Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Nicaragua
HotelTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Welcome to Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Once you arrive, meet your driver – there will be two transfers available today, grouped around everyone's arrival times. If you arrive early enough, kick off the trip with a briefing from your local guide and a welcome dinner. If you land on a later flight, don't worry, you can introduce yourself and get all the info from your guide tomorrow.
Day 2
Highland hikes to a waterfall and a community cooperative
Driving5hrsHiking1hr · 2mi · 164ft up · 164ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Head north out of Managua into Nicaragua's central highlands, a three-hour drive that trades tropical lowlands for cooler mountain air. Your first stop is a visit to La Garnacha, a cooperative that has run sustainable tourism initiatives that support the local community for over two decades. You can visit the local village and take in panoramic viewpoints over the valley before sitting down to a traditional lunch cooked by the community in the cooperative's Casa del Yogurt. From there, it's a short walk to Salto Estanzuela, a waterfall tucked into the hills that makes for a refreshing pause before continuing on the road to Somoto, where you check into your hotel for the night and have a free evening for dinner.
Day 3
Wade and swim through Somoto Canyon
Canyoning4hrs · 2miHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Fuel up on breakfast before heading to Somoto Canyon, where you'll wade, swim, and drift through this dramatic gorge cut deep into the earth by the Coco River, its walls rising up to 525 feet above you as the rock closes in overhead. You'll be led by a local canyoning guide, and a life jacket plus a waterproof bag for your camera and phone will be provided, with lunch served canyon-side. Back at the hotel, freshen up before heading out for an evening of local experiences. If time permits, you'll first stop to learn how rosquillas (a traditional corn snack) are made, before heading to La Planta Unplugged, the town's craft brewery, for beer tasting (non-alcoholic alternatives can be provided).
Day 4
Hike up El Hoyo volcano to camp on the crater rim
Hiking3hrs · 4mi · 1640ft upWild campingTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Leave Somoto after breakfast for the drive south to Leon, Nicaragua's cultural capital. Drop your main luggage in town and grab lunch before the afternoon's real adventure. From Leon, it's a short transfer to the base of El Hoyo Volcano, where an unforgettable hike begins, through terrain that shifts from dry scrubland to raw, open rock as you climb roughly 1,650 feet to your wild camping spot. Arrive in time to reach the volcano's crater rim for one of Nicaragua's most extraordinary sunsets, with the Pacific glinting to the west as the light fades.
Day 5
Sunrise from the crater and a Pacific sunset dinner
Hiking3hrs · 4mi · 1640ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Set your alarm early: sunrise from El Hoyo, volcanic peaks silhouetted against the sky and the Pacific sparkling below, is worth every early minute. Breakfast at camp brings fresh fruit, granola, local bread and coffee before you hike back down through the volcanic landscape, retracing your steps over a couple of hours to where the vehicles are waiting. Back in Leon, check into your hotel for the night, with a shower and a change of clothes to shake off two days in the field. The afternoon is free to explore Leon at your own pace. You can wander through the historic streets, visit one of the largest cathedrals in Central America or admire the revolutionary murals dotted around town. This evening, drive out west to Poneloya beach for a golden Pacific sunset, cold drinks and fresh seafood.
Day 6
Explore Granada and watch Masaya's lava glow at dusk
Driving3hrsWalking Tour2hrsHiking1hr · 1mi · 164ft up · 164ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
Head south to Granada, one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas, enjoying the views as you settle into the three-hour drive that ends with lunch on arrival. In the afternoon, discover the city at street level and from above: walk the Parque Central on foot before heading by vehicle to the historic Estacion de Tren, the colonial fortress of La Polvora and the bell tower of Iglesia La Merced, where panoramic views over Granada's rooftops and Lake Nicaragua make for one of the best photo stops on the trip. As the light softens, head to Masaya Volcano National Park, one of the few places on the planet where you can look directly into an active lava lake. The glow only intensifies as darkness falls, raw and genuinely mesmerizing. Back in town, you have a free evening to grab dinner and try some of the famous Flor de Caña rum, if that's your style!
Day 7
Zip-line Mombacho's cloud forest and dip in natural springs
Hiking3hrs · 2mi · 492ft upZip-lining1hrHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 7 detailHide detail
Spend the morning in the cloud forest that cloaks Mombacho Volcano, lacing up your boots to hit the Tigrillo Trail. A short hike at around 4,000 feet above sea level takes you through orchids, ferns, and towering trees, with monkeys and colorful birds for company and views over Lake Nicaragua and Granada opening up along the way. Then it's time to swap boots for a harness: nine platforms and multiple zip-line cables carry you back down through the canopy, finishing with a Tarzan swing and a 40-foot rappel drop. After a sit-down lunch on the volcano, head to Aguas Agrias for a refreshing dip in the natural pools hidden in the volcanic terrain, before you head back to Granada. Your evening here is free to enjoy as you wish.
Day 8
Paddle Las Isletas, and cross Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe
Stand Up Paddleboarding2hrsDriving1hrBoat Journey1hrHotelTwin shareBreakfast includedShow Day 8 detailHide detail
Start the day on the water with a stand-up paddleboarding session through Las Isletas, an archipelago of over 300 small islands formed by an ancient eruption of Mombacho Volcano, keeping an eye out for birds and monkeys along the way (please note that on some occasions, this may need to be replaced with a boat trip, from where you can see all the same views and wildlife). From Granada, transfer to San Jorge Port for the ferry crossing to Ometepe Island, an hour on the water with the twin volcanoes of Concepcion and Maderas rising dramatically ahead of you. You'll arrive into Moyogalpa and head to your hotel for the next two nights. You have a free evening to grab dinner at any spot that takes your fancy.
Day 9
Kayaking along the Istiam River
Kayaking2hrs · 5miHotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 9 detailHide detail
After several intense days, the morning is yours to relax. Sleep in, swim in the lake, or explore the area around the hotel on foot: Ometepe rewards stillness just as much as adventure. In the afternoon, head out to the Istiam River for two to three hours of paddling through wetlands and mangrove channels, one of the island's quietest and most biodiverse corridors, where caimans, howler monkeys, kingfishers, and herons are regular company along the banks. Round off the evening with dinner at the hotel restaurant, a relaxed night on the island before tomorrow's return to the mainland.
Day 10
Swim in the crater lake at Laguna de Apoyo
Boat Journey1hrDriving3hrsHotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 10 detailHide detail
Begin the day by taking the ferry back across Lake Nicaragua to San Jorge, soaking in the views of Ometepe's twin volcanoes one last time before transferring on to Laguna de Apoyo, a crystal-clear volcanic crater lake inside a protected nature reserve. Spend the afternoon swimming, floating, and relaxing in one of Central America's most beautiful natural pools. If you prefer to get a little more hiking in, there are trails nearby. In the evening, gather together in Granada for a farewell dinner featuring a traditional caballo bayo experience: a spread of authentic Nicaraguan dishes served in clay pots, which you'll load onto corn tortillas. Enjoy the last toast to a trip that's covered volcanoes, canyons, and coastline in equal measure.

What's not included
Our trips do not include flights, trains or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.
Three dinners are not included in this itinerary to give you the freedom to explore local eateries. We recommend that you budget €15-25 for each of these meals.
Tips are not included in the trip cost; these are entirely at your discretion. If you would like to tip, the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality. As a guide, we recommend a tip of $5 per day for local activity guides and drivers and $10 per day for your tour leader.
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional food and drinks, shopping and laundry.
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate coverage for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and gear, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment coverage, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer coverage for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

FAQs
Can my dietary needs be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form ASAP with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Nicaraguan cuisine has been shaped by its volcanic soils, tropical climate, and blend of Indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean influences, producing meals built around corn, beans, plantain, rice, and locally raised meat. Dishes tend to be hearty, simple, and repetitive rather than varied, with corn and beans forming the backbone of most meals across both town and countryside.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
Vegan
Vegan diets can be partially catered for on this trip, however, options may be limited, particularly in rural locations.
Kosher
Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision cannot be provided for in Nicaragua. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
Halal
Certified Halal meat is rare in Nicaragua. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten-free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below)
Much of Nicaragua's cuisine, based on beans and rice dishes, is naturally gluten-free. However, kitchens often prepare other dishes that contain gluten so there is a chance of cross-contamination. Please check with your host in advance if you are concerned.
Lactose-free
Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens (opens in new tab) identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team before booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
What do I do about drinking water?
Tap water in Nicaragua is not safe to drink. Guests should drink purified water only. Our guides carry purified water refills on all active days and it is included throughout the trip. Guests should bring a reusable water bottle (min. 1.5 liters) and avoid ice from unknown sources.
What if things don't go to plan?
Most activities will take place come rain or shine, but rain is rare in the December to April operational window of this trip. Parts of the itinerary may need to be adjusted to account for extreme weather or any other adverse conditions. Your host will always do their best to provide prior notice if this is the case, but your safety is their priority and sometimes decisions need to be taken quickly on the ground. The ferry to and from Omtepe Island can sometimes be disrupted due to strong winds. When this is the case, you'll take the next sailing and a buffer time has been built into the itinerary to allow for this.
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
You will have one guide for the duration of your trip, as well as a local specialist activity guide for many of the included activities (i.e., canyoning, kayaking, volcano hikes). You will also have a driver for all transfers and local arrieros who will accompany the pack horses for the El Hoyo summit camp.
Are there any weight limits for activities?
There are no strict weight limits for any of the activities involved, as long as the equipment safely fits and you have the required level of fitness to participate.
Will I have cell signal and WiFi?
Mobile signal is available in most towns and along main roads, but patchy or absent in remote areas such as El Hoyo volcano and Somoto Canyon. WiFi is available at all hotels, though speeds vary. We recommend guests set up an eSIM for Nicaragua before traveling – several providers offer eSIM plans that can be activated on your existing phone without needing a local SIM card. Alternatively, local SIM cards (Claro or Tigo) are available in Nicaragua for those who prefer this option.
What currency should I bring and can I use my card?
The local currency is the Nicaraguan Cordoba (NIO), but US Dollars are widely accepted and often preferred at tourist-facing businesses. We recommend guests bring USD cash in small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20) in perfect condition, as torn, marked, or worn bills are commonly refused. Card payments are accepted at some hotels and larger restaurants, but cash is essential for tips, local markets, smaller eateries, and activities. ATMs are available in Managua, Granada, and Leon but less reliable in smaller towns. We recommend withdrawing or exchanging money before leaving the main cities.
What wildlife can I see on this trip?
While this trip isn't specifically designed to optimize wildlife spotting opportunities, there will be plenty of chances to see many types of wildlife. Ometepe Island is particularly good for wildlife viewing, and there is a good chance you will see howler monkeys, kingfishers, caimans, and herons there.
Are the horses used to carry goods up to El Hoyo Summit Camp well cared for?
The horses are owned and handled by their local owners, who care deeply about their welfare and do not use any force when handling the animals. Only healthy horses are used; no sick, injured, young, elderly, or pregnant horses are used to carry equipment. Loads are distributed across several horses according to group size and they never carry more than 20% of their body weight. The animals have regular access to food, water, and rest periods.

What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information (opens in new tab) and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

See here (opens in new tab) for more info about the Much Better Adventures tribe.
What's the weather like?
This trip runs from December to April, within Nicaragua's dry season, when rainfall is minimal and conditions are at their best. In the northern highlands around Somoto, daytime temperatures sit between 64-86°F, dropping cooler in the evenings from December to January, so pack a light jacket for camp nights and drives through the hills. On the Pacific coast, in Granada and on Ometepe, expect warm weather year-round, with daytime highs of 79-90°F and higher humidity, especially around the volcanoes.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 157kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
