Key Information

Day 1

Settle into your beautiful base in Quito

Pool and grounds at San Jose de Puembo Hotel, Quito

After touching down at the airport in Quito your host will meet you and transfer you to your first beautiful base at San José de Puembo, a former hacienda dating back to the 17th century, just outside the city and strategically situated for easy access to the airport for your onward trips to and from the Galapagos in the days ahead. The rest of the day you are free to enjoy the gardens, the beautiful pool and the spa facilities at the hotel and shake off any jet lag. There will be a group meet up at 19:00 where you can get to know your guides and fellow adventurers.

Day 2

Explore Quito and visit the equator

A city scape of Quito with the Virgen de El Panecillo statue and Cotopaxi standing proud in the background.

Kick things off by exploring Quito’s Old Town – all cobbled streets, colonial churches and vibrant plazas. Tuck into a hearty Andean lunch at a popular spot in the city - a favourite haunt of your host - before climbing to the city’s best perch: Panecillo Hill with some incredible swwping views over Ecuador's capital city. In the afternoon you'll head over to La Mitad del Mundo - the middle of the world on the equator line that gives Ecuador it's name. Stand with a foot in each of Earth's hemisphere's before heading back to your base for dinner and an early night - you're heading to the Galapagos first thing tomorrow...

Day 3

First glimpse of the Galapagos Islands

Isabela Island, Galapagos.

Hiking

1-1.5hrs · 1-2km

Hop on a plane bound for Baltra Island in the Galapagos - the flight is a spectacular one, crossing the open expanse of the Pacific Ocean for a couple of hours before the first islands come in to view. Touch down on Baltra and take a short ferry ride over to Santa Cruz Island, where you can get stuck straight into some of the island's highlights. Head to Los Gemelos (The Twins), two giant volcanic sinkholes for a short hike to take in the views, then on to El Chato Giant Tortoise Reserve where you can observe these magical creatures in their natural habitat. Drop into the Charles Darwin Research Station later in the day before finishing up at Puerto Ayora, the main town in Santa Cruz Island where your Wow Stay of this trip awaits. Blu Hotel Galapagos is a stunning waterfront lodge perched right on the edge of the ocean, a place where pelicans fly past your breakfast table and sunsets steal the show every evening. Settle in here for a delicious meal in the hotel's excellent restaurant to enjoy your first night in the Galapagos Islands.

Day 4

Cross to Isabela Island for bike rides and snorkelling

Snorkelling in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

Cycling

3hrs · 22km

Snorkelling

2hrs

This morning, catch a scenic public boat across the Pacific to Isabela Island, the largest and one of the wildest in the archipelago. Upon arrival, hop on a bike and pedal along a coastal trail toward Muro de las Lágrimas – the haunting 'Wall of Tears'. Built from volcanic rock by prisoners between 1946 and 1959, this 10-metre-high structure stands as a somber reminder of the island’s darker past. Along the way, pass by Poza de Flamingos, where you’ll spot vibrant flamingos and other wetland birds feeding in the shallows, and keep an eye out for giant tortoises ambling through the surrounding scrub. After cycling back to town, tuck into a well-earned lunch before heading out again – this time by boat – to explore Las Tintoreras, a tiny islet just offshore. This rocky outcrop is home to white-tipped reef sharks, Galápagos penguins, blue-footed boobies, and basking marine iguanas. Jump into the water for a snorkelling session in the calm, clear bay. Glide alongside sea turtles, shimmering tropical fish, and with luck, even manta rays, all thriving in this protected marine paradise. Later on, settle into your stunning beachfront base at Iguana Crossing – a boutique eco-lodge perched right on the sand, where marine iguanas laze on the path and waves roll in just beyond the deck; the perfect spot to unwind after your latest island adventures.

Day 5

Hike the twin volcanoes of Sierra Negra and Chico

Sierra Negra Volcano, Galapagos.

Hiking

6-7hrs · 16km · 400m up · 400m down

Lace up your boots and set off to explore one of Isabela Island’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders – Sierra Negra Volcano, home to the second-largest volcanic caldera on Earth. This is one of five volcanoes on the island and among the most active in the Galápagos, with its most recent eruption as recent as 2018. The trail winds gradually uphill through lush highland vegetation until you emerge at the vast rim of the caldera – a jaw-dropping vista stretching out over a surreal volcanic landscape. From here, continue on to the Chico Volcano, a geologically fascinating area dotted with fumaroles, lava tubes, and fields of twisted rock in striking reds and blacks. Along the way, your guide will share the story of how these dramatic formations trace the birth and evolution of the islands. Soak up your final night at your eco-lodge, relaxing to the sound of waves, spot penguins and pelicans from your balcony, and cool off in the infinity pool.

Day 6

Coffee, bike rides and wild sandy beaches

Beautiful Garrapatero beach in Galapagos. Santa Cruz island

Cycling

3-4hrs · 26km · 425m up · 425m down

Hop on an early speedboat back to Santa Cruz Island, and enjoy breakfast on arrival before heading inland to explore the lush highlands. Your first stop is a local organic coffee plantation, where you'll learn how beans are grown, harvested, and roasted in the Galápagos' unique volcanic soil. Sip a fresh cup right on the farm, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature – the perfect blend of flavour and tranquillity. After lunch, saddle up for a scenic bike ride through the highlands toward Garrapatero Beach. The route winds gently downhill, and it’s not uncommon to find giant tortoises ambling across your path – just one of those only-in-the-Galápagos moments. At the end of the trail, cool off with a dip in the calm waters of Garrapatero, a peaceful white-sand beach flanked by lava rocks and mangroves. Take time to explore the area’s rich ecosystem – if you’re lucky, you might even spot flamingos feeding in a hidden coastal lagoon nearby. Return to Puerto Ayora in the late afternoon to be reunited with your Wow Stay from earlier in the trip - you're here for two nights this time, so settle in now that you know your way around the place.

Day 7

Explore an uninhabited island and snorkel with sharks and sea turtles

Volcanic island rising out of the Pacific Ocean in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

Cycling

2-3hrs · 18km · 130m up · 130m down

Snorkelling

1hr

Rise early for a 06:15 pickup from your hotel in Puerto Ayora. After a scenic drive across Santa Cruz, you’ll reach Itabaca Channel, where you’ll hop aboard a speedboat bound for one of the nearby uninhabited islands – destination depending on permits and conditions for the day. The two-hour journey takes you past the Daphne Islands, a pair of dramatic volcanic cones rising from the sea, well-known for their birdlife and diving spots. Keep your eyes peeled for frigatebirds soaring overhead and dolphins playing in the boat’s wake. Upon arrival, disembark for a short guided walk through the island’s surreal volcanic terrain. Your guide will introduce you to the island’s unique ecosystem and geological history as you explore lava fields, cactus forests, and coastal cliffs. Back on the boat, enjoy a freshly prepared lunch on deck with views of the island’s colourful volcanic coastline – the perfect recharge before the next adventure. Afterward, dive into the clear turquoise waters for an epic snorkeling session. Glide through marine canyons alongside white-tipped reef sharks, sea turtles, and schools of vibrant fish, then follow the trail through lava cactus gardens for one last look at this remarkable place. Return by boat to Itabaca Channel and drive back to Puerto Ayora for one last dreamy evening at Blu Galapagos.

Day 8

Goodbye Galapagos

Sea Lion on a beach in the Galapagos Islands.

Wave goodbye to the islands as you board your flight back to mainland Ecuador, leaving the sea lions, marine iguanas and giant tortoises behind (though they’ll live on in your camera roll forever). Touch down in Quito and enjoy a relaxed afternoon, you're free to head into the city to explore more of the capital’s lively markets and hidden corners or grab a final taste of Andean street food, or just unwind in the hotel gardens with a coffee or a cold cerveza in hand. As the sun sets on your adventure, gather with your group for one last evening together swapping stories from sea and shore, and plenty of tortoise photos passed around the table.

What is the food like?

Ecuadorian cuisine: Pescado encocado or fish with coconut sauce close-up on a plate. Horizontal

In Quito, you’ll sample Ecuador's rich culinary traditions as you explore the historic Old Town, with everything from sizzling street-side empanadas to elegant plates of hornado (slow-roasted pork). While many traditional dishes lean towards meat, there’s no shortage of variety – think seafood ceviche with a citrusy Andean twist, or vegetarian-friendly staples like potato-filled llapingachos, grilled plantains, and fresh local cheeses.

Out in the Galapagos, the food switches to coastal origins, with the freshest seafood served up daily. Your host will take you to restaurants that prioritise sustainability, ensuring your meals are both delicious and responsibly sourced. Ceviche is the undisputed star here – often made with local whitefish or shrimp and marinated in lime, onion, and coriander. At Blu Galapagos on Santa Cruz Island, you’ll dine at Almar, a refined oceanfront restaurant with an amazing view while you tuck into the delicious choices on offer here. Expect elegant dishes with Ecuadorian flair and a good selection of vegan options too. Breakfasts include Western-style classics alongside local treats. At Iguana Crossing Hotel you'll enjoy gourmet breakfasts of fresh fruit, artisanal breads, and traditional bolones – savoury green plantain dumplings that pack a punch. Evening meals here often feature a fusion of highland ingredients like grains and root vegetables with the flavours of the coast.

Vegans, vegetarians, gluten-free, and any food allergies can be catered for. Please let your host know of your requirements in advance.

What is the accommodation like?

San Jose de Puembo hotel, Quito, Ecuador.
Quito

Before and after your time in the Galapagos you'll stay at San Jose de Puembo, a charming hacienda style hotel set amongst lush gardens, the perfect spot to recharge before and after your Galápagos adventure. Think cobbled courtyards, wide verandas, and a peaceful countryside vibe, all within easy reach of the city. Rooms are cosy and traditional, with wooden beams, warm textiles, and modern comforts like hot showers and Wi-Fi. After a long flight or a week of island hopping, you can stretch out in the garden, take a dip in the pool, or relax by the fireplace in the lounge. The on-site restaurant serves hearty Ecuadorian fare with ingredients from the property’s own gardens. You'll stay in superior twin share rooms, each with an ensuite bathroom.

Blu Hotel, Galapagos.
Santa Cruz Island

Tucked away in the heart of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, Blu Hotel Galapagos is a modern, eco-conscious hideaway just moments from the waterfront. After a day of snorkeling with sea lions or hiking lava trails, you’ll return to cool off in the courtyard pool or sip something cold on the rooftop terrace. The rooms are light and airy with locally inspired decor and air conditioning – a welcome touch in the island heat. Some have balconies overlooking the town or sea, and all come with private bathrooms. You’re within easy walking distance of the harbour, shops, and restaurants, but the vibe back at the hotel is calm and laid-back – the perfect blend for a Galapagos escape. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with an ensuite bathroom.

Iguana Crossing Hotel, Galapagos.
Isabela Island

Perched right on the edge of Isabela’s wild beachfront, Iguana Crossing blends boutique comfort with front-row seats to the island’s untamed beauty. Named after the marine iguanas that regularly stroll across the sand out front, this eco-hotel puts you closer to nature – without skimping on style. Rooms are bright and contemporary, with huge windows framing views of the Pacific or the Sierra Negra volcano. Expect soft beds, spacious bathrooms, and the soothing soundtrack of the ocean just outside. After memorable days exploring the island with your host, you can unwind in the infinity pool or sip a sundowner on the deck. The hotel’s commitment to sustainability shows in its architecture and solar-powered systems, making it a smart and scenic base for your Isabela adventures.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).

This trip has been rated as Easy

Anyone with a basic level of fitness can enjoy this trip. All you'll need is to be able to handle a few hours of activity every day, mixed between snorkelling, kayaking, hiking and biking. The activities aren't strenuous, the aim on this trip is to breathe in and soak up the natural wonders of the Galapagos Islands while immersed in your surroundings.

What if i need to skip an activity?

You are welcome to skip any of the activities on this trip if you are not feeling up to something on any given day or moment of the adventure. The bases are incredible on this Plus Edition, so they are fantastic spots to relax in if you do happen to sit anything out.

What will I need to carry?

Your larger bag suitable for all your belongings can remain in your hotel bases throughout the trip, transported between each base for you. You'll just need a small rucksack to carry personal items during each day of activity.

Seasons in the Galapagos are split into the cool and dry season (June to November) and the warm and wet season (December to May). The seas are warmer, calmer and have better visibility in the warm and wet season. Rain showers in the wet season tend to be over quickly, and are often a pleasant break from the heat and sun.

Average temperatures in the warm and wet season from December to May range from a low of 22°C (70°F) to a high of 31°C (84°F).

Average temperatures in the cool and dry season from June to November range from a low of 19°C (68°F) to a high of 27°C (82°F).

The wildlife in the Galapagos can be seen year-round, as many of the big draws are resident to the islands, with few migratory species.

Entry to the Galapagos is operated like this by the Ecuadorian government. Please make sure you bring along the following:

  • $10 USD in cash for a municipal tax to enter Isabela Island on Day 5. This is payable when presenting your passport upon arrival on the island.

Tips

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however, we suggest the below as a guideline per person:

Guides:

  • $5 USD per day in the mainland

Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality - a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Personal Expenses

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures and you are required to provide your policy information before departing. Your insurance should include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment and the specific activities involved on your adventure. We also strongly recommend it includes cancellation and curtailment insurance, should you be unable to join your trip for specific reasons such as illness. Our recommended travel insurance provider is Campbell Irvine, as their insurance offers all of the above.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 554kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

All of our trips to Ecuador are currently running without any disruption. More information can be read here.

High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influences the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep cool as best possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.
