Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Welcome to the High Tatras Mountains

    Driving
    2.5 hrs
    Hotel
    Twin share
    Dinner included
    Show Day 1 detail

Fly into Krakow and head south toward the mountains, watching the flat farmland of southern Poland slowly give way to the jagged peaks of the High Tatras as you cross into Slovakia. A couple of hours later, you'll arrive in Tatranska Lomnica and check into Hotel Lomnica, a 5-star base right at the foot of the range. Settle in, take a breather, and soak up those first mountain views before meeting your guide and fellow hikers over an evening of award-winning local gastronomy at the hotel. Then it's an early night and a good rest before your first day on the trail.

  2. Day 2

Hike to Popradske Pleso and into the wilds of Mengusovska Valley

    Hiking
    5 hrs · 7mi · 1148ft up · 1312ft down
    Hotel
    Twin share
    Breakfast and dinner included
    Show Day 2 detail

Today a short transfer takes you to Strbske Pleso, where you'll swap the road for a snowy forest trail winding through snow-heavy pines towards Popradske Pleso. From there, the trail heads deeper into Mengusovska Valley, one of the wildest corners of the High Tatras. As the trees thin, the views open up, with snow-covered peaks rising all around you. Exactly how far you go depends on the snow and weather, so your guide will read the conditions and decide how deep into the valley you can venture. Then it's time to thaw out over lunch at a mountain hotel tucked beneath the peaks, before an easy descent back to the valley floor. Tonight, dinner is just next door at the Kuszmannov bazar pub - handy, because those mountain legs might be feeling it by now.

  3. Day 3

Hike to Zelene Pleso, then enjoy a five-course feast

    Hiking
    7 hrs · 11mi · 2133ft up · 2133ft down

    Show Day 3 detail

Fuel up with breakfast, then take a short transfer to Biela voda, the starting point for today’s hike. From here, a forest trail climbs steadily through the snow towards Zelene pleso – the Green Lake. By the time you reach the lake, the trees have fallen away and the frozen water is hemmed in by steep rock faces and snow-draped peaks. It's not a technical route, but winter conditions can make the climb feel like a proper workout. A mountain hut sits right on the lakeshore, making it the perfect spot to stop for lunch and take in the views before retracing your steps through the forest. Back at Hotel Lomnica, it's time to properly unwind. Sink into the spa before heading to Restaurant Sissi for a five-course tasting dinner, paired with wines from the hotel's own cellar. A pretty good way to round off a day in the mountains.

    Day 4

Peaks, cable cars and your mountain retreat

    Hiking
    3 hrs · 4mi · 1969ft up
    Hotel
    Twin share
    Breakfast and dinner included
    Show Day 4 detail

Grab breakfast at your hotel, then head out on foot to the cable car station, just a short walk away. From there, you'll soar up to the summit of Lomnicky stit, the second-highest peak in Slovakia. Up top, a viewing platform opens out onto one of the biggest panoramas of the trip, with peaks stretching all the way towards Poland on a clear day. Back at lower altitude, a short transfer takes you to Tatranska Polianka, where you can choose your way up to Sliezsky Dom. Hike for around three hours, climbing through forest before breaking out onto open alpine terrain, or skip the climb and take a transfer straight to the top. Either way, your luggage will be waiting at Sliezsky Dom, tucked away in the heart of the High Tatras, far from the towns and valleys below.

  4. Day 5

One last look at the Tatras

    Driving
    2.5 hrs
    Breakfast included
    Show Day 5 detail

After breakfast, check out and make your way down from the mountains for the drive back to Krakow Airport, arriving around noon. It’s a final few hours to swap stories, compare favorite moments and, no doubt, start plotting where you’ll all head next. Then it’s time to say your goodbyes and head home.

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

There's one group transfer on Day 1, from Krakow Airport in Poland to your first night's lodging in Slovakia's High Tatras. You'll meet the rest of your group at the airport and travel together with the driver. Your guide will meet you at the hotel that evening for the welcome briefing.

On Day 5, a single group transfer takes you from the final hotel back to Krakow Airport, arriving around 12:00 PM, so it's best to book onward flights departing after 3:00 PM. Both transfers are run by professional drivers, and your guide won't travel with you.

If you're arriving or departing at a different time, your host can arrange private transfers – see the Optional Extras section for prices. Pickups and drop-offs at city hotels in Krakow aren't possible, but trains between the city and the airport run once or twice an hour and take 17 minutes.

Travel options

Krakow Airport has regular international flights from across Europe. If you're traveling from North America, LOT Polish Airlines flies direct to Krakow from Chicago (ORD), and there are one-stop connections from other major US gateways, including New York (JFK) and Newark (EWR).

Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

This trip includes three days of hiking in a winter mountain environment, averaging five hours a day. Cold temperatures and snow and ice underfoot make the going tougher, but the pace is relaxed, leaving time to enjoy the mountains rather than rushing from point to point. Your guide may adjust each day's route to suit the group, and larger groups have a second guide so everyone can hike at their own pace. The trails aren't technical but include moderate ascents and descents of up to 2,133ft a day, and can be uneven or slippery in places. Your local host will provide microspikes if conditions require them, and no previous experience is needed to use them.

The highest point of the trip is the 8,641ft summit of Lomnicky Stit on Day 4, reached by cable car rather than on foot. The hiking itself stays lower, topping out at 5,479ft on the trails and at the overnight mountain hotel. The longest hiking day covers 11mi over seven hours.

You should be comfortable spending five to seven hours at a time hiking on undulating terrain in winter conditions.

What if i need to skip an activity?

If you'd like a rest day, you can skip a day's hike and stay at the hotel, where you'll have access to the spa. Your guide may also be able to suggest an alternative activity, so it's worth speaking to them in advance.

What will I need to carry?

On hiking days, you'll only need a 20–30L daypack for water, waterproofs, spare warm layers, snacks, and any personal essentials. Your main luggage is transferred to Sliezsky Dom ahead of your Day 4 overnight stay, so you won't need to carry it.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Cold climate: factors to consider

This trip includes locations or elevations where conditions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures may drop below freezing (32°F), and nights are often significantly colder. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of exposure-related issues, such as frostbite or hypothermia.

Your guide is trained to manage these risks, adapting activity intensity and monitoring group well-being. However, it's important to take personal responsibility – bringing the right cold-weather gear (see Kit List), staying hydrated and well-nourished, and recognizing early signs of cold stress.

We recommend assessing your personal comfort and resilience in cold environments, and consulting a medical professional if you have health conditions that may be affected. Arriving early can also help you acclimatize to the colder conditions, especially if you're coming from a much warmer climate.

High altitude (over 8,200 ft): factors to consider

This trip visits locations at or above 8,200ft, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group well-being, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatize can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens (opens in new tab) identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles (at least 2 liters) to fill up to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

Your local host and guides keep a close eye on weather, snow, and trail conditions throughout the trip. If conditions change, the itinerary may be adjusted, with your safety as the priority. In this case, your guide will arrange an alternative route or activity.

If high winds close the cable car to Lomnicky Stit, your guide will reschedule the ascent for the day with the clearest weather. If the cable car stays closed for your whole stay, you'll be offered an alternative local activity instead.

Groups of up to eight people have one guide, and larger groups have a second guide. The maximum group size is 12.

Your main luggage is transferred between hotels for you. As you don't return to your first hotel, it isn't possible to store excess luggage there.

In winter, high winds, snow, and ice are all part of hiking in the High Tatras, so you'll need to be prepared for them. From January to March, daytime temperatures typically range from 28°F to 41°F. At night, they drop to around 16°F and can fall as low as -4°F during cold snaps. Multiple warm layers are essential, and your kit list sets out exactly what to bring.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 80kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
