Key Information
Day 1
Settle into your beautiful base in Quito

After touching down at the airport in Quito, your host will meet you and transfer you to your first beautiful base: San José de Puembo, a former hacienda dating back to the 17th century. It’s just outside the city and ideally located for easy access to the airport for your onward journeys to and from the Galapagos in the days ahead. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the gardens, the lovely pool and the hotel’s spa facilities, and to shake off any jet lag. There’ll be a group meet up at 19:00 where you can get to know your guides and fellow adventurers.
Day 2
Explore Quito and visit the equator

Kick things off by exploring Quito’s Old Town, all cobbled streets, colonial churches and vibrant plazas. Tuck into a hearty Andean lunch at a popular spot in the city, a favourite haunt of your host, before climbing to the city’s best perch: Panecillo Hill, with some incredible sweeping views over Ecuador's capital. In the afternoon, you’ll head over to La Mitad del Mundo - the middle of the world, sitting right on the equator line that gives Ecuador its name. Stand with a foot in each of Earth’s hemispheres before heading back to your base for dinner and an early night, you’re off to the Galapagos first thing tomorrow…
Day 3
First glimpse of the Galapagos Islands

Hiking
Board a flight to Baltra Island in the Galápagos - it’s a breathtaking journey, soaring over the vast Pacific for a couple of hours before the islands begin to appear on the horizon. After touching down, hop on a short ferry across to Santa Cruz Island and kick off your Galapagos adventure. First stop: Los Gemelos (The Twins), a pair of dramatic volcanic sinkholes nestled in the highlands. Stretch your legs on a short hike through the surrounding forest, then continue on to El Chato Giant Tortoise Reserve to see these iconic creatures roaming freely in their natural habitat. Drop into the Charles Darwin Research Station later in the day before finishing up in Puerto Ayora, the main town on Santa Cruz Island, where your spectacular waterfront hideaway awaits. Blu Hotel Galapagos is a stunning waterfront lodge perched right on the edge of the ocean – a place where pelicans fly past your breakfast table and sunsets steal the show every evening. Settle in for a delicious meal in the hotel’s excellent restaurant and enjoy your first night in the Galapagos Islands.
Day 4
Cross to Isabela Island for bike rides and snorkelling

Cycling
Snorkelling
This morning, catch a scenic public boat across the Pacific to Isabela Island, the largest and one of the wildest in the archipelago. Upon arrival, hop on a bike and pedal along a coastal trail towards the Muro de las Lágrimas, the haunting 'Wall of Tears'. Built from volcanic rock by prisoners between 1946 and 1959, this 10m high structure stands as a sombre reminder of the island’s darker past. Along the way, pass by Poza de Flamingos, where you’ll spot vibrant flamingos and other wetland birds feeding in the shallows, and keep an eye out for giant tortoises ambling through the surrounding scrub. After cycling back to town, tuck into a well-earned lunch before heading out again, this time by boat, to explore Las Tintoreras, a tiny islet just offshore. This rocky outcrop is home to white-tipped reef sharks, Galapagos penguins, blue-footed boobies, and basking marine iguanas. Jump into the water for a snorkelling session in the calm, clear bay. Glide alongside sea turtles, shimmering tropical fish, and with any luck even manta rays, all thriving in this protected marine paradise. Later on, settle into your stunning beachfront base at Iguana Crossing, a boutique eco-lodge perched right on the sand, where marine iguanas laze on the path and waves roll in just beyond the deck; the perfect spot to unwind after your latest island adventures.
Day 5
Hike the twin volcanoes of Sierra Negra and Chico

Hiking
Lace up your boots and set off to explore one of Isabela Island’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, Sierra Negra Volcano, home to the second-largest volcanic caldera on Earth. This is one of five volcanoes on the island and among the most active in the Galapagos, with its most recent eruption occurring in 2018. The trail winds gradually uphill through lush highland vegetation until you emerge at the vast rim of the caldera, a jaw-dropping vista stretching out over a surreal volcanic landscape. From here, continue on to the Chico Volcano, a geologically fascinating area dotted with fumaroles, lava tubes, and fields of twisted rock in striking reds and blacks. Along the way, your guide will share the story of how these dramatic formations trace the birth and evolution of the islands. Soak up your final night at your eco-lodge, relax to the sound of the waves, spot penguins and pelicans from your balcony, and cool off in the infinity pool.
Day 6
Coffee, bike rides and wild sandy beaches

Cycling
Hop on an early speedboat back to Santa Cruz Island and enjoy breakfast on arrival before heading inland to explore the lush highlands. Your first stop is a local organic coffee plantation, where you'll learn how beans are grown, harvested, and roasted in the Galapagos’ unique volcanic soil. Sip a fresh cup right on the farm, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, the perfect blend of flavour and tranquillity. After lunch, saddle up for a scenic bike ride through the highlands towards Garrapatero Beach. The route winds gently downhill, and it’s not uncommon to find giant tortoises ambling across your path - just one of those only-in-the-Galapagos moments. At the end of the trail, cool off with a dip in the calm waters of Garrapatero, a peaceful white-sand beach flanked by lava rocks and mangroves. Take time to explore the area’s rich ecosystem; if you’re lucky, you might even spot flamingos feeding in a hidden coastal lagoon nearby. Return to Puerto Ayora in the late afternoon to be reunited with your epic accommodation from earlier in the trip; you’re here for two nights this time, so settle in now that you know your way around the place.
Day 7
Explore an uninhabited island and snorkel with sharks and sea turtles

Cycling
Snorkelling
Rise early for a 06:15 pick-up from your hotel in Puerto Ayora. After a scenic drive across Santa Cruz, you’ll reach the Itabaca Channel, where you’ll hop aboard a speedboat bound for one of the nearby uninhabited islands. The destination depends on permits and conditions for the day. The two-hour journey takes you past the Daphne Islands, a pair of dramatic volcanic cones rising from the sea, well known for their birdlife and diving spots. Keep your eyes peeled for frigatebirds soaring overhead and dolphins playing in the boat’s wake. Upon arrival, disembark for a short guided walk through the island’s surreal volcanic terrain. Your guide will introduce you to the island’s unique ecosystem and geological history as you explore lava fields, cactus forests, and coastal cliffs. Back on the boat, enjoy a freshly prepared lunch on deck with views of the island’s colourful volcanic coastline - the perfect recharge before the next adventure. Afterwards, dive into the clear turquoise waters for an epic snorkelling session. Glide through marine canyons alongside white-tipped reef sharks, sea turtles, and schools of vibrant fish, then follow the trail through lava cactus gardens for one last look at this remarkable place. Return by boat to the Itabaca Channel and drive back to Puerto Ayora for one last dreamy evening at Blu Galapagos.
Day 8
Goodbye Galapagos

Wave goodbye to the islands as you board your flight back to mainland Ecuador, leaving the sea lions, marine iguanas and giant tortoises behind (though they’ll live on in your camera roll forever). Touch down in Quito and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. You're free to head into the city to explore more of the capital’s lively markets and hidden corners, grab a final taste of Andean street food, or simply unwind in the hotel gardens with a coffee or a cold cerveza in hand. As the sun sets on your adventure, gather with your group for one last evening together, swapping stories from sea and shore, and passing around plenty of tortoise photos at the table.

What is the food like?

In Quito, you’ll sample Ecuador's rich culinary traditions as you explore the historic Old Town, with everything from sizzling street-side empanadas to elegant plates of hornado (slow-roasted pork). While many traditional dishes lean towards meat, there’s no shortage of variety – think seafood ceviche with a citrusy Andean twist, or vegetarian-friendly staples like potato-filled llapingachos, grilled plantains, and fresh local cheeses.
Out in the Galapagos, the food switches to coastal origins, with the freshest seafood served up daily. Your host will take you to restaurants that prioritise sustainability, ensuring your meals are both delicious and responsibly sourced. Ceviche is the undisputed star here, often made with local whitefish or shrimp, and marinated in lime, onion, and coriander. At Blu Galapagos on Santa Cruz Island, you’ll dine at Almar, a refined oceanfront restaurant with an amazing view while you tuck into the delicious choices on offer here. Expect elegant dishes with Ecuadorian flair and a good selection of vegan options too. Breakfasts include Western-style classics alongside local treats. At Iguana Crossing Hotel, you'll enjoy gourmet breakfasts of fresh fruit, artisanal breads, and traditional bolones – savoury green plantain dumplings that pack a punch. Evening meals here often feature a fusion of highland ingredients like grains and root vegetables with the flavours of the coast.
Vegans, vegetarians, gluten-free, and any food allergies can be catered for. Please let your host know of your requirements in advance.
What is the accommodation like?

Quito
Before and after your time in the Galapagos, you'll stay at San Jose de Puembo, a charming hacienda-style hotel set amongst lush gardens, the perfect spot to recharge before and after your Galapagos adventure. Think cobbled courtyards, wide verandas, and a peaceful countryside vibe, all within easy reach of the city. Rooms are cosy and traditional, featuring wooden beams, warm textiles, and modern comforts such as hot showers and WiFi. After a long flight or a week of island hopping, you can stretch out in the garden, take a dip in the pool, or relax by the fireplace in the lounge. The on-site restaurant serves hearty Ecuadorian fare with ingredients from the property’s gardens. You'll stay in superior twin-share rooms, each with an ensuite bathroom.

Santa Cruz Island
Tucked away in the heart of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, Blu Hotel Galapagos is a modern, sustainability-conscious hideaway just moments from the waterfront. After a day of snorkelling with sea lions or hiking lava trails, you’ll return to cool off in the courtyard pool or sip something cold on the rooftop terrace. The rooms are light and airy with locally inspired decor and air conditioning – a welcome touch in the island heat. Some have balconies overlooking the town or sea, and all come with private bathrooms. You’re within easy walking distance of the harbour, shops, and restaurants, but the vibe back at the hotel is calm and laid-back – the perfect blend for a Galapagos escape. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with an ensuite bathroom.

Isabela Island
Perched right on the edge of Isabela’s wild beachfront, Iguana Crossing blends boutique comfort with a front-row location on the island’s untamed coastline. Named after the marine iguanas that regularly stroll across the sand out front, this eco-hotel puts you closer to nature without skimping on style. Rooms are bright and contemporary, with huge windows framing views of the Pacific or the Sierra Negra volcano. Expect soft beds, spacious bathrooms, and the soothing soundtrack of the ocean just outside. After memorable days exploring the island with your host, you can unwind in the infinity pool or sip a sundowner on the deck. The hotel’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its architecture and solar-powered systems, making it a smart and scenic base for your Isabela adventures.
Upgrades
For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).
This trip has been rated as Easy
Anyone with a basic level of fitness can enjoy this trip. All you’ll need is the ability to manage a few hours of activity each day, including a mix of snorkelling, hiking and biking. The activities aren’t strenuous — the aim of this trip is to breathe in and soak up the natural wonders of the Galapagos Islands while fully immersed in your surroundings.
What if i need to skip an activity?
You’re welcome to skip any of the activities on this trip if you’re not feeling up to it on a particular day or at any point during the adventure. The bases are incredible and make fantastic spots to relax in if you do decide to sit anything out.
What will I need to carry?
Your larger bag, suitable for all your belongings, can remain at the hotel bases throughout the trip and will be transported between each one for you. You’ll just need a small rucksack to carry personal items during each day of activity.
Seasons in the Galapagos are split into the cool, dry season (June to November) and the warm, wet season (December to May). The seas are warmer, calmer, and offer better visibility during the warm, wet season. Rain showers at this time of year tend to pass quickly and are often a welcome break from the heat and sun.
Average temperatures in the warm, wet season (December to May) range from a low of 22°C (70°F) to a high of 31°C (84°F).
Average temperatures in the cool, dry season (June to November) range from a low of 19°C (68°F) to a high of 27°C (82°F).
Wildlife in the Galapagos can be seen year-round, as many of the main attractions are resident species, with few migratory ones.
We’re still waiting to collect any reviews from other travellers on this trip. However, all our hosts go through an extensive vetting process to ensure that your adventure is awesome.

Additional costs
There are some payments that you'll need to make locally on this trip. Much Better Adventures usually include everything to make for a hassle free trip, however sometimes there are payments that must be made in person at borders or national parks which require cash payment along with your passport. Entry to the Galapagos is operated like this by the Ecuadorian government. Please make sure you bring along the following:
-
$200 USD in cash for the Galapagos National Park entry fee. This fee is paid by each adult visiting the Galapagos, and this payment goes towards protecting the wider national park and marine reserve. You must pay this fee on arrival at Baltra Airport while presenting your passport for immigration control. It can only be paid individually by the passport holder.
-
$10 USD in cash for a municipal tax to enter Isabela Island on Day 5. This is payable when presenting your passport upon arrival on the island.
Tips
Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however, we suggest the below as a guideline per person:
Guides:
- $5 USD per day in the mainland

Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality - a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
Personal Expenses
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures and you are required to provide your policy information before departing. Your insurance should include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment and the specific activities involved on your adventure. We also strongly recommend it includes cancellation and curtailment insurance, should you be unable to join your trip for specific reasons such as illness. Our recommended travel insurance provider is Campbell Irvine, as their insurance offers all of the above.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 554kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
All of our trips to Ecuador are currently running without any disruption. More information can be read here.
Yes, there are some payments you’ll need to make locally on this trip. Much Better Adventures usually includes everything to make for a hassle-free experience; however, some payments must be made in person at borders or national parks, which require cash payment along with your passport. Entry to the Galapagos is operated this way by the Ecuadorian government. Please make sure you bring the following:
-
$100 USD in cash for the Galapagos National Park entry fee (Note: from 1 August 2024 onwards, this entrance fee will increase to $200 USD per person). This fee is paid by each adult visiting the Galapagos, and the payment goes towards protecting the wider national park and marine reserve. You must pay this fee on arrival at Baltra Airport while presenting your passport for immigration control. It can only be paid individually by the passport holder.

The tap water in mainland Ecuador and the Galapagos is not always gentle on the stomach, especially for those who haven’t been in Latin America for a while. Purified water is available in each of the hotels for you to refill your bottle each morning, so be sure to pack one or two reusable water bottles.
Yes, you are able to leave excess luggage in Quito at the start of the trip, to be collected when you return to Quito after your week in the Galapagos.
This trip takes place in environments where wild animals are present in their natural environment, where protections and controls on their movement may be limited or non-existent. Some species may be dangerous, venomous, or unpredictable. Sightings are a privilege, but safety is key. Always follow your guide’s instructions and any posted signage.
We recommend considering your comfort around wildlife and discussing any concerns with your host before travel, particularly if you have allergies, phobias, or related health conditions.
This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.
Before travelling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns, especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.
This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.
Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.
Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.
Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).
For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
