Itinerary
Day 1
To the mountains!
Driving3hrsHotelTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Meet your group at Venice Marco Polo Airport and jump in your private transfer to Val Pusteria. Set in the heart of the Northern Dolomites near the Austrian border and beneath the famous Tre Cime, this is one of the most iconic corners of the range, well connected to local trails and highlights of the region. Your home for the next five days is the Tyrolean village of Dobbiaco, where you'll stay at Chasca Living, a welcoming hotel complete with an indoor pool and sauna – the perfect place to unwind after your adventures. You'll have time to settle in before meeting your guide to go through the plans for the week, then enjoy a relaxed group dinner. Your adventure kicks off tomorrow morning.
Day 2
Raft the Rienza river and stroll around Lake Dobbiaco
Rafting2.5hrsNature Walk2hrsDriving2hrsHotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
After breakfast, a short transfer takes you to San Sigismondo for a morning of rafting down the Rienza River with a specialist local team. You don't need any previous experience, so it's a great intro to rafting, and you'll get a different angle on the Dolomites from here – the steep wooded gorges rising straight from the water are a perspective you don't get from the hiking trails. Expect lively waves, a few swimming breaks in the current, and the chance to test your nerve on Class III rapids. It's the kind of morning that turns strangers into a group fast. Once you're back on dry land, the afternoon is yours to spend as you like. For those who are keen to keep exploring, you can join your guide on an optional nature trail around Lago di Dobbiaco, a beautiful turquoise lake within walking distance of the hotel that somehow stays under the radar, while everyone else heads for Lago di Braies. Otherwise, it's the perfect afternoon to sit back and make the most of the hotel's pool and sauna before dinner.
Day 3
Summit Strudelkopf and taste the region's cheese

After breakfast, settle in for a short transfer to Prato Piazza (1991m), a wide alpine plateau ringed by meadows and wildflowers. From here you'll begin the hike up to Monte Specie, also known as Strudelkopf, a 2307m summit with sweeping views over Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Monte Piana and Monte Cristallo. On clear days this is one of the finest vantage points in the Dolomites, and your first proper look at the Tre Cime themselves, a taster for the close-up you'll get beneath them on your final day. You'll stop for a light lunch (not included) at a cosy mountain hut known for its traditional dishes and terrace views, then descend back to the trailhead. Before returning to the hotel, there's time to call in at Mondo Latte, a working dairy where local cheesemakers still follow recipes passed down through generations, and you'll get the chance to taste a few varieties in the modern deli by the factory, before heading back to the hotel for a hot shower followed by dinner with your group.
Day 4
Cycle from Dobbiaco into Lienz: two countries in one day!
Cycling3hrs · 49km · 40m up · 570m downTrain Journey1.5hrsHotelTwin shareBreakfast includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Swapping boots for wheels, today's ride follows the Drava Cycle Path, tracing the gentle line of the Val Pusteria from Dobbiaco towards Lienz, one of Austria's prettiest small towns. It's 49km of mostly downhill tarmac, freewheeling past meadows, farmhouses and the odd roadside cafe, with barely a hill to trouble your legs. Somewhere along the way, almost without noticing, you'll cross the border from Italy into Austria. After lunch and time to wander Lienz's pastel-coloured streets and market squares, you'll board a train back to Dobbiaco, giving your legs a well-earned rest while the mountains slide past the window. The rest of the day and evening is free for you to squeeze in a sauna session or a dip in the pool, and your guide will be happy to point you towards a good local restaurant or pizzeria in Dobbiaco for the evening. It's a day that's been kept deliberately gentle but fun, both a change of pace after yesterday's hike and a chance to feel rested for tomorrow's final hike, which is the one day on this trip that demands more stamina.
Day 5
Hike beneath the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Hiking7hrs · 15km · 1000m up · 1000m downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
After an early breakfast, transfer by bus to Val Fiscalina, the starting point for one of the Dolomites' most spectacular hikes. This route follows a quieter and more rewarding alternative to the crowded Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop, giving you outstanding views of these iconic peaks while avoiding the busiest sections. The trail begins gently through forest and meadows at the foot of the Sesto Dolomites. As you ascend more steeply, the trees thin out, revealing ever-expanding panoramas of rugged peaks, Croda dei Toni, Cima Undici and Monte Popera forming an unforgettable amphitheatre of Dolomitic rock around you. The route traverses below the northern face of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo by Rifugio Locatelli, bringing you up close to the unmistakable symbol of the Dolomites. You'll stop to enjoy lunch with this world-famous view before beginning your long descent towards Val di Landro, where the route ends at Lake Landro. Today is a longer and more tiring day of hiking, but the rewards are immense: varied terrain, dramatic scenery at every turn, and a full immersion in one of the wildest corners of the Dolomites. Back at the hotel, there's time to shower off the trail dust before a celebratory final dinner together, toasting a week that's taken in Alpine summits, Austrian villages and Dolomite whitewater.

What's not included
Our trips do not include flights, trains or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.
On this trip, lunches are not included, allowing you to make a choice between a sandwich or a hot meal at the mountains huts along the trails, depending on your appetite. One dinner is not included during the trip, so that you can pick a restaurant of your choosing whilst exploring the lovely village of Dobbiaco.
We recommend that you budget around €20-25 per day to cover your lunches and a drink, and around €30-40 for an evening meal. Please note that your budget for lunch largely depends on the type of meal you choose at the mountain huts, where you'll stop during your hikes. A simple panini costs approximately €8; first courses usually cost around €15-18, and second courses around €18-20. Soft drinks and beers are around €3-6.
You'll need to budget for some city taxes, payable locally at the hotel in cash at the end of your stay. Please allow approximately €2-3.50 per night for this.
Tips are not included in the trip cost; these are entirely at your discretion. If you would like to tip, the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality. As a guideline, we recommend the following:
- €25-30 per person for the main tour leader
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping and laundry.
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travellers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

FAQs
What if things don't go to plan?
The Dolomites are known for changeable mountain weather; you can experience sun, wind, and rain all in a single day. Your guides are experts in the region and will adapt the route if needed to ensure safety and enjoyment. In case of really adverse conditions, hikes may be shortened, swapped for lower-altitude routes, or days of the itinerary reshuffled.
Are the trails busy? How do we avoid the crowds?
Dobbiaco and the Val Pusteria area sit close to some of the Dolomites' best-known landmarks, so it naturally draws more visitors, especially in July and August. To help you find space and serenity on the trails, your guide may plan early starts, and you'll follow a more challenging variant of the classic Tre Cime route, avoiding the crowds for most of the hike (except around Rifugio Locatelli). Rafting is a generally quiet experience by comparison, rarely busy. The bike ride to Lienz follows a family-friendly route that can get busier in peak summer, so it's scheduled on a weekday and, depending on crowd levels, may also start early to stay ahead of the bike traffic.
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
You'll be led by one experienced, English-speaking hiking guide throughout the week. The guides are fully qualified and know the area well. Group size is capped at 12 travellers, ensuring an atmosphere where everyone can move at a steady, comfortable pace. On the rafting day, you'll be led by specialist rafting guides, and on the cycling day, an additional local support guide joins groups of 9+ people. No further support crew is required, as this trip is hotel-based and all daily logistics (transfers etc.) are pre-arranged and managed by your host and guide.
Can I leave my excess luggage somewhere during the trip?
Since this is a hotel-based trip, you’ll have a permanent base for your luggage throughout. Just bring a comfortable daypack for your essentials (water, snacks, layers, camera, etc.) during each activity.
What do I do about drinking water?
The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles (at least 2L) to fill up at the mountain huts to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.
What type of bike is included?
The bike day uses comfortable, unisex aluminium-frame city bikes with SHIMANO NEXUS 7-speed gears, V-brakes, and front suspension – well suited to the easy, mostly flat, paved terrain of the Drava Cycle Path. Helmets and baskets will also be provided.
How do we get to and from the trails?
On some days, you’ll set off directly from your hotel, while on others you’ll reach the trailheads by private minivan or public bus, with short transfers of between 15–40 minutes.
Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form as soon as possible with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets can usually be accommodated provided your host is informed in advance. Please note that choice in the mountain huts is limited; meals may be simpler and less varied than at lower-altitude accommodation.
Vegan
Vegan diets can often be accommodated if your host is informed well in advance, although options in the mountain huts are likely to be limited. Meals may be repetitive and lower in protein, as traditional cuisine relies heavily on meat, cheese and dairy products. We strongly recommend bringing protein bars and other suitable snacks to supplement your diet.
Kosher
Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed, unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
Halal
Certified Halal supply will not be possible during the trip. Vegetarian options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten-free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below)
Gluten-free diets can usually be accommodated provided your host is informed well in advance. However, choice in the mountain huts may be limited, and gluten-free alternatives may not always be available for every meal. If you have Coeliac disease or rely on specific gluten-free products, we recommend bringing some supplementary products from home.
Lactose-free
Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens (opens in new tab) identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip. Please note that meals are prepared in small shared kitchens within remote mountain huts, where cross-contamination cannot be completely eliminated.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with (opens in new tab). You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website (opens in new tab), where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).
For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information (opens in new tab) and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way. Check out our Community Values (opens in new tab) – a shared code to make sure that everyone's experience is safe, inclusive and brilliantly unforgettable.

What's the weather like?
This trip runs from June to September, when weather conditions in the Dolomites are more favourable for the outdoor activities included in this trip. Val Pusteria sees classic Alpine summers: warm days and cool nights. June can be unsettled, with daytime temperatures at altitude around 12-20ºC (54-68ºF). July and August are the hottest, driest months, with valley temperatures reaching 25-29ºC (77-84ºF), cooling to 15-20ºC (59-68ºF) higher up the trails. September tends to bring the most stable hiking weather, with daytime temperatures around 10-15ºC (50-59ºF) at altitude. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in any summer month, so pack layers and a waterproof shell whichever month you travel.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 145kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
