Key Information
Day 1
Arrive in Kathmandu
After checking in you'll have a pre-departure meeting with your guides to run through the final plans and arrangements for the trek. You'll finish the day with a group dinner to get to know your team for the next few weeks.
Day 2
Journey to Manthali
Head out of the city by bus as you head to Manthali. This remote region is where most Lukla flights now depart from (although if you're lucky they sometimes depart from Kathmandu) and you'll spend the night in safari tents near to the small airport so you're ready to jump on the first flight in the morning.
Please note: the drive between Kathmandu and Manthali is currently taking 8-9hrs as the normal road is closed. This is expected to be the case for the remainder of 2024 and possibly beyond.
Day 3
Trek to Phakding
Hiking
Today starts with a short flight to Lukla Airport in the Everest region. After meeting the other crew members you'll start your trek, passing through the prosperous village of Lukla before reaching Phakding on the Dudh Kosi River. You'll spend the night in the village and should have time to visit some of the nearby monasteries.
Occasionally Lukla flights can be delayed or cancelled - please see the FAQs for further information.
Day 4
Namche
Hiking
Start the day with a walk through beautiful pine forests and along the track to the Dudh Koshi River. One of the (many) bridges is the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge with a particularly epic viewpoint of the gleaming Mount Thamserku (6618 m). From here you'll continue through the village of Jorsale before a challenging uphill climb to Namche Bazaar, where you'll get your first glimpse of Everest.
Day 5
Acclimatise and explore Namche (3440m)
Today will be a rest day in order to acclimatise to the altitude, but rest assured, there’ll be no time to get bored! Instead, there’s the opportunity to hike to a nearby viewpoint and enjoy mammoth vistas of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Lhotse...we could go on. On the way back, you’ll walk around the Khumjung valley and have the chance to visit the Hillary School and Khunde Hospital, before heading back for the night.
Day 6
Namche to Tengboche
Hiking
Things get challenging as the trail forks northeast along a tributary valley and you approach the holy ground of Tengboche (3860m). There you’ll be met by a monastery, yak pasture and the world’s highest sacred institution combined! Team this with more epic views of Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Everest and you'll find it's worth every puff.
Day 7
Tengboche to Dingboche
Hiking
Trek past the Gompa holding the famous Yeti scalp and pass summer yak pastures on the way to Dingboche, where you'll stay for the night. Most of the trekking in this area is comparatively gentle, although taking it easy is recommended due to the high altitude.
Day 8
Explore and acclimatise at Dingboche
Today you 'll have your second acclimatisation day at Dingboche (4410m), which is vital considering the high altitudes you’re now reaching. Fear not, you can get still involved in some optional hikes to the nearby Nagajun Hill or Chukung Village which both boast panoramic views of Ama Dablam and Makalu.
Day 9
Dingboche to Lobuche
Hiking
Climb at a leisurely pace and cross ice covered torrents until you reach Lobuche (4910m). Here, you’ll be met with stone houses that sit amongst the frozen wilderness. Only one more night until your goal.
Day 10
Everest Base Camp
Hiking
Ascend to Everest Base Camp (5380m). Congratulations, you're in the company of legends. Take some time to reflect and enjoy it. Many a new profile picture has been taken here! Once you’ve taken in the views and given yourself a massive high-five, you'll continue back to Gorak Shep (5364m) for the night before beginning the descent tomorrow.
Day 11
Pangboche via Kala Patthar
Hiking
The best way to see Everest (and its surrounding peaks) is as the sun comes up so be prepared for an early start. You'll ascend to Kala Patthar (5550m), the highest point of the trip, with awesome views of Everest before heading down to Pangboche for the night.
Day 12
Pangboche to Namche
Hiking
Descend down to Phungi Thanga and then continue on to Namche, where you'll stay for a night of celebrations.
Day 13
Lukla
Hiking
Set off for the final descent into Lukla (2860m). On the way, you'll trek through a forest of rhododendrons and pine until you reach a Sherpa village. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to say your final goodbyes to the local team before moving on to Lukla.
Day 14
Back to Kathmandu
Fly back to Ramechhap after your incredible mountain journey. You'll drive back to Kathmandu in time for some well-earned beers and a celebration dinner.
Day 15
Last day in Kathmandu
Enjoy a well-earned lie in and breakfast at your hotel, then spend your last day exploring the city before heading back to the airport, and reality.

What is the food like?
Breakfast is usually either hot porridge, muesli or Tibetan bread served with an omelette or boiled eggs. The menus in the teahouses are very similar at every stop and there will usually be a choice of traditional Nepalese dhal bhat (a mixed plate of lentils, rice, vegetables and pickles - delicious and healthy), Nepalese dumplings (momo’s), mixed noodles, pasta and even pizza. Although meat is available at some teahouses, we suggest you ask your guide for advice about consumption as it tends to depend on how far it has travelled as to whether it is a safe option.
Dairy-free, vegan or vegetarian diets can be catered for while trekking although meals may get a bit repetitive - dhal bhat will likely be your go-to staple. Gluten-free/coeliac diets are tricky to cater for on teahouse treks (beware that powdered soups and seasonings used often contain gluten, and cooking oil is commonly reused and may cause cross-contamination). Please explain your dietary requirements to your guide so that they can assist when ordering, and bringing along some extra food/snacks is advisable.
What is the accommodation like?
In Kathmandu
You’ll stay in a centrally located tourist hotel in the heart of Thamel, close to the main shopping area and heritage sites.
In Manthali
For your night in Manthali, you will stay in safari-style tents at the Freedom Resort Fixed Tent Camp. The permanent tents are comfortably set with wooden floors and you will share on a twin-basis with shared bathrooms. There is a swimming pool, restaurant and bar on site.
On the trek
Generally, most adventures to Nepal are in remote areas where the accommodation will be basic. On the trek you will stay in 'teahouses' – mountain lodges that tend to have a communal dining area and basic toilets.
The rooms are sorted by gender – however, if there is an odd number in the group they may occasionally be mixed. There’s no heating, so you'll need your warm sleeping bag. WiFi and hot showers are often available at a small cost. You can usually charge your phone up, again, you guessed it, for a cost. So remember to take an adapter.
Upgrades
For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for the two nights in Kathmandu only, subject to availability. This option is not available in the teahouses. Please request this at the time of booking: see Optional Extras below for prices.
This trip has been rated as Challenging
Much of the trek is within the capabilities of people with a good fitness who are keen trekkers. Still, it is important to note that trekking at altitudes above 3000m/10,000ft is more demanding on the body than walking at low elevations. Some training beforehand will help and we advise doing at least one weekend of back to back days walking. The guide will set the pace and as with all altitude treks, the theme is ‘slowly slowly’ to help you adjust to the altitude.
What will I need to carry?
This trip includes one porter for every two trekkers. They will carry up to 20-25kg of kit so your overnight bags and spare clothes will be transported for you (maximum 12kg per person). You will only need to carry a ‘day pack’ with essentials in (extra layer, snacks, water, suncream, camera etc.
There are 3 different seasons for trekking in Nepal:
Winter (Dec-Feb): Despite being seen as ‘off-season’ this is often the best time to trek in Nepal. The nights can be very cold (down to minus 20°c) but the trails are quieter and the mountain views are often at their best due to the clear sunny skies.
Pre-Monsoon / Spring (March-May): Temperatures rise significantly in Spring and flowers are in full bloom in the lower lands. Although it can still drop below freezing at night, the daytime temperatures tend to sit between 10-15°c.
Post-Monsoon / Autumn (Sept-Nov): This is the most popular time to trek in Nepal with sunny and mild days generally. It can get cold and windy at higher altitudes however skies are usually clear.
Of course, mountain weather is notoriously hard to predict and snow can be expected on any trip so come prepared.
Once in a lifetime trek
Incredible views once we get into the mountains. The first site of Everest is incredible. Reaching basecamp was an incredible feeling, full of adrenaline!
What an adventure!!
An amazing trip. A trip of a lifetime led by Dinesh and his team. Their guidance each and every day was brilliant, with every team member feeling safe under their care. They gelled with each team member which added to the experience. I left Nepal having met and made lifetime friends with an amazing team of people. Oh, and seeing Everest was just the cherry on top of the cake!!
A trip of lifetime memories, I finished so satisfied and inspired
If you are on the fence, please DO SIGN UP. It is a trip of a lifetime. For several days, I was being surrounded by nothing but breathtaking mountain view, and kind and cheerful fellow trekkers, and incredible crew whose care, guidance, and leadership were outstanding. The tea houses were good. Each had a common area with heating chimney which was were the meals were served, as well as a center of gathering each evening. The food were hearty meals, with variety to choose from. The quantity was enough to keep me going each day (and I eat a lot when I am hiking). Finally, it is grueling, but I'd say not that much because of daily volume of hike, but because of the compounding tiredness over the days. I'd say any generally somewhat fit person could consider completing this trek. For what it matters, at least half of me is on the introverted side, and I still find it pleasant and enjoyable to be surrounded by the trip people for 2 weeks!
“Throughout we were lucky to
“Throughout we were lucky to be guided by Dinesh BJ and the crew -very experienced, knowledgeable and supportive guides. I loved the family vibe we had as a crew and this really helped us when the hiking got tougher at higher altitude. The views were breathtaking. ” Tipping guidelines need to be made clearer on the MBA site as to how the money gets spilt as this would help with budget otherwise ☆☆☆☆☆
The trip of a lifetime!
I went on the EBC Trek with MBA at the end of November 2024 and WOW, what can I say - it was an unforgettable adventure!
The breathtaking Himalayan views, well-organised itinerary, and knowledgeable guides made the journey both challenging and rewarding. I want to thank our guides and porters from the bottom of my heart. They truly made the experience for me. Dinesh was our main leader and guide. Dinesh was absolutely brilliant in every way. He made sure we were having a great time yet he always put our health as the main priority. Dinesh is very experienced and I felt safe knowing that Dinesh was making the right decision. I also want to thank Bijaya, Uttar and Suresh who were with us the whole way- these guys were amazing and we had such fun with them. They will make excellent main guides in the future.
From the trek, to the teahouses to the camaraderie of fellow trekkers, every moment was special. I made friends for a lifetime in the group. I Highly recommend this trek for anyone seeking an adventure of a lifetime!
The Dream
Truly the most epic, once in a lifetime trip. Firstly, the trip is incredibly well led and organised. Our main guide Dinesh was world-class, he was very transparent with managing expectations, preparing us for every condition, and most importantly, looking after our safety. Our support team of BJ, Utu, and Suresh, and the porters were also fantastic and great fun.
The altitude, winter cold, and some tough slopes were definitely challenging, but Dinesh prepared us well for it. However, the rewarding scenery and culture made it well worth it, it was the most beautiful place on the planet for me.
For me the heart of the trip was the group bonding, we were all quite different people but became like family during the trip. So many laughs, fun, and pushing and supporting each other on the trek.
I was on the fence for booking this trip, but it was one of the best decisions I've made and urge you to stop hesitating and go for it.
My main advice is because you travelling to one of the most extreme conditions on the planet, don't go cheap on the gear (I had to buy some proper winter trek trousers and fleece in Namche), expect to be challenged (altitude does not discriminate no matter how fit you are), and prepare financially, since for example, we had to take a helicopter from Lukla to Kathmandu due to airport closures due to the weather to make it back in time for our home flights.
MBA Everest Base Camp.
Absolutely loved it. The guides and porters where fantastic - Kevin, Tenji and Benja. They made the trip for me.
Absolutely incredible experience!
This trip exceeded expectations!
Our lead guide, Kevin Rai and assistant guides Benjamin Rai and Tashi Tenzing Sherpa were incredible! They made me feel safe, helped me when i struggled, they are caring and kind, were such a joy to be around - they went above and beyond for us as a group, (they even brought up a cake up to EBC to celebrate a birthday of someone in our group!) They enhanced my experience by a milestone and are a credit to Much Better Adventures and Freedom Adventures!
The trip was unforgettable, the views were like no other and although tough at times, it was really a trip i will never ever forget and 100% reccomend!
The supporting staff (porters) were also absolutely amazing, it's incredible what they did for us and we couldn't have done it without them! Ashish Rai, Hamosh Rai, Budha Tanang and Narendra Rai.
Beautiful scenery and amazing guides!
The whole trip was such an adventure from start to finish! From flying into Lukla, trekking into multiple mountain villages, yaks!, and getting to know a lovely group of people! I feel so lucky to have spent two weeks in the Himalayas with amazing views everywhere I looked! Massive thanks to our guides who made this trip amazing! Dinesh, Sebika, Lakba, Nabin and all the support staff made everything feel fun and relaxed right from the start - I have so much respect for what these guys do and can’t recommend them enough! Even when I had a few days feeling unwell I was supported and looked after by Dinesh and Sebika who ensured I still had an incredible journey.
Everest Base Camp Nov '24
This trip was the most incredible trip of my life! Everything was organised so well and someone always replied within a few days to any queries I had prior to the trip. Dinesh, our team lead, was amazing! He was kind, friendly, professional and went above and beyond to make sure we all had an amazing trip. He really cared about all of us and monitored our health everyday. Getting to Everest Base Camp has been a dream of mine for so long and I feel so grateful to Dinesh, Lakpa, Nabin, Sabika and all of the guides and sherpas for making this dream to come true! ❤
Everest mountain was wonderful
The Everest trek is a journey through mountainous rock climbs and Nepalese meals.
Our guides made sure our group was medically fit to continue when the route becomes high altitude. Their combined knowledge of local routes and experience in high altitude climbs was reassuring. Our main guide Kevin has a passion for mountainous terrain and it was genuinely inspiring. If you get guide Benjamin he has a really interesting magical card trick and Tenji is a master at uno!
So grateful for the challenge, scenery and pals
Trek to Everest Base Camp
After a dodgy start with the fear of bad weather not getting out to Lukla, we eventually arrived to start our epic trip of a lifetime - EBC! The organisation was excellent, augmented by our fantastic guide - Kevin Rai and his sherpas Benjamin Rai & Tasha Tenzing (Tenji) We had a lot of ground to make up with a day lost so 15 miles from Lukla pushing through Phakding was tough! The guides looked after us from start to finish and genuinely care for us and wanted us to reach EBC - we did! Our group of 8 people is about right - no more! Cannot fault the heli media vac either, extremely well organised!!
Everest Base Camp
This trip was the most amazing experience. It was probably one of the hardest trips I’ve ever done for lots of reasons. The guide Dinesh was epic, him And his team of support guides Utr and Suresh and the 3 porters went above and beyond, nothing was too much trouble. Dinesh long experience of this landscape was priceless, letting us know what to expect, what to avoid and how to get the most out of the experience. It is a trip I will never forget, just make sure you do lots and lots of preparation before you go, this is not for the faint hearted.
An amazing trip from start
An amazing trip from start to finish. Alot harder than I expected but dinnesh robin etc were amazing. Highly recommend 👌
Unforgettable trek with guides Pujan & Mingma
Our EBC trek with Pujan and Mingma surpassed expectations in every way - I’d almost say the trip of a lifetime if I wasn’t already scheming my next adventure in Sagarmatha National Park!
From our first day, Pujan’s service was excellent; always sharing information clearly with a cheeky smile to boot. His energy was infectious as we navigated a long and bumpy van ride to Ramechhap to get our flight to Lukla. Once within the Himalayan region we met with our kind Assistant Leader Mingma and two resilient porters Ras and Gyan, whose support was unparalleled throughout the journey.
Traversing ravines, turquoise rivers and scrubby rock hills up into the National Park we were blessed with astounding views from day one. Our small group made the dynamic even better, and I’m beyond pleased to leave the trip with close friends for life.
Without Pujan’s extensive experience and Mingma’s caring presence and determination I’m certain our journey wouldn’t have been the same. Much Better Adventures made the booking process seamless and the host company Freedom Adventures were on hand to assist us every step from arrival in Kathmandu to departure.
If you’ve been dreaming about ticking the EBC off your hiking bucket list - do it. The sense of reward coupled with incredible culture, food and people makes for an unforgettable experience.
A very well organised trip with a lovely group of people
The walk to base camp is a tiring trip and with altitude at play requires really good leadership and organisation. I cannot fault these qualities in the trip.
Dinesh and Freedom Adventures (the operators on the ground) use all of their experience to ensure that we are safe. High altitude can be a serious business. I struggled with it. Dinesh and the guides did all they could to ensure that we were looked after.
I loved the group of people I was with. There was a perfect mix of different ages and genders. It was fantastic.
This mixed with our surroundings and the local people made for a first rate trip.
The trip of a lifetime
Words cannot describe how amazing this trip is. We got very lucky with the weather, so had views out of this world. Our guides Kevin, Mingma and Nobbin could not have been more helpful, supportive and knowledgable. Going above and beyond at all times to make the trip unforgettable.
Make sure you follow the kit list. I did and didn’t need anything extra. The food and tea houses were basic but great and fun to socialise with other trekkers.
I did it as a solo traveller and could not have felt less alone while travelling. What a team we had! (And pretty good WiFi at times)
I cannot thank MBE and the Freedom team who run the trip more for such a life changing experience!!!
This is my 3rd time using the company and they again have delivered!
Thank you so much!
Breathtaking and Unforgettable- The Trip of All Trips.
I have recently returned from my Everest Base Camp Trek with Much Better Adventures and Freedom Adventures in Nepal and I'm only just coming back to reality. From the beginning MBA and local host Freedom Adventures were amazing in answering any questions about the trip from packing to visas and everything in between, their communication was great and really fast in coming back with answers. The organisation of the trip was spot on from the beginning from our first meeting in Kathmandu with guide Dinesh. He gave us a great run down of what to expect and gave realistic updates about any changes in our travel plans/times etc which was really appreciated. We had some issues with local flights to Lukla due to weather (something completely outwith the control of the guides) and Dinesh acted incredibly quickly and efficiently to ensure we had a backup plan sorted which didn't impact our trip, the entire group was so thankful to him for that and it meant that our trip wasn't impacted at all.
The trek itself was an experience I will never forget. Each day presented something different in terms of the physical challenge, landscape and terrain. Every corner we turned took my breath away with the drama and beauty of the scenery. Dinesh and his team were so supportive and led the group brilliantly, ensuring everyone was catered for regardless of pace or fitness, it always felt like one group achieving the goal together. The team were also so generous with their knowledge of the mountains, customs and shared so much of their beautiful country and history with us- it added so much to my time on the trek.
The trek was definitely not for the faint of heart but I feel that the company prepared us well for what to expect and I felt completely safe and supported by the guides. The facilities along the way were above what I expected and were always clean and comfortable. Food was good and always plenty of choice.
Reaching Everest Base Camp will forever be a highlight of my life, the sense of achievement was incredible and the days getting there, trekking through the most stunning scenery gave me some of the most peaceful and contented days I can remember. I only wish there was a guide on how to come back to earth after 2 weeks in Mountain Paradise!
The group became true friends and really did feel like a family, which made the whole thing even more special.
I couldn't reccommend the trip and MBA/Freedom Adventures Highly enough.
It would not have been what it was without our amazing team of Dinesh, Sebika, Suresh, Rabin and their support team of amazing guys.
Already looking for my next adventure!
Fantastic highly reccomended.
Nepal what a fantastic country the people the views all perfect. Massive thanks to Dinesh and his team they really made the trip for me. Would highly recommend
Incredible experience
A real trip of a lifetime, the trekking and scenery are amazing and not something to be forgotten. Would highly recommend!
Thanks to Pujan, Tashi and the rest of the team as well for helping make this trip as good as it was. Their expertise and experience was invaluable!
The trip of a lifetime!
This trip exceeded all of my expectations. The local hosts made sure everything ran exceptionally smoothly, and our guides Dinesh, Sebika, Rabin and Suresh could not have done more to make sure we left having had the trip of a life time. We arrived just two weeks after the Kathmandu valley had experienced catastrophic flash flooding that had washed away many of the roads and destroyed many buildings (as well as causing loss of life) in the region, and the local host made sure we still able to keep to our itinerary. We were then unfortunately hit with poor weather on the day we were due to fly from Manthali to Lukla. Quick decision making and communication by our lead guide, who was very experienced and had been guiding the route for 18 years, meant our group were on the first helicopters out of Manthali that day - this proved to be a great decision and organisation by the local host as it allowed us to complete our trip with only minor changes to day 2 of the trek to catch up, and were able to keep all the acclimatization days. Flights ended up being cancelled for a few days, so had they not been so prompt in organising, our whole trip would have been in jeopardy (as it was for many other groups with other companies).
The trek terrain itself is challenging, particularly a glacier crossing up to Gorak Shep, but achievable for most people with a good level of fitness. Our guides were excellent at keeping everyone going and navigating the tricky parts, monitoring for altitude sickness, giving advice on gear needed for each day, and what to expect on the trail (normally a cheeky uphill!), and paced us well given the altitude. All of our group of 12 successfully made it to EBC.
The scenery and views are some of the best you will ever see - and will exceed anything you’ve seen in photos! If you can manage it, I highly recommend the early morning trek up Kallapathar - seeing the Everest mountain range against the stars, lit up by only moonlight reflecting off the snow, is a memory I will treasure forever.
I joined the group on my own, and it was my first experience of doing so. I've had such a positive experience of group travel and know I wouldn't have wanted to do my EBC trek any other way - we had so many laughs together! I'm already looking at more group trips! Don't think, just book it!
A truly incredible experience
This was my first solo trip of this kind and I couldn't have chosen a better company to do this with! Both Much Better Adventures and Freedom Adventures (the local company) have been flawless from start to finish. Everything was organised to the very last detail and ran like clockwork, communication and the attention to detail were there at every step. Our guides Dinesh, Sebika, Rabin and Suresh have been amazing throughout and have gone over and beyond to offer us an unforgetable experience. They were attentive, kind, funny, knowledgeable, always putting our safety first and catering even to the neediest of our requests. Although conditions were expected to be basic, all along the trek it felt that we had been given the best choices of what was available, so it always made for a nice surprise. The trek itself is challenging, but incredibly beautiful, and again, the guides are there to support you at every step. I cannot fault the company or the experience, so I would say if you are thinking of booking, DO IT!!
Honeymoon with a difference
An amazing trip from start to finish. This has been my 3rd trip with MBA and I wouldn't book with any other adventure group. The trip leader Dinesh, 2IC Sebika, Support crew Suresh & Rabin were all amazing and nothing was to much effort. So well organised and the whole team were very approachable, friendly, so helpful and just really great people. The local knowledge (which they passed on) was interesting and not too much
Unbelievable experience, 10/10.
This was a very well planned and organised trip by much better adventures x freedom adventures. We were looked after by Kevin (lead guide), Mingmi and Nabin (assistant guides). They put a lot of effort into looking after us especially at such high altitudes and I couldn't have asked for a better team. The walk itself was excellent. Definitely challenging at points - the hill on the second day almost took us all out but the theme of 'slowly, slowly' is the way forward. The views were incredible as we got super lucky with the weather throughout the whole trip. I opted to do the optional hike up kala patthar and I would recommend this to everyone. Watching the sunset over the Himalayas/specifically Everest was the highlight of my trip. The teahouses were better than I was expecting - the beds were comfy although expect bugs. Wifi was pretty good at every one, some better than others. I also got a simcard when I arrived and I would recommend doing this as I was able to get data up until Namche Bazaar - enough to phone home a few times. Food was basic, again some places were better than others - lots of potatoes and eggs. Flights from Lukla were cancelled so we ended up with an extra night there and having to helicopter out the next morning for £300/$400. We were prepared for this by both companies so it wasn't unexpected but it is necessary to plan for this in your budget. Overall, it was an amazing trip, the views were incredible and I can't believe it is over.
Incredible experience
What an absolutely amazing hiking experience. If you want an adventure this is it, from the amazing food and culture of kathmandu to the epic scenery of the everest region mountains, this trip will stun you! The guides are fantastic and friendly and will help make this a trip of a lifetime.
A truly unforgettable trip
Where do I even begin. This trip had been on my bucket list for a long long time and it certainly lived up to expectation and beyond.
Freedom adventures are the local host company that cover the organisation for your trip while in Nepal. I can not fault them on anything. The communication is fantastic and they go above and beyond to ensure your expectations are met at all times
A very special shoutout to our treck leader Pujan, his knowledge and passion for the mountains is inspiring.
Pujan went above and beyond at all times to ensure the team’s safety, happiness and wellbeing. Having such an amazing trecking leader like pujan certainly made the trip… let’s not forget the assistant guide Tashi ( Tenzing Sherpa) who did an incredible job of ensuring we were comfortable at all times. Thankyou both for an incredible trip.
The trip was a beautiful way to see Nepal for its beauty, culture and of course its mountains.
I can’t recommend this trip high enough, it truly was a trip of a lifetime and we had such beautiful weather for base camp day.
I will never ever forget this amazing experience.
EBC Trek.
What an incredible adventure to EBC. This started off in a frustrating manner as we were delayed 2 days trying to fly to Lukla, not helped by the recent flooding in Kathmandu.
However our amazing trek leader Birdhoj went above an beyond to reorganise our trek so we could fit in as much of the original itinerary as possible and ultimately complete our goal of reaching EBC.
I cannot compliment our 3 guides enough on the suport they gave us during our adventure.. Birdhoj Tamang Sebika Rai Pemba Rinji Sherpa
And also our porters.. Akash Tamang Prashant Tamang Laxmi kumar Tamang Dhane Tamang
From helping us physically, and mentally through a tough trek, they were also there to guide and advise us in every aspect of our journey. They're constant positivity helped out when the going got tough.
I would highly recommend booking with MBA, and Freedom Adventures for your future Adventures.
An Incredible Trip
The greatest adventure I've ever had. Our trek was absolutely brilliant. Not just the scenery and excitement of our every day, but the meticulous care in which we were placed in the hands of our guides Sunil Parivar, Dinesh KC, Lhakpa Tamana and Naima nuru Sherpa. (Plus our UNBELIEVABLE iron men carrying all our bags!) We didn't need to worry or think about anything, everything was taken care of, all we had to do was walk, and enjoy ourselves. I will choose Much Better Adventures for my future trips as I know now however unfamiliar of difficult it might get, the level of professionalism and attention to our wellbeing will be as outstanding as it was on this trip.
What an experience!!
Absolutely most amazing experience of my life.. the whole adventure from start to end was just incredible! The guides Sunil, Nima, Dinesh and Lakpah made the trip. They were funny, competent, knowledgeable and put our safety first! Couldn't fault any of them. Thankyou for the trip of a lifetime! Can't wait to return to Nepal!

Travel to and from the trip
Our trips do not include flights, trains or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.
Meals
We do not include meals on the trekking part of this trip, as from experience we know that altitude and physical exercise can mean appetites vary hugely.
The cost of food rises as you ascend as it is all carried in by porters and yaks and as you get higher up, very little food can be grown. How much you spend per day will vary according to your choice of meal but generally, people spend between $25-$35 per person, per day on meals and hot drinks. Below is an approximate breakdown of some items:
- Dal baht: $4 to $7
- Chow mein: $2 to $4
- Eggs: $2 to $4
- Toast: $1.50 to $3
- Tea/hot chocolate: $1 to $3
- Chocolate bars: $2 to $4
Teahouses will provide cold water free of charge; however, it needs to be treated to enable you to drink it. Please read the FAQ below regarding our advice here.
Miscellaneous costs
Other extra costs at the teahouses to be considered are:
- Shower: $2-$4
- WiFi: $2-5
- Electricity: $2-5
See the below FAQ 'What’s Plan B in case of Lukla flight cancellations?' also.
Tips
It is customary in Nepal to tip guides and porters. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. You can give any tips to your lead guide at the end of your trip. This will then be shared amongst the whole team. For full transparency, the lead guide will distribute the tips to the guides and porters in your presence. It is customary for the guides to receive a higher share than the porters as they are more highly qualified.
A good rule of thumb is around $140pp as a tip, although the amount you give is entirely your choice.
If you would like to give an additional tip to a member of the team who has supported you personally, please do so directly and discretely.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures and you are required to provide your policy information before departing. Your insurance should include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment and the specific activities involved on your adventure. We also strongly recommend it includes cancellation and curtailment insurance, should you be unable to join your trip for specific reasons such as illness. Our recommended travel insurance provider is Campbell Irvine, as their insurance offers all of the above.
Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover to the maximum altitude visited on this trip (5550m) as well as for emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.
Visas
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.
Personal Expenses
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.

Weight Restrictions
There is a weight restriction on the flight to and from Lukla of 10kg checked baggage plus 5kg hand luggage. It is not a problem for you to check in 1-2kg more than this as long as you are happy to pay an excess luggage charge (approx. £1 per kg). Some items may be left in the hotel in Kathmandu if necessary.
Please remove all unnecessary packing before you leave home and ensure you take all plastic off the mountain to be disposed of in Kathmandu.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 499kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
- A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
All of our trips to Nepal are currently running without any disruption. More information can be read here.
A mountain flight to Lukla is included on Day 3 of this tour, and back from Lukla on Day 14. Although we schedule departure dates outside of the main monsoon season, weather conditions in any mountain region can be unpredictable. It is not uncommon for flights to and from Lukla to be delayed or cancelled during the trekking season. If your flight to Lukla is cancelled then your host will revert to 'Plan B', as follows:
You will spend an extra night in Kathmandu or Manthali and attempt to fly the next day. If you reach Lukla on Day 4, you will skip a night in Namche Bazaar but otherwise follow the normal itinerary.
Alternatively, it may be possible to fly part-way (to Phaplu), then drive on a dirt road to Kharikhola (6-7 hrs drive), and begin trekking from there. In this case, it is still possible to reach Everest Base Camp in the remaining timeframe by skipping a night in Namche Bazaar. This option is available on Day 3 or Day 4.
There is one further option in the event of flight cancellations to Lukla: to try to charter helicopters for the group (subject to availability). Helicopters are less hindered by poor conditions and can often fly when planes cannot. Anyone taking this option will need to pay roughly $350-500 (USD) extra, per person (the full helicopter cost is more than this, but your cancelled Lukla flight will be refunded and deducted from the total price).
If there are more than two consecutive days of Lukla flight cancellations and it has not been possible to reach Lukla/Kharikhola by the alternative means described above on or before Day 4, then it is no longer feasible to safely reach Everest Base Camp in the time available. Your host will offer an alternative trek in a different region. Usually, the alternative trek offered is the Annapurna Circuit Trek from Chame to Jomsom (via the Thorong La Pass).
Please note that if you spend extra nights in Kathmandu as a result of Lukla flight cancellations, your host will ask you to pay the difference (of around $45 (USD) per room, per night) as the hotel in Kathmandu is more expensive than glamping in Manthali or a night in a teahouse.

The preferred currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Whilst ATMs are available in the main cities, please do not rely on them as they are often out of order and most have a maximum withdrawal limit equivalent to about GBP300.
It's best to bring the bulk of your money with you in cash and exchange it at a bank or at one of the many money changers in Nepal - your guide will help you with this. Most major currencies are accepted, including GBP (Sterling), Euros and US Dollars, however Scottish or Irish currency cannot be changed. Keep your exchange receipts in case you want to change any unused Rupees back into hard currency when you leave Nepal (it is illegal to export Nepalese Rupees as it is a closed currency).
You will need to carry a fairly large amount of cash while trekking for the meals. We advise that you keep this in a waterproof bag and in your day bag along with your passport.
We work with some of the best leaders in the industry. Every single one of them is government licensed and very experienced. In order to ensure the guides high standard of performance, the host provides them with top-notch in-house training that covers, Leave No Trace (LNT) principles, advanced wilderness first aid, hyperbaric chambers, oxygen system, mountain rescue and incident management.
The flight from Lukla to Kathmandu at the end of the trip is usually reliable however if the weather is poor cancellations can happen and there is the chance that you will have to fly the next day. So to play it safe we advise you consider booking an extra night’s accommodation in Kathmandu at the end of the trip.
There is a weight restriction on the flight to and from Lukla of 10kg checked baggage plus 5kg hand luggage. It is not a problem for you to check in 1-2kg more than this as long as you are happy to pay an excess luggage charge (approx. £1 per kg).
We’ve sourced some great optional activities for you to do in and around Kathmandu should you wish to explore that little bit further. Please discuss these directly with your host who will be able to book them for you.
Cook Like a Local: This short cooking workshop (approx. 3 hours) teaches you how to cook popular Nepali dishes like MoMo and Dal Bhat. You’ll meet your teacher and accompany them shopping, then head to the kitchen and learn to cook alongside them. Price: Pay what you think the workshop is worth!
Shop Local: A 2/3 hour guided exploration of the markets of Kathmandu. Prepare to learn about the vendors that line the crowded narrow alleyways and to witness everything you could ever imagine being sold, haggled and bargained for. A great experience to learn about the melting pot of cultures that exist in Kathmandu. Price: $9-$50pp depending on the group size.
Master the of Arts: Patan Durbar Square is popular for its Fine Arts and this trip will explore the local factories where handicrafts are made. You’ll visit 2-3 factories and learn about traditional processes and see art being produced. Price: $14-$59pp depending on the group size.
Introduction to Shamanism: Shamanism, which is believed to heal many diseases, is not practised widely these days however this trip enables you to meet a practising Guru and learn all about this age-old tradition. You’ll visit a small house to have an introduction, followed by lunch and a drumming session where you’ll learn the importance of rhythm pattern to healing. Price: $90-$150 depending on group size.
Although most teahouses have the option to buy bottled water, we advise against it to reduce the use of plastic in the mountains (this ends up being burnt or in landfill out of sight). You will instead be provided with cold water that needs treating. There is a wide range of products available these days which are more effective than traditional purification tablets - some trekkers like to use UV handheld devices such as a Steripen but other options are available (just check the performance in freezing conditions).
This trip includes a return domestic flight to Lukla. Nepal's mountainous terrain and weather make for challenging flying conditions and sadly more incidents (including fatalities) occur here than in other countries. Since 2013 the EU has banned all Nepalese domestic airlines from flying within EU airspace in order to raise awareness of the poor safety record (although no Nepalese airlines were operating routes within the EU prior to the ban). You should be aware that flying in Nepal is an identified risk: please consider this carefully before booking. Additional information can be found on the Aviation Safety Network entry for Nepal as well as the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office travel advice for Nepal
Domestic airlines in Nepal are generally not accredited by any internationally recognised safety audit systems and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal does not operate to the same standards as those of Western nations.
What does MBA do about this?
MBA collaborates with other UK travel companies that arrange for independent air-safety auditors to visit Nepal annually to assess the local airlines. MBA then only uses the carriers that were approved as part of the most recent audit. If any concerns are subsequently raised about an approved airline between audits, we put them on hold until the auditors are satisfied that safety standards are being met.
Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover to the maximum altitude visited on this trip (5550m) as well as for emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.
This trip visits locations at or above 4500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). The likelihood of more severe conditions, such as HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) and HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema), increases at higher altitudes. Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude, by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.
