Key Information

Day 1

Meet your crew

View of Bergen from the water, Norway.

Wave goodbye to the office and head to Bergen, where you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your accommodation in Voss. After settling into your hostel, you can head out to grab dinner locally. If you're feeling brave, you could try a quick dip in the chilly Vangsvatnet Lake before settling in for a good night’s sleep ahead of hitting the water tomorrow.

Day 2

Kayaking the Nærøyfjord

A kayaker paddling along the Nærøyfjord in Norway.

Kayaking

4-5 hours · 12km

Grab breakfast at your hostel before hopping in the van to head to the put-in point at Gudvangen. When you arrive, your guide will get you set up with your wetsuit, kayaking boots, dry bag, waterproof camera/phone box and all of your kayaking gear. You'll have a safety briefing and an introduction to sea kayaking before heading out for your first day of unforgettable paddling down the beautiful Nærøyfjord. You'll stop off along the way for breaks and to admire the scenery, before arriving at the campsite by late afternoon. Kick back and enjoy the stunning scenery before tucking into a hot dinner and making merry around the campfire. If you're feeling up to it, there is the option of going for a short walk to get a better view of the fjord from above.

Day 3

Hike to the highlands 3,900 ft above the fjord

Sunny view of the Aurlandsfjorden in the Norwegian Fjords.

Hiking

10-11hrs · 20.7km · 1530m up · 1530m down

Wake up in a Norwegian paradise and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before packing your bag, ready for the day's hike. Your aim is to reach the Breiskrednosi summit, which is 3,900 ft above the Nærøyfjord and offers a spectacular view of the fjord from above. Drink in the views over the fjord from the top with your group, before heading back down to the campsite. Enjoy dinner around the campfire before another night under the stars.

Day 4

Kayak past cliff faces and waterfalls before heading home

Kayaking

4 - 5 hours · 12km

Continue kayaking north along the Nærøyfjord, exploring magnificent cliffs and remote waterfalls, keeping your eye out for seals along the way. Arrive mid-afternoon at the remote – and totally picturesque – village of Undredal, before heading to the airport in time for your flight home.

What is the food like?

Toasting marshmallows over the campfire in the Norwegian Fjords.

The portions are more than generous, all the food is fresh and any dietary requirements can be met - just tell us your preferences when you make a booking. Dinner and breakfast are prepared by your guide over a campfire, the menu will vary but you can expect things like rice and pasta with fresh vegetables, egg, bacon and sausages. There is also bread and sandwich filler for lunch breaks. Water, tea and coffee are also readily available as well as wine for the evenings.

What is the accommodation like?

An aerial view of a hostel on the fjord edge in Voss, Norwegian Fjords.
Voss

On your first night, you'll be staying in same-sex dorms in a simple, clean hostel in Voss. Occasionally alternative accommodation are provided in cabins at Gudvangen Camping (close to the kayaking base) or in a simple hotel in Brandseth.

View from the tent at dawn looking out over the Naeroyfjord in the Norwegian Fjords.
Fjord Edge

On the second and third night, you'll paddle to a beach and sleep in a tent under the stars. Sleeping mats and sleeping bags are provided, but you can bring your own if you prefer. There is no shower, and toilets are basic to say the least - it is wild camping after all.

Upgrades

If you'd prefer your own room in Voss, your host offers an optional upgrade to a private room at Voss Hostel or alternatively at the 4-star Park Hotel Voss (subject to availability). Park Hotel is conveniently located about 150m from the train station and right on the lakefront. Please see Optional Extras for prices - we recommend that you request this at the time of booking to avoid disappointment.

This trip has been rated as Moderate

You really do not need any kayaking experience. Your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing at the start. You’ll just need reasonable levels of fitness to handle approximately 16 miles of relaxed paddling over two days, a day of hiking and be up for camping out overnight.

The hike is not for beginners and is very challenging, particularly if it is or has been wet. You'll gain over 3,281 feet in elevation during the hike and early in the season (April, May and occasionally early June) there can be snow on the ground (sometimes quite deep) which adds to the challenge. The same can apply late in the season too. We would only recommend this hike if you are an active person with hiking experience. It just takes a bit of time getting up the steep section but don’t worry, it’s no race to the top.

The route is about 6 miles each way, making a total hike of 12.9 miles. The elevation is sea level to 3,901 feet and quite steep in places. The hike is about 8 to 11 hours return, with an awesome view from the ridge at the top to the fjord below.

What if i need to skip an activity?

There should be no problem with staying back at camp during the hiking day for someone not wanting to hike. It may also be possible to just come along for the first part of the hike and then return to the camp, this does depend on where the group is actually camped as this may affect options. Alternatively, you could consider booking the Kayak and Wild Camp Norwegian Fjords trip instead.

What will I need to carry?

For the hike, you'll only need to carry a small daypack with personal items, spare clothing layers, snacks, a packed lunch, and a water bottle. See the Gear List and FAQs for further details about packing and luggage.

The weather in summer is generally very comfortable for kayaking and camping, with temperatures of 59-68 degrees Fahrenheit, sometimes more. April and May typically see the lowest rainfall but days are cooler (typically 50-59 degrees Fahrenheit) and nights usually hover a few degrees above freezing. Snow cover often persists on higher ground into April and May (and occasionally early June) and is likely to be encountered along a significant portion of the hike (your host has a stock of snowshoes if needed). We recommend joining this trip in July and August for the warmest temperatures, but it’s great all summer.

In any month it can rain and get chilly at night so waterproofs, good hiking boots, a warm sweater and some thermals are vital. This time of year daylight in Norway is constant with only 2–3 hours of darkness in the evenings.

What an experience and such a stunning country 🇳🇴

My partner and I did the 3 day kayaking, camping and hiking; an epic and memorable trip ❤️ We had an amazing group and Reid our guide was simply brilliant, knowledgeable, engaging, enthusiastic and a pretty good chef as well 👍🏼

The trip was well organised from pick up to end, the scenery was awe inspiring, the kayaking was amazing, well looked after and felt safe throughout, the camping was good (a thicker bed roll and it would have been perfect) the hike was a challenge but so absolutely worth it.

Would recommend this to anyone who wants to see the wilder side of the fjords 👍🏼

Beautiful scenery, fun activities and zero stress as everything was organised so smoothly, we wanted for nothing. Our guide Lydia was great, keeping an experienced eye on everyone, helping and advising where needed. Food was simple, but tasty and plentiful (much needed for the calories burnt kayaking and on the hike).

Excellent Norwegian kayake adventure weekend!

Cannot recommend this enough. If you like being outdoors and active and don’t mind camping do it. Norway is a spectacular place and what better way than kayake along the fjords, hike , camp, eat really well, drink wine and water from Odin himself! A couple of tips - as someone who has only used poles before once I really appreciated them on this hike - it is not moderate so be ready. A sleeping mask - it does not get dark! Your own dry bag for extras, there’s room. If you’re going when possible snow make sure you have bungees or clips on your rucksack to carry the snow shoes. A great group of people to help keep everyone going and in high spirits! Our guide, Mike was spot on!! Food he prepared was tasty and much welcomed after long days. There was always plenty of food and some. Made sure everyone knew what was happening and made sure no one was left behind. Always with little nuggets of info on the way around. A well oiled trip and would definitely book again. Thanks again Mike!

Unforgettable Adventure through the Majestic Norwegian Fjords
Unforgettable Adventure through the Majestic Norwegian Fjords

I recently returned from a three-day adventure in the Norwegian fjords, and I can't recommend this experience enough! Our journey began with kayaking to our wild camping surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery I’ve ever encountered. All the equipment provided to us was clean, dry, and of excellent quality. Waking up to the serene beauty of the fjords was simply magical. Each day was a new adventure as we kayaked and glided past majestic cliffs and cascading waterfalls, and wildlife, including seals popped up to say "hi". Hiking through the snowy landscape was another highlight of the trip. The trails offered stunning views of the countryside, and I had to keep pinching myself that i was in Norway’s breathtaking wilderness. As we hiked, the temperatures changed, and I would suggest plenty of layers as the temperatures do vary. We swam in the fjord and drank water from mountain streams. The meals provided were not only varied but also delicious and plentiful. I have a nut allergy, and there was a real sense of caring to ensure that all meals were nut-free, which reassured me. After a long day of kayaking and hiking, we enjoyed tasty meals by the campfire as we shared stories, photos, strava stats and laughter with our group, who i now consider friends. Our guide played a crucial role in making this holiday unforgettable. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, he ensured our safety while also sharing fascinating insights about the region’s history, flora, and fauna. Overall, my three-day trip in the Norwegian fjords was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and laughter. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exhilarating yet enriching experience in the heart of nature. I can’t wait to return!

Unforgettable Adventure in the Fjords!

From the very first moment, we felt completely taken care of. This three-day journey—two days of kayaking through the majestic fjords and a breathtaking hike to a summit on day two—was nothing short of magical. The panoramic view from the top, with the fjord sprawling below us, left us absolutely speechless.

Emily, our guide, was phenomenal—knowledgeable, warm, and clearly passionate about what she does. She timed every break perfectly, leading us to quiet, hidden spots for snacks and drinks that were both plentiful and thoughtfully prepared. And the food? Incredible! She cooked hearty, delicious dinners over a campfire, with generous portions that catered beautifully to vegetarians like us.

The gear—kayaks, tents, sleeping bags—was all in excellent condition, making the experience smooth and comfortable from start to finish.

If you’re even slightly considering this trip—do it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience.

I had the most incredible

I had the most incredible time kayaking and hiking through the fjords or Norway! Camping was a lot more comfortable than expected and the food was delicious! My team was so much fun and our guide Jonny was really knowledgeable and patient! I strongly recommend this trip to anyone looking for an adventure with a lot of physical activity and incredible views.

Truly one of the best adventures of my life. From sea kayaking in tranquil (and less so) waters and camping on the edge of a fjord to waking up to the most amazing sights and climbing a mountain and seeing this best views from the top, this trip gave me a lifetime of memories in just three days. Emily, our guide, was faultless, thoughtful and so so organised. She totally made the trip. As a solo traveller, I felt welcome from the moment I met the group. I genuinely loved everything, including the camp food, the different hiking terrain (from bog hopping to walking across snow), the waterfalls, the hot chocolate, the wine by the campfire and the moments when all your can hear is nature all around. My body felt so invigorated by the whole experience and my heart is still somewhere floating in the Fjord by Gudvangen. Thank you MBA.

Hard but amazing!!
Hard but amazing!!

Arrivals day was a bit of down time - could use the time better e. g. provide everyone with 22l dry bag for trip to allow us time to pack properly instead of rushing. This is the only critique. Our instructor Reid, was great, clear from the start, relaxed and competent. We paddled the Fjords, and saw a White tailed Eagle 🦅. Camping on the beach was beautiful and waking up to the view was amazing! The hike was very hard - you definitely need to be walking fit! The view from the top was spectacular! Final day, paddle home, all tired all quiet, we visited Odennsfossen, a large powerful waterfall, the woke us up!! Amazing!! We faced challenging weather conditions for a spell and then it cleared up. The group was a bunch of amazing people from all walks of life and all ages. Brilliant to meet like minded souls who made the adventure so good. The guys at Nordic Adventures were very helpful and friendly, everyone spoke English.

Wow. Just wow.
Wow. Just wow.

This trip is epic. The Fjords are just breathtaking, you think it can’t get any better but then you go round a corner and it does. Our guide Reid was just fabulous- did so much for us, always checking in to make sure everyone was ok but also just having fun with the group- it was clear he thought he had the best job in the world. Yes we got a bit rained on but they have all the gear and this is Norway so to be expected. You do need a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy it I’d say but the pain is 100% worth it. Surpassed all my expectations- am currently browsing other MBA trips in the airport on my way home!! Book it, you will not be disappointed.

A fabulous experience

What a fabulous trip!! I am writing this from the airport on my way home and I am already missing the beautiful scenery and the great group of people I met! I am a solo traveller and always get a little nervous when booking a trip like this but I needn't of worried. The welcome I received was warm and everyone was incredibly friendly especially our guide/chef/best buddy David who always had great energy and worked so hard to make sure we all had everything we needed! The trip and activities were incredible. The scenery was breathtaking and we saw it all in the best way possible by kayak and hiking up to the top of the mountain! I highly recommend this experience. All I would say is bring a thick sleeping mat and don't forget a pillow 😊

This trip completely over delivered against all expectations. We were blessed with great weather throughout our 3 days. Our guide Johnn was fantastic. The prefect blend of being our expert guide whist also allowing us to have our own experience. There were 10 in our group and the Unity was great. Camping location was beautiful, like a small beach in the fjord with crazy beautiful scenery and great for a cold dip. For food Jonny grilled over a fire one night and made a curry in pots the next after a long hike. The hike is moderate with a challenging final couple of hours (we needed snow shoes for last hour) but your rewarded with wonderous views. I've done a few hut to hut hikes over 5 days through the alps and this is up there with those experiences and I cannot recommend enough. Couple of tips if you can take a compact but quality sleeping mat as those supplied were very basic and if you don't want to share with strangers in the hotel on the first night the request that.

Emma was a very enthusiastic guide. She cared for our group and looked out for us throughout. The kayaking was beautiful - it really does feel otherworldly at points. The hike was certainly challenging rather than modeate, but doable for anyone with a decent level of fitness. The campsite was great and the food was excellent. We were very lucky with our group, which added to how special the trip felt. Highly recommend.

Hike kayak camp in the fjords

Got picked up from vose from the guide named Callum, made our own way from Bergan! Some of the members Running late as people were told different times to meet in the lounge. Picked up equipment wetsuits etc put into our groups! Dave was the man! then to kayaks, packed kayaks then hit the fjords! Windy day, wasent to bad until Callum started having a melt down about people going to far ahead and to far to one side, understand but we’ve just been shown a map of where we are going, probs for health and safety reasons but their is a way to speak to people and especially when you can over hear them speaking about you behind your back! Kind of put a sour taste in my mouth so avoided interacting with him. . . finally made it to camp, put up the tents and Dave made food for the evening! Toilet was a long drop, ovs in the wild but hand sanitiser should be available for next time Day 2 Next morning kayaked then hiked, different levels of fitness here, so always walk ahead to wait a lot to allow others to catch up, kinda throws you off your pace. . same as in descending, waiting for other members, I had it in my head to swim in the fjord that evening with a bit of sun but by the time we got back 8-9 hours of walking sun was hidden by the mountains so made it that extra cold and thought it was pointless by then. Day 3 kayaked back to the beginning and Dekitted Over all, ok experience, Dave was a top lad, knew his stuff!

Reply from Much Better Adventures  (30 May 2025)

We appreciate your honest feedback. We’re glad that you found your guide Dave to be professional and supportive throughout your trip and enjoyed your experience overall.

Regarding the kayaking section—this took place in windy conditions and your safety was our team’s top priority. One of our host’s other guides, Callum, stepped in to redirect your route away from a known rockfall area. We understand that the tone may have come across strongly in the moment, and we’re sorry for any ill feelings this left.

It sounds like Dave managed your group well on the hike, which your group completed faster than average despite some variations in fitness levels. Unfortunately, the steep-sided mountains surrounding the fjords mean that the sun is often lost early at this time of year.

Our host has also addressed your point about campsite hygiene—fixed hand sanitiser dispensers have now been purchased and will be installed straight away.

This is an incredible trip, with amazing views and in an unspoilt and very special location. Just know that you’ll get picked up in a cramped minibus and stay in a student hostel where you make your own dorm bed, and build your own tent. But no pain no gain, it’s great value for money and what is made to seem like a unique location. Which is what you want. Would highly recommend.

This is a short but worthwhile trip. Kayak-hike-kayak worked out to be a perfect combination to enjoy the fjords from the water, to give your arms a break on the hike and then give your legs a break when kayaking! Being fit for this trip is recommended. The campsites are wonderful, on the "beaches" of the fjords with stunning views. The food was great and catered well for dietary requirements.

Your insurance should include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment and the specific activities involved on your adventure. We also strongly recommend it includes cancellation and curtailment insurance, should you be unable to join your trip for specific reasons such as illness. Our recommended travel insurance provider is Campbell Irvine, as their insurance offers all of the above.

Visas

Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 47kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

The trip will be split into groups of up to 12 people. Let us know if you are traveling with friends, and we will make sure you are in the same group as friends who have booked.

Our local host operates multiple trips starting on the same date, so for your included group transfers between Bergen and Voss, you'll share a coach. When you are dropped off at your lodging in Voss, your host will let you know who will be in your group so you can introduce yourselves and perhaps grab some dinner together. On your first night, although the rooms at the hostel in Voss are multi-share, you won't necessarily be sharing with people from your group due to room configurations and gender mix. When you arrive at the kayaking base in Gudvangen the next day, you'll separate into your group of up to 12 and hit the water.

One of the most beautiful places in the world. A fjord is a deep, narrow, and elongated part of the sea that stretches inland for miles, winding around mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs. The fjords were formed by the giant glacier tongues and shaped over several ice ages.

There are plenty of kayaks available for you to use, with a mix of singles and doubles depending on your preference.

You're free to bring any luggage or suitcase you wish with you to Voss. On Day 2, you'll check out of your accommodation with all of your luggage and transfer by bus to the host's kayaking base in Gudvangen. Here, you'll be given a 22-liter dry bag to pack everything into for your kayaking, camping and hiking adventure (excluding your sleeping bag and sleeping mat, unless you bring your own). You will be given a hard waterproof case for your camera/phone too, and you'll want to keep certain things handy such as your water bottle, cap, sunscreen and snacks. You'll need to pack light as your dry bag has to fit into the hatched compartments (bulkheads) of the kayak, along with the group's food and equipment which will be shared among the kayaks. The remainder of your luggage that you don't need on the adventure can be left behind at the kayaking base in Gudvangen, where it will be safely stored until your return.

Don't stress, your host will explain all during the briefing.

Absolutely. The train is 45 minutes faster than the included transfer and is one of the most spectacular journeys you can take by rail. Here’s how:

From the airport, get the Flybussen airport shuttle to Bergen bus station, or the Bybanen (city light rail - cheaper but slower). Buses to/from the airport run every 10-15 minutes, and cost roughly 90NOK ($9) each way. The Bybanen is approx 40NOK ($4).

From the bus station it’s a few minutes walk to the train station. A taxi from the airport to train station can be booked for between 350-550NOK ($35-$55), depending on traffic.

Trains run regularly throughout the day and don’t need to be reserved in advance, with a single ticket to Voss costing roughly 200NOK ($20). Trains to Oslo stop at Voss.

You can buy tickets at the ticket office up until 5:30 PM, or from ticket machines. If you want to check the schedule or book online head here.

Voss Hostel is a 12 minute walk from the station. Head out of the main station and turn right on the road. Follow the road until just before the roundabout (about 2,460 ft) then take the left turning, following the road for 656 ft more - straight to the hostel.

For the return, make your life easy by jumping on the already included transfers to Bergen Airport.

We can recommend the following from budget to high price. There are many other hotels, however these are selected for their convenience and/or from experience:

Accommodation in Voss

Accommodation in Bergen

Here’s what your local guide has to say on drones:

We don't really encourage bringing drones on this trip for several reasons:

  • There are limited times when there would be opportunities for flying the drone.
  • We need to keep the campsites free of drone traffic in agreement with the landowners.
  • There is often livestock in some areas that may be affected, and we need to maintain a good relationship with the farmers.
  • We have seen some people frustrated by drone traffic and can understand this.

That said, we do not prohibit drone use as it is outside our legislation. As long as it does not interfere with the issues mentioned above and you can fit the drone in the kayak, it will be OK to bring it along. Just please discuss the use with other group members sometime after meeting up with them on the first morning to settle this.

The best way to meet your host is to take the train from Oslo center to Voss (not Bergen), and then head to Voss Hostel. See the FAQ on how to get to Voss Hostel from the airport and just follow the directions from Voss station to the hostel. The train ride takes about 6.5 hours and goes through some amazing scenery.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
