Newquay (pop. 20,000) is a seaside resort and fishing town in Cornwall. It’s widely regarded at the surfing capital of the UK. With several beautiful sand beaches—each with its own unique surfing conditions—you’ll always have a place to catch waves.

Fistral Beach is a long, wide, sandy beach backed by coastal dunes. There’s tons of space for beginners to learn how to surf at one end while experienced surfers catch big waves at the other end.

Towan Beach is a sheltered beach right in the heart of town with perfect beginner waves and easy access to restaurants and beach bars for lunch.

Start point?
You’ll meet at your host’s surf shop at 09:00 on Saturday morning. If you don’t feel like getting up early to make your way to in Newquay in time, your local host has plenty of recommendations on where to stay the night before. Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

Finish point?
You’ll finish at your host’s surf shop around midday on Sunday. Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

Getting there and away?
Newquay is a 1hour flight, 5 – 6 hour drive, or a 5+ hour train ride from Paddington Station in London. Because of the early start on Saturday we recommend you arrive Friday and enjoy a night in Newquay.

We will contact you before you leave to check your arrival and departure plans.

For extra financial protection against unforeseen circumstances such as erupting Icelandic volcanoes, we recommend you book your flights using a credit card.

Please note, if there are not 4 people booked the trip may be rearranged or cancelled.

Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our Epic Weekends are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of solo travelers and very small groups, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

You’ll learn the basics of surfing in two comprehensive lessons. Start with safety, then learn to paddle, catch waves and steer the board. When you’re ready, your instructor will teach you to pop up and ride a wave back to shore.

While it can’t be guaranteed, your instructors are highly confident that you’ll be standing up and surfing by the end of your lessons.

Coasteering is the sport of navigating the features of a coastline by any means necessary. You’ll make your way around Towan Head with a combination of wild swimming, low-level traverses, sluices, whirlpools, and both low-level and deep water cliff jumps.

While you’re encouraged to push your comfort zone, you’ll never be forced to do something you’re not comfortable with.

More than just a place to sleep for the night, the fully-hosted surfcamp is a place to immerse yourself in the peace of an untouched forest, learn bushcraft skills or just have a good chat around the campfire.

Learn to start a fire with friction, hone your campfire BBQ skills, challenge your friends to an axe throwing contest, and practice your balance on the slack line. You’re welcome to do as much or as little at you want. Relaxing in your bell tent with a good book is always an option.

A basic level of fitness is needed to enjoy a couple hours at a time of surfing and coasteering. You need to be able to swim 25m. No previous surfing, coasteering or camping experience is needed.

Food is not included. Newquay has a range of restaurants for any budget, as well as a supermarket across the street from the surf shop. You’ll need to buy ingredients for dinner and breakfast at the camp.

Given the diversity of food available in town, all diets can be accommodated.

Summers in Newquay are cool and sunny. From May to October temperatures range from 16 – 21 °C during the day, and cool off to 10 – 14 °C at night. Days are usually sunny and clear.

Full-length winter wetsuits are provided even in the summer to ensure you stay nice and warm while in the water.

All equipment is included except for a sleeping bag:

  • Surfing: Surf board and full-length wetsuit
  • Coasteering: Full-length wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid
  • Camping: Tent, sheets, sleeping mat, pillow

Your host recommends you bring:

  • Swimsuit or board shorts to wear under a wetsuit
  • Towel
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunblock)
  • Lace-up trainers that you don’t mind getting wet
  • Dry, close-toed shoes for camp
  • Flipflops for the beach
  • Jumper or other warm layer
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Warm hat
  • Socks
  • Torch
  • Sleeping bag
  • Water bottle
  • Food and drinks
  • Waterproof camera (optional)

If you feel that you will struggle to see without your glasses then yes please do wear them. We suggest securing them to yourself with a piece of string so as not to lose them. Daily throw away contact lenses are the best option for surfing. Contact lenses are fine to keep in whilst coasteering we don’t tend to have too many issues with this.
