Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Stockholm!
Boat Journey2.5hrsHiking4kmHostelMulti shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Arrive in Stockholm this morning and make your way into the city centre by train or bus. If you’re in early, stash your bags at Central Station (see the ‘Getting There’ section for more info) and head out for a wander. Meet your guide in the city centre, then hop aboard an archipelago ferry and watch the capital dissolve into a scatter of pine-covered islands as you cruise out to Svartso. Step ashore on your first island of the trip and stretch your legs with a steady 4km walk to your first hostel. Your bag travels ahead by quad bike from the jetty, so you only need to carry your daypack. Get settled, then gather for a late dinner cooked up by your guide as the light turns golden over the pastures. Welcome to the Stockholm Archipelago (opens in new tab) with a wild week of wandering waiting ahead.
Day 2
Hike from Svartso to Finnhamn
Hiking5-6hrs · 18km · 150m up · 150m downBoat Journey30minsHostelMulti shareAll meals includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Tuck into breakfast at the hostel before setting out along the Svartso section of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail. Expect easy walking along gravel lanes and through grazed meadows that feel like stepping back a century, with boathouses dotted along the water’s edge. At the end of the section, hop on a short ferry to Ingmarso, your next island to tick off. Follow winding paths through undulating forest before tackling the day’s finale: the Batluffarleden. Here, a pair of rowing boats are moored on opposite sides of a narrow sound. With your guide, row 400 metres across to Finnhamn, leaving one boat on each bank for the next hikers. It’s a proper archipelago tradition. Tonight, settle into Finnhamn’s charming 1915 hostel and tuck into a hearty dinner whipped up by your guides. Not a bad way to round off your first full day on the trail.
Day 3
Finnhamn, the artists' island of Bullero, and on to Uto
Hiking3-4hrs · 8km · 120m up · 120m downBoat Journey2hrsHostelMulti shareAll meals includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Early risers can squeeze in an optional short hike to explore a little more of Finnhamn before a taxi boat whisks you off to Bullero. Once the wild retreat of painter Bruno Liljefors, the island is now the gateway to Namdoskargarden National Park, Sweden’s newest and second marine national park. Hit the trails across windswept granite slabs dotted with pine trees as your guide shares stories of how these islands shaped a generation of Swedish artists. Fancy a dip? Bullero has some cracking wild swim spots, and your guide will pick the best one based on the conditions. There’s also time to drop into the national park’s visitor centre before another boat carries you to Uto, meaning ‘Outer Island’ in Swedish. Check in to your base for the next three nights, ready for more island-hopping tomorrow.
Day 4
The wild heart of Uto
Hiking6-7hrs · 16km · 300m up · 300m downWild Swimming1hrHostelMulti shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Today’s section is often considered one of the highlights of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail, with a bit of everything these islands have to offer. Follow open gravel roads and reed-fringed boardwalks before tackling a more rugged, technical path along the eastern coast, exposed to the open sea. Continue to an old mining village, where water-filled shafts sunk almost 700 years ago are scattered across the landscape. Hike back to the hostel, where the rest of the evening is yours to make the most of Sweden’s long summer days. Dinner isn’t included tonight, so you’re free to choose from the restaurants and bakery in Gruvbyn.
Day 5
Wild swim in Alo, the wildest part of the trip
Hiking5-6hrs · 13km · 250m up · 250m downSauna1hrWild Swimming1hrHostelMulti shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Another island awaits this morning. A short minibus hop across the Alo bridge drops you straight into the wildest section of the entire trail. Alo is almost entirely untouched nature: pine forest, cliffs plunging towards the sea and the extraordinary white sands of Storsand beach. It’s the perfect spot for an epic wild swim after your hike. Once you’ve finished the final stretch of trail, head back to Uto. Dinner is yours to sort tonight, but the real treat comes afterwards. You’ve got exclusive use of a wood-fired hot tub and sauna, with the sea just a few steps away for a cooling dip. Alternate between the heat and the chilly Baltic waters as the evening light fades. Those tired hikers’ legs won’t know what’s hit them.
Day 6
Head south to Oja and Landsort
Boat Journey1hrHiking4-5hrs · 11km · 180m up · 180m downHostelMulti shareAll meals includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
Say goodbye to your base on Uto this morning and head for the archipelago’s southern frontier, travelling by road and sea to the long, narrow island of Oja. Check in to your final hostel of the trip, then lace up for the Landsort section of the trail, hiking from one end of the island to the other. Expect flowing single-track through forest, rugged capes and a detour to Ersta Battery, a once top-secret Cold War coastal artillery station tucked away in the heart of the island. Then it’s on to Oja’s crowning glory: the Landsort lighthouse at the southern tip, Sweden’s oldest active lighthouse, built in 1689. Tonight, raise a glass to an incredible week on the trail over a farewell dinner at the village restaurant. Then it’s back to the hostel for one final night on the islands.
Day 7
Return to Stockholm, with sea salt in your hair

FAQs
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
There’s one guide for groups of up to 10 guests and two guides for groups of 11 to 14. All group leaders are certified wilderness guides trained in wilderness first aid, and many spend their summers guiding hikes in the archipelago and their winters leading expeditions in the Scandinavian fells. As well as sharing what they know about the islands and the outdoors, they’ll keep you safe and handle anything unexpected, so you can focus on the hiking.
What if things don't go to plan?
Travel in wild places always comes with a little unpredictability. Weather, sea conditions or other local factors may mean your guides need to adjust the itinerary. Safety is always the priority, and your guides know the archipelago inside out. In practice, this might mean changing some hiking routes, switching to more sheltered spots or adjusting the planned distances slightly. Swim spots may also change, and if the sea is particularly rough, you might not be able to get in the water on a given day. The weather is generally stable during the season this trip runs, so severe conditions are unlikely to disrupt the whole itinerary. It’s worth coming with a flexible mindset – the unplanned moments often make the best stories.
Can I leave my excess luggage somewhere?
Yes. You can store anything you don’t need on the trip, including extra luggage, safely and free of charge at your host’s basecamp. Your belongings will be locked in insurance-grade containers marked with your name, ready for you when you get back.
What do I do about drinking water?
The tap water in the archipelago is perfectly safe to drink. You will fill up at your hostel each morning, with refill opportunities during the hikes pointed out by your guides. Please bring a reusable water bottle to carry your own water each day.
Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Stockholm’s food culture reflects its northern climate, island geography and long winters, with preservation techniques like curing, smoking and pickling shaping a cuisine built around fish, root vegetables and seasonal produce. Meals tend to be simple, balanced and often include dairy, grains and seafood, with a growing emphasis on freshness and sustainability. Travellers with dietary requirements generally find Stockholm accommodating, particularly for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets, though traditional dishes can be less flexible. It is usually straightforward with some planning, a guide can help navigate menus and communicate specific needs. For this adventure, the guides carry all food in the kayak from the start, so it is important that you fill in any dietary preferences or allergies on your MBA Passenger Information Form in good time before the trip.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Traditional Swedish cuisine has historically been meat- and fish-based, shaped by a cold climate and short growing season, but a vegetarian undercurrent has always existed in what the land and pantry provided through winter. Staples like potatoes, root vegetables, cabbage, peas, and hearty rye and barley breads formed the backbone of everyday eating, often stretched with dairy. Classic meat-free dishes include raggmunk (potato pancakes) and porridges like havregrynsgröt and risgrynsgröt, while foraged lingonberries, cloudberries, and chanterelles add seasonal variety. A fully vegetarian diet as a conscious choice is a modern development, but historically, traditional bondkost (peasant fare) meals were often naturally meat-free simply because meat was expensive and reserved for Sundays and holidays.
Vegan Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Modern Sweden has embraced veganism strongly. The brand ‘Oatly’ was founded in Lund, but the traditional roots lie in the simple, plant-forward bondkost (peasant fare) that sustained rural households when meat and dairy were scarce.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Our host will do their best, but if you have Coeliac disease, they cannot 100% guarantee no cross-contamination or traces of gluten.
Lactose-free Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.
This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
What is the wild swimming like?
The swims on this trip aren’t about covering distance – think of them as short dips in brisk water along a wild stretch of coastline. The idea is to get out among nature and have a refreshing swim each day. They’re completely optional, so you’re welcome to stay on dry land if you’re here purely for the hiking. Your guides will choose safe spots to get in the water, and some of the hostels have their own direct water access for extra swims or a cold plunge between sauna sessions.
Between May and September, the sea temperature in the Stockholm archipelago ranges from 5°C to 18°C, peaking in July and August. May is especially cold and June is still firmly cold-water territory, so if you feel the cold, you may want to bring neoprene gloves, socks and a rash vest.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with (opens in new tab). You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?

We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website (opens in new tab), where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).
For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information (opens in new tab) and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

See here (opens in new tab) for more info about the Much Better Adventures tribe.
What's the weather like?
This trip runs from May to late September, when the weather in the Stockholm Archipelago is at its best. Daytime temperatures typically range from 20–27°C/68-80°F, and the sea sits between 16–20°C/61-68°F – fresh, but ideal for wild swims.
June brings long daylight hours and cooler nights. July and August are the warmest and most settled months, while September is quieter, with crisp evenings and golden sunsets. Your guides will share daily forecasts and help plan the best routes. Weather can shift quickly – a sunny morning might turn wet or windy, then clear again for a long Scandinavian sunset.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
What's the number?
It works out on average at 75kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
