What is the food like?

Traditional Nepalese meal of dhal bhat.

Breakfast is usually hot porridge, muesli or Tibetan bread served with an omelette or boiled eggs.

The dinner menus in the teahouses are very similar at every stop and there will usually be a choice of traditional Nepalese dhal bhat (a mixed plate of lentils, rice, vegetables and pickles – delicious and healthy), momos (Nepalese dumplings), mixed noodles, pasta and even pizza. Although meat is available at some teahouses, we suggest that you ask your guide for their advice regarding its consumption, as it tends to depend on how far it has travelled as to whether or not it is a safe option.

If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’ for specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may get at home varies in different destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before making your booking to ensure that this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.

What is the accommodation like?

Room in the Skye Inn Hotel
Kathmandu

You’ll stay at Skye Inn Kathmandu, ideally located close to the main shopping area and heritage sites. Accommodation is in a twin-share ensuite room, with air conditioning and Wi-Fi included.

Traditional Himalayan teahouse in the lush green valleys of the Annapurna range, Nepal
On the trail

You’ll be staying in traditional teahouses for nine nights during your trek. These are simple mountain lodges offering basic but welcoming accommodation along the trekking routes. The higher you go, the more rustic the facilities become, and the pricier the snacks.

Rooms are typically twin-share, or occasionally triple-share, on Days 3–6 and Day 11. Further expansion of teahouses within the Annapurna Conservation Zone is strictly limited, so room availability is scarce. As a result, rooms are usually triple or quad share for at least four nights on Days 7–10. Rooms have simple beds, a mattress and pillow, but no heating — so a warm sleeping bag is essential. Earplugs are handy too, as sound tends to travel.

Bathrooms are shared, with one or two basic toilets, sometimes outside, ranging from squat-style to seated. Toilet paper is not provided, so bring your own. Most teahouses sell essentials such as toilet paper, tissues, soap, shampoo and snacks.

Some lodges offer hot showers for a small fee; these might be solar or gas-powered or simply a bucket of hot water. All teahouses have electricity, usually solar-powered, though it can be patchy. Lighting may be too dim to read by, so bring a torch. Charging is typically available in the dining area for a small fee per device. Many lodges offer Wi-Fi, but it’s not always reliable.

Communal dining rooms are the cosy heart of the teahouse, a spot to gather, play cards or warm up with a hot drink. They’re typically colourful spaces, often decorated with traditional rugs and warmed by a central stove. Above 3,000m, some lodges may not use stoves due to environmental rules.

Pokhara Lake with the Annapurnas in the background, Nepal.
Pokhara

You'll stay in a hotel near the lake on a twin-share basis, close to local bars and restaurants.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked – see Optional Extras. This only applies to the nights spent in hotels, and is subject to availability. Please request this at the time of booking.

Amazing trekking experience!

We had an amazing trekking experience in Nepal and would highly recommend this organisation. Everything was very well organised from start to finish. Transport was arranged perfectly, all appointments were clear, and communication was always easy and quick.

Our guide and assistant guides were truly wonderful. They were caring, reliable, and always kept their promises. On top of that, they were great company on the trail, full of humour and always creating a relaxed and positive atmosphere.

We would also like to give a special mention to the porters. They were incredible hardworking, always positive, and truly great company both on the trail and in the teahouses. Their effort and dedication made a big difference to our experience.

The trek itself was absolutely beautiful. We were lucky to have great weather, which made the views even more spectacular. The intensity of the trek felt just right: challenging but very enjoyable. The teahouses along the route were well chosen and well taken care of, which made the whole experience comfortable and stress-free.

This was an unforgettable adventure and we would definitely choose this team again!

Just do it- you won’t regret it!

This was our first experience of a multi day trek and what an amazing experience from start to finish. Whilst the scenery was epic (pictures do not do it justice), it was everything else about this trip with Much Better Adventures (operated by Freedom Adventures) that made it truly special. Geeta/ Himal were super responsive and extremely proactive to make sure all our pre-trek questions were answered and any alternative arrangements to hotels/transfers were made. Krishna, our lead guide, supported by Kunga and Amit (assistant guides) were extremely experienced and did everything they could to make our trek as comfortable as possible. We felt extremely safe in their hands throughout the uncertainty of the Himalayan weather. The trek would also not have been possible without the support staff: Season, Raju, Saroj, Bikash, Arjun, Shree. Many have ambitions to become assistant and lead guides in the future. We looked at many operators for our first trip to the Himalayas and nothing we saw came close to the group dynamic we had with MBA. An amazing group of like-minded travellers from all areas that we no doubt will see either on another MBA trip or outside of travel. If you are thinking about this trip, just do it, you won’t regret it!

An incredible two weeks in Annapurna

A truly incredible journey through an incredible part of the world. The Annapurna Sanctuary route did not disappoint. We had such a wonderful group who made the trip awesome. Not only an amazing place with a great group but led by an amazing team - I can't speak highly enough of Krishna, Kunga, Amit and the Porter team who looked after us and were so kind every step of the way. Exceeded all expectations - an absolutely breathtaking trip.

An amazing experience from start to finish!

The most beautiful views that were matched by the incredible energy of our group So grateful to be guided by people who clearly know and love the land we were walking across The organisation was great, putting in so much effort to make the trek an amazing experience A massive thank you to Krishna, Kunga, and Amit! we couldn't have asked for better guides or better company.

Absolutely loved the trip.

An incredible route — the Poon Hill sunrise hike and the stretch from MBC to ABC were particular highlights.

The views were stunning throughout.

The guiding was excellent. Tej (lead guide) was outstanding, and Ujjwal, Anjana, and Dilli were equally attentive and brilliant. Between them, they took care of everything, leaving us free to just enjoy the experience.

Thoroughly well organised and a lot of fun.

Pamela M.(April 2026)
Stunning views and an amazing Annapurna experience.

Thank you for an amazing trip! I have loved every minute of my time in Nepal. Krishna, Santos, Asman and the porters looked after us so well on the trek. Nothing was too much trouble. The trek was well organised and paced to give us all the best chance of getting to Annapurna base camp in good health. I never felt rushed and enjoyed soaking up the amazing colours and beauty of the jungle, Rhododendrons, terraced farm land and snow covered mountains. Each day was filled with stunning views! The tea houses were a welcome sight each afternoon and I enjoyed the food. Santos couldn't have been more attentive getting us our fix of Masala tea or LGH.

As a solo traveller I felt secure and well looked after. I enjoyed the company of everyone in the group. We really did feel like a family on an amazing adventure together.

Thank you to Freedom Adventure for all their support with pick ups, travel connections and organising additional trips in Nepal. I added on four days to visit Chitwan nature reserve. The perfect way to rest up after the Annapurna Sanctuary Route trek and see amazing animals and Nepal nature.

Thank you for making a trip of a life time perfect.

Breathtaking Views, Brilliant People, Unforgettable Memories

We had an absolutely superb 13-day adventure to Annapurna Base Camp, expertly organised by Much Better Adventures. Every detail of the trip was thoughtfully planned, making the entire experience seamless and truly unforgettable.

Our expedition was led by Krishna, whose leadership and knowledge were exceptional. He was supported by fantastic guides, Santos and Asman, along with an incredible team of porters, without whom this journey simply wouldn’t have been possible. Their dedication, warmth, and professionalism made all the difference.

The trek itself was nothing short of breathtaking. Each day offered something unique, from the lush lower valleys with their dramatic river gorges and charming villages, to the higher elevations filled with stunning rhododendron forests (we were lucky enough to see them in full bloom). Reaching Poon Hill was a definite highlight; the sunrise there was utterly spectacular and a moment we’ll never forget.

As we ascended above the tree line toward base camp, the scenery became even more dramatic and awe-inspiring. A fresh snowfall transformed the landscape into a magical winter wonderland, making our descent just as memorable as the climb.

What made the experience even more special, beyond the scenery and the outstanding team, was the group of people that Much Better Adventures brought together. We met some truly wonderful individuals, from fellow trekkers to the guides and porters, all of whom enriched the journey in their own way.

A heartfelt thank you to the entire team for an incredible experience we’ll cherish forever.

An unforgettable experience in the Himalayas

We had an incredible 9-day trek on the Annapurna Sanctuary route, made all the more special by great company and unforgettable landscapes. Each day brought something new - from vibrant rhododendron forests to dramatic, snow-capped peaks.

Every detail of the trek was meticulously planned, thanks to our outstanding lead guide Krishna and his assistant guides, Santos and Asman. Together, they were consummate professionals: attentive, knowledgeable, and constantly checking in on our wellbeing. We always felt completely safe in their care, and Krishna’s cheeky sense of humour kept spirits high, especially on the longer trekking days.

The hike was manageable for both of us, though the altitude at base camp adds an extra - and rewarding - challenge.

All in all, this was a wonderful experience we’ll never forget!

Caitlin W.(April 2026)
Amazing

The trip was really well organised and everything was taken care off from the moment you land. The guides went above and beyond to ensure everyone was happy from helping sort out the cash, hiring and ordering food and drinks. Even a minimum daily check in for altitude sickness. Everyday we were clear on what we needed and what the goal was whilst we trekked through beautiful jungle up to base camp. I really recommend this trip although do not underestimate the amount of steps (every up and down). Some training will go a long way to ensuring you enjoy this trip. But fear not the guides will ensure everyone is walking at the current pace for altitude.

Amazing Annapurna

I recently returned from an incredible trekking holiday, and I can honestly say the experience exceeded all expectations, largely thanks to the outstanding team of guides: Krishna, Santosh, and Assman.

From start to finish, their level of service was exceptional. Krishna led the group with calm confidence and professionalism, ensuring everything ran smoothly while always making us feel safe and well looked after. Santosh and Assman were equally fantastic, attentive, supportive, and always ready with a smile or a helping hand.

What truly stood out was the atmosphere they created. There was a constant sense of positivity and happiness throughout the trek, which made even the more challenging moments enjoyable. Their energy was infectious, and they brought the group together in such a natural way.

Communication was always clear, timely, and reassuring. Whether it was explaining the plan for the day, checking in on everyone’s wellbeing, or adapting to changing conditions, they handled everything with clarity and care.

Most importantly, I always felt completely safe. Their experience and attention to detail meant we could fully relax and enjoy the stunning surroundings without worry.

I couldn’t recommend this team more highly. If you’re considering a trekking adventure, having guides like Krishna, Santosh, and Assman makes all the difference, they truly turned a great trip into an unforgettable one. James

A huge thank you to Krishna, Santos and Asman for an amazing trip trekking the Himalayas. The trip was really well organised and the wonderful team made sure that we had a safe trip and an amazing time in the Himilayas.

Incredible!

Thanks for a truly wonderful trip. Krishna, Asman, Santos and the crew took such good care of us all and enabled us to have a safe, fun and epic journey into the high mountains. A true bucket list adventure. I don’t think I’ll ever see landscapes as majestic again. Thank you!

What a wonderful time. Everything

What a wonderful time. Everything was above 100%. The porters and all the team was truly exceptional I've been on many Treks and I have to say this one was one of the best for being spot-on.

Trip of a lifetime

From start to finish, this was an incredible experience. As my first solo trip and first trek, I didn’t know what to expect but it exceeded everything I imagined. I spent two unforgettable weeks in the Himalayas, and I already can’t wait to return!

The trek itself is breathtaking, just to name a few: the rhododendron forests, Poon Hill, the valley walk from Deurali to MBC, and of course the sunrise at ABC. Each moment more memorable than the last. The scale of it all is not something you can express in words or pictures. The Himalayas are extraordinary on their own, but the MBA team made this journey truly special! If you’re considering ABC, a guided tour with MBA is absolutely the way to go. The (assistant) guides and support staff went above and beyond. After long days of walking, they take exceptional care of you with welcoming tea houses, great food, sharing (so much!) knowledge and providing a warm, safe space. They constantly looked out for us, adjusted the pace to suit everyone and nothing was ever too much. You’re cared for as if you’re family. Tejshree, our incredible guide, and one of the first female guides(!), you led our group with intelligence, humor, kindness, and heart. You gave this trek a personal touch that made it so much more than just a hike. Thank you for giving it your all. Ujjwal, Dilli, and Anajana, you each brought something unique as assistant guides. Stepping up to lead at times couldn’t have been easy, but you handled it with confidence and care and showed that you have it in you to become lead guides like Tej someday! You are knowledgeable, responsible, social, and genuinely supportive, which I believe are just some of the important qualities for a guide. Even in rain and storms, you made us feel safe and kept our spirits high. That means more than words can express. A special thank you as well to the support staff—Amrit, Devan, Tuk, Sayson, Surya, and Khim. Your hard work and kindness did not go unnoticed! And of course I have to mention the rest of the team, the fellow travellers. It was so nice meeting you and getting to know each other over the past few weeks. We've had lots of fun, good talks and good games and I couldn't have wished for better company during this trek! See ya next time! Thank you for making it such a special and unforgettable experience! I will never forget the rain song.

I’ll miss you all dearly.
 Until next time, jam jam!

Incredible trip

This was an amazing trip with brilliant guides and support crew, a great group of fellow travellers and breathtaking views of the Himalayas.

The Sanctuary trek follows a fantastic route, which included seeing the sun rise at Poon Hill, passing through jungles with monkeys and an amazing climb through a snowy wonderland to Annapurna Base Camp. A real highlight was seeing the bright pink bloom of the rhododendron forest.

Our lead guide, Tejshree, was really impressive and not only made sure that we were all well prepared and informed but was also great fun. The other guides, Ujjwal, Anajana and Dilli, looked after us really well. A huge thanks also to our brilliant support staff - Amrit, Devan, Tuk, Sayson, Surya and Khim.

Amazing team for Annapurna base camp

Having the best local people to support you on the trek will make all the difference to your enjoyment of this trek and that is what you get when you use MBA. We had 4 amazing guides ( one head guide and 3 assistant guides plus support staff) and they couldn’t have been better. It’s not just the help and support you get while trekking, which was great as helps with pacing and best stop points along the way but it’s also the help you get at the end of the day ; where they make sure the accommodation and food etc is all organised and everyone is happy , plus the daily recap from all the participants and then advising what’s coming the next day. I always felt safe in their heads and if you had any concerns or problems they quickly resolved them ( my cramps broke twice and then guides lent me theirs when needed etc). When we were sharing accommodation with other groups we could easily see how much better our guides were ( more of them and far better trained and experienced). We never had to worry about anything and that allowed us to relax and enjoy the trek knowing we were well cared for. They even managed to get me a birthday cake up to base camp without me knowing so that will be a great memory. I’d strongly recommend using MBA for this trek and by extension any trek as the they really made sure we have the best time.

Thank you so much to the local guides and supporters ; Tej, and her team;

Anjana, Ujjwal, Dilliram, Surya, Amrit, Sayson, Tuk, Khim, and Devan.

Amazing!

Absolutely loved this trip. The route was amazing, in particular the poon hill sunrise hike and the route from MPC to ABC. If you’re considering doing this hike I would highly recommend booking!! The guides were excellent, in particular Tejshree the lead guide. (She was brilliant- really competent, but also injected some fun and humour to the trip!) assistant guides were also great- Ujjwall, Anjana and Dilli. They were super attentive and I felt really well taken care of during the trip. The support staff (Amrit, Devan, Tuk, Sayson, Surya, Khim) were so hardworking and really welcoming to us too! The kit list was great- would advise following, as I ended up needing a few bits I hadn’t been sure on packing!

Madeleine C.(April 2026)
Big WOW

Our trek was quite simply the time of our lives — we loved every single moment.

We felt incredibly lucky to experience just about every kind of weather imaginable, which only added to the sense of adventure. The constantly changing terrain and landscapes kept things fresh and exciting throughout, from lush greenery to dramatic alpine scenery. One of the standout highlights was walking through the beautiful rhododendron forests, and the sunrise at Poon Hill was absolutely breathtaking. Reaching Annapurna Base Camp itself was, of course, an unforgettable and emotional moment.

The trek is challenging in parts — especially the seemingly endless steps — but overall it’s very manageable. You quickly learn to make peace with the stairs! The regular tea and lunch stops break up the days nicely and help keep energy levels up. It was also our first time using trekking poles, and we were so glad we had them, particularly for those long descents and climbs.

What truly made this trip exceptional, though, was the people. Tej and her assistants, Ujjwal, Anajana, and Dilli, elevated the experience far beyond what we expected. Their humour, warmth, and constant encouragement made every day more enjoyable. Tej’s passion for trekking and the mountains is genuinely inspiring, and her depth of knowledge is incredible — she’s a fantastic role model, especially for young women. The whole team was attentive, making sure everyone felt happy, safe, and supported at all times. Their strong bond with each other created such a positive group dynamic that it naturally spread to all of us.

A huge thank you also goes to the support staff — Amrit, Devan, Tuk, Sayson, Surya, and Khim — for their hard work and kindness. We’re so grateful for everything they did behind the scenes, especially carrying our bags and always greeting us with a smile.

They even went above and beyond in the most unforgettable way — arranging a birthday surprise for someone in the group with a cake helicoptered all the way into Annapurna Base Camp. It was such a thoughtful and unique moment, and really speaks to the level of care and effort they put into making the experience special for everyone.

We had initially wondered if the food might become repetitive, but while menus are fairly similar across teahouses, there’s enough choice to keep things interesting, and we enjoyed trying something different each day. The accommodations are basic, as expected on a trek like this, but all part of the experience. One amusing reality: the walls are very thin — you can hear your neighbour breathing — so definitely bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper!

All in all, an unforgettable adventure that we would recommend wholeheartedly.

Incredible trip to Annapurna Basecamp with the most wonderful group of guides and support staff!

I couldn't have asked for a better experience for my first time trekking in the Himalayas. Our lead guide Tejshree did an amazing job of keeping everyone safe and informed as well as making every moment of the trek enjoyable. The assistant guides Ujjwal, Anjana and Dilli worked together as an brilliant team, providing excellent service and spreading out through the group keeping everyone's spirits high! The support team of Amrit, Devan, Tuk, Sayson, Surya and Kim were extremely friendly, and I felt confident knowing my pack would arrive safely to the teahouses. Their hard work does not go unnoticed! I would recommend this trip to anyone - all parts of it from the trek itself, to the evenings in the teahouses with your group and guides, to sharing highlights and lowlights (and usually the laughter that comes with that!) as well as of course the incredible views that come with the experience. The ABC trek and the Himalayas speak for themselves but what made this trip the most special was the support and hard work from the incredible group of guides and support staff we were so lucky to have.

Incredible experience

I can’t recommend this trip enough. From the route and the views, to the fellow trekkers and guide team, it was an absolutely amazing experience that I hope to remember forever. Such a cool opportunity to see a beautiful area of Nepal, while being supported by a kind, knowledgable and fun team. Huge shout out to Tejshree, Ujjwal, Anajana, Dilli and the support staff Amrit, Devan, Tuk, Sayson, Surya, Khim. Jam jam!

Barnaby P.(April 2026)
A brilliant experience

A brilliant experience top to bottom. Really can't recommend highly enough. The walking and views were second to none, an absolute once in a lifetime experience. The group was also fabulous - without a doubt it made the trip being surrounded by lovely and sociable people that all wanted to be there as much as the next.

Special shout out to the group of guides - Ujjwal, Anjana, Dilli, and Tej, along with all the porters were excellent - they were all helpful, caring , informative and very fun. They really helped make the trip what it was.

Only very minor caveat is just for people who are super fit and want something that pushes them I would suggest going for slightly harder hike/itinerary. This was more on the gentle side.

Gill T.(March 2026)
Amazing support team and stunning trek

The headlines are this is an amazing trek and the support team couldn’t have been better ; I’d strongly recommend both the trek and using MBA.

The trek is amazing ; very varied scenery and stunning Mountain View’s along the way and especially at the top at ABC.

I’d strongly recommend using MBA and their local support team. The support and help along the treks was great but also ; less obviously all the help once you arrive at the lodgings and lunch places make everything very easy and nothing is too much trouble for them.

I have been to Nepal before and hiked unguided ? Which is no longer permitted) so was wondering if I wanted a group but this was so good and made everything very easy. From knowing what was safe to eat ; to how long the treks were; helping ordering food; making sure we had rooms booked in the lodges ; helping with the crampons etc; setting a good pace for us; checking out health as we got higher up and much more.

They even got me a birthday cake to ABC and had the whole crew sing me happy birthday ! Thanks so much to tej, her team of guides ( Ujjwal Dilli and Anjeena ( apologies for spellings) and the supporters). Tej especially thanks so much for the help you gave ( I was unwell at the end of trek) and she couldn’t have helped me more if I was her own family. I’d recommend this trek and this team to anyone and they will always do anything you need to help you.

Incredible Trek!

If you are contemplating doing this trip, do it! It was a an experience of a lifetime from start to finish. From the first briefing session, you know you are in safe hands with the team of guides from MBA. Our lead guide Sabin ensured provided daily briefings to ensure had all the information we needed for the day ahead - from what to wear to what terrain to expect. The assistance guides Dilli, Santosh and Anjuna were amazing, they went to no ends to make sure we were safe, comfortable and having a good time. Extra shout out to Dili who not only kept moral high throughout the trek (jam jam!) but also made sure I was comfortable crossing the long suspension bridge at the end! The porters were also incredible, carrying the heavy loads every day and always there to greet us with a smile when we arrived. The walking is well paced and manageable, made all the better by the stunning views as you go. The scenery is ever changing as you wind through the jungle of the foothills and up to base camp where the views are indescribable. I'd recommend taking a moment at base camp to sit and listen to the constant echo of glacial cracks and noises in the distance. The trip wouldn't have been what it was without the fantastic group of trekkers we had, lots of laughs and comradery as we went made the trip even more special.

Incredible trip, couldn't recommend more

I would recommend this trip to absolutely everybody! The beautiful landscapes and wonderful group of people you meet along the way make this trip a once in a lifetime opportunity. The evenings and night times get cold, but the days were sunny and warm so take lots of layers! The food at the tea houses is delicious with a great range to choose from, but make sure to take plenty of snacks for during the day to keep your energy up! Sabin was an incredible lead guide, knowledgable and informative but also made it so much fun and made sure everyone was always enjoying themselves! Dilli, Santos and Anjuna were all kind, helpful and safe guides that made sure everything was running smoothly. This trip will be remembered forever, I will definitely be going on another one ASAP!

10/10! I couldn’t recommend more!

The Annapurna trek was nothing short of extraordinary. From start to finish, everything was impeccably organised allowing us to enjoy this experience without a single worry. The whole trail is breathtaking and everyday is different. Our lead guide Sabin was knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely so passionate about the region. He was able to answer any question we had, and shared fascinating insights into the geography, traditions, and local culture. We also had 3 assistant guides, Dilli, Anjuna, and Santosh. They were also brilliant throughout in their roles! The teahouses were welcoming, although they did get cold in the evening so wrap up! The food was far better than expected, and was good fuel for all the trekking. If you’re considering Annapurna Base Camp, a guided tour like this is absolutely the way to do it. I would recommend using these guys without hesitation. 10/10.

Jaw dropping beauty!

This trip is one of the best adventures I’ve ever had. If you want the big Himalaya views but also some jungle time (including monkeys!) this is the trip for you. My highlights were Poon Hill (cold but worth it), Machapuchare (from all angles), sunrise over Annapurna I (awe inspiring) and all the sweet dogs along the way. The guide team (Sabin, Dilli, Santosh and Anjuna) were fun, helpful and knowledgeable - I felt like I was in safe hands the whole time. The hero porters also deserve a shoutout! All the admin was completely seamless - my bag was left in London but MBA/Freedom Adventures managed to get it to Pokhara in time for the trek starting! I had a fabulous time and will be going back to the Himalayas as soon as possible! Jam jam!!

Vivienne J.(January 2026)
This was an amazing experience.

This was an amazing experience. The mountains were incredible and we were so lucky with the weather having brilliant sunshine during the day. A big thank you also to our guides Dilli, Santos and Angelina - for their smiles and good humour - nothing was too much trouble. Especially Dilli who did everything to make sure we all had a fantastic time.

Milena L.(January 2026)
Moments between peaks

I joined this group trek with the hope of stepping out of my shell and opening myself to new connections. While that wasn’t always easy for me, the care and attentiveness of the lead guide Sabin made all the difference. His kindness and effort to make sure I felt included allowed me to truly enjoy the journey. Every guide and assistant was exceptional, supportive, always present, and generous with their time and energy. Their warmth created a sense of safety that stayed with me throughout the trek, thank you Anjana, Dili and Santos . The mountains offered moments of pure stillness and wonder: watching the sun rise over Annapurna I, sharing lunch with breathtaking views at MBC, and sitting in silence as clouds drifted slowly past. This trek was more than a journey through the mountains; it was a gentle reminder to slow down, open up, and simply be present.

Sights, sounds, steps and soul food

A journey like this is not just about what you can see for miles on end and how hot / cold / tired / exhilarated you feel each day; all of that can be Googled. Adventurers like us who choose these trips need to know we will be given the chance to make the most of a short time in a region that commands so much more. Sabin and his fantastic team - Dilli, Santosh, Anjuna and our hardworking porters made sure everything we needed was provided, either physically or motivationally. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and although they had conducted multiple treks on this route it was like it was also their first. I felt safe, protected and informed right from booking the trip and Geeta answering endless questions to trekking the endless steps on the route with the team. By nature of my profession I am used to solo travel, leading trips and being responsible for groups; trusting my indépendance to another team was a big deal. Daily briefings, welfare checks and the team being available 24/7 kept me informed and prepared for each leg, each day. I got way more out of the experience than just fresh air and exercise. I hope other MBA trips have a bar set this high. I would 100% recommend this team to everyone wanting to learn about Nepal, this region and themselves. Thankyou so much.

Jared J.(January 2026)
Amazing time

This trip was an unbelievable experience. Everything was put together perfectly and the whole team was so attentive with their 25/7 service. Pujan was absolutely brilliant and was a great leader for our group. He was so knowledgable and was always checking in on everyone to make sure everything was okay. Santosh and Mohan were also brilliant and did so much for everyone to make sure they were having the best time. The porters were also very friendly

Travel to and from the trip

Our trips do not include flights, trains or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.

Meals

We do not include meals on this trek, as from experience we know that altitude and physical exercise mean appetites vary hugely. The cost of food also rises as you ascend, because it all has to be carried in by porters and yaks – very little can be grown locally. How much you spend per day will vary according to your choice of meal, but generally people spend between $15-$25 per person per day on meals and hot drinks. Below is an approximate breakdown of some items:

  • Dal baht: $4 to $7
  • Chow mein: $2 to $4
  • Eggs: $2 to $4
  • Toast: $1.50 to $3
  • Tea/hot chocolate: $1 to $3
  • Chocolate bars: $2 to $4

Teahouses will provide cold water free of charge; however, it will need to be treated to enable you to drink it. Please read the drinking water FAQ for our advice.

Miscellaneous costs

Other extra costs to be considered are:

  • Shower: $2-$4
  • WiFi: $2-5
  • Electricity: $2-5

Tips

It is customary in Nepal to tip guides and porters. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. You can give any tips to your lead guide at the end of your trip. This will then be shared amongst the whole team. For full transparency, the lead guide will distribute the tips to the guides and porters in your presence. It is customary for the guides to receive a higher share than the porters as they are more highly qualified.

A good rule of thumb is around $115pp as a tip, although the amount you give is entirely your choice.

If you would like to give an additional tip to a member of the team who has supported you personally, please do so directly and discretely.

Personal Expenses

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travellers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities. Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover to the maximum altitude visited on this trip (4130m) as well as for emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

Please remove all unnecessary packing before you leave home and ensure you take all plastic off the mountain to be disposed of in Kathmandu.

This will be one of the most challenging stretches of the whole trek, but your guide will help with the pace so that it's manageable for your group. Once at the village, refuel with a well-deserved hot meal and enjoy your first night in a Nepalese teahouse.

Cross a small stream by bridge, grab lunch surrounded by a beautiful lush forest and begin the short but steep ascent to Tadapani village – eyes peeled for Annapurna South and Machapuchare ('Fishtail' Mountain). From there it’s a slow descent to tonight’s destination, the village of Chuile.

See the landscape change by the second as the forest thickens into untamed jungle. After following the trail downhill to Ghurjung there's a steep ascent to Chhomrong, the last permanent village in the valley. FAQs

The preferred currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Whilst ATMs are available in the main cities, please do not rely on them as they are often out of order and most have a maximum withdrawal limit equivalent to about GBP300.

It's best to bring the bulk of your money with you in cash and exchange it at a bank or at one of the many money changers in Nepal - your guide will help you with this. Most major currencies are accepted, including GBP (Sterling), Euros and US Dollars, however Scottish or Northern Irish currency cannot be changed. Keep your exchange receipts in case you want to change any unused Rupees back into hard currency when you leave Nepal (it is illegal to export Nepalese Rupees as it is a closed currency).

You will need to carry a fairly large amount of cash while trekking, for the meals (see 'Not Included' above). We advise that you keep this in a waterproof bag and in your day bag along with your passport.

You can leave any luggage not needed on the trek at your hotel in Kathmandu.

This trip includes one porter for every two trekkers. They will carry up to 20-25kg of kit so your overnight bags and spare clothes will be transported for you (maximum 12kg per person). You will only need to carry a daypack with essentials in (extra layer, snacks, water, suncream, camera etc).

We work with some of the best leaders in the industry, every one of which is government licensed and very experienced. In order to ensure this high standard of performance, the host provides them with top-notch in-house training that covers advanced wilderness first aid, hyperbaric chambers, oxygen system, mountain rescue, incident management and Leave No Trace (LNT) principles to help keep the Himalayas pristine.

Although we schedule departure dates outside of the main monsoon season, weather conditions in any mountain region can be unpredictable and sometimes your host will need to revert to 'Plan B'.

No two trekking seasons are the same, but occasional landslides or heavy snowfall and avalanches have been known to lead to trail closures on this route – particularly in the areas around Machapuchare Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp. If the trail is closed or deemed unsafe your host will organise an alternative trek of similar difficulty and duration – usually to Mardi Base Camp.

Your host in Nepal can arrange a variety of extra experiences in Kathmandu, should you want to explore further. Please discuss these directly with your host, who will be able to book them for you.

Kathmandu Heritage Tour: Visit four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple). Duration: full day (approx. 08:00–15:00).

Spice Markets & Durbar Square: Explore Asan Market and Thamel, visiting spice and tea markets and learning about the cultural, culinary and medicinal uses of Nepali spices from local vendors. Finish at Kathmandu Durbar Square, home to historic temples and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Duration: approx. three hours (flexible timing).

Master the Arts: Head to Bhaktapur Durbar Square for a pottery workshop. Learn to spin the wheel and shape clay into simple items such as cups, bowls or vases, and observe traditional drying and firing techniques used by local potters. Duration: half day (approx. 08:00–12:30).

Nepali Cooking Class: Learn to prepare four traditional Nepali dishes with hands-on guidance, then enjoy one of your creations. This experience supports SASANE and their work addressing human trafficking, child marriage and violence against women. Duration: half day (morning or afternoon).

Yes! Lakeside Pokhara, with its laidback vibe, is a popular spot to relax after a trek. Although the tour starts and ends in Kathmandu, your host can arrange extra nights for you in Pokhara after your trek. They will simply shift your included bus transfer from Pokhara to Kathmandu and your final night's hotel reservation in Kathmandu to a later date for you, so you'll only need to pay for the additional accommodation in Pokhara.

Although most teahouses have the option to buy bottled water, we advise against it to reduce the use of plastic in the mountains (this ends up being burnt or dumped in landfill out of sight). You will instead be provided with cold water that needs treating. There are a wide range of products available these days which are more effective than traditional purification tablets - some trekkers like to use UV handheld devices such as a Steripen but other options are available - just be sure to check the performance in freezing conditions.

Whilst there are no domestic flights included in this itinerary, should you choose to add one to your booking as an additional service you should be aware of the following:

Nepal's mountainous terrain and weather make for challenging flying conditions and sadly more incidents (including fatalities) occur here than in other countries. Since 2013 the EU has banned all Nepalese domestic airlines from flying within EU airspace in order to raise awareness of the poor safety record (although no Nepalese airlines were operating routes within the EU prior to the ban). You should be aware that flying in Nepal is an identified risk: please consider this carefully before booking. Additional information can be found on the Aviation Safety Network entry for Nepal as well as the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office travel advice for Nepal

Domestic airlines in Nepal are generally not accredited by any internationally recognised safety audit systems and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal does not operate to the same standards as those of Western nations.

What does Much Better Adventures do about this?

Much Better Adventures collaborates with other UK travel companies that arrange for independent air-safety auditors to visit Nepal annually to assess the local airlines. Much Better Adventures then only uses the carriers that were approved as part of the most recent audit. If any concerns are subsequently raised about an approved airline between audits, we put them on hold until the auditors are satisfied that safety standards are being met.

Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover to the maximum altitude visited on this trip (4130m) as well as for emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip, depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Nepal’s cuisine is shaped by its mountainous geography, agricultural traditions, and strong cultural ties to India and Tibet. Meals are typically hearty and practical, centred around rice, lentils, seasonal vegetables, and preserved foods, with meat used more sparingly in many regions.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, there is a wide range of hotels and restaurants serving high-quality food. However, in the remote trekking regions, limited infrastructure (including a lack of refrigeration) means teahouses tend to offer a similar, simple menu throughout. It is generally advisable to avoid meat in more remote teahouses, as freshness cannot be guaranteed—your guide will advise accordingly. A vegetarian or vegan diet is often the most suitable, whilst a lactose-free diet is also not too restrictive. Gluten-free diets, however, can be accommodated but are more limited and repetitive.

Meals in trekking regions are built around dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetables), along with variations of potatoes, noodles, soups, breads, rice, pasta, and even pizza—sometimes with egg, vegetables, cheese, or tinned tuna. Desserts may include apple pie, chocolate pudding (often with custard), or cake. Breakfast typically consists of toast, eggs, pancakes, Tibetan bread, porridge, or muesli.

Fresh fruit is rarely available, and fresh vegetables become scarcer at higher altitudes. While carbohydrates are plentiful, meals can lack variety and certain nutrients, so bringing snacks such as nuts or dried fruit is recommended.

Some dietary requirements and allergies may not be well understood in remote areas. Your guide will help communicate your needs, but flexibility and preparation are essential when trekking in these regions.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be well catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance. There are plenty of options available both in cities and along trekking routes. Common dishes include dal bhat, vegetable momos (dumplings), vegetable noodle soup, and fried rice or noodles with vegetables and/or egg. Potatoes, Tibetan bread, pasta, and pizza are also widely available.

Vegan Vegan diets can be well catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance. Porridge is a common breakfast and can be made with water on request, though it is often prepared with milk powder by default. Dal bhat is the main staple, though some versions may include ghee - so do check. Momos may contain egg in the dough. While carbohydrates are easy to find, sources of vegan protein are limited, so bringing snacks is recommended.

Kosher Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are not available in remote teahouses, so a Kosher diet cannot be accommodated on this trip. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal Certified Halal meat is not available in remote teahouses, although it can be found in Kathmandu and other major cities. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-free diets are difficult to accommodate in trekking regions of Nepal. Please inform your host in advance, but be aware that options are limited and often repetitive. Many staple foods—such as Tibetan bread, noodles, pasta, pancakes, and muesli—contain gluten, making breakfast particularly restrictive. You may often rely on eggs as an alternative. Additionally, powdered soups, seasonings, and soy sauce frequently contain gluten, and cross-contamination is a significant risk in teahouse kitchens. Naturally gluten-free options do exist, including dal bhat, potatoes, eggs, plain rice, and simple soups. However, flexibility and preparation are essential, and your guide will assist in communicating your needs.

Lactose Free Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many dishes are naturally lactose-free, but you will need to specify at each meal that you require food without milk, milk powder, ghee, butter, or cheese. Porridge and muesli can be prepared with water on request. As sources of healthy fats may be limited, bringing supplementary snacks is recommended. Flexibility remains important in remote areas, and your guide will help communicate your requirements.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.

This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

The main trekking season in Nepal is from September to May (before or after the monsoon). The trekking season can be split into three seasons:

Winter (Dec-Feb): Despite being seen as ‘off-season’ this is often the best time to trek in Nepal. The nights can be very cold (down to at least -10ºC/14F) at Annapurna Base Camp but the trails are quieter and the mountain views are often at their best due to the crisp dry air and clear sunny skies.

Pre-Monsoon/Spring (Mar-May): Spring (particularly April and May) is the mildest time to trek in Nepal and magnificent rhododendron forests bloom along the Annapurna Sanctuary route at this time of year. It will be hot in the lowlands (30ºC/86F) but more comfortable as you gain elevation. Rain is not uncommon and snow cover is likely at Base Camp. Night-time temperatures should remain above freezing for the most part but can still drop below zero at Base Camp.

Post-Monsoon/Autumn (Sep-Nov): The rains can sometimes persist into September but in general this time of year is characterised by sunny, relatively mild days and clear skies. It can get cold and windy at higher altitudes and nights can be cold (typically -5ºC/23F) at the high points.

Of course, mountain weather is notoriously hard to predict and snow and extremes of temperature can be expected on any trip so come prepared.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 482kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
