Stomp to the summit of Pico de las Nieves, the highest point on the island at a hefty 1949m

Bask in a subtropical climate, traversing one of the sunniest islands in the world, and cool off in coastal rock pools on remote beaches

Explore this biodiverse island on little-used hiking trails, experiencing dramatic mountain ranges, sunken calderas and epic ocean views

Key Information

Day 1

Welcome to Gran Canaria

Morning views of the sunrise breaking over Barranco de Guayadeque, Gran Canaria

After meeting your hosts, your Canarian adventure begins with a short drive to Arinaga, a hidden coastal gem with a beautiful beach where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. Depending on arrival times, it may be possible to take a stroll in the historic town of Agüimes. Later, you'll head inland to the tranquil Barranco de Guayadeque for the first night, staying in a unique cave house overlooking a dramatic gorge. You’ll dine in a traditional cave restaurant with your guides and fellow adventurers, learning about the exciting journey ahead.

Day 2

On top of the island

Gran Canaria landscape, Los Berrazales canyon, Spain.

Hiking

9-10hrs · 21km · 1300m up · 790m down

The trek begins in the historic Guayadeque Valley, shaped by volcanic activity and rich in diverse flora and fauna. Today’s focus is on understanding Gran Canaria's volcanic origins and exploring three types of calderas (craters): explosive, erosive, and collapsed. On the ascent, your guide will explain the geological forces and unique landscape features. The route flows through cactus fields and pine forests, and then up a steep volcanic mountain pass into the La Cumbre region – the highest part of the island. You’ll reach Pico de Las Nieves, the highest point in Gran Canaria at 1950m – and a great lunch spot with a view. Afterwards, continue to your hotel in Cruz de Tejeda to end the day with a beautiful sunset over the sea of clouds, a perfect ending to a first day of exploration.

Day 3

To Roque Nublo, the 'Spanish Stonehenge'

Hikers on a barren trail to Roque Nublo, Gran Canaria, Spain

Hiking

9-10hrs · 19km · 1100m up · 1100m down

Today's hike through the UNESCO-listed sacred mountains around Tejeda begins with a visit to the charming village of Tejeda itself, before you hit the trail up to Roque Nublo. This mysterious monolith was sacred to the pre-Hispanic Guanche people. Take a break at the base of Roque Nublo to enjoy lunch amidst stunning 360-degree views. After exploring the area's moon-like terrain and learning more about the island's rich cultural heritage, you'll return to the comfortable rural hotel in Cruz de Tejeda for a relaxing evening.

Day 4

Caves, volcanoes and forests

View of white village houses with terracotta roofs from Tejeda, Gran Canaria, Spain

Hiking

6hrs · 11km · 400m up · 900m down

Enjoy a more leisurely day today, but a wonderfully varied one in terms of terrains and views. You'll first pass through the highest caves on the island at Cuevas del Caballero, rich with stories and history. Continue towards Montañón Negro, one of the youngest volcanoes on Gran Canaria, where you'll gain insights into the island's volcanic past. As you cross to the lush northern side, a region that contrasts with the arid south, you'll trek through the Laurisilva Forest, a rare remnant of subtropical laurel forests found in Macaronesia. Arriving at a quaint village oasis for the night, unwind before enjoying a cheese and wine-tasting evening.

Day 5

Ecosystems and local life

Views towards the west coast of Gran Canaria, Spain

Hiking

8hrs · 18km · 500m up · 1400m down

The morning begins with a hike into yet another new landscape, helping Gran Canaria live up to its nickname of ‘a continent in miniature’. You’ll descend into the green and humid gorge of Barranco Hondo, leading to one of the most fertile valleys of the island – the Agaete Valley, bursting with an abundance of flora and fauna. Before arriving at the coastal fishing village of Agaete, enjoy a tour and tasting session at a local coffee plantation, learning about coffee production through permaculture principles. End your journey at the coastal town of Agaete, staying at the 4-star Hotel Puerto de Las Nieves. Unwind in the spa before celebrating with a farewell dinner, reflecting on the adventure with your fellow travellers.

Day 6

Time to chill...

Playa de Guayedra, Tamadaba Natural Park near Agaete, Gran Canaria

Begin your final day with an optional yoga or pilates class to stretch those tired muscles. After a leisurely breakfast, take a refreshing swim in the natural volcanic rock pools known as 'Las Salinas' or explore the village of Agaete. Enjoy an early lunch featuring fresh local fish or simply relax on the black-stone beach before transferring to the airport (a morning airport drop-off will be offered for those with earlier flights).

This selection of accommodations ensures a relaxed and comfortable end to each day of exploration, providing a good night’s rest in the heart of nature.

Upgrades

Due to the small size of the accommodation and limited room availability on this trip, there is no option to upgrade to a private room. As this is a rural trek, options are extremely limited re where to stay with a group.

This trip has been rated as Challenging

This trek requires a good level of fitness. You must be capable of hiking all day up paths of moderate difficulty with steep, loose sections. The walking is non-technical, but the rough terrain and large elevation changes will make the going quite difficult in parts. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. You'll have the support of the host's guiding team every step of the way.

Gran Canaria enjoys year-round warmth and sunshine with very little seasonal variation. Summers are hot and dry while winters are just slightly cooler, with the potential for a few showers. The island’s southerly location is on the same latitude as the Sahara, meaning it is much hotter than mainland Spain in the winter. However, it will get cooler at night, and once in the high interior of the island, the temperature can drop by quite a few degrees.

While hiking you can expect fairly consistent daytime temperatures of 18-24ºC and mostly clear skies; however, in the winter it can drop as low as 5ºC at night time. It can also be windy on the top of the peaks, and as you will be passing through different microclimates, it's not unusual to experience days where you will be hiking in 15ºC in the morning and 25ºC in the afternoon, possibly hotter depending on the departure date. As you will be getting up pretty high there is, of course, the chance of some showers in the mountains but these are rare, short and sharp if they do occur. The sea temperature will be approx 18-26ºC, so very swimmable in the winter months.

What an unforgettable experience!

We were blessed with perfect weather conditions on this 6 day experience. Despite the baking midday heat, the hiking was challenging but doable. The summits, views, experiences as well as the destinations make that quad burn worth it.The biggest commendations go out to the guides, Rachel, Mike and Diego and their organisation of the trip. Their local knowledge of the island and expertise are outstanding. It was refreshing to be able to really enjoy the hike while Rachel leads the pack safely to summmit and everywhere in between. Enclosed by our safeguarding Diego at the rear. And then like an angel in disguise, there is Mike whose logisitcs, water, lunch, snacks and friendship kept us motivated throughout the day. The attention to detail within the accommodation by the hosts and guides was impeccable. The combination of the experience above leaves me with no doubt in recommending this excursion!

An exceptional trip in an extraordinary place

This trip is truly exceptional - the guides are not only extremely knowledgeable about the history of the island and a great support at the tougher parts of the hike, but are fantastic and fun people to spend time with. The hike is challenging but in the best way, and balanced perfectly with relaxation, fun and surprises along the way. And the VIEWS… extraordinary. Don’t think about booking this trip - just do it.

Wow, what a fabulous trip. I never leave reviews, ever, but I must. From beginning to end- we were thoroughly looked after, our guides (Ben/ Michel) were absolutely ace. I wasn’t sure about doing this trip, but seriously though it was amazing, great accommodation, great food, stunning scenery and fabulous hiking and side trips- just book it….

Not to be missed!

This was my first MBA trip and it couldn’t have been a better experience. The hiking was challenging at times, more due to the heat and the long days than anything else, but the amazing views are well worth it. We stayed in some really pretty places, and the food was good and always plentiful. Our guides Rachael, Benjamin, Michele and Diego were brilliant. Everything from start to finish was so well organised, communication was great, and they had thought of everything to make sure we all had a good time. We had a lovely, fun group of people which made the experience even better.

What an incredible trip! The

What an incredible trip! The scenery is stunning and incredibly varied, and the hiking hugely fun - the ‘challenging’ rating feels right as no individual hike is particularly extreme, but several days of it in a row will add up!

The views you get are completely unique, and will leave a lasting impression.

The guides are the real star of the show though, who were so welcoming and engaging that they immediately felt like old friends and really helped a group of strangers bond, along with doing a great job of pacing the days and looking out for everyone in the group. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we were exceptionally well looked after!

The organisation and logistics was expertly handled as well. Considering that lunch is freshly prepared each day; lots of fresh water is always available; that we stayed in 4(!) different incredible locations; and we even had a cheese and wine night, it’s a real accomplishment to make it feel seamless. One of the best parts of the trip was that basically everything is taken care of - meaning you can focus on the hiking and having a fantastic time, without having to worry about the tricky details.

I had a great time, and would always recommend this trip (and the team of Rachael, Benjamin, Mike and Diago!) to anyone else!

Amazing trip!

I have had one of THE best weeks im my life. Met amazing group of people and saw the Gran Canaria Island through a different lense than just going for a beach holiday. The whole organisation, program and the food was impeccable. If anyone hesitates to book this trip- do yourself a favour and do book it right away.

One of the best trips I have ever been on. My 3rd MBA and it will hard to be topped. Our guides were amazing, Benji, Rachael and Mike. They gave the trip a relaxed and awesome atmosphere which went down well amongst the group. Climbo, there company, is extremely lucky to have them. We had great weather, beautiful accommodation, and awesome landscapes. We were a group of 12 individuals who all clicked instantly. Hiking from one place to another feels like a proper adventure. The first 2 hikes are pretty tough, but if you feel capable of hiking a long distance, then it is certainly doable. Overall an experience that will live long in the memory. If you’re thinking about doing this, just go for it!

One of the best small group hikes I’ve ever been on

This was a wonderful trip; the island is spectacular, with rugged mountains on one side and green forest on the other. Our leaders Benjamin and Rachael, and our driver Micha, were amazing - Micha in particular took great care of me when I didn’t have the energy for some segments of the trip.

Helena H.(April 2024)
Brilliant guides and a fun trip

A brilliant trip from start to finish - really well organised, including detailed pre-departure information. Benjamin, Mike and Rachael really went above and beyond - looking after us so well, leading the hikes and ensuring that the group had an excellent time. The accommodation is good, the walks are very doable, the scenery is beautiful and it was a great trip all-round. Thank you!

Our guides were all great fun & also very helpful, doing everything they could to meet our needs, even in some challenging / unforeseen situations! The hiking routes were really pretty, a really different landscape to most. There was tonnes of food! The accomodation exceeded my expectations. One day we were unable to hike to due a calima (sand in the air from the Sahara desert) which was a shame, but they still kept us entertained by showing us around some caves and we went to a museum. Also if you get the chance, there’s a spa hotel just down the road from one of the places you stay, definitely go there it’s absolutely stunning and well worth the money! Like €40 for 2 hours or something. It was dreamy! Great trip overall!

The best trip of my life

Our hiking trip was easily the best trip I’ve ever been on. The accommodations were interesting and more than sufficient, the food was fantastic, and the hikes themselves were a fulfilling challenge. For various reasons, this should have been a nightmare trip for me, but the guides Benjamin and Rachael were heavensent. Benjamin in particular was part personal trainer, part philosopher, part therapist, and got me up and down the mountains in spite of my severe fear of heights and dismal physical condition. The entire team (special mention goes to Mike, who dealt with logistics) running the trip went above and beyond, juggling a million things, and putting so much of themselves into everything they did. I’m extremely grateful.

An amazing trip to beautiful Gran Canaria, thanks to the absolute dream team of Benjamin, Rachael and Mike. They went above and beyond to make the trip special. The group were amazing too. MBA say it’s challenging and it is, so you have to be fit. I was the slowest in what was a very fast group and so I really recommend being able to hike distances to get maximum enjoyment out of the trip. Racheal and Benjamin were amazing keeping the group together as well so I never felt rushed. We had great weather (all the seasons at one point), the accommodation was basic but really comfortable and the food was ridiculously good. So much food and so yummy. Would recommend this trip to everyone! Loved it all. Thanks Benji and the tuppers! :-)

A brilliant hike across a spectacular volcanic island, a ‘petrified storm’ as its landscape has been described. Benjamin, Rachael and Mike were outstanding hosts, highly professional, a real credit to the company, and logistics were so thoroughly dealt with by Ana. Very enjoyable, and had the luck of having the best group ever to walk around with. Be aware - the weather IS incredibly changeable - the climate of Gran Canaria is very unique. Thank you!

This trip is absolutely wonderful. Each day is different and Gran Canaria is beautiful - it was very lush when we were there, so lots of greenery and wild flowers. Accommodation is very good as is the food. Would highly recommend.

This was an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish! The hikes were varied each day and allowed us to experience all the beautiful scenery Gran Canaria has to offer. I liked that there was a mix of inclines and varied terrain. It allowed us to find some amazing viewpoints that were tucked away from the usual tourist spots. The views were just incredible; photos don't do it justice! Benjamin, Rachael & Michele were so friendly and accommodating. They are really knowledgeable and helpful. They provided lots of interesting information about the flora, fauna and folklore of the island. Everything was organised and efficient and they went above and beyond to make sure everyone was looked after. There were some lovely surprises thrown in too which really added to the trip. Their relaxed and warm approach made this a stress free experience. The group made this trip for me! A week spent laughing, chatting, eating and exploring with incredible people in the sunshine (& the rain!) was so enjoyable and exceeded my expectations in every way. I'm already looking forward to choosing my next trip!

100% recommend

As someone who has done many group trips in the past but who was feeling a bit rusty, this trip was a perfect reintroduction to group hiking. The itinerary is great as the mix of challenging longer days followed by opportunities to rest meant I still felt like I had been able to push myself but also have a holiday in the process. The landscape was beautiful and varied - pine forests, lava fields and jaw-dropping views all along the way. But the success of the trip lies with the fantastic guides Benjamin, Mike and Rachel. They ran the trip with amazing efficiency, giving the assurance we were very well looking after at every stage, all with good humour and demonstrating a clear passion for this wonderful island.

It’s hard to sun up quite how good this trip was - from stunning scenery to undoubtedly one of the best team guiding and coordinating

Our group dynamics were very special, albeit I believe Benjamin Rachel and Mikele would make every trip one you’d want to repeat - expertly pacing the group, seamlessly gelling group dynamics, among so much more.

The scenery was breathtaking, hikes a fantastic mix of satisfactory hard to make you wonder momentarily “what on earth am I doing” before breaking to a plateau or peak to relish the journey as much as destination.

So much more I could say, but will leave it there. If you’re sitting on the fence, stop hesitating and book

I've done a few group trips over the past few years but this has definitely been my favourite so far! Everything was really well organised and everyone was always aware of what was happening each day. The walking was challenging but very achievable and it was nice to have the escape points as an option. The amazing views also made the long days worthwhile! Make sure to take lots of layers, the micro climates in the mountains really can catch you out! Benjamin, Rachael and Michele were great guides and made everyone feel so welcome. I wouldn't necessarily have considered Gran Canaria before I saw this trip but it's become one of my favourite places so far. I would recommend this trip to anyone!

I enjoyed this trip but

I enjoyed this trip but I didn't feel like it was worth the money I paid. The accommodation was basic, for two nights we had a room where we were in the eaves so we couldn't stand up straight. The food was tasty but again very cheap to prepare. Lunch was often pasta in sauce with some vegetables. I just don't see where the money was spent. The guides did a great job during the walk making us all feel safe and looked after. In other ways communication was lacking. I wanted to arrange an extension on the trip and finding out if the drop off location could be altered before we went was very difficult. In the end I had to wait until we arrived and ask the guides. We were encouraged to buy water from the restaurants for our next walking day which didn't feel very sustainable. I expected water to be included on a walking trip. The guides didn't help with paying for the drinks on the first day which resulted in someone paying for all of them. We had a minibus that was too small to fit us all in so they had to run multiple shuttles. I enjoyed the overall experience but based on this trip and lack of value for money I wouldn't book with MBA again.

An excellent adventure

This is an excellent trip. The team - Benjamin, Michel & Rachael - go above and beyond to look after everyone. The hikes are long on some days but perfectly doable if you take your time and the paths are good. The little extras they put on really help the group to bond. Be aware that you need WhatsApp and data roaming to get information during the trip. The accommodation is basic but clean and comfortable ….except the hostal in Agaete on the last night…. needs to improve its hygiene standards! But only one night and the socialising is at a lovely Finca nearby. Highly recommend

The best experience of my life - book it!!!

For anyone looking at taking some time away from the grind and to go on a solo adventure without their friends, partner, family or whoever; this is definitely the trip for you!

I’d never braved travelling alone before, but I’ll now do it every year, especially if I can find winter sun like we’ve just had!

MBA thought of everything and were so accommodating! They picked me and the others hikers up from our various hotels or the airport, back n forth until we were all together. And then the adventure began.

The group were amazing, all inspirational and beautiful people, and I know we’ll stay in touch. And our guides, Ben, Rachael, and Mike were utterly brilliant… Definitely feeling home sick for them and Gran Canaria now.

I’d love to give a review that details how amazing this adventure was, but I don’t want to spoil all the surprises, as they really do put so much effort, heart and thought into the planning of this trip. The hikes are the perfect level of difficulty: You feel a great sense of achievement at the end, but it doesn’t quite get to the point where you want to give up. It was about 15 miles a day on 2-3 of the days and around 10-13 on others. Some extremely uphill, some extremely down, and every terrain imaginable - some you just can’t quite believe your eyes… My heart aches just thinking about it.

Every detail was meticulously planned and thought out. At times it was really very touching. I lost count of how many ‘moments’ I had, and the happy tears (🫣), not to mention the sad ones when it was all over.

I booked this trip on a whim after going through an extremely tough time for some months, and was looking for a way to find ‘me’ again, and basically put my pieces back together. Well it did that, and so much more. It changed me beyond what I could ever have imagined and in ways I’ve always admired in other people. From the bottom of my heart, thank you MBA, the Climbo crew, and of course Gran Canaria itself. I’ve taken so much from this experience and just know life’s going to be very different from here on out. ❤️💪🏼

My advise if you plan on booking - relax and go with the flow. Enjoy relinquishing all decisional responsibility to the guides and embrace the unknown. It’s far more fun to not know what’s coming! Honestly, I can’t say enough about how wonderful this really was. Book it, you will not regret it!!

My Best Adventure (yet... more to follow)

This was my first MBA trip, and the first time traveling solo, but it will certainly not be the last! I loved this trip! The hikes, the guides (Benjamin, Rachel, Mike), the other activities we had, the food ofcourse.. it was just amazing, I've never had any experience in my live that compares to this.

On day one I met my group which were fun, likeminded people, with in general a sporty background (age range 21-50). This made the hikes great since we were al in the same kind of fitness level. We slept in a mountain! when you wake up you are surounded by other mountains, if that doesn't give you the feeling of vacation I don't know what does!

I could go into so much more details about this trip, but honestly you'd have to experience it for yourself, and I highly recommend it. It really feels like this was the best vacation I have ever had. I'd only wish I had chosen to stay a little longer on the island to explore a bit more (so if you can I would advise it, there is so much to explore and the guides have a lot of good recommendations ;))

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 148kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Your host in Gran Canaria ensures a maximum guide-to-participant ratio of 1:9, ensuring a high level of support and expert guidance during the trip. For extra convenience, a dedicated support vehicle will accompany you throughout the whole journey, carrying your luggage, providing emergency assistance, and even enabling you to skip challenging sections if needed.

Your overnight luggage will be transported with you in the van each day.

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely high during the times of year when this trip operates. High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep cool as best possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Very high temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at cooler temperatures. People may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

You can fill your bottles up at the guesthouses every day and your host will provide water stops at most lunch spots. The water on Gran Canaria is perfectly safe to drink - the locals mostly choose not to as it has been treated from the sea so contains minimum minerals and sometimes a slight chlorine taste. This can be eradicated with a cordial or similar to add to your bottle if you like. Your host will also provide mineral water from 5ltr bottles should you choose not to drink the water.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our recommended travel insurance provider is Campbell Irvine.

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures and you are required to provide your policy information before departing.

Your insurance should include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment and the specific activities involved on your adventure. We also strongly recommend it includes cancellation and curtailment insurance, should you be unable to join your trip for specific reasons such as illness.

We fully endorse Campbell Irvine as their insurance offers all of the above, so get in touch with them or call on 020 7938 1734 to get your insurance sorted. We suggest that you book travel insurance as soon as you book your adventure, just to cover you for any last-minute life changes. We know you’re an active lot and injuries do happen!

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
