Set sail on a silent boat into the fjords, eyes open for Norway’s famous winter residents, the orca and humpback whale

Drive a husky pack through the alpine tundra and paddle the wintry waters of the Arctic Capital

Bed down in a sleek, Nordic hotel on the waterfront and enjoy some of the best views in Tromsø from its rooftop bar

Featured as one of the ‘Best Northern Lights Tours’ by The Times

Key Information

Day 1

Arrive in Tromsø and sail beneath the aurora

Northern Lights Watching

3.5hrs

Head to your hotel in Tromsø, settle into your luxurious base and take a stroll around the city if you have time. This evening you’ll wrap up for your first aurora chase, heading out on a shared catamaran excursion into the fjords surrounding Tromsø. Undoubtedly one of the most unique and comfortable ways to witness the northern lights, your skipper and crew will navigate the Arctic waters far from any light pollution whilst you watch the skies and, fingers-crossed, see plenty of aurora action.

Day 2

Whale watching

Wildlife Watching

7-8hrs

After breakfast you’ll hit the water again, keeping your eyes peeled for your next natural wonder. Every year, from November to January, humpback whales and orcas gather in the Norwegian fjords to feast on herring during the rough winter months. You'll hop aboard a special hybrid-electric boat, which is silent to minimise disturbance to the whales. Whilst this excursion isn't exclusive to Much Better Adventurers, there are multiple decks with plenty of space to get a great view, and if you're incredibly lucky, you may even see a humpback whale breaching.

Day 3

Kayak the fjords, chase the lights

Kayaking

2-3hrs

Northern Lights Watching

6-8hrs

Head back out into the fjords - this time by kayak. Your host will kit you out with everything you need for winter kayaking in the calm waters around Tromsø. Keep a lookout for more Arctic wildlife, such as eagles and seals. Warm up back in Tromsø and in the early evening, grab your camera and chase the northern lights by road (shared excursion), venturing out to the spots with the highest chance to witness the aurora borealis dance in the sky above. You'll have a warm meal and tell stories around the bonfire before tucking back up in the hotel in the early hours after an amazing evening.

Day 4

Dog sledding and goodbye Tromsø

Dog Sledding

1.5hrs

Tuck into a final breakfast before heading over to Tisnes, on the other side of the fjord from Tromsø. On arrival at the kennels, you’ll meet your team of Alaskan huskies while your guide talks you through how to mush. You'll ride in a two-person sled, taking it in turns to 'drive' (shared excursion with non-MBA customers). After around 90 minutes of exploring you’ll be invited into a Sami lavvu (similar to a tipi) to warm up around the fire and enjoy your host's famous chocolate cake with a hot cup of coffee.

In the afternoon your host will drop you off in the centre of Tromsø, where you can take a taxi or shuttle bus back to the airport in time for your flight home.

What is the food like?

Breakfast in the hotel is a large buffet using a wide range of produce from the local area, with choices of cereal, fruit, cheese and meats, pastries, toast, hot cooked options, juices, tea and coffee.

During the activities, the food provided is home-cooked by a local chef and prepared that day. Expect fresh fish soups from the day's catch, a light picnic, warm drinks while kayaking and a warm meal on the northern lights trip. While meals are served on the northern lights sailing on Day 1 and land-based aurora hunt on Day 3, you may want a light dinner at the hotel beforehand as the meals are served rather late (dependent on the conditions for the night).

Lunch is not included on the whale safari on Day 2. Please budget 150 NOK (£13) for a packed lunch, or 500 NOK (£42) for a 2-course meal on board the boat. Dinner on Day 2 is not included, so you can venture out into Tromsø or enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Vegetarian, vegan and other dietary requirements can be catered for, please request this on your passenger information form after booking.

What is the accommodation like?

Clarion-The-Edge-Rooms-1-2, host

We were so lucky with the weather, the group was amazing, all the tour leaders were lovely and had loads of knowledge, and it was absolutely stunning seeing the northern lights. Highlights for me were the huskies- great way to end the trip with incredible views! Will be going on more tours for sure!

My one piece of advice for anyone doing this trip is…learn where the PUKKA travels office is! You’ll be going there daily to ask about the meet up time and place for every activity!

That being said, the activities were amazing once we were on them. We were so lucky with the lights, the whales, the huskies, the guides, the other people in the group…it was honestly all so good.

Tromsø and the surrounding areas are beautiful. I definitely have some wonderful memories from my visit and I’ll 100% be going back again! We need to spot those reindeer!!

What an absolutely incredible few days! We were so lucky with the weather and our fabulous group and guides. I can’t describe how wonderful the activities were … definitely exceeded my expectations and as soon as I thought I found a favourite, we did something else! The sky danced for us in all her incredible colours and Bruno in particular, made sure we didn’t miss out.

It did however, become clear quite quickly that MBA ‘sub contract’ this tour out to another travel company (PUKKA travel) which is absolutely fine… but some details got lost in translation. We did not have clear meeting details / times so had to chase for these and whilst everyone was more than helpful, it felt that we (as a MBA group) were not always expected. This in itself was not a huge issue, but none of the group realised we were not actually meeting MBA out there!

Overall, I would definitely recommend and plan to return to Tromsø to continue the adventure in the future…

Absolutely incredible trip! All of the crew were fabulous, they were all super knowledgeable and accomodating. The trip packs alot into a few days. So we left super satisfied that we didn't miss out on anything.

We were lucky enough to see northern lights on both the boat and bus trip. Both guides helped make sure we got some great photos.

We saw Orcas and sperm whales in the boat trip. It does take you a little while to get out to where they hangout ... But it's so worth it and there's some incredible scenery along the way.

Kayaking was an incredible experience ... Sadly no seals but we did see a sea eagle. Our guide was really chilled out and calming to make sure no one got flustered and to ensure we all enjoyed the experience.

It was such a high to finish with the husky sledding. We got to meet the huskies, had a great timing sledding and then had time to warm up/ ask questions.

Hotel was in a great location and served a fab breakfast every morning. Meeting points for tours were only a stones throw away from the hotel and super easy to find.

Communication throughout was great .... Couldn't ask for more!

The best way imaginable to spend four days ! Every day we thought the next activity couldn’t top the previous and every time it somehow managed it! We were super lucky with the weather so saw spectacular dancing northern lights on day one out on the catamaran. Tromsø is stunning- beautiful lights make it look magical even in polar darkness. The guides were all fantastic and our group were great. I want to do it all again.

Once in a lifetime but I'd do it again tomorrow!

This was a spectacular trip, something I've dreamt of for a long time and it was incredible. The guides were fantastic, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and kind, and the experiences lived up to high expectations. We saw stunning northern lights, sperm whales, otters, eagles and had the best time husky sledging. I know these things can't all be guaranteed, so we feel very lucky.
