Your adventure begins at the airport in Venice, where your guide meets you on arrival. Once you've touched down, settle in for the journey north: a scenic drive that trades the flat Veneto plain for the jagged limestone spires of the Dolomites. You'll arrive in Sesto, a small Tyrolean village tucked beneath the Sesto Dolomites in the Val Fiscalina, in time to check into your Standout Stay for the week: an award-winning, 4-star hotel built in an Alpine style from local stone, with two pools, several saunas and mountain views close enough to touch. Take some time to settle in and explore the facilities (check the FAQs (opens in new tab) for the full rundown of everything on offer, you'll be spoiled for choice!) before tucking into a welcome dinner at the hotel tonight – the first of many four-course, regional, organic dishes meals – and take the chance to get to know your guide and fellow hikers before your first day on the trails tomorrow.

From your hotel, it's a short walk to Bad Moos, where a cable car lifts you up to Prati di Croda Rossa at around 6,400ft. Step out into open alpine meadows beneath the dramatic rock walls of Croda Rossa and the wider Sesto Dolomites, then follow the trail through meadows and larch forest, with the views opening out across the surrounding peaks and valleys as you hike. This is a landscape shaped by the First World War, and you'll pass old military positions, tunnels, and other remnants along the way. Continue across high slopes beneath the rugged Croda Rossa massif and Pala di Popera, with sweeping views towards the Carnic Ridge, before descending to the valley, the Dolomites' jagged skyline as your backdrop the whole way. It's a relatively easy day given the limited ascent, but the scenery makes for the perfect introduction to the landscape you'll be exploring all week. There'll be time for a relaxed, late lunch at a handpicked, high-quality mountain hut, before you return back to the hotel on foot, with time to enjoy the pool and saunas before dinner at the hotel.

After breakfast, settle in for a private transfer to Prato Piazza (6,529ft), a wide alpine plateau ringed by meadows and wildflowers. From here you'll begin a short loop hike up to Monte Specie, also known as Strudelkopf, a 7,569ft summit with sweeping views over Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Monte Piana, and Monte Cristallo. On clear days, this is one of the finest vantage points in the Dolomites, and your first proper look at the Tre Cime themselves—a taster of the close-up you'll get beneath them on your final day. Once you're back down, hop on a short public bus transfer to Dobbiaco, where you'll swap peaks for water on an optional gentle walk around the lake, its still surface reflecting the mountains and surrounding pine forest. If you prefer to take it easy, you can simply relax by its shores or enjoy a drink at the local cafe before a private transfer collects the group and takes you back to the hotel. There may be time for a quick dip in the pool or sauna before dinner – your muscles will thank you.

Today's hike is a loop straight from your doorstep, climbing into the Via delle Malghe with the jagged Sesto Meridians filling the skyline the whole way around. You'll pass a few malghe, traditional mountain huts that still operate from June to September, when herders bring livestock up to graze on fresher, higher pasture. Many double as small dairies, producing butter, ricotta, and mountain cheese from the day's milk, and most welcome hikers in for a coffee or a plate of local cheese. Stop for a picnic lunch along the route, with the high pastures and forest as your backdrop, before the trail loops back past the Patzenfeld campsite to the hotel. It's a scenic day where you'll feel properly immersed in peaceful pastureland and nature – a trail not usually trodden by many hikers, which remains truly authentic. Depending on the group's pace and fitness, your guide may offer to extend the loop by a few miles and offer a longer variant. Once you're back, there's time to make the most of the pools and saunas, perhaps book a massage or spa treatment for the afternoon, or simply relax before dinner. On Wednesdays, the pool stays open late, so there's also the chance of a night swim after dinner.

After yesterday's longer day, today is intentionally gentle, giving you a relaxed later start before an easy loop hike to the summit of Monte Elmo. A cable car whisks you up to the Helm mountain station at 6,700ft, where a scenic path crosses open meadows to the Hahnspielhütte (Rifugio Gallo Cedrone), a mountain hut perched right on the panoramic ridge. From here, continue on to the summit, known locally as Helm, at 7,985ft: the westernmost peak on the Carnic Alps' 87-mile ridge, which has marked the border between Italy and Austria for the best part of a century, and was once a route for smugglers slipping between the two. On a clear day, the 360-degree panorama takes in the central Alps to the north and wave after wave of Dolomite peaks to the south. The loop drops back past the Hahnspielhütte to the cable car station, and since this is only a half-day hike, you're back at the hotel by early afternoon, free to enjoy the pool and sauna or wander around Sesto. Make the most of the rest today: tomorrow brings the steepest, most rewarding climb of the trip.

After an early breakfast, take a short private transfer from the hotel to Val Fiscalina, the starting point for one of the Dolomites' most spectacular hikes. Today's route follows a quieter and more rewarding alternative to the crowded Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop, allowing you to enjoy outstanding views of these iconic peaks while avoiding the busiest sections. The trail begins gently through forest and meadows at the foot of the Sesto Dolomites. As you ascend more steeply (with around 2-3 hours of continuous climbing), the trees thin out, revealing ever-expanding panoramas of rugged peaks – Croda dei Toni, Cima Undici and Monte Popera forming an unforgettable amphitheater of Dolomitic rock around you. The route traverses below the northern face of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo by Rifugio Locatelli, bringing you up close to this unmistakable symbol of the Dolomites. You'll stop to enjoy a picnic lunch with this world-famous view before beginning your long descent towards Val di Landro, where the route ends at Lake Landro. Today is the longest and most tiring day of hiking, but the rewards are immense: varied terrain, dramatic scenery at every turn, and a full immersion in one of the most breathtaking corners of the Dolomites. Back at the hotel, round off the week with a farewell dinner and a toast to an epic week in the Dolomites.

Transfers

On Day 1, your driver meets you at Venice Marco Polo Airport at around 2:00 PM (please aim to land by 1:00 PM at the latest, to allow time for baggage collection and customs). Your host will confirm the exact meeting time before departure, based on the group's incoming flights. From the airport, a private minibus takes you to Sesto, a beautiful alpine valley at the foot of the Croda Rossa group, a journey of around 2.5-3 hours with a short refreshment stop en route. On Day 7, you're transferred back to Venice Marco Polo Airport, usually arriving by 12:30 PM, though this can vary with traffic, so please avoid booking flights departing before 2:30 PM to allow a comfortable connection.

Alternative transfers between Venice and the Dolomites are expensive, and public transport connections are limited, so it's worth building in plenty of time between your flight landing and the 2:00 PM departure: the group vehicle can't wait long beyond this. If you do hit a major delay, the best option is an official taxi from the airport, available just outside the arrivals terminal or via the 24-hour service on +39 041 5964, costing around €300-350 one way (confirm the fare with the driver before setting off). Please let your host know as soon as possible if your flight is delayed.

If your schedule allows, it's worth spending a few hours in Venice before or after your adventure. There's luggage storage at the airport, and a shuttle bus connects the airport to Piazzale Roma in around 20 minutes (about €20 return), an easy way to fit in some time in the city either side of the mountains.

Travel options

Venice Marco Polo Airport is accessible via various direct flights from the UK and mainland Europe. From the US, there are also seasonal direct flights available – including United Airlines from Washington Dulles, Delta from New York JFK and Atlanta, and American Airlines from Philadelphia and Dallas-Fort Worth. Outside of these seasonal routes, flights from the US will generally connect through hubs such as Madrid, London or Frankfurt.

For those who wish to avoid flying, Venezia Mestre is well connected with high-speed trains from London, via Paris. The journey will take an average of 21 hours and usually involves two changes.

Given the trip begins with an afternoon transfer from Venice Airport, you might consider arriving the day before and taking the opportunity to visit the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage City of canals, art and romance. When visiting Venice, check first if you are required to pay the Venice Access Fee (opens in new tab) (applicable to some dates only).

Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

Most days on this trip are easy to moderate, or solidly moderate at most, with one exception: Day 6’s hike beneath the Tre Cime di Lavaredo to Lake Landro is the longest and most challenging hike of the week, with approximately 3,280ft of ascent and descent over 10 miles. It’s a rewarding route that gives you the chance to experience the spectacular Tre Cime without the traffic and big crowds of the classic loop.

Most days also leave time to enjoy the hotel’s pools, saunas, and spa after your hike, while the shorter half-day walks are deliberately designed to give you even more time to relax and indulge. It’s a carefully balanced week of spectacular hiking and alpine luxury, with time to enjoy both the mountains and the exceptional hotel.

Across the week, you’ll cover 4–10 miles per day at altitudes of up to 7,990ft, on terrain ranging from forest paths and open meadows to rocky ridgelines. Trails are generally well maintained throughout, but some sections require sure-footedness and include short exposed stretches, though nothing too severe. If you suffer from vertigo, it’s worth speaking to your host before booking, as every trail in the Dolomites comes with some degree of open views and exposure.

You’ll hike for an average of 4–6 hours a day in a high-alpine environment, so a good level of fitness and some previous hiking experience are recommended to enjoy the trip fully and safely. Your experienced local guide, who knows these trails well, will set a steady and supportive pace for the whole group.

If you’re not used to multiple consecutive days of mountain hiking, some advance preparation will help. Regular hill walks, stair climbs, or a mix of strength and cardio training will build the endurance and confidence you need.

What if i need to skip an activity?

This itinerary is designed as an immersive hiking experience, and we strongly encourage everyone to take part in the daily hikes – they’re the heart of the adventure and suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. However, if you’re feeling tired or need a lighter day, you can usually stay at the hotel and enjoy some downtime instead. Your guide will always brief the group on the next day’s route, so you can decide whether to join or rest. Please note that if you choose to skip an activity, any additional transfers or meals would be at your own expense, though your host can help advise on local arrangements.

What will I need to carry?

During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal backpack with your essential items for the day; you can leave your main luggage at your hotel.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Stay

Standout Stay: A beautiful Alpine spa retreat

Your base for the entire trip is the award-winning Berghotel, a 4-star spa retreat. Sitting in a wonderfully peaceful spot above Sesto at 4,501ft, it's surrounded by meadows, forests, and the spectacular peaks of the Dolomites. This is a hotel where the mountains really are on the doorstep: many of your hikes can start directly from the hotel, with no daily transfers needed. You'll stay in a 300–375ft² twin room, with a warm Alpine style of natural wood and stone, a seating area, modern bathroom, WiFi, fridge, and safe, plus a private balcony overlooking the mountains. Twin-share lodging is provided by default, but couples can request double beds. Please note that the rooms do not have air conditioning.

Then there’s the extraordinary wellness area. Swim in the indoor panoramic pool or heated outdoor pool, soak in the whirlpools or, in summer, take a dip in the natural bathing pond. The real magic is the setting: from the water, you can look straight across at the peaks of the Sesto Dolomites. On Wednesday evenings, the pools stay open until 10:00 PM, so you can even swim beneath the stars. The sauna experience is equally impressive, with seven different saunas, including a panoramic outdoor sauna beside the pond, herbal and hay saunas, a Turkish steam bath, and a Finnish sauna. Afterwards, you can stretch out on a waterbed, hanging bed, or in the Room of Silence, or retreat to the quiet garden for some genuinely peaceful downtime. There’s also a fitness room and the Zirm Spa for massages and beauty treatments (available as extras, payable locally).

The whole hotel has a strong sense of place, combining mountain materials, contemporary Alpine design, and traditional communal areas, while sustainability is built into how it operates. Renewable hydropower, biomass heating, and solar energy, local and seasonal food, water-saving measures, and careful energy management all form part of the hotel's approach. With its combination of direct mountain access, spectacular wellness facilities, and exceptional food, the Berghotel is much more than a base for your hikes – it’s part of the experience itself.

Food and Dietary info

Start each day with a generous breakfast at the Berghotel, where you’ll be spoiled for choice at the extensive buffet. Expect freshly baked local bread, homemade muesli and jams, seasonal fruit, mountain honey, regional cheeses and charcuterie, fresh juices and plenty of hot options, including eggs and omelets prepared to order. In the afternoon, return from the mountains to homemade cakes and the Berghotel’s famous apple strudel, served from 3:00–5:00 PM with tea and coffee.

Two picnic lunches are included, prepared with fresh, regional ingredients and made for enjoying out on the trail. On days when lunch isn’t included, your leader will recommend a local spot along the trail or at the end of your hike, giving you the freedom to choose whatever you fancy, whatever your taste or budget.

Six dinners are included at the Berghotel, where Mediterranean influences meet traditional South Tyrolean flavors. The kitchen focuses on seasonal, organic and locally sourced produce, with around 90% of its food coming from South Tyrol and Italy. Expect dishes such as organic pumpkin cream with bacon, mushroom roulade with hay-grappa sauce, homemade pasta with local cheese, or veal with black truffle crust, alongside fresh salads, antipasti, soups and seasonal vegetables. Desserts might include a rosemary creme brulee, while local cheeses and homemade chutneys round things off. Every day dinner starts with a buffet of salads, soups and antipasti, followed by three choices of first course and three main courses, all served at the table, before a fixed dessert. Many of the hotel’s products are made in-house, including jams, chutneys, pesto, flavored oils and preserves, adding to the distinctly local feel of the cuisine.

Drinks are not included with meals, but the hotel takes its drinks just as seriously as its food. At the restaurant and Bar 68, you’ll find more than 300 wines, available by the glass or bottle, many from South Tyrol. For a nightcap, choose from South Tyrolean fruit schnapps, grappa, whiskey or rum – or try the hotel’s signature Marmolada, made with South Tyrolean organic vodka, elderflower syrup and herbal tonic.

FAQs

The trip is based in Sexten (Sesto), a beautiful mountain village in the eastern Dolomites of South Tyrol, surrounded by meadows, forests, and some of the region’s most spectacular peaks. It’s an excellent base for exploring the Tre Cime, Val Fiscalina, and the wider Dolomites, while retaining the character of a traditional Alpine village. The hotel is set in a peaceful location just outside the village center, with mountain views and hiking trails accessible directly from the door. When you’re not hiking, you can walk into Sexten to browse local shops, stop for a coffee, or explore the village.

You’ll stay throughout at the 4-star Berghotel, a beautiful family-run hotel in a peaceful panoramic setting, surrounded by meadows and woodland in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Dolomites. The hotel combines traditional Alpine character with a strong focus on sustainability, regional food and well-being. Its extensive wellness facilities include an indoor panoramic pool (84°F), heated outdoor panoramic pool (90°F), two outdoor whirlpools, a summer natural bathing pond, a seven-sauna area with Finnish, herbal, hay, infrared and Turkish steam saunas, an outdoor panoramic sauna beside the pond, Kneipp facilities and several relaxation areas with waterbeds, hanging beds and a room of silence. There’s also a Technogym fitness room, garden and sun terraces, a mountain library, cozy lounges, bar and wine cellar, as well as Zirm SPA & Badl which offers massages, beauty treatments and traditional treatments such as hay baths. Hiking gear, including backpacks and poles, can be rented at the hotel.

The pools are open daily from 7:00 AM–9:00 PM, while the main sauna area is open from 2:00 PM–7:30 PM; one outdoor sauna is available 24 hours. The Zirm SPA is open from 12:30 PM–8:00 PM, making it particularly easy to fit some wellness time in after your hikes.

Sustainability is an important part of the hotel's philosophy: electricity comes from hydropower, hot water is supplied through biomass and solar energy, and the hotel uses energy-saving systems, local suppliers and measures to reduce waste and packaging. For full details of the hotel, facilities and services, see the Berghotel website (opens in new tab).

The Sexten and Val Pusteria area is home to some of the Dolomites’ best-known trails and landmarks, so the most popular routes can be busy, particularly in peak summer between July and August. The itinerary balances some iconic highlights with quieter trails and lesser-known routes, and may use early starts or alternative variants to help you experience the spectacular scenery away from the busiest crowds.

Most hikes start directly from the hotel, so there’s no need for transfers on three days of the trip. On the other two hiking days, you’ll travel by private vehicle to and from the trailheads. The only exception is a short public bus journey between Prato Piazza and Dobbiaco, as private vehicles cannot access the pick-up point during the day.

The hikes on this trip range from valley trails to high mountain viewpoints, with the highest point reaching around 7,875ft. Most days are spent between roughly 4,265ft and 7,220ft, so you’ll experience the full alpine environment – with cooler air, occasional snow patches early or late in the season, and spectacular views – but no altitude acclimatization is required. The hikes remain within safe, accessible high-mountain levels.

The Dolomites are known for changeable mountain weather; you can experience sun, wind, and rain all in a single day. Your guides are experts in the region and will adapt the route if needed to ensure safety and enjoyment. In case of really adverse conditions, hikes may be shortened, swapped for lower-altitude routes, or replaced with scenic valley walks or cultural visits in nearby villages. Rest assured, you’ll still spend plenty of time outdoors exploring the incredible landscapes.

You'll be led by one experienced, English-speaking hiking guide throughout the week. The guides are fully qualified and know the area well. Group size is capped at 12 travelers, ensuring an atmosphere where everyone can move at a steady, comfortable pace. No additional support crew is required, as this trip is hotel-based and all daily logistics (transfers, luggage handling, etc.) are pre-arranged and managed by your host and guide.

Since this is a hotel-based trip, you’ll have a permanent base for your luggage throughout. Just bring a comfortable daypack for your essentials (water, snacks, layers, camera, etc.). Your main luggage stays securely at the hotels, ready for you when you return each afternoon.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team before booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with (opens in new tab). You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website (opens in new tab), where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State (opens in new tab).

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information (opens in new tab) and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips typically consist of a mix of solo travelers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset (opens in new tab); a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends

This trip runs from June to September, when weather conditions in the Dolomites are more favorable for hiking. Expect classic Alpine summers: warm days and cool nights. June can be unsettled, with daytime temperatures at altitude around 54-68°F. July and August are the hottest, driest months, with valley temperatures reaching 77-84°F, cooling to 59-68°F higher up the trails. September tends to bring the most stable hiking weather, with daytime temperatures around 50-59°F at altitude. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in any summer month, so pack layers and a waterproof shell whichever month you travel.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 155kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
