese dishes and hear what's in store for the week ahead.
Day 2
Cruise and kayak the stunning Lan Ha Bay

Head out with your guide this morning to explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter, watching the city wake and build to its daily hustle and bustle, before stopping for a classic breakfast of pho noodles and egg coffee. Then it’s time to bid the capital farewell and head for the coast, driving to Tuan Chau, an island on the southwest side of the legendary Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Step aboard your floating home for the night, a hand-crafted junk-style boat that blends traditional character with modern comforts. As the sails catch the breeze, you’ll drift into a dreamscape of emerald water, scattered islands and sheer limestone cliffs. Tuck into a freshly prepared seafood lunch on deck, then set out to explore a hidden cave, hopping into a kayak to paddle through calm waters surrounded by limestone cliffs. The late afternoon is yours to relax on deck or plunge into the bay for a swim. As the sun sets, enjoy a candlelit seafood dinner before falling asleep in your cozy cabin to the gentle sounds of the water.
Day 3
Kayaks, jungle & Cat Ba Island

The morning starts on the water with an hour of kayaking through the Tra Bau area, the stretch of Lan Ha Bay that served as a filming location for Kong: Skull Island in 2018. It gives you a sense of just how dramatic this landscape is. From Gia Luan port, the day shifts gear. You head into Cat Ba National Park for a 2.5-hour hike, with forest paths giving way to stone steps as you climb to the summit of Ngu Lam Peak for sweeping views over the islands and bay below. The descent takes you through Trung Trang Cave, its stalactites and vast chambers a sharp contrast to the jungle above. By late afternoon, you're at your hotel on Cat Ba, with its sky bar a natural first stop for sunset views before a seafood dinner on a floating restaurant out on the water.
Day 4
Journey from Cat Ba to Phong Nha
Cycling1hrSailing3hrsDriving2.5hrsTrain CarriageMulti shareAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
This morning is unhurried with a cruise out to Viet Hai Village, a small and largely car-free settlement tucked into Cat Ba Island. Disembark for an hour's bike ride through the surrounding countryside, a quiet contrast to the dramatic scenery of the past two days. Back on the boat, the afternoon is spent drifting through the bay with one last stop for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking or a swim in the calm water. In the afternoon, bid farewell to Cat Ba and drive back to Hanoi, arriving at the station for your evening sleeper train south. Traveling by night train is a quintessential Southeast Asian experience; settle into your four-berth cabin for the 10-hour journey with fellow members from your group and watch the city lights fade into the countryside, before drifting off to sleep.
Day 5
Kayak through Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Wake up as the train rolls into Dong Hoi in the early morning light, transferring to Phong Nha for breakfast and a chance to freshen up before the day begins in earnest. This morning, you'll take to the Son River for a kayaking adventure, paddling deeper into the national park as limestone karsts rise dramatically from the water around you. Drift past the villages of Me and Chay, past striking rock formations and jungle-draped riverbanks, with time to step ashore and explore along the way. Back on dry land, you'll transfer to your Standout Stay of the trip: the Blue Diamond Retreat, tucked into a lush pocket of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Take the afternoon to recharge, explore the surroundings at your own pace and soak up the stillness of the jungle. As dusk falls, the river comes alive in a different way. Pull on a headlamp and head back out onto the water for a torchlit night kayaking session right on the doorstep – one of those quietly unforgettable moments that this part of Vietnam does better than anywhere.

Deep jungle and a night under the stars

The wildest section of your trip begins this morning as you head into the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park – a world of jungle, cliffs, caves, and underground rivers. Hike through the forest to reach Elephant Cave, one of the lesser-visited and more dramatic caverns in the national park, with vast chambers carved out over millions of years. By headlamp, you’ll explore its ancient rock formations before returning to daylight and continuing your hike through the jungle, crossing rivers and descending into the Ma Da Valley. Arriving at Ma Da Lake, cool off with a refreshing swim in its clear blue waters while your guides set up camp on the sandy bank. As night falls, tuck into a barbecue dinner and settle into your tent beneath the stars, with the sounds of the jungle all around.

Wake up with a morning swim, you'll have the lake and jungle all to yourselves. After breakfast at camp, head back onto the trail, cutting through dense foliage and watercourses until you reach a bend in the river that marks the scramble up limestone rocks to Tra Ang Cave. Take the plunge and swim its 2,000ft passage, then explore further on foot. Pause for lunch in this remote wilderness before hiking the Tra Ang River Trail back towards civilization. After your days in the national park, return to Blue Diamond for hot showers and a Vietnamese-style barbecue dinner. Enjoy a relaxed evening here, recharging after an unforgettable couple of days.
Day 8
One last ride, then the ocean!

Swap the saddle for one last bike ride through the Vietnamese countryside this morning – a cycling route that winds past sleepy villages, through a bustling local market and along quiet roads that follow the river at their own unhurried pace. Lunch is at a favorite local spot before you hand back the bikes. From here, jump in the vehicle for a scenic drive to Thach Ha District, where your beachside resort sits right on the South China Sea. The rest of the day is entirely yours to swim in the sea, stretch out on the sand, or order a sundowner as the sun drops below the horizon. After the jungle, the caves and the early starts, you've earned this chance to relax.
Day 9
A slow farewell and the long road north
Driving6hrsHotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 9 detailHide detail
Savor a slow final morning at the beach – a last swim, a long Vietnamese coffee, or perhaps a walk along the sand. After breakfast, it's time to head back north. The drive back to Hanoi is a long one, but it will be broken up with scenic stops and a lunch stop en route, with the Vietnamese countryside rolling past the windows as the trip's highlights play back in your mind. Back in Hanoi by late afternoon, you'll return to the boutique hotel where it all began. This evening, gather with your guides and fellow travelers for a farewell dinner. A chance to raise a glass, swap favorite moments and celebrate the journey you've shared over the past ten days.

What's not included
Our trips do not include flights, trains or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.
Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion and your main guide will assist if you prefer to set up a tipping kitty for the entire trip.
We suggest the following guidelines (approximately $120-150 (USD) total) to help you budget:
- Local guide: tipping your trip leader is a personal gesture and entirely at your discretion. We recommend around $90 per person as a standard thank you for exceptional service throughout the entire itinerary
- Local activity guides: we recommend tipping your guides directly, between $5-10 per person, per day
- Support vehicle: $1-2 per person per day would be considered a reasonable tip
- Restaurants: 10% of the bill
Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional food and drinks, shopping and laundry.
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate coverage for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and gear, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment coverage, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer coverage for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

FAQs
Can my dietary requirements be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
What do I do about drinking water?
Tap water in Vietnam is not safe to drink, but clean drinking water will be provided. Please pack your own reusable bottle, it’ll come in handy. While on the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park cave hike, there may be opportunities to refill your bottle from streams, so we recommend packing water purification tablets.
Water bottles with built-in filters are becoming increasingly popular for travelers to use in countries without clean tap water. Please see our guide for advice on the best water filters for adventurers if you wish to bring your own filtration bottle on this trip.
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
You'll have one main guide for the entirety of the trip. Throughout the adventure, specialist local guides will join for many of the activities to offer expert insight into the places you're exploring: specialist jungle hiking and caving guides in the Ma Da Valley, kayaking guides in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and guided kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and cycling outings during the boat excursion in Lan Ha Bay and on Cat Ba Island.
What type of kayaks are used?
The kayaks throughout the itinerary will be single or double kayaks, either sit-on-top or touring kayaks. Sit-on-top kayaks are very stable and easy to paddle for everyone, including new paddlers through to experienced paddlers. Sit-on-top kayaks can be used on the sea, estuaries, rivers, lakes, and canals. Touring kayaks are designed to be stable on the water, comfortable to sit in, easy to get into, and cater to all paddling abilities from a complete novice to an experienced paddler.
The SUPs will be inflatable and the brand of board will be either Touring or Alaround.
Can I leave my excess baggage somewhere?
If you wish to, you can leave excess luggage at the hotel in Hanoi, to be collected upon your return to the same hotel at the end of your trip. On Day 6, you will be heading to Ma Da Valley for one night camping and then returning to Blue Diamond Retreat. You will therefore leave your main luggage at Blue Diamond Retreat, taking only an overnight bag with you.
You will need to maneuver your bag on and off the overnight train, so please consider this when choosing luggage for this trip: ensure you bring something you can carry comfortably.
What if things don't go to plan?
Your host is an expert in all things Vietnam, specializing in itineraries across the country and running trips in the region for many years. If weather or other factors affect the ability to visit a particular place or carry out a specific activity, your host will have plenty of alternative options available.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

What's the weather like?
Hanoi has four distinct seasons. Winter (December–February) is cool and occasionally misty, with daytime temperatures of 64–73°F. Spring (March–April) is warmer at 73–81°F. Summer (May–August) is hot and wet, regularly hitting 91°F with short, heavy downpours. Fall (September–November) brings cooling temperatures and the tail end of the rainy season. Central Vietnam (Halong Bay, Cat Ba and Phong Nha) runs on a different rhythm. Temperatures range from 72°F in January to 91°F in June, but the rainy season here falls between August and November – the opposite of Hanoi. The dry season (February–July) is the best time for caves and jungle trekking, though June and July can be intensely hot and humid. Inside the caves themselves, it's a cool and stable 68°F year-round.
This trip therefore runs departures from January through December, carefully scheduled to avoid both the typical storm season in August and the Tet holiday period, when domestic travel is at its busiest and many local businesses close. March to May tends to offer the most comfortable all-around weather across both regions. Whatever the time of year, pack light breathable layers, a rain jacket, sun protection, and insect repellent.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 388kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
