What to Expect

Friday: Arrival and Dogsledding

Your guide will collect you from Alta City centre and bring you to the Holmen Husky Lodge, just south of the main city.

Once you arrive, your guides will provide you with thermal suits and instruct you on how to handle the dogsled. From here, it’s time to get out and have fun with the pups! You’ll be able to enjoy a 60-minute guided dog sled ride through the evening air.

Once you’re back, enjoy a well-deserved hot shower and then a delicious dinner in the dining room of the beautiful, renovated barn.

Then, sit back and relax in the lodge, but make sure to leave time for a dip in the outdoor-jacuzzi and a visit to the sauna for that truly Finnish experience.

When it’s time for bed, head to your cosy Tipi bungalows, which has a floor-to-top window, that lets you watch the stars overhead. If you’re lucky you might get a glimpse of the infamous Northern Lights.

Saturday: Dog Sledding to the Mountain Cabin

Fill up on a Finnish breakfast before you begin your dog sledding adventure.

You’ll begin by loading up the dogs and the gear, before driving south of Alta to the starting point on the edge of the Finnmarksvidda mountain plateau.

From here, you can begin the journey into the untamed arctic wilderness, as your dog team pulls you steadily along. You’ll stop for lunch about halfway along the trail.

For the overnight, you will visit a mountain cabin and after you have tended to the dogs, it’s time for your own dinner.

Relax in the evening, and even take some time to kick back in the sauna. Don’t forget to keep a close-eye on the sky, the Aurora might appear right above you.

Sunday: Mountain Cabin to Basecamp

On Sunday morning, it’s an early start as you prepare your dogs for the return trip.

Then, it’s back on the trail and homeward bound as you travel back to the Holmen Husky lodge. Relax in the lodge with a drink and celebrate an unforgettable trip.

Enjoy your last night in the tipi bungalows under the stars, as you have one final search for the Northern Lights.

Monday: Departure

After a well-rested night under the stars, enjoy breakfast in the lodge before heading back to Alta center or straight to the airport the rest of your journey.

On the first and last night, you will stay in Tipi bungalows. These come with a double bed, wood-burning stove, comforters and heated blankets. They are insulated against the winter’s cold and one section of the wall has been replaced with a floor-to-top window that lets you look out over the night sky.

On the rest of the trip, you will stay in mountain cabins. These are more basic as they do not have a running shower but the lodge still has a sauna and facilities you can use.

The Holmen Husky Lodge itself is a bright, cosy lodge with a restaurant, bar, sauna and jacuzzi.

The Finnmark plateau is a paradise for dog sledding and one of the last great wildernesses in the world. In addition to this, it hosts the longest dogsled race in Europe. Holmen Husky Lodge is situated in a remote area just outside the city centre of Alta which makes it a great spot to experience the Northern Lights.

Alta City - or the city of Northern Lights as it is affectionally known - is located in the Northernmost county of Finland. Thanks to its subarctic and stable climate, it is the perfect choice for those seeking out the Northern Lights.

It’s history as a Northern Lights city actually dates back 1899 when the world’s first Northern Lights observatory was built on the top of Mt. Haldde. More recently, the Northern Lights cathedral was built in Alta City, inspired by the cascading Aurora waves, and is an incredible example of modern architecture.

Start point?
You will be met in Alta City Centre or the Alta City Airport (ALF) at 16:00 and transported to the Husky Lodge. You’re free to book any flight arriving on Friday no later than 15:00.

Finish point?
Your tour will end in Alta City or at the Alta City Airport at 10:00. You are free to book any flight leaving after this time.

Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

Getting there and away?
Alta City can be reached by domestic flights to Alta City Airport (ALF). Your host can pick you up from the airport, or you can take the airport bus into the centre of the city and you’ll be collected from there.

For extra financial protection against unforeseen circumstances such as erupting Icelandic volcanoes, we recommend you book your flights using a credit card.

On average, you will dog sled for 5-6 hours per day. You will be able to drive your own sled, with two people per sled, once your guide has given you sufficient instruction.

Much Better Adventures are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of solo travelers and very small groups of 2 or 3, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

No experience is required for this adventure. You’ll learn all needed skills throughout the trip.

No, unfortunately, the Northern Lights are notoriously unpredictable so it is impossible to say that you will definitely see them. The chances are highly dependent on the weather and visibility, as you will need clear skies to view them properly.

However, this trip will definitely increase your chances as you will be staying in a remote location, away from light pollution and in a tipi bungalow where you can watch the sky all night if you wish.

The Holmen Husky Lodge serves a variety of food that commonly includes meat, dairy and wheat ingredients, among many others. There is also food made from local ingredients, including moose, reindeer, and fish.

Your host will provide you with:

  • Thermal suit
  • Mittens
  • Hat
