Welcome to Sri Lanka

Jetwing Beach, Negombo. Photo: Jetwing Blue

Ayubowan! Your Sri Lankan journey begins in Negombo, a vibrant coastal town just a short drive from the airport in Colombo. On arrival, meet your host for your transfer to Jetwing Blue – the ideal spot to rest and reset after your travels. This contemporary beachfront hotel has direct access to the dazzling Indian Ocean, as well as two beautiful pools and a relaxing spa. Spend the afternoon relaxing at your own pace, and later meet up with your guide and fellow travellers for a welcome briefing. If time and energy allow, enjoy a gentle stroll along Negombo’s lively beach road for a glimpse of local life.

Day 2

Into the highlands of Kandy

Driving
3.5hrs

After a relaxed breakfast, you’ll begin your journey inland with a scenic drive to the cooler highlands of Kandy. Your base for the next three nights is Simpson’s Forest, a boutique heritage-style lodge tucked among tea estates and dense forest canopies, just outside Kandy. With sweeping views, characterful rooms, and a serene hill-country setting, it’s a peaceful retreat to unwind in between daily adventures. This afternoon, stretch your legs on the lodge’s Nature Trail – a gentle 2-hour hike which starts right at the lodge. Meandering through lush evergreen forest, a spice plantation scented with cloves and pepper, and a working tea estate, you can try your hand at traditional tea plucking. Along the way, you'll spot plenty of wildflowers, butterflies, and native flora, and drink in the incredible views over forested valleys from a quiet hilltop vantage point. Dinner is not included tonight, but you'll dine a la carte at the hotel’s restaurant – it's a celebrated spot that blends Sri Lankan and international flavours, with a side of panoramic views across the surrounding misty mountains. Expect beautifully prepared, seasonal dishes – a memorable introduction to the region’s culinary richness.

Day 3

Hike through hill country & Tamil villages

Tamil trekking, Sri Lanka. Photo: Simpson's Forest Lodge
Hiking
3hrs · 6km · 150m up · 150m down

This morning, pull on your boots and set out on a guided Tamil village walk – a fascinating blend of gentle hiking and cultural immersion through the surrounding Meenawatte Estate. This 3–4 hour trail winds through tea and spice plantations, offering glimpses into daily life in Sri Lanka’s hill country. You’ll begin on a shaded trail of rolling terrain, passing clove trees, pepper vines, and tea bushes before reaching a nearby Tamil village tucked into the hills. Along the way, your local guide will share stories about the region’s agricultural traditions, Tamil heritage, and the rhythms of rural life. While the route includes some gentle climbs and descents, the pace is leisurely to allow you to soak in the views. Back at Simpson’s Forest, you can spend the afternoon unwinding – perhaps with a dip in the pool, a drink on the terrace, or a stroll through the lodge’s peaceful gardens. For those keen to see a little more, you may choose to join your guide for an optional visit to Kandy’s city centre (around 45 minutes away). Explore its heritage charm and lakeside setting, browse local shops and markets, or pay an optional visit to the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka, said to house a tooth of the Buddha himself.

Day 4

Hike at the foothills of the Knuckles Range

Hiking
4hrs · 10km · 75m up · 470m down
Driving
3hrs

After breakfast, you’ll set off for your next hike – into the foothills of the Knuckles Mountain Range. Your day begins with a scenic one-hour drive from Simpson’s Forest Lodge, followed by a 30-minute tuk tuk ride through winding hill roads to reach the trailhead. The trail leads you deep into remote, rural Sri Lanka, through pine forests, across tea and spice plantations, and along jungle paths beside streams and rushing waterfalls. Then, the landscape shifts, and you'll walk among the rhythms of village life, with farmers tending rice paddies, water buffalo grazing, and children walking home from school. Along the way, you’ll stop at a local home, where you'll be warmly welcomed. Help prepare a traditional lunch over open fire, and share a simple but delicious meal with your hosts, perhaps with a bite of fresh fruit from the garden. Return to the lodge in the afternoon with time to unwind; take a swim in the pool, a quiet drink on the veranda, or simply soak up the views. Today is your final night in Kandy, as tomorrow you’ll set off early for one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic rail journeys through the highlands.

Day 5

Take the train to Ella and chill in the tea hills

Kandy to Ella train, sri lanka. Photo: shutterstock 1850945113
Train Ride
5-7hrs

After breakfast, you’ll head to Kandy and hop aboard one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic train rides – the laid-back, scenic journey to Ella. Sit back, relax, and watch as the lush landscapes roll by. As you pull into the station at Ella, you’ll continue by road to your base for the next two nights: Anasa Wellness, a chilled hilltop retreat tucked away in the misty forests above Bandarawela. Anasa embraces minimalist design and natural textures – think polished concrete, local stone, and warm timber – and its rooms have large windows and private terraces that open onto sweeping mountain views. The spa and pool make it easy to switch into R&R mode. This evening, you can choose to dine a la carte at Anasa's restaurant, where bold Sri Lankan flavours meet tasty, seasonal ingredients, many sourced from the surrounding gardens.

Temporary suspension of train ride The railway between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya was damaged during Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025 and remains closed until further notice. Local authorities expect repairs to take several months, and services may not resume until late 2026 or beyond. Until further notice, you’ll travel from Kandy to Ambewela via Nuwara Eliya by private vehicle (3-4 hours) instead. Then, from Ambewela to Ella, you'll take the train (this is the most scenic portion of the route).

Day 6

Yoga and a sunset trail to Little Adam’s Peak

Yoga

Hiking
2-3hrs · 5km · 200m up · 200m down

Enjoy a slow morning at your boutique retreat, beginning your day with a rejuvenating yoga session (optional), then tucking into a tasty breakfast. Bask in the mountain views from the pool, unwind at the spa, or simply relax on your balcony surrounded by birdsong and forest – the quiet luxury of Anasa makes it a perfect base to relax before heading back out to explore. In the afternoon, you’ll head to the charming highland town of Ella, known for its lush scenery and laid-back vibe. Stop in at the Nine Arch Bridge, an iconic feat of colonial-era railway architecture, where you might glimpse a train chugging its way through along arches – a picture-perfect moment. Then it’s on to Little Adam’s Peak, one of the region’s most popular short hikes. The trail begins just outside Ella town, with a gradual incline through tea plantations and small villages. It typically takes about 45–60 minutes to reach the summit, which sits at an elevation of around 1100 m. The effort is well worth it: at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Ella Gap, the surrounding mountains, and the far-reaching southern plains – especially striking at sunset, when the sky turns gold and pink. After your descent, enjoy a free evening in Ella, where you can explore the town’s vibrant cafe scene or try one of the local restaurants for dinner. Later, you’ll return to Anasa for a restful night.

Day 7

Into the wild: safari & luxury camping in Yala

Wildlife Tracking
2-3hrs

After breakfast, you’ll leave the highlands behind and make your way to the wild southeastern plains of Yala National Park. Tonight’s home? Your Standout Stay, Ceylon Wild Safaris – a tucked-away jungle camp with just six safari-style tents, each with its own deck, plunge pool, and outdoor shower. It’s the perfect mix of off-the-grid adventure and laid-back luxury. In the afternoon, hop in your private jeep and head out into Yala Block 5 – a quieter corner of the park known for epic wildlife encounters without the crowds. With your expert naturalist guide leading the way, keep your eyes peeled for elephants, sloth bears, crocs, vibrant birdlife – and if you're lucky, a glimpse of the elusive leopard. As the sun sets, return to camp for a relaxed evening under the stars – where a surprise awaits for a special way to round off your day in the wild. Then drift off to sleep in your tent, with the sounds of the jungle all around.

Rise early for a final bush walk with your naturalist guide – a exploring Yala’s wilderness quietly and on foot, spotting animal tracks, birds, and learning how to read the land. After breakfast, begin your journey south to the coast. En route, enjoy an authentic Sri Lanka buffet before stopping at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, a government-run conservation centre that rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves and prepares them for life back in the wild. Unlike many elephant attractions in Sri Lanka, this centre prioritises ethical care – touching the elephants is not permitted, nor are performances. You will observe the young elephants from a distance during their scheduled feeding, keeping human contact to a minimum to ensure a smooth reintegration into their natural habitat. Next, make a short detour to Mulkirigala Rock Temple. Often overlooked, you'll climb a series of stone staircases to reach hidden cave shrines, centuries-old frescoes, and large reclining Buddha statues. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the surrounding jungle and southern plains. In the late afternoon, you'll arrive at Ananya Beach Hotel, your base for the next three nights. This serene hideaway sits on a quiet beach near Tangalle, and our evening is free to unwind – swim in the pool, stroll along the shore, or relax as the sun sinks into the Indian Ocean.

Day 9

Free time in paradise and sunset kayaking

As the day mellows, slip into a kayak and paddle out onto the calm waters of a nearby lagoon. Led by a local guide, paddle silently through golden reflections and tangled mangroves. Watch for flashes of colour as kingfishers dart by, spot monkeys along the banks, and soak in the quiet magic of dusk settling over the water. It’s a serene way to wind down a day spent by the sea.

What is the food like?

Sri Lankan prawn curry. Photo: Shutterstock-2181580227

Sri Lankan cuisine is a fascinating reflection of the island’s heritage: fresh local produce fused with spices brought to the island over the centuries. Though Sri Lankan food has some similarities with South Indian cuisine, it remains distinctively unique. Contrasting flavours of coconut, chilli, curry leaves, cinnamon, and garlic dominate the main dishes, as well as a variety of deep-fried tasty snacks. ‘Rice and curry’ is the Sri Lankan staple, which in reality means a huge variety of curries, dhal, and vegetable dishes, often served with roti-style flatbreads. There is also an abundance of fresh seafood and fish, usually cooked in curries with coconut and fresh herbs. Many hotel restaurants on this trip elevate traditional flavours with gourmet twists and thoughtfully curated a la carte menus, allowing you to pick your favourite dishes when meals are not included. Picnic lunches will be simple yet full of flavour, offering fresh, wholesome ingredients that reflect the local palate – perfect for enjoying the scenery without fuss.

Vegetarians, vegans, and most dietary requirements are well catered for; just speak to your host upon booking.

This trip is scheduled to run between December and July: generally, favourable times to explore Sri Lanka's central highlands, Yala National Park, and south coast.

The months of February to April typically offer dry, sunny conditions across all regions. May and June fall within the southwest monsoon season, which can bring occasional rain, especially in the highlands and along the coast – but these are often short-lived showers rather than all-day downpours. Yala and the southeast are usually drier, even at this time of year. December marks the start of the dry season again and is a popular time to visit.

Expect warm coastal temperatures of 25–30°C and cooler conditions in the highlands (around 15–20°C). As Sri Lanka’s weather patterns have become less predictable in recent years, it’s best to be prepared for a bit of everything – sunshine, humidity, and possibly the odd tropical downpour. Lightweight waterproofs are strongly recommended.

Tour of my life - book pronto ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’m well travelled and have lived on three continents - I was blown away by this tour.

MBA knocked it out the park with their selection of local partner. Our guide Ramesh, his colleagues onboard( Chataranga and Angela) along with Ruwi behind the scenes made this the joyful adventure of a lifetime.

Personal touches meant the world to me:

  1. I lost things, possibly because we were so well supported I fully relaxed. After the trip had finished I realised I’d left a special piece of jewellery far away in the centre of SL. The team mobilised and got it back within a day and refusing to let me pay the costs. This team doesn’t just do ‘customer service’, they live by a standard of ‘hospitality’ I’ve never experienced before
  2. Sri Lankan hospitality - eg on our longest, highest hike in The Knuckles , expertly supported by specialist guide Gemini and his colleagues, some of the group needed an extra bathroom break. A village family spontaneously invited all 15 of us in for tea and delicacies. I was immensely touched by their generosity and openness. What humanity. What a society.
  3. Sri Lanka is a stunning biodiversity hotspot. We trekked in 4 types of forest ( Mangrove, Tropical Dry Evergreen, Tropical Moist Evergreen and Sub Mountain) . I recorded 84 different types of birds ! It’s a bird watchers dream. It took me 3yrs to hear as many birds in Europe, as sang to us in 10 days. The team fell over themselves to help us see the very best the country has to offer- it’s very high standard. Amongst the hotels were some of the nicest 5 star experiences I’ve had the fortune to sample.
  4. The tour teamed with wildlife. The camaraderie of the group was very special and when one of our 2 jeeps had a leopard cross their path, they radioed to make sure we had a chance of tracking it. I spotted the young male and my buddy captured it with her great camera skill. We also spotted an elephant bathing and another rare risked male. Enormous crocodiles basking in the sun close to the swamp with the biggest density of crocs in Asia. So life affirming. The food overall was exceptionally good. For me, the safari glamp was magical - think aircon, his and her sinks, crisp linen, a private plunge pool with a soundtrack of water buffalo and nightjars from the deck. My roommate quickly became a friend for life :woman-with-bunny-ears-partying:

Throughout our stay we were blessed with the support of a gentle and mighty tour team. Having recently recovered from illness they made accepting help dignified and light hearted as I hiked, climbed, kayaked and ‘surfed’ 😉. They steadfastly met our every need. Seeing them in action securing us the best seats ( for photography) on the most scenic railway in the world was joyful. They clearly love their work.

I hadn’t done a solo adventure for eons ; this one was so good I’m still pinching myself I was sharp enough to book it. Don’t delay - Go !

Super Sri Lanka

We went as a couple on the this trip having no experience of Sri lanka opted for a guided tour and we were not disappointed! It offers a wonderful introduction to a lovely country. The activities take you into the highlands and tea plantations with walks through lush forest and breathtaking valleys. Meeting kind local Sri Lankan villagers along the way!

The trip has a good variety of activities including an iconic train ride to Kandy, a safari at Yala where we were lucky to see Leopard, elephants and crocodiles as well as an amazing array of tropical birds. Our itinerary also included visits to a Tamil village and the chance to experience a Hindu temple ceremony as well as a tour of an ancient Buddhist Temple. Yoga, kayaking and surfing at the beach were also available to share with your fellow travellers. The hotels we stayed in were comfortable and some offered spa facilities with plenty of time to relax. We were expertly guided by Ramesh and his team who went above and beyond to ensure we had a comfortable and enlightening stay in Sri Lanka. Thank you also to a lovely group of like minded fellow travellers!

Fabulous trip in beautiful country
Fabulous trip in beautiful country
Fabulous trip in beautiful country

If you have read the reviews from Debbie and Abbie then I'm tempted to write "what they said". Warm, welcoming people, stunning scenery, beautiful birds and wildlife and the best guide ever in Ramesh. Our trip was not without a couple of minor hiccups, especially the train ride for which MBA had not got us tickets. . . . and although we had to wait around a couple of hours, Ramesh worked his magic and got us on the train. Agree with Abbie that Yala was a great safari experience ( shout out to our driver Indy) but not the stand out stay ( for me that was also Anasa) and I'm still not sure what happened with our breakfast which was both late and cold. . . . but I was still on a high following our leopard sighting (had the good fortune to be in the lucky jeep!) so not the worst thing in the world. For me, personally, day three was not so special. Appreciating that Ramesh wanted to give us an authentic experience, I felt we spent too long at the Hindu temple and would have preferred to do more hiking. Glad we got to see how the tea estate workers live however. Very humbling experience. Don't get too excited by the waterfall swim. The waterfall is pretty but more of a cascade than a waterfall and the place to swim is an ugly concrete pool a little distance from the foot of the waterfall. Hiking in the foothills of Knuckles mountain range was awesome and so was the lunch in the village. The kayak trip on the lagoon and into the mangrove forest was also a highlight. Overall a brilliant trip, thanks to Ramesh, our drivers/helpers and the wonderful group I had the pleasure to make this tour with.

Fabulous, varied trip
Fabulous, varied trip

This was my first MBA trip and I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I got was a varied, fascinating and thought provoking trip with the most amazing informative guide and a lovely group of interesting people. The following is just for information - don’t let anything put you off booking!! The trip is rated level 1 and I’d say any reasonably active person could do all the activities with the possible exception of the last third of the long hike, which got very steep, very full of boulders and quite slippy - you need decent boots and I was regretting bringing my walking poles until that moment, when I was very thankful for them! The trip has a bit of everything - we all loved the variety, but if you only want to hike or only want culture, then it probably won’t suit you. The kit list is mostly spot on except don’t bother with waterproof trousers - if it’s wet, you’ll have leech socks on and you won’t need both. It will almost certainly rain. The rain is warm and didn’t stop us, but a decent waterproof is useful. The minibus journeys are long and plentiful and the roads are windy. So if there’s any chance you’ll get car sick, bring some tablets to help. The guides make the trip, and ours was outstanding, as were the two drivers. If you are landing in Columbo early on the first day, see if you can arrange an early check in, the rooms aren’t ready til lunchtime and it’s a long wait after a tiring flight. Several of our group went a day early and were in much better shape at the start of the trip! To finish - I’d say - Go! Sri Lanka is a beautiful, diverse and culturally rich country, the people are incredibly welcoming, and this trip gives you a really good feel for the place. The group I was with were all very interesting and diverse in their own right, most travelling alone and there was always someone to talk to or accompany on an activity. Truly a five star experience.

Happy traveller

A lovely holiday. Spending two or three nights in each place meant the trip was both relaxing and we could see several different places. The coach was very comfortable and the drivers friendly. Our guide was amazing and went the extra mile whenever required. There were a couple of beautiful pools in the hotels we stayed at.

The country? Amazing; far exceeded my expectations. It reminded me of Thailand and Bali before they exploded with tourism everywhere. I truly loved the diversity of landscapes everywhere all within reasonable driving distance.

The people? Could not be topped. The people on this trip were seriously top-notch human beings, and I look forward to hopefully reconnecting with all of them at some point! But also, the people of Sri Lanka are some of the most hospitable, kind, hard working, and humble people I've ever come across in the 40+ countries I've traveled to. Every single person we met here left an impression on me -- from the Tamil Village visit to the guides and naturalists we met, and especially to our guides and bus crew. Ramesh, Anjana, and Chathuranga were truly an amazing trio that went above and beyond for every single person on this trip in some way. They were truly the most "premium" part of this MBA Premium adventure (and may have ruined all future guides for me as I see no way for their service to be topped!).

The accommodation? Most of these were wins. They're definitely more luxury than typical MBA hotels with some standouts more than others. I would ask MBA reconsider what it markets as it's standout stay though -- the hotel at Anasa blew everyone's expectations away and we all kept saying "and just imagine. . we still have the standout stay to come!" . . however, I think the bar was just set very high (on accommodation, service, etc. ) at Anasa, making it was a harder transition because of MBA's marketing amping it up. Please do not get me wrong, I did enjoy the safari option (and recognize that the price we pay with MBA is far less than what you would in Africa for similar experience of safari or accommodations). Be aware you will be sharing a bed with your roommate here with no other option to split the beds apart.

The itinerary? To me, there was a bit more drive time than I expected. I think there are some easy fixes in the itinerary that could be made to reduce those drive times even more and improve the overall trip. For example, we passed right by Kandy and the temple on our way to our accommodation on a rather slow day activity-wise. It didn't make sense to me that we would instead drive over 1. 5 hours round trip the next day if we wanted to visit the temple then (especially since day 2 was pretty light activity wise - I would have loved more walking THAT day). The same thing happened with dinner on the second to last night. My recommendation to MBA would be to tighten up some of the travel time even more in places that we already pass at some point earlier.

Overall: Book the trip! It was an amazing mix of culture, landscapes, adventures, and wildlife. There is something for everyone on this trip. I have no doubt I'll be back again to visit even more of this beautiful country!

An Adventure I’ll Never Forget!
An Adventure I’ll Never Forget!

With my teenager now far more interested in her own adventures than travelling with mum, and my husband still working full-time, I decided it was finally time to create an adventure of my own.

So I booked my first trip with MBA to Sri Lanka, excited at the thought of meeting new people and discovering a part of the world I hadn't visited before, it exceeded every expectation.

It's an incredible country, with breathtakingly diverse landscapes and an endless list of things to see and do. From lush greenery to cultural treasures and beautiful golden beaches, every day brought something different. But what truly made this trip unforgettable was the people.

Firstly, the Sri Lankans themselves are always smiling, welcoming, and eager to help. Their warmth and kindness added something very special to the experience.

Then there was our group. With ages ranging from mid-30s to mid-60s and varying fitness levels, we were a wonderfully mixed bunch, which worked perfectly. There’s something quite special about sharing new experiences with like-minded travellers who all bring their own stories and perspectives.

And finally, our guide, Ramesh. It’s hard to put into words just how exceptional he was. His attention to detail ensured everything ran seamlessly, yet it never felt rushed. He was endlessly patient, organised, and approachable; nothing was ever too much trouble. His local knowledge, connections, sense of humour, and genuine love for his country shone through every single day. I genuinely wonder if any future guide will ever live up to him.

Needless to say, I was online booking my next MBA adventure within two days of returning home!

If you’re considering travelling solo but feeling hesitant, don’t wait. This is the perfect way to explore the world, meet fantastic people, and create memories that will truly last a lifetime.

Initially I was dubious to book a brand new trip whereby there had been no reviews yet posted however, I am so pleased I did. Being the first to experience this journey through Sri Lanka was incredible and I hope this review offers advice and insight into what to expect…without giving away any surprises along the way!

Overview: This trip truly is a cultural immersion into Sri Lanka with a great mix of seeing the juxtaposition of those who have very little, to a glimpse into more commercialised/touristic areas. Thankfully and in line with my preference we spent far more time ‘off the beaten path’ rather than within heavily tourist spots. It was the perfect opportunity to relax, spend quality time with the group and a great balance of activity, action and still allowing for free time to yourself. This was my 5th trip with MBA and in comparison to others the itinerary is more relaxed allowing for some free afternoons which worked well so as to enjoy the facilities at some of the great hotels in which we stayed.

Highlights: What makes Sri Lanka so special is the people, I’ve never experienced hospitality quite like it. From our guide and his supporting crew (who I shall reference later) to the villagers you come into contact with, everyone has such a warmth and pride for their country - it was beautiful to see.

For me personally the Tamil Village visit was my highlight, a truly humbling and profound experience and something I shall never forget. The range of activities were fantastic, well organised and so much fun. For each you are accompanied by additional guides, experts and naturalists to support your learning, whether that be about the culture and nature of Sri Lanka or when learning a new skill.

The safari experience is most certainly a stand out experience however, for me, was not the stand out stay in regard to accommodation and I feel the itinerary description may require slight revision. The tents are great and as I say a wonderful experience to stay so close to the park however, they may not be considered as luxurious especially for those who are perhaps not used to camping. This being said, memory foam mattresses, running water, flushing toilets and air con in the jungle is still quite a triumph and something I personally really enjoyed, it’s just that it was sold as the stand out ‘stay’ which I don’t totally agree with.

Some activities are optional such as yoga and surfing however I’d really encourage giving everything a go. Surfing for me was incredible and my favourite activity of the trip, the instructors were brilliant and so encouraging.

Accommodation: Having been on non premium MBA trips previously, the hotels especially some such as Anasa are far more luxurious which is why is great to have free time on some days to enjoy them. They are all within great locations particularly the hotel in Tangalle. Whilst this is slightly more basic than the others the proximity to the beach and an ocean cannot be beaten. The group and I loved spending time together there. We essentially had the hotel and the beach to ourselves, it was tranquil, remote and pure relaxation.

The stand out stay for me was Anasa personally, it’s the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in, the facilities and food were fantastic. Do not google it beforehand, just allow yourself to be wowed upon arrival, you won’t be disappointed.

Guides/Support: There are not enough words to express what a wonderful and expert guide Ramesh is. I’ve never felt so well looked after and he is the best guide I’ve ever had on any trip I’ve ever been on. Nothing was ever too much trouble and he went out of his way every day to ensure everyone was comfortable, supported and gaining what they wanted from the experience. Ramesh, you are a credit to your employer and most importantly to your country. Sri Lanka is beautiful in its own right, but it’s the countrymen like you who shall cement my decision to return again. Ramesh was supported by two absolute gentlemen, Anjana and Chattaranga who helped support and drive us to each location, we were in fantastic and professional hands each step of the way.

Tips/Hints: This trip is listed as easy and for me it was (34 years of age and very active) however there were some short but steep climbs and descents on the 10k hike, surfing required confidence in water and the kayaking requires some upper body strength. All very doable and no one in our group struggled however the trip wouldn’t be suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Sri Lanka has a closed currency therefore rupees can be difficult to obtain prior to departure. There are ATMs once you reach the airport in Sri Lanka to draw out cash or, if you already have cash you could exchange at one of the many FX counters before leaving the airport. They definitely accept USD at these counters however unsure about sterling…

On three nights of the trip it’s not possible to stay singularly due to availability however, at Anasa they are large family rooms and therefore you shall have your own bedroom anyway. At Yala specify if you wish to have twin beds as we had a double, which was fine for my buddy and I however may be uncomfortable for others.

There are varying climates in Sri Lanka, when in Ella you are very high and the temperature is vastly different to being in the lowlands and on the coast. I was never cold, however consider taking a jumper or something for your shoulders in the evenings in case you get chilly.

The spa facilities in Anasa are amazing, if you are intending to treat yourself to only one massage on your trip, save this for Anasa and not Simpson’s Forest.

In conclusion, an incredible experience in which I thoroughly enjoyed that offered in my opinion truly fantastic value for money. Yet again I am reminded of why I love group travel so much, the bond the group created was superb and it was truly a pleasure to enjoy a beautiful country with a beautiful bunch of people.

Tips

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion, but there is an expectation to tip for good service. We recommend tipping the following for the whole trip:

  • $30-35 (USD) for your trip leader
  • $10-12 (USD) for each member of the bus crew (usually 1 or 2 drivers)
  • $20 (USD) for the activity guides – your leader will collect this in the form of a kitty and distribute it among the local guides and assistants who provide their service during the trip

Of course, you are free to tip more or less and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Optional activities

Optional visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy – 2000 LKR ($7 USD)

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travellers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.

Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

Visas

Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice. To secure your visa (Electronic Travel Authorization, or ETA) apply via the official government website. Usually, the visa is granted within 48 hours of application. Make sure you print a copy or take a screenshot of the approval page for when you clear security on arrival.

Personal Expenses

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 520kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

YES. All of our trips to Sri Lanka are operating.

Tap water in Sri Lanka isn’t always gentle on the stomach. Filtered water is provided at hotels and on the bus, so it’s a good idea to bring a reusable water bottle to refill each morning.

Your main luggage will be stored securely on the bus when you're on the move and you'll have access to it on a daily basis. If there's anything that you don't need with you during the adventure, you can also store excess luggage at your local host's office in Colombo. During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal daypack with your essential items.

In Knuckles and Kandy, you’ll experience authentic village life, meet friendly locals, and observe traditional farming firsthand. The visits are respectful and immersive, with opportunities to engage in daily activities, offering a genuine cultural connection away from typical tourist paths.

The Elephant Transit Home is a government-run rescue and rehabilitation centre for orphaned elephant calves. It prioritises ethical care – it does not offer riding, touching, or performances. Visitors observe scheduled feedings from a distance, supporting the calves’ smooth transition back to the wild.

Yala Block 5 is known for its rich biodiversity and low visitor numbers – ideal for spotting elephants, mugger crocodiles, sloth bears, and, with luck, Sri Lanka’s elusive leopards. Ceylon Wild Safaris is a low-impact, conservation-minded camp. It runs on solar power, avoids plastic waste, employs expert local naturalists, and contributes to community and habitat preservation projects, ensuring wildlife encounters are both responsible and enriching. Your park permit fees are included in the trip price, and a portion of the entrance fees goes directly to the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) for the upkeep and conservation of Yala National Park. These funds are used for maintaining the park's infrastructure, protecting wildlife, and supporting conservation programmes.
