Itinerary

  1. Day 1

The trek begins: Val Veny and Courmayeur

    Hiking
    3-4 hours · 12km · 190m up · 640m down
    Hotel
    Twin share
    Lunch and dinner included
    Show Day 1 detail

The trip begins with a private taxi transfer from Geneva Airport to Val Veny, a glacier-carved valley on the Italian side of Mont Blanc. The hiking is relatively gentle on this first day, 12km with more descent than ascent, giving you time to find your legs and take in the scale of the mountains above. The route climbs to Lac Miage, a glacial lake beneath the Miage Glacier, before following the valley floor with Mont Blanc’s south face rising above. The descent to Courmayeur passes the pilgrimage church of Notre Dame de la Guerison, a small 19th-century sanctuary at the mouth of the valley. Then it’s into Courmayeur, one of the best-known stops on the TMB, where good coffee, easy streets to explore and a restaurant dinner are all waiting at the end of the day.

  2. Day 2

Cross the Grand Col Ferret (2537m) into Switzerland

    Hiking
    6-7 hours · 15km · 860m up · 980m down
    Hotel
    Twin share
    All meals included
    Show Day 2 detail

Grab breakfast at your hotel before hopping into a taxi to Arnouva at the head of Val Ferret, where you'll start your hike up to Grand Col Ferret (2537m) – the highest point on your trip and the border between Italy and Switzerland. The trail climbs steadily through the valley, gradually leaving the trees behind as the landscape opens up around you. The final push to the col is rocky and exposed, but worth it for the jaw-dropping views across the valley. From here, it's all downhill, through broad alpine pastures and past grazing cattle, to the peaceful Swiss village of La Fouly, where you'll settle in for the evening.

  3. Day 3

Hike the Bovine Route and cross back into France

    Hiking
    6 hours · 16km · 750m up · 900m down
    Hotel
    Twin share
    All meals included
    Show Day 3 detail

This morning, you'll take a short transfer from La Fouly to Champex-Lac, where you'll start the day beside a glassy alpine lake tucked among pine forests. From here, the trail climbs along the Bovine Route, heading up through high alpine meadows and towards the Alpage de Bovine. The higher you climb, the bigger the landscape feels, with sweeping views across the Rhône Valley. Then it's a steep descent to Trient, winding through forest and farmland before a short taxi transfer takes you back into France and up to Argentière, at the head of the Chamonix Valley. From here, you'll grab a short ride to your overnight accommodation, a traditional Alpine-style hotel in Argentière, before settling in for the evening with dinner at the hotel or a local restaurant.

    Day 4

Lac Blanc and the grand finale

    Hiking
    5-6 hours · 14km · 1100m up · 600m down
    Breakfast and lunch included
    Show Day 4 detail

An epic finale awaits today as you wrap up your mini Tour du Mont Blanc adventure, with some of the highlights of the entire trail. Discover the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve as you climb to the shimmering Lac Blanc, possibly the world's most scenic picnic spot, with the Mont Blanc Massif laid out before you. Take your time to soak it all in before descending to La Flégère, where you'll hop on the cable car down to Les Praz. From here, follow the river back into Chamonix, where your mini TMB adventure comes to an end, ideally with a well-earned drink. If you're heading back to Geneva, an optional shared coach transfer departs at around 17:15.

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

A private group taxi transfer from Geneva Airport to Val Veny is included on Day 1. If you're already in the Chamonix area, you can instead join the group in Les Houches at 12:00 – just confirm this with your host when booking. At the end of the trip, a shared coach transfer from Chamonix to Geneva is available as an optional extra, departing at approximately 17:15. Alternatively, you're free to make your own way to Geneva or Milan airports. If you're flying from Geneva, we recommend booking flights departing after 20:30, or trains departing after 19:30. You can also choose to extend your stay with additional nights in Chamonix.

Travel options

Air travellers can fly into Geneva Airport (GVA), approximately one hour from Chamonix, or Milan Airport (LIN), around three hours away.

Prefer to avoid flying? Chamonix is also well connected by train. The nearest mainline station is St Gervais-les-Bains (Le Fayet), at the base of the valley, with onward connections to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc station. From London, you can take the Eurostar to Paris, then connect to a direct train or overnight sleeper to St Gervais-les-Bains, before continuing on to Chamonix.

You can also travel by train to Geneva from various parts of Europe, then continue to Chamonix by bus. Geneva bus station is a five-minute walk or short taxi ride from the central train station, with regular services to Chamonix. The fastest buses take around 1 hour 8 minutes.

Trip level explained

Level 5

Challenging

This is a condensed version of the TMB, covering four substantial hiking days across Italy, Switzerland and France. Daily distances range from 12km to 16km, with up to 1000m of elevation gain each day. The trails are well established and non-technical, but the terrain is steep and the hiking days come back-to-back, with no rest day. Day 2 is the toughest, taking you over the Grand Col Ferret at 2537m. And while the TMB is at its best in good weather, conditions in the Alps can change quickly – you could see sun, rain, wind and cold all in the same week, with the high passes particularly exposed.

This trip is best suited to intermediate hikers who are comfortable spending five to seven hours a day on steep, uneven mountain terrain, and doing so for several days in a row. You won't need any technical skills, but you should be confident tackling long ascents and descents, happy hiking in changeable alpine weather and comfortable carrying a daypack each day (your main bag, up to 15kg, will be transferred between hotels). We strongly recommend getting some longer days in the hills under your belt before you arrive.

What if i need to skip an activity?

This is a point-to-point circuit, so there's limited scope to shorten or skip days.

What will I need to carry?

You'll carry a daypack on the trail each day, while your main bag is transferred between hotels. Keep your daypack light but make sure you've got everything you need for the day: at least 1.5 litres of water (there are refill points along the trail), your packed lunch, a waterproof jacket, warm mid-layer, sun cream, a hat and gloves for the high passes, a small first aid kit and any personal medication.

Trekking poles are recommended for the long descents and can be hired locally if you don't want to bring your own.

High altitude (over 2500m): factors to consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

FAQs

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

French cuisine has been shaped over centuries by rich agricultural land, regional farming traditions and a deep cultural emphasis on food as a shared, unhurried experience. This has produced varied, often meat and dairy-centric cooking, with regional specialities ranging from hearty countryside dishes to lighter, seafood-based fare along the coasts. Dietary requirements are generally well understood in towns and cities, where menus are often adaptable, though rural or traditional establishments can be more rigid, particularly around dairy and gluten. Travellers should expect good overall accommodation of common diets, but it helps to flag specific needs early, especially outside larger towns. As all meals are accompanied by a guide, they can help communicate requirements clearly and steer choices where menus are less flexible.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Halal
Certified Halal supply varies by location and may not always be possible. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten-free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below)
Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

Lactose-free
Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens (opens in new tab) identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Tap water is safe to drink throughout France, Italy and Switzerland, and all hotels on the route will have drinking water available. On the trail, you'll find regular refill points, including village fountains and streams fed by snowmelt, and your guide will point out reliable sources each day. We recommend carrying at least 1.5 litres of water from your hotel each morning. If you plan to refill from streams along the way, it's worth bringing a filter bottle (opens in new tab) or purification tablets as a precaution.

The Tour du Mont Blanc is a well-established route with contingency options built into this itinerary. Your IML-certified guide is trained in mountain first aid and emergency procedures. In the event of injury, illness or severe weather, the guide will make decisions in the best interests of the group, which may include altering the route, shortening a day or arranging evacuation. Several days include taxi transfers between sections, which gives the team flexibility to adjust without losing the core experience.

One IML (International Mountain Leader) certified guide leads every day of the trek. The guide is English-speaking with expert knowledge of the Tour du Mont Blanc route and alpine conditions. The guide ratio is 1:12 (one guide per group, maximum 12 hikers).

Yes, bag storage in Chamonix is available as an optional extra at €30 per bag. This is useful if you're arriving with more than the 15kg luggage transfer allowance, or if you want to leave non-hiking kit behind before the trip starts.

June–July: Conditions are generally warm and settled, with daytime temperatures around 12–20°C (54–68°F) at altitude and up to 25°C (77°F) in valley towns such as Chamonix and Courmayeur. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible, particularly in July, while snow can linger on the higher passes in early June.

August: The height of summer, with temperatures around 15–22°C (59–72°F) on the trail and warmer conditions in the valleys. This is typically the most settled weather of the season, although afternoon cloud and short storms are still possible.

September: Cooler and often drier than August, with excellent visibility. Expect temperatures of around 8–16°C (46–61°F) on the trail, with cold nights and near-freezing temperatures possible at higher elevations. Early snow can also arrive on the high passes from mid-September.

Regardless of when you go, mountain weather can change quickly. Pack a waterproof layer, warm mid-layer and plenty of sun protection, and be prepared for a bit of everything.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 76kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
