Kayaking
Grab breakfast at your hostel and then head to the put-in point at Gudvangen. When you arrive, your guide will get you set up with your wetsuit, kayaking boots, dry bag and waterproof camera/phone box and all of your paddle gear. You'll have a safety briefing and an introduction to sea kayaking before heading out for your first days unforgettable kayaking down the beautiful Nærøyfjord. You'll stop off along the way for breaks and to admire the scenery before arriving at the campsite in late afternoon. Enjoy a well-deserved break and the stunning scenery before tucking into a hot dinner and make merry around the campfire. If you're feeling up to it, there is the option of going for a short walk to get a better view of the fjord from above.
Day 3

Hiking
Wake up in a Norwegian paradise and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before packing your bag, ready for the day's hike. Your aim is to reach the Breiskrednosi summit 1189m above the Nærøyfjord and get a spectacular view of the fjord from above. Drink in the views over the fjord from the top with your group. Head back down to your campsite and enjoy dinner round the campfire before another night under the stars.

An unforgettable trip that’s not to be missed!!
The kayaking and hiking trip in Norway was certainly an unforgettable experience and one I would recommend to anyone with an appetite for adventure.
Our guide, Callum, met us at the airport and immediately facilitated us getting to know each other, putting us at ease and bonding as a new group. I’ve met some incredible people on this trip and shared a lot of laughs.❤️
The hostel we stayed at in Voss was lovely and has a lovely sauna overlooking the lake so you can do a cold dip in the lake and run up the slope to warm up in the sauna! Absolutely brilliant way to kick off the trip.
Callum gave us all the information and tips we needed to get ready for kayaking, having not done a lot of kayaking before this was definitely helpful! Throughout the trip he kept a great balance of professionalism, making sure we were safe, comfortable and most importantly, having fun and making great memories.
With a high sense of camaraderie following our day on the water, we went into the hike with a great excitement and a bit of gratitude (at least on my part), that the upper body would get a bit of a rest whilst the legs took the workload for day 2’s activities. The hike was well paced by Callum, with regular water/snack breaks, checking in on us and making sure we were all together and of course taking in all the best views.
Day 3 saw us take back to the kayak, for more incredible sights and fun on the water.
The equipment provided on the trip was great; given that it was -5 degrees at night, the fact that I was hot overnight says something about the sleeping bags!! Unzipping the tent in the morning to the views of the fjord is unbeatable.
The activities on this trip are a great balance of challenge and adventure that kept it feeling like an accomplishment on holiday and not a major endurance event that you wish you’d trained for.
The sights were beautiful, the trip was well organised, the food was good, the campfire was kept roaring🔥 and the toilets….well, it is a camping trip after all.
I would absolutely recommend this trip.
Amazing aventure!
The views throughout the trip were just breathtaking. The kayaking was fun and the hiking was challenging at times, but 100% worth it. We were incredibly lucky to have Callum as our host. Callum was brilliant, super knowledgeable, friendly, experienced, but most of all he helped everyone through the trickier parts and took pictures all the time. He also made sure we were well fed and 'watered'. He even made us pancakes for our last breakfast. Our team was amazing, we laugh a lot. Thank you to the whole team, you were "La crème de la crème". Such an unforgettable experience!
Just book it!!!
There's a reason why this trip is so popular and has such good reviews!
I was hesitant to book at first as it was my first time going solo, however my god I'm glad I did. The trip was much better than I expected, and the scenery was everything you picture when you dream of the Fjords!
I'm a seasoned white water kayaker and love a good hike, the kayaking nonetheless was thoroughly enjoyable - how can you not enjoy yourself being somewhere so beautiful! The hike was hands down the best I've done, it was certainly challenging (but fun) at points in the snow and ice, but seriously worth it for the views, plus I love a challenge!
The trip felt seamlessly organised, I get bored quite quickly and there wasn't a second of boredom the whole time. The kayaking equipment, tents and sleeping bag were good quality and clean, I brought my own sleeping mat though. There was ample food for a hungry boy like me, with lots of snacks for the days adventures.
The group was a good mix of ages and abilities and we all got on well. There was one person though that really made the trip that bit better, our guide Benji, he was an absolute star from start to finish. He instantly settled any nerves you might have going on your first solo trip with his friendly and funny personality, Benji felt like a friend you'd known for years!
All in all, a strong contender for the best holiday I've done, and well worth the money, I've told anyone who's asked, even those that haven't, about it to book it!
I had a great time
I had a great time kayaking and hiking in Norway - first time in Norway and with Much Better Adventures. We had amazing weather, a great group of people, yummy and endless food, and Benji from Nordic Ventures was a great guide. Everything was well organised, all equipment included and the views from the top of the mountain were incredible. Would definitely recommend!
Incredible experience1 Jonnie was an
Incredible experience1 Jonnie was an amazing guide and made us all extremely comfortable. Despite travelling in April with weathers as cold as -9 degrees celsius, we were comfortable and warm at night with double sleeping bags. The quality of guiding was exceptional - Jonnie was very competent and fantastic company. The views during kayaking and hiking were breathtaking! 10/10 I would recommend this to anyone!
Just do it
Just brilliant from start to end. Super kit, amazing scenery and a lovely and knowledgeable guide. First class
Magical trip, tougher than expected
We did the 3 night (hostel - kayak - camp - hike - camp - kayak) trip and despite it being -8 overnight (tough) I had such a good time. It was really well organised considering how faffy the nature of this trip is with all the different elements. We got lucky with the weather for the hike day and the group dynamic was amazing. Everyone made an effort with each other and this made the trip extra memorable.
Our guide Callum worked so hard. He kept the group morale up when it was tough, he made sure everyone stayed together in a team and was super encouraging and fun. He cooked great food in the evenings, explained everything so clearly and helped us all so much even though there was a lot of moving parts. Shout out for doing washing-up in a semi-frozen fjord at 10pm after 9 hours schlepping up a hill, still with a smile on his face. 👏
Tips: neoprene/waterproof gloves, and spare pair for the mornings/ evenings. Lots of layers. Be prepared to smell like bonfire at the end. And def invest in good waterproof boots and gaiters- there was a lot of deep snow on the hike in mid April. Coming down was tricky too as no deliberate sliding was permitted - safety was paramount. RIP one fingernail.
Thanks to everyone in the group, esp Callum.
I hope to come back to Norway sometime- the fjords are pretty magical, and doing it in a group is the way to go.
Majestic Fjords
What an epic way to celebrate my 40th birthday. Kayaking through the majestic fjords, wild camping on a beautiful beach, and hiking through snowy trails to summit the incredible Breiskrednosi – it was truly an unforgettable adventure.
What made this trip even more special was our awesome guide, Benji, and the company of an incredible group of fellow adventurers. Plus Mother Nature blessed us with the perfect weather, enhancing every moment of this amazing expedition. Would highly recommend it!
Great trip - the equipment
Great trip - the equipment provided was great, particularly given the sub zero and rainy weather.
Our guide Callum was brilliant, providing great advice, company, and food!
The scenery whilst kayaking and mountain hiking was amazing!
Incredible Experience
This trip was by far my best experience to date and massively exceeded my expectations. Every aspect was so well planned out and the food and drink provided was incredible. It helped that our tour guide, Benji, was a great cook!
The kayaking was tough and tiring but the scenery was unreal and you can go at your own pace. The hike was far tougher than I expected due to the heavy snowfall on the mountain but still an incredible experience and felt like such an achievement at the end, despite not making it to the summit. The part they call "The Slog", really is a killer but the views from this point are out of this world.
Would highly recommend this trip to anyone and would most definitely do it again. Many thanks to Benji for making this weekend as enjoyable as possible for our group!
Such an amazing trip!
Can’t thank the team that put together and ran the most wonderful weekend in Norway! Really slick operation with huge shout to our guide, Callum, who was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble and he continued to encourage us when we found things challenging. We enjoyed beautiful scenery, met new friends and had a blast. Do it, you won’t regret it.
Amazing trip. Highly recommended.
This was an absolutely awesome trip. From spectacular scenery on the Fjord, time on the water in the kayaks to the camping everything went perfectly. The tents and sleeping bags provided were very good quality and I had no problem sleeping. The food provided was of very good quality, freshly cooked at the campsite and there was something to suit everybody. I can't think of a single thing to complain about.
Massively rewarding trip. Beautiful views and a beautiful group.
This has been the best 'holiday' I've ever had. The views throughout the entire journey are simply astounding. Just watching how the light hits the mountains and fjords differently throughout the day is captivating.
The group was amazing and pulled together to get through some really tough conditions.
Our guide, Jan, was vastly experienced and knowledgeable about the history of the area. He ensured everybody was okay and kept us (very!) well fed throughout the trip. He's a genuinely lovely man, I'm really glad to have had him as a guide.
I'd never kayaked before but he helped me get the hang of it quickly and there were no issues.
The hike itself was tough, and made even tougher by very soft snow towards the summit. It was exhausting but is the most rewarding experience. The views from the lake into the glacial valley are spectacular.
I would recommend anybody to book this trip. Be prepared to work hard. If you are booking early/late season, also be prepared for the weather and waist deep snow towards the summit.
Amazing Trip!
My group were lucky enough to be paired with Callum as our guide, who was amazing. His enthusiasm was infectious and he got all of us through the tougher moments. He did an amazing job.
The hike was the perfect amount of challenging and we finished with a huge sense of accomplishment.
Our teams only criticism is we felt the food was a little lacking and didnt reflect the price point. But this is a very minor complaint.
Fjord hiking & kayaking
Super enjoyable, a great host and great people
NA
Hiking wknd .
We came as a family beginning of April and can honestly say we had an amazing time . Our guide Benji was absolutely fantastic from start to finish . A fantastic fella with the perfect personality for the job . Very well organised trip . You won’t go hungry . And he’s always there to make people feel as comfortable as they can . Weather wasn’t great but all part of the experience we was after . Benji ( Cecil ) played a massive part in our wknd and fully recommend this 3 day trip to anyone .
Simply spectacular scenery and a very memorable experience … just be prepared for camping on a very primitive level (no showers, no toilets, nowhere dry to sit and plenty of ticks)
Highly recommended, brilliant way to explore the fjords, led by an excellent guide
Hello, it is nice activity to try.
Honestly where to begin! Such an amazing experience! The fjords are beautiful, never seen anything like it! Kayaking in them was a dream. Hike was really tough but so worth it at the end. Guide was super friendly and always accommodating. Weather is constantly changing so pack for rain but it makes it more exciting! Would love to do it again!
What a fantastic time we had! My partner and I wanted to squeeze in an adventure on limited leave left and this far exceeded our expectations. Just enough challenge to make you feel like you've achieved something but not so much that you can't enjoy it in three days. Felt like we were away for a week. Views were beautiful, the trip was amazingly well organised (it's a slick operation), food was great, the hike was a joy.
Our guide, Quiller, was just brilliant. He was highly professional, experienced and knowledgeable, and made sure everyone felt safe and encouraged. He also ensured we were very well fed and 'watered'. He had lots of interesting knowledge to impart and was just a genuinely good guy and great company.
We were the only couple in the group which was of mixed age, background and nationality. We had an absolute blast and everyone was so supportive of each other. I laughed a lot - which was a happy bonus.
If you're unsure I'd say just do it but you'll enjoy it more with a decent basic level of fitness. There's a bit of the hike that's quite a steep ascent but it's not technical and the views are always worth it. We're booking our next one asap
Thank you Much Better Adventures and Jan and Rebecca! We had a wonderful trip with a lovely group of people. The tour was incredibly well organised, so much fun, and a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Would definitely recommend to a friend.
Overall the trip fulfilled our expectations 100%. Was an absolute joy and a great experience!
Very well organised trip, Cheryl our guide was very good. The scenery was amazing! You can fit more items in the kayak as well as the dry bag supplied but they will probably get a little damp!
If you’re reading this review on the fence about booking, just DO IT! What an utterly breathtaking adventure; perfect from start to end. Superbly organised and hassle-free! Exceptional tour guides (shout out to Ollie who was ours). One of the best things I’ve ever spent money on!
Really great! Incredible views, so fun - loved it
Excellent trip, organised well and amazing view. The local guide company really know what they doing and supply lots of food and excellent hosts.
What an adventure! Anyone with reasonable fitness will manage fine with the kayaking and hike. I had zero kayaking experience but the guides are really patient and you will pick it up in no time. Whatever the weather the views of the fjords are almost too good to be true. You will not go hungry on this trip - dinner and breakfast is cooked fresh and ample snacks and lunch options are provided. Highly recommend!!
The trip was amazing - it was everything I hoped it would be and more! The fjords were absolutely stunning and the photos don't do it justice. I highly recommend this adventure, you won't regret it!
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 47kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
- A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
You really do not need any kayaking experience. Your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing at the start. You’ll just need reasonable levels of fitness to handle approx 25km of relaxed paddling over two days, a day of hiking and be up for camping out overnight.
The hike is not for beginners and is very challenging, particularly if it is or has been wet. You'll gain over a thousand meters in elevation during the hike and early in the season (April, May and occasionally early June) there can be snow on the ground (sometimes quite deep) which adds to the challenge. The same can apply late in the season too. We would only recommend this hike if you are an active person with hiking experience. It just takes a bit of time getting up the steep section but don’t worry, it’s no race to the top.
The route is about 10km each way, making a total hike of 20.7km. The elevation is sea level to 1,189m and quite steep in places. The hike is about 8 to 11 hours return, with an awesome view from the ridge at the top to the fjord below.
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
The trip will be split into groups of up to 10 people. Let us know if you are travelling with friends, and we will make sure you are in the same group as friends who have booked.
The weather in summer is generally very comfortable for kayaking and camping, with temperatures of 15-20 degrees Celsius, sometimes more. April and May typically see the lowest rainfall but days are cooler (typically 10-15 degrees Celsius) and nights usually hover a few degrees above freezing. Snow cover often persists on higher ground into April and May (and occasionally early June) and is likely to be encountered along a significant portion of the hike (your host has a stock of snowshoes if needed). We recommend joining this trip in July and August for the warmest temperatures, but it’s great all summer.
In any month it can rain and get chilly at night so waterproofs, good hiking boots, a warm jumper and some thermals are vital. This time of year daylight in Norway is constant with only 2–3 hours of darkness in the evenings.
One of the most beautiful places in the world. A fjord is a deep, narrow and elongated part of the sea, that stretches inland for miles, winding around mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs. The fjords were formed by the giant glacier tongues and shaped over several ice ages.
There are a plenty of kayaks available for you to use with a mix of single and doubles available depending on your preference.
You're free to bring any luggage or suitcase you wish with you to Voss. On day 2, you'll check out of your accommodation with all of your luggage and transfer by bus to the host's kayaking base in Gudvangen. Here, you'll be given a 22-litre dry bag to pack everything into for your kayaking, camping and hiking adventure (excluding your sleeping bag and sleeping mat, unless you bring your own). You will be given a hard waterproof case for your camera/phone too, and you'll want to keep certain things handy such as your water bottle, cap, sunscreen and snacks. You'll need to pack light as your dry bag has to fit into the hatched compartments (bulkheads) of the kayak, along with the group's food and equipment which will be shared among the kayaks. The remainder of your luggage that you don't need on the adventure can be left behind at the kayaking base in Gudvangen, where it will be safely stored until your return.
Don't stress, your host will explain all during the briefing.
Absolutely. The train is 45 minutes faster than the included transfer and is one of the most spectacular journeys you can take by rail. Here’s how:
From the airport, get the Flybussen airport shuttle to Bergen bus station, or the Bybanen (city light rail - cheaper but slower). Buses to/from the airport run every 10-15 minutes, and cost roughly 90NOK (£9) each way. The Bybanen is approx 40NOK (£4).
From the bus station it’s a few minutes walk to the train station. A taxi from the airport to train station can be booked for between 350-550NOK (£35-£55), depending on traffic.
Trains run regularly throughout the day and don’t need to be booked in advance, with a single ticket to Voss costing roughly 200NOK (£20). Trains to Oslo stop at Voss.
You can buy tickets at the ticket office up until 5.30 pm, or from ticket machines. If you want to check the timetable or book online head here.
Voss Hostel is a 12 minute walk from the station. Head out of the main station and turn right on the road. Follow the road until just before the roundabout (about 750m) then take the left turning, following the road for 200m more - straight to the hostel.
For the return, make your life easy by jumping on the already included transfers to Bergen Airport.
There should be no problem with staying back at camp during the hiking day for someone not wanting to hike. It may also be possible to just come along for the first part of the hike and then return to the camp, this does depend on where the group is actually camped as this may affect options. Alternatively, you could consider booking the Kayak and Wild Camp Norwegian Fjords trip instead.
We can recommend the following from budget to high price. There are many other hotels, however these are selected for their convenience and/or from experience:
Accommodation in Voss
- Voss Hostel - great prices for individuals, couples or large groups.
- Voss Camping Cabins - ideal for small groups of 3 to 4.
- Store Ringheim Hotel - perfect for cosy traditional rooms and great food.
Accommodation in Bergen
- Montana Hostel - great prices for individuals, couples or large groups.
- Grand Terminus Hotel - Older style but right next to the train station.
- Thon Bristol Hotel - great central city location for sightseeing and nightlife.
- First Marin Hotel - great central city location for sightseeing and nightlife.
Here’s what your local guide has to say on drones:
We do not really encourage bringing drones on this trip for several reasons:
- There are limited times where there would be possibilities for flying the drone.
- We need to keep the campsites free of drone traffic in agreement with the landowners.
- There is often livestock animals in some areas that may get affected and we need to keep a good relationship with the farmers.
- We have seen some people being frustrated by drone traffic and can understand this.
Having said this, we do not prohibit drone use as it is out of our legislation. As long as it does not interfere with the issues mentioned above and you can fit the drone in the kayak, it will be OK to bring it along. Just please do discuss the use with other group members sometime after meeting up with them on the first morning to settle this.
The best way to meet your host is to take the train from Oslo centre to Voss (not Bergen), and then head to Voss Hostel. See the FAQ how to get to Voss hostel from the airport and just follow the directions from Voss station to the hostel. The train journey takes about 6.5 hours and goes through some amazing scenery.
