Key Information

Day 1

Welcome to the Dolomites!

View of Arabba village in the Italian Dolomites in the sunshine.

Driving

2.5hrs

Meet your host at Venice Marco Polo Airport and jump in your transfer to Arabba. This charming alpine village sits at the foot of the Sella Massif and is surrounded by dramatic peaks and lush valleys, boasting endless hiking trails and a front-row seat to views of the UNESCO-listed Dolomite landscapes. The village itself has a quaint atmosphere with its traditional architecture, charming locally-owned restaurants, and authentic Ladin culture, which includes a unique language, cuisine, and traditions. Your base for the entire trip is a comfortable family-run hotel with a wellness centre, the perfect spot to kick back and relax after busy days outdoors. Your mountain guide will join you on the morning of Day 2 to go through the details of the trek before you set off, but tonight you'll meet up with your fellow travellers and get to know each other over dinner at your hotel's excellent restaurant.

Day 2

Hike the Viel del Pan trail in the shadow of mighty Marmolada

Group of hikers resting below views of Viel del Pan in the Italian Dolomites

Hiking

4-5hrs · 13km · 300m up · 1000m down

Rise early for a hearty breakfast before kicking off your adventure with a scenic cable car ride from Arabba to Porta Vescovo (payable locally). Today, you’ll be treated to a picturesque introduction to hiking in the Dolomites, with trails meandering over the flower-strewn slopes of Sass Ciapel. From the Gorza refuge, follow the enchanting Viel del Pan path towards Passo Pordoi. Keep an eye out for playful marmots and take in sweeping views of the majestic Marmolada, dubbed the 'Queen of the Dolomites' with its towering 3343m peak. Enjoy a brief stop at the cosy Viel del Pan refuge, where you can savour a cup of coffee or a slice of cake surrounded by unforgettable mountain vistas. By noon, you’ll arrive at Passo Pordoi, where a second cable car awaits (also payable locally) to whisk you up to Sass Pordoi, a panoramic peak teetering at 2950m high. Refuel with lunch at Rifugio Maria, soaking in the unparalleled vistas stretching out in every direction. To wrap up, trace your way back down through the serene forests of Pordoi Pass and return to Arabba, where your evening is free to explore the delicious restaurants in town with your group.

Day 3

Hike the stunning Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park

A woman with a big hiking backpack standing on a big boulder at the shore of Le de Limo in Italian Dolomites.

Hiking

4-5hrs · 16km · 600m up · 600m down

Today, you'll depart from Arabba for a short transfer to Capanna Alpina, the gateway to your hike through the breathtaking Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park. Established in 1980, this iconic park spans over 250 square kilometres and features a stunning variety of rugged peaks, gentle summits, and expansive plateaus. Its complex geomorphology and diverse karst formations make it a paradise for geologists. You’ll set off on a route that winds along well-maintained trails, taking you through lush meadows and ancient pine forests, with spectacular views of iconic peaks such as the Cunturines and La Varela. Your destination is the picturesque turquoise Lago di Limo, beautifully framed by rugged mountains – a perfect spot to pause and enjoy the scenery, or to take a dip in its cold, clear waters. For lunch, you’ll head to the nearby Utia de Gran Fanes, a cosy mountain refuge where you can tuck into traditional Alpine dishes that will refuel you for the return hike this afternoon. You'll follow the same trail, providing a final opportunity to appreciate the unforgettable landscapes from a new perspective, before heading back to Capanna Alpina and transferring back to Arabba.

Day 4

Alpine wanders between Andraz Castle, Sief Pass and Setsass

Andraz castle Dolomites

Hiking

4hrs · 12km · 600m up · 700m down

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and take a brief transfer to Andraz Castle, the iconic landmark of the Fodom Valley. Dating back to around 1000 A.D., this ancient castle at centre of the Arabba Valley played a strategic role in controlling regional trade routes. Following a brief exploration of the castle's impressive exterior, you’ll embark on a circular hike that leads you to Forcella Sief and into the breathtaking Setsass group. Along the way, you'll spot significant historical sites from World War I, located between Col di Lana and the Setsass group, all while immersed in pristine natural habitats. Next, return on the Via della Vena, a fascinating path that traces the old iron supply road through the territory of Buchenstein. Expect some stunning Alpine landscapes, featuring lush forests, rolling pastures, charming villages, and breathtaking vistas of various Dolomite massifs, including Pelmo, Civetta, Marmolada and Boé. Finally, enjoy a late lunch at a local restaurant, where dishes are crafted using fresh, zero-mile ingredients sourced from the Belluno area, such as Lamon beans and barley. Afterward, you’ll transfer back to the hotel, where you can enjoy some well-deserved relaxation or take a leisurely stroll into town before your group dinner (included).

Day 5

From Mont de Andraz to Monte Pore

Male trekker with backpack in the mountains enjoying a picturesque view of the Dolomite peaks near Rifugio Nuvolau, Italy.

Hiking

5-6hrs · 13km · 650m up · 850m down

Wake up early, fuel up with a hearty breakfast, and prepare to tackle one of the most challenging yet rewarding hikes of your trip. Today, you'll embark on a circular trail through the lush grasslands of Mount Andraz, leading to the Averau Refuge – one of the most iconic sites in the Dolomites and a popular stop for hikers traversing the renowned Alta Via 1. This gem of a mountain hut, nestled beneath the rocky spires of Averau Peak, is known for its excellent cuisine as much as for its stunning vistas – The Sunday Times has named it as one of the top 10 mountain restaurants in the Alps. If you're feeling energetic and if time permits, consider following your guide on a short detour up the steep slopes to the summit of Nuvolau (2575m) where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking 360° views. After soaking in the magnificent panoramas of the iconic Five Towers and the Giau Pass, make your way back along the slopes of Monte Pore, keeping an eye out for local wildlife and the rich variety of plant life unique to this ecosystem. The hike will conclude in the quaint village of Larzonei, where you'll jump on a transfer back to your hotel.

Day 6

The thrilling Kaiserjaeger path and the war tunnels of Lagazuoi

Hikers crossing a bridge ahead of the Ferrata Lagazuoi in the Italian Dolomites.

Via Ferrata

4-5hrs · 11km · 670m up · 670m down

On your final day in the Dolomites, prepare for an exciting hike and short via ferrata that will get your heart pumping with steep, vertical sections. This route is ideal for those new to via ferratas – it's exposed, but not overly technical. After a quick transfer to the Lagazuoi cable car, begin with a steep ascent past World War I ruins, zigzagging to the start of the via ferrata. Here, you'll gear up with harnesses and helmets before navigating a series of ledges that lead to a 10m long, 25m high suspension bridge and a well-protected but exposed ledge. Guided by an experienced Alpine guide, you'll learn to safely tackle the most challenging sections. A steep path then leads to the ridge and the summit of Piccolo Lagazuoi (2772 m) and finally to the Lagazuoi refuge, home to one of the best panoramic terraces in the Dolomites. Enjoy a well-deserved lunch in this stunning setting before descending via original war tunnels and Austrian trenches, exploring dark passages with headlamps provided by your guides. Inside, you’ll see remains of machine gun posts and observation points, plus a large 'window' with incredible photo opportunities. Return to Falzarego Pass, where a transfer will take you back to the hotel for farewell drinks and dinner.

*If you are not comfortable with the exposed trails on this day, you'll have the option to transfer up and down from the summit by cable car (at your own expense). Please see the Difficulty Rating section for more details.

Transfers

On Day 1 your driver will meet you at Venice Marco Polo Airport (at 14:30 at the latest; exact timings will be confirmed by your host prior to your trip, depending on the group's incoming flights). You'll be transferred to Arabba as a group, which is approximately two and a half hours away. On Day 7, your host will transfer your group from Arabba back to Venice Marco Polo Airport, where you'll arrive at around 12:30. This can be dependent on traffic, therefore please don't book a flight departing before 15:30 on Day 7 in case of delays.

Please note that alternative transfers between the airport and the Dolomites are very expensive, and connections by public transport are limited and often not available. We therefore recommend that in order to join the group transfer, you ensure you leave ample time between your flight arrival time and the transfer departure time of 14:30. Your transfer won't be able to wait much beyond 14:30, so in the case of significant delays, the best option is to get an official taxi which you can find just outside the terminal. This will be an expensive option (approx. €300) for a one-way transfer to Selva di Cadore. For more info and bookings you can contact +39 041 5964 (24-hour service) and for more details on the fare that will be applied, ask the taxi staff before getting on board. Please remember to let your host know if your journey is delayed.

If the timings of your flights allow, you may choose to leave your luggage in storage at Venice Airport and spend some hours in the city before or after the trip, or perhaps extend your trip with a city break. There are regular shuttle buses which connect the airport to Venice (Piazzale Roma), taking approximately 20 minutes (€20 return ticket).

Travel options

Venice Marco Polo Airport is accessible via various direct flights from the UK and mainland Europe. Flights from the US generally connect through Madrid, London or Frankfurt.

For those who wish to avoid flying, Venezia Mestre is well connected with high-speed trains from London, via Paris. The journey will take an average of 21 hours and usually involves two changes.

Given the trip begins with an afternoon transfer from Venice Airport, you might consider arriving the day before and taking the opportunity to visit the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage City of canals, art and romance. When visiting Venice, check first if you are required to pay the Venice Access Fee (applicable to some dates only).

Known as one of the top dining spots in Arabba, Miky’s Grill serves traditional Tyrolean and Ladin recipes with a contemporary twist, combining the rich, hearty flavours of the mountains with Mediterranean influences. The restaurant’s menu is seasonal, typically featuring a selection of authentic, handmade fresh pasta dishes, chargrilled meats, and a variety of fresh vegetable dishes it also offers tasty desserts and pastries. Each included dinner will consist of a set menu with a choice of dishes. On the remaining evenings you’ll have the freedom to explore other dining options in town, such as local pubs and pizzerias (or you can dine à la carte at Miky’s Grill). Lunches are not included in the trip, but each day you’ll have the opportunity to stop at charming mountain huts offering a range of delicious local options, from sandwiches to hearty hot meals. You might also find polenta with mushrooms and pastin, a local specialty from Belluno made with seasoned minced pork or beef.

Vegetarians, vegans, and guests with dietary restrictions or allergies can be accommodated, though vegan options may be more limited. Simply note your requirements on your passenger information form.

What is the accommodation like?

Hotel Mesdi, Arabba.
Arabba

Your base for the entire trip is the lovely, 3-star Hotel Mesdi – a cosy haven in the charming village of Arabba. You'll stay in comfortable, ensuite rooms on a twin-share basis, which have classic Alpine decor, warm wooden furnishings, TVs, and stunning views of the Dolomites. The hotel also has a wellness centre with a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, and a hydromassage pool – perfect for unwinding after a day outdoors. Each morning, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast buffet, and in the evening, the on-site restaurant serves delicious Ladin and Italian dishes, bringing you the authentic flavours of the region right to your table.

The inviting and picturesque village of Arabba, nestled in the heart of the Dolomites, brims with Alpine character. Despite its compact size, the village is alive with traditional chalets, rustic wooden lodges, and a selection of great restaurants. A hub for winter sports during the snowy season, in summer it transforms into a paradise for hikers, climbers, and cyclists eager to explore lush valleys, winding trails, and sweeping mountain vistas. Unlike some of the more touristy resorts in the region, Arabba offers a more peaceful and relaxed experience. The village’s cafes, shops, and restaurants are all within easy walking distance of the hotel, making it ideal for an evening stroll.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).

This trip has been rated as Moderate

You'll be hiking an average of 4-5 hours daily (excluding breaks) in a mountain environment so you’ll need to be in good physical shape and have ideally some previous hiking experience, both for your safety and to enjoy the trip to the fullest. You'll be led by expert, local mountain guides who know the area inside out, so you'll be in safe hands.

Over five days you can expect to cover around 12-16km per day, with elevation gains and losses up to 1000m over uneven, rocky terrain with some sustained ascents or descents which should not be underestimated. The guide will assess the group's fitness, so the routes may be slightly shortened or extended on occasion keeping in mind what's best for your group. If you are not used to multi-day treks then putting in some weekend hikes and physical preparation (cardio and strength training) in advance is advisable.

The trip also includes an extremely scenic via ferrata route on the Falzarego Pass, where you'll be led by qualified Alpine guides along iron steps built into the rock and through a system of ledges up to a suspension bridge about 10m long and 25m high. You'll then cross an exposed ledge and climb along historic WWI trenches that lead to the ridge and to the top of the Piccolo Lagazuoi, a 2780m summit. On the way down, you'll go through tunnels and old trenches which are equipped with cables, but expect some steepness as well as damp, dark conditions. Overall, the path is exposed and presents a few vertical passages but it is not technically difficult. However, this is not suitable if you suffer from severe claustrophobia or a fear of heights and it's important to be prepared to hike up and down some really steep sections and uneven terrain.

What if i need to skip an activity?

Should you wish to opt out of the via ferrata on Day 6, there is the opportunity to travel to/from the summit by cable car; however, please note that any additional transport costs would need to be paid locally. If you decide to skip the ascent, descent or both sections, please be aware you may be spending a few hours waiting for the group to complete the full hike - however, Lagazuoi Hut is very comfortable and offers absolutely stunning views so you shouldn't get bored! Please just speak to your guide locally if you have any concerns about this day.

What will I need to carry?

During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal rucksack with your essential items for the day; you can leave your main luggage at your hotel.

The Dolomite Mountains offer some of the best weather in all of the Alps. The summer months (July to September) have warm temperatures and plenty of sun. It is also not unheard of for snow to fall on higher ground during the summer, and patches of snow may still be present into July. While the average maximum temperature may reach some 30°C (86 °F) on the valley floor, it can still feel a little fresh in the wind or in the shade. July and August are the hottest months and carry the greatest risk of thunderstorms, which can be torrential and usually occur in the afternoon. Being well-prepared and equipped for all these eventualities is essential.

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping and laundry.

Our recommended travel insurance provider is Campbell Irvine, as their insurance offers all of the above.

Optional Private Room Upgrade

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 239kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

If bad weather comes in (such as storms, heavy rain and poor visibility), your host will consider the conditions and plot an alternative route, which may involve sitting out any extreme weather in one of the huts. This is an unlikely event in the summer months, but your hosts are experienced mountain guides with a lot of successful treks in this part of the world under their belt, so you are in the best of hands.

You'll be led by a local, expert, English-speaking mountain guide from Day 2 to Day 5. On the via ferrata route on Day 6, you'll be accompanied by one qualified Alpine guide for groups of up to six, and two qualified Alpine guides for groups of seven or more. Whilst your guide will not meet you until Day 2 of the trip, your host will pick you up at the airport on Day 1, assist you with the check in a the thotel and provide you with all the details and information you need to meet your group for dinner on Day 1. A WhatsApp group will also be created ahead of departure to facilitate communication with your fellow travellers as well as your host before and during the trip.

The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles (at least 2L) to fill up at the mountain huts to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

It may not always be possible to pay for lunches by card as you'll be buying lunch from huts high in the mountains, so it is recommended that you carry cash with you. We recommend that you budget around €15 per day to cover your lunches and a drink, and around €20-35 for each of the three evening meals which are not included in the trip cost. In addition, on Day 2 you'll be required to pay in cash locally for cable car tickets, due to local requirements. You'll take two cable cars (one to get to the trailhead and one to reach a hut and viewpoint for lunch), so please budget approximately €50 total per person for this. ATMs are available in Arabba should you need to withdraw any money locally.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
