Arrive into Cape Town Airport, where group transfers are organised at set times to take you to the stylish Kloof Street Hotel, centrally located in the city. We recommend arriving early to make the most of your time in Cape Town and to join the optional city orientation walking tour. After settling in, you’ll meet your guide and fellow travellers before exploring some of the city’s most iconic spots and hiking the short trail to Kloof Corner Viewpoint, which offers breathtaking views of the city, Lion’s Head and the Atlantic Ocean. Return to the hotel to freshen up, then head to Gold Restaurant for an unforgettable 14-dish African tasting menu, complete with live drumming, storytelling and vibrant performances, a truly immersive welcome to the continent. As this itinerary allows limited time in Cape Town, you might find you want to arrive a day or two earlier to explore sights such as Table Mountain and Robben Island at your own pace.

Hiking

2hrs · 3.5km · 200m up · 200m down

After breakfast, set off from Cape Town along the breathtaking Ou Kaapse Weg mountain pass to the charming naval settlement of Simon’s Town. Here, hop into a kayak and glide through the calm waters of False Bay, paddling past granite boulders and if you’re lucky, perhaps alongside the playful African penguins at Boulders Beach. It’s a rare chance to get close to these iconic creatures and soak up spectacular coastal views from the water. Next, treat yourself to a relaxed lunch at one of Simon’s Town’s seaside cafés before heading to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, nestled in Table Mountain National Park. Stretch your legs on a scenic hike through wild fynbos and rugged cliffs, leading to the legendary Cape Point Lighthouse and the south-westernmost point of Africa. From here, marvel at the dramatic meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and the incredible biodiversity of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the way back to Cape Town, cruise along Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the world’s most scenic coastal roads, with its 114 sweeping curves and jaw-dropping ocean panoramas. Back in the city, take a breather before settling in for dinner at a handpicked local restaurant, rounding off the day with vibrant flavours and a toast to an unforgettable adventure.

Day 3

Into the Cederberg wilderness

Kagga Kamma cave suite.

Hiking

2hrs · 5km · 100m up · 100m down

Driving

3.5hrs

This morning, swap the buzz of Cape Town for the wild beauty of the Cederberg, one of South Africa’s most under-the-radar wilderness areas, where you'll see few other visitors. En route, enjoy a scenic stop in the Winterhoek Mountains near Tulbagh, where a short hike leads you to a secluded waterfall tucked between rugged peaks. By afternoon, you’ll arrive at Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve - a surreal landscape of weathered sandstone formations and ancient silence, unlike anywhere else in the country. Check into your cave suite, built right into the rock face, blending comfort with the raw drama of nature, which will be your base for the next two nights. As the sun dips, head out on a sundowner nature drive, learning about the reserve’s rare flora, resident wildlife and ancient San rock art sites. Tonight, dine under the stars and experience one of Africa’s clearest night skies. Far from any light pollution, Kagga Kamma offers a front-row seat to the cosmos, with constellations, planets and even the Milky Way on dazzling display. Telescopes and expert guides bring the sky to life in this truly magical, remote corner of the world.

Day 4

Immersive wilderness hike and ancient rock art in the Cederberg

Rock formations in Cederberg wilderness area.

Hiking

3hrs · 10km · 200m up · 200m down

After an early breakfast at the lodge, embark on a guided hike through the untamed beauty of Kagga Kamma. The trail winds deep into rugged valleys, past dramatic sandstone formations and over rocky outcrops, revealing the spirit of the Cederberg. Be prepared for some uneven terrain as you navigate the rock formations. Midway, pause for a picnic lunch in the stillness of nature. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights into the region’s unique flora, geology and wildlife. In the afternoon, dive into the area’s rich cultural heritage on a captivating Rock Art Tour. Led by an expert guide, explore San rock art sites dating back over 6000 years. These ancient paintings offer a rare glimpse into the spiritual beliefs and daily lives of the early hunter-gatherer communities who once called this landscape home. Back at the lodge, enjoy a relaxed evening: unwind with a refreshing dip in the pool or indulge in an optional massage, all set against the backdrop of the Cederberg wilderness. Then, share a group dinner before settling in for your last night in the unique cave suite.

Day 5

Franschhoek’s vineyards, South Africa.

Hiking

2hrs · 5km

Driving

With breakfast finished, say goodbye to Cederberg and head south towards the lush Cape Winelands. As you approach Franschhoek, the landscape shifts into rolling vineyards, neat estates and towering mountains. This charming village, renowned for its wine and French heritage, is the perfect place to slow down and indulge after your time in the wild. Meet your local guide for a relaxed lunch at La Motte Wine Estate, then stretch your legs with a gentle walk through the vineyards and farms of Franschhoek Valley. You’ll visit a couple of boutique wineries, hear stories about the people and history behind the wines, and take in the beautiful scenery. It’s an easy 4-5km stroll, ideal for savouring good wine and great company. The day concludes at Grande Provence Wine Estate, where you can explore the art gallery, wander the gardens or enjoy one last glass of wine before heading to Stellenbosch. Your base for the next two nights is a cosy, modern hotel in the heart of town, perfect for exploring at your own pace.

E-bike Jonkershoek Reserve wild beauty.

E-bike

3hrs · 30km · 400m up · 400m down

Hiking

Kick off the morning with a hearty breakfast before heading out on an active and scenic e-bike adventure in the beautiful Jonkershoek Nature Reserve - one of the Cape Winelands’ best-kept natural secrets. You’ll ride along gravel trails framed by towering peaks, waterfalls and fields of fynbos and roughly cover 25-30km, with a few uphill stretches made much easier thanks to the boost from your bike and rewarded by sweeping views over the valley. Midway through, hop off the bikes and continue on foot on a short guided hike into the quieter corners of the reserve, such as a secluded waterfall where you can enjoy a light picnic lunch. Back in Stellenbosch by early afternoon, the rest of the day is yours to spend as you choose, join your guide for an optional walking tour through the historic heart of town, browse local galleries and artisan shops, or simply unwind with a coffee or a glass of wine at one of the town’s many inviting cafés.

Hiking

Driving

5hrs

Following an early breakfast, it’s time to hit the road for one of the longest drives of the trip, but also one of the most memorable. You’ll journey along Route 62, a quieter alternative to the main highway that winds through mountain passes, open countryside and small towns on the way to the coastal beauty of the Garden Route. To break up the drive, pause in Swellendam for a leg-stretch at Marloth Nature Reserve. A short, peaceful hike leads to Duiwelsbos Waterfall, a forested spot tucked among shady trees and mossy boulders. By afternoon, you’ll arrive at Simbavati Fynbos on Sea, an eco-lodge perched above Sedgefield with sweeping views over hills, lagoons and the ocean beyond. Before dinner, explore the landscape with a guided Fynbos Walk, followed by the Strandloper Beach Hike - a relaxed wander along the shoreline. If the tide allows, you might reach Gerickes Point and take a dip in the clear rock pools. Those who make the short climb to the top are rewarded with one of the best views on the Garden Route. Wrap up the day with dinner overlooking the sea and settle in for a peaceful evening in this coastal haven.

Day 8

After breakfast, head to nearby Plettenberg Bay for a Marine Eco Boat Cruise, an exhilarating ocean adventure with the chance to see the area’s marine life up close. Guided by expert skippers and marine biologists, you’ll explore the rich waters of the Bay of Legends, home to dolphins, seals, seabirds, a thriving Cape Fur Seal colony and in season (June to November) southern right and humpback whales. After your sea safari, continue to the Knysna Waterfront, a lively harbour hub lined with boutique shops, galleries and cafés overlooking the Knysna Lagoon. Take some free time to wander and enjoy lunch at your leisure, with plenty of great spots offering fresh seafood and local favourites. In the afternoon, return to the calmer side of Sedgefield for a gentle kayak excursion on Swartvlei Lake. Paddle across the still, protected waters of this estuarine system, with mountain views, forest fringes and abundant birdlife all around. Back at Simbavati Fynbos on Sea, unwind before dinner, whether that’s relaxing in the infinity pool, enjoying the sea views with a sundowner or simply putting your feet up. Then enjoy a final evening of good food and coastal tranquillity.

Today starts early as you leave the Garden Route behind and journey east towards the game reserves of the Eastern Cape. On the way, stop at Storms River Mouth in Tsitsikamma National Park, where lush forest meets the Indian Ocean. Stretch your legs on a hike through fern-filled woodland to the Storms River Suspension Bridge. Then, gear up for a unique kayaking and lilo adventure, paddling through the river mouth into a narrow gorge flanked by cliffs before switching to an inflatable float to drift deeper into the canyon. Expect cliff jumping, swimming and time to simply absorb the untouched beauty of the landscape. After drying off, continue inland to Amakhala Game Reserve, arriving in the afternoon at Woodbury Tented Camp, a comfortable tented safari lodge overlooking the Bushman’s River. Settle into your en-suite tent and head out on your first afternoon game drive, tracking the Big Five and more with expert guides. End the day with sundowners in the bush and a warm dinner under the stars.

Day 10

Tracking the Big Five

Elephant in Amakhala Game Reserve.

Bush Walking

2hrs

Safari

3hrs

Wake to the sounds of the bush as the reserve stirs with life and begin the day with an early guided bush walk, where your ranger will help you interpret the finer details of the veld - animal tracks, bird calls, plant uses and the subtle signs often missed from a vehicle. After the walk, return to camp for a leisurely breakfast, then enjoy the late morning at your own pace. Relax on your private deck, take a refreshing swim, or simply watch the shifting light across the landscape as wildlife occasionally wanders by. In the afternoon, head out on another open-vehicle game drive - a definite highlight of any stay at Amakhala. As the heat of the day fades, animals become more active. Your expert guide will lead you through a variety of landscapes, open plains, riverine thickets, cliffs and dune forests, in search of the reserve’s impressive diversity of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard), as well as cheetah, hippo, giraffe, zebra and numerous antelope. Return to camp for a farewell dinner under the stars, shared around the fire.

Day 11

Farewell Africa!

Giraffe at Amakhala Game Reserve.

Safari

Squeeze in one last early morning game drive to round off your safari experience, a final chance to track wildlife as the bush comes alive with the sunrise. Return to the lodge for a relaxed breakfast and time to freshen up before check-out. You’ll then transfer to Port Elizabeth Airport (officially Gqeberha), with an expected drop-off by 12:00. Any onward flights should depart after 14:00. Most international travellers connect via Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo) for evening flights to Europe or further afield. Alternatively, you may opt for a domestic flight back to Cape Town or continue exploring South Africa. Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport, Port Elizabeth

Transfers

On Day 1, there will be up to three scheduled group transfers from Cape Town International Airport to your accommodation in the city, with the final transfer departing no later than 15:00. Travellers arriving at similar times will be grouped together where possible. We strongly recommend arriving early to take advantage of the included afternoon activities, such as a guided city tour, a sunset hike on Kloof Corner and a welcome dinner in the evening. If time allows, consider arriving a day or two early to explore more of Cape Town’s highlights at a relaxed pace.

On Day 11, a single group transfer will take you to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) Airport, with an expected arrival by 12:00 noon. We recommend booking onward flights departing after 14:00 to allow sufficient time for check‑in. There are frequent connections via Johannesburg to Europe and other destinations, or you may wish to book a domestic flight if you’re heading back to Cape Town or on to Kruger and beyond (see Travel Options below).

If your flight schedule does not align with the group transfer times, your host can help arrange a private transfer (subject to availability) at an additional cost.

Travel options

This trip starts in Cape Town and ends in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), so you’ll need to plan your flights accordingly. There are two main options for international travel:

Option 1: Return flights via Cape Town (CPT) Book a return international flight into and out of Cape Town, then arrange a domestic flight from Port Elizabeth (PLZ) back to Cape Town on Day 11. This option offers flexibility if you’d like to spend more time exploring the city at the end of your adventure. We strongly recommend booking an additional night’s accommodation in Cape Town before your international flight to protect your return leg in the event of delays or cancellations to your domestic connection.

Option 2: Multi‑city ticket (open‑jaw) Many major airlines offer multi‑city or “open‑jaw” tickets, allowing you to fly into Cape Town (CPT) and out of Port Elizabeth (PLZ). This is a convenient and seamless option, with most international departures from Port Elizabeth connecting via Johannesburg (JNB) on a single ticket. Booking on one ticket helps ensure your bags are checked through and you’re protected in case of missed connections.

There are direct flights to Cape Town from major hubs in Europe and North America, including London, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, New York, Washington D.C. and Atlanta. Travellers from other starting points in Europe and North America can transit through these hubs or connect via Johannesburg, which offers even more frequent international connections.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, a private room is available for an additional charge – please see Optional Extras for pricing. This must be requested at the time of booking and is subject to availability, as availability is limited.

This trip has been rated as Easy

You’ll be active most days, with a mix of gentle to moderate hikes (2–3 hours) on varied but well-trodden trails, from rocky desert paths in the Cederberg to forest walks and coastal cliff trails on the Cape Peninsula. Most walks include some elevation (150–300m), uneven terrain and warm weather in parts, so a reasonable level of fitness and confident footing will help you get the most out of it.

In the Winelands, you’ll explore the stunning Jonkershoek Nature Reserve by e-bike. A fun and scenic ride on gravel roads. While no advanced skills are needed, you should feel comfortable riding a bike on uneven surfaces. The e-bike assist makes uphill sections manageable, even for beginners.

You’ll also kayak in two very different settings: calm ocean waters alongside penguins in False Bay (approx. 2 hours) and a peaceful inland lagoon on the Garden Route. A trip highlight is the kayak-and-lilo adventure at Storms River: paddle through a dramatic coastal gorge, then float deeper into the canyon on a lilo (inflatable mattress). Some scrambling and optional cliff jumps add to the thrill, but the activity is non-technical and fully guided.

There are a few longer drives (up to 5 hours) as the trip travels from Cape Town to the Cederberg, Winelands, Garden Route and finally to a Big Five safari in the Eastern Cape. These journeys are broken up with hikes, local stops and beautiful scenery. Expect a few early starts and busy days, but also downtime to relax, from lazy afternoons at peaceful lodges to sunset drinks in the bush.

No specialist experience is needed — just a good base level of fitness, some agility and a spirit of adventure.

What if i need to skip an activity?

If you’d prefer to skip an activity, no problem! The trip is designed with flexibility in mind. Simply let your guides know in advance, and where possible they’ll help adjust the day so you can still enjoy the experience at your own pace without missing out on the highlights. With plenty of downtime built in, you’ll also have opportunities to relax and recharge whenever you need.

What will I need to carry?

Your main luggage will be transported for you throughout the trip. You’ll just need a small day rucksack to carry personal items, snacks, and water during daily activities and explorations.

This trip runs from February to May and September to November, offering ideal conditions for an active journey through South Africa’s diverse landscapes.

In Cape Town and the Winelands, February and March are warm and mostly dry, with daytime temperatures between 25–32°C (77–90°F) - perfect for hiking, coastal walks and vineyard cycling. April and May bring cooler, crisper days with the first hints of rain, while September to November offers mild weather, blooming landscapes and mostly clear skies. Early mornings during these spring months can be cool, and the odd passing shower is possible.

In the Cederberg, February and March can be hot during the day — often above 30°C (86°F), with cooler nights ideal for stargazing. April and May offer more moderate temperatures, though nights can be cold, especially at higher elevations. September to November brings pleasant daytime weather in the low‑ to mid‑20s°C (mid‑70s°F), with occasional cool fronts or light rain.

Along the Garden Route, the weather is generally mild and comfortable year‑round. February to April tends to be warm and settled (23–28°C / 73–82°F), great for forest walks, kayaking and coastal hikes. May sees a slightly higher chance of rain. From September to November, expect fresh, green scenery, mild temperatures and the occasional short shower.

At Amakhala Private Game Reserve, conditions are excellent throughout both periods. Days are warm (22–30°C / 72–86°F), nights can be cooler and occasional showers may occur. Wildlife sightings are strong year‑round, with September and October often bringing a burst of new life across the reserve.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 244kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

A few activities on this trip, particularly those on or near the water, such as kayaking or the marine cruise are dependent on weather and sea conditions. Your host and local activity providers continuously monitor forecasts to ensure safety. In the event of strong winds, big swells or unsafe conditions, a backup plan will be put in place.

For example, if the marine kayak‑and‑lilo trip at Storms River can’t go ahead as planned, the group will take a guided forest hike to the river mouth and begin the kayak‑and‑lilo experience from there. This route includes around 40 minutes of hiking and takes approximately 2.5 hours in total. The activity is only cancelled entirely if safety is at risk.

Elsewhere on the itinerary, similar contingency plans are in place, and the order or timing of activities can be adapted with your safety in mind.

Kruger National Park is South Africa’s largest and most iconic wildlife reserve, renowned for its unparalleled biodiversity and vast scale. It’s rightly considered a top‑tier safari destination. However, it typically requires an internal flight to access and can be busy in the more accessible areas. For this trip, we’ve chosen to include a safari in Amakhala Game Reserve, a 7500‑hectare private reserve in the malaria‑free Eastern Cape, to avoid the need for domestic flights and create a seamless overland itinerary. Despite its smaller scale, Amakhala offers a rewarding safari experience with the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo), as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra and abundant birdlife.

You’ll explore the reserve on open 4×4 game drives led by expert rangers, with a more intimate, uncrowded feel compared to Kruger. It’s an excellent choice for both first‑time and seasoned safari‑goers seeking outstanding wildlife encounters in a relaxed, small‑scale setting.

Located in the remote Swartruggens region of the Cederberg Mountains, Kagga Kamma is known for its surreal, moon‑like sandstone landscape, rich fynbos vegetation and deep cultural history. You’ll stay in lodge rooms built into natural rock formations or stone huts styled after traditional dwellings. This isn’t just accommodation, it’s an experience. The surrounding 4000‑hectare reserve features ancient San and Khoi rock art sites, some dating back over 6000 years, along with guided stargazing, 4×4 trails and nature walks through one of South Africa’s most untouched regions. You’re truly off‑grid here, with minimal light pollution and a sky full of stars.

Yes, and it’s every bit as magical as it sounds. You’ll paddle out in a stable two‑person sea kayak along the coastline of False Bay, guided by a local expert. While nature offers no guarantees, this experience is always memorable. You’ll likely paddle near African penguins and may also spot Cape fur seals, cormorants, black oystercatchers and the usual gathering of gulls. The water is often so clear you can see fish swimming below, and at low tide, sea stars sometimes appear. If you’re lucky, you might also encounter dolphins, whales (in season), sunfish or even an octopus and occasionally be chased by a hungry seal. The route follows calm waters past Windmill Beach towards the famous Boulders Beach colony, home to over 2000 penguins. If sea conditions allow, you may even land on a quiet stretch near the colony for an up‑close view. It’s a safe, scenic activity, ideal for beginners and nature lovers alike.

For kayaking, it’s best to wear quick‑dry clothing such as swimwear or lightweight activewear. In warmer months, swimming trunks or shorts with a T‑shirt are ideal, while in cooler weather long trousers and a windbreaker will help keep you warm. Just avoid cotton or jeans, as they stay wet and uncomfortable. Expect to get wet from the waist down, and possibly a little damp on top. Bring a towel and a change of dry clothes for after the activity. Water shoes or sandals that can get wet are also recommended.

You'll be in double 'sit-on-top' kayaks, which are very stable and easy to paddle for everyone.

The maximum weight limit for the kayaks is 100kg (15st 10lb).

Your host will provide clean drinking water throughout the trip. Tap water in South Africa is generally safe in most of the areas you’ll be visiting. Bring a reusable water bottle to keep with you for the duration of the adventure.

As this trip starts in Cape Town and ends in Port Elizabeth, you won't be able to leave any excess luggage at the start of the trip.

For your main luggage, we recommend a soft duffel bag or suitcase with a capacity of 55–70L (maximum 15–20kg). You’ll also need a small‑ to medium‑sized daypack (25–30L) for carrying personal items during daily activities. Your main bag will be transported for you throughout the trip, and you’ll have access to it each day at your accommodation.

Check the Kit List for specific items to bring, and if you have any questions before you travel, contact your host, they’ll be happy to help.

Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamt of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.

Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 55 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures, challenging treks, to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.

What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community, and the environment.

This trip takes place in environments where wild animals are present in their natural environment, where protections and controls on their movement may be limited or non-existent. Some species may be dangerous, venomous, or unpredictable. Sightings are a privilege, but safety is key. Always follow your guide’s instructions and any posted signage.

We recommend considering your comfort around wildlife and discussing any concerns with your host before travel, particularly if you have allergies, phobias, or related health conditions.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, with limited shade and high humidity sometimes adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well-hydrated, wearing suitable clothing and using sun protection are essential.

Before travelling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, particularly if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may also help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Plettenberg Bay, on the edge of the Garden Route National Park, offers some of South Africa’s best ocean wildlife encounters. You’ll board a purpose‑built marine safari boat with expert guides who track and interpret the marine life along the route. From June to November, you may spot humpback and Southern right whales, along with pods of dolphins surfing the waves. Cape fur seals and the occasional Bryde’s whale also make appearances.

If rough seas prevent a safe departure, the experience switches to a coastal hike through Robberg Peninsula Nature Reserve, an equally spectacular alternative with dramatic sea cliffs and sweeping bay views. The local operator, pioneers of South African whale watching, hold a government‑issued permit to ensure responsible, regulation‑compliant encounters. The tour ends with an exhilarating high‑speed beach landing before returning to the starting point. If you’re prone to seasickness, we recommend taking tablets beforehand.
