Although the epitome of seclusion now, this area has also been home to fishermen, miners and farmers for centuries; a time that has left its mark still to this day.

Wildlife encounters are plentiful with countless sanctuaries for seabirds; Saint Anna also boasts the largest population of sea eagles in Sweden. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the odd seal.

What to Expect

Wednesday: Launch Day

Your host will meet you in Norrköping at 10:00 in the morning before taking you to the kayaking launch point, and hour’s drive away.

You’ll be welcomed by the team and given a quick safety briefing ahead of the trip.

Paddles at the ready, you’ll be on the water around noon paddling north-east towards a cluster of pretty islands just south of Aspoja. There are several bird sanctuaries on this route so keep a look out for some spectacular sea eagles.

As dusk draws in, your guide will find the perfect spot to set up camp. Get to know the group as you cook dinner as a team and reflect on your first day in this magnificent place.

Thursday: Missjö Archipelago

When the sea eagles call, you’ll rise for breakfast before continuing your paddle south-east through the outer archipelago.

Today is a gorgeous paddle through a maze of little barren islands. With the open sea ahead of you, you might just be lucky enough to spot the odd seal.

After a strenuous day, you’ll reach the famous navigation mark, Kupa Klint; from here you’ll have spectacular views of the most finely chiselled archipelago in Sweden – the Missjö Archipelago.

Inside the outer band of skerries lies the larger Missjö island, a superb spot to camp for the night. Your guide knows all the nooks and crannies to get you set up in the best, sheltered spot.

Enjoy dinner with the group and a few games around the campfire before you retire to your tent and drift to sleep to the sound of the crashing water.

12km kayaking

Friday: Harstena Village and Yttero island

This morning you’ll continue to explore south towards the idyllic Harstena Village. You’ll stop to appreciate the picturesque and historic beauty of this place and enjoy lunch at a waterside restaurant.

After lunch, you’ll meander around the village visiting the old school and even the local bakery for some ridiculously tasty cinnamon swirls.

Back on the water, you’ll continue to paddle south-east to the magical Yttero island, defined by its smooth rocky beaches and old gnarly pine trees. You’ll find higher ground for an amazing view of the archipelago, and wander the forest path where you’ll discover an enchanting little lake; you’ve just found the most magical place to camp for the night.

12km kayaking

Saturday: The Great Wall of Vaggon

This morning, you will make your way west towards the larger sheltered islands close to the mainland; see if you can spot the hidden sandy beach, a rarity in these parts.

Along calm waters, you’ll take a narrow passage north of Krakmaro, past clusters of traditional summer houses - a very different landscape than the one you left behind.

Overall, Saint Anna Archipelago is pretty flat, but as you approach the passage at Vaggon, far more dramatic scenery awaits; its steep rocky walls crash into the water with distinct contrast.

Tonight, you will camp on one of the smaller islands south of Vaggon. A local fisherman will bring you his catch of the day for a delicious dinner to celebrate on this, your last night.

10km kayaking

Sunday: Back to the Mainland

Today is the final day you will wake to the call of the seabirds. You’ll paddle south-east to the navigation mark at Gubbon and the abandoned copper mine on Fango.

Continuing through the gorgeous islands south of Fango, you’ll zig-zag through back towards the mainland and Fyrudden, where your trip will come to an end and your story-telling will begin.

10-12km kayaking
