Key Information
Day 1
A warm welcome in Kochi

Touch down at Cochin International Airport where you'll meet your local guide and transfer to the charming heritage quarter of Fort Kochi. Settle into your beautiful boutique hotel on the waterfront and either relax here, or head out to explore the relaxed vibe here in this part of India, depending on your arrival time. The cobbled streets, quaint shops and markets and the iconic Chinese fishing nets, introduced in the 15th century and still used today, are well worth exploring. Enjoy a welcome dinner with your guide and fellow adventurers this evening, and chat through the adventures lying ahead.
Day 2
To the rolling hills of Munnar

Hiking
Driving
Yoga
Soak up the sounds of Fort Kochi coming to life and maybe grab a swim in the rooftop pool to shake off the previous day's journey. After breakfast, you'll hit the road inland through a landscape of spice gardens, rice paddies and forested hills, climbing steadily into the Western Ghats – a 1600km mountain range along India's western coast. The journey is beautiful as you get closer to your destination: Munnar, a cool and misty tea town nestled in the southern highlands. This area is a hub of endemic wildlife, and one of the 36 biodiversity hot-spots of the world, while the indigenous Muduvan and Malapulaya people inhabit the higher reaches of the range and are the original inhabitants of these highlands. The wildlife includes the endangered and endemic Nilgiri Tahrs, Asiatic elephants, gaurs and even big cats, with 17% of the world's tiger population in the Western Ghats. Head out for a short acclimatisation walk in the afternoon through the tea estates and grasslands to get you in the mood for the bigger hikes ahead. Afterwards, settle in to the Windermere Estate – your Standout Stay of the trip. This peaceful plantation hideaway is surrounded by cardamom and coffee plantations, and will be your sumptuous base for the next four nights. Enjoy your first yoga session in these wonderful surroundings before tucking in to a tasty dinner and kicking back for a relaxing evening.
Day 3
Hike to South India's second highest peak

Yoga
Hiking
Wake to the call of the Malabar whistling thrush in the trees, and ease into the day with a grounding yoga session at the estate. After breakfast, hop in a jeep to the trailhead and begin your first full hike of the trip, meandering through the Western Ghats' spectacular shola grassland ecosystem. You're heading for Meesapulimala – South India's second-highest point at 2640m above sea level. The route climbs through tea plantations and cloud forests, with rhododendrons, moss-draped trees and endemic wildlife around, attracted by the myriad streams that flow through the cloud forests. Gradually gaining elevation as the hike progresses, the views build up to a crescendo as you reach the summit. Once at the top of this remote peak, your guide will lead a quiet meditation session for a moment of reflection and appreciation before descending back to the trailhead, where you'll stop for a picnic lunch en route. Later, enjoy another group dinner and a relaxing evening back at Windermere Estate.
Day 4
Hike through the Butterfly Forest and visit a tribal village

Yoga
Hiking
Settling into the rhythm of the trip by now, you'll begin your day again with a morning session of Hatha yoga before tucking into breakfast. Then, hop in the vehicle with your guide and set off on a winding drive through the Lockhart Gap to reach Chinnakanal. Begin today’s hike with a climb to ‘Phantom’s Head’ for sweeping views over Anaerangal Lake. From here, enter the Papathy Shola – the 'Butterfly Forest' – named for the mass butterfly migrations in late autumn. Trek through these cool forest trails shaded by cardamom groves, spotting native birdlife, including the Malabar grey hornbill, and maybe a glimpse of the Malabar giant squirrel. After the hike you'll visit a Muduvan tribal village, located near Anaerangal Lake, where for millennia elephants have come down for grazing and water. The Muduvan practice of carrying their children on their backs have earned them the name the ‘back people’. After spending time in the village and a picnic lunch, you'll return to Windermere for another relaxing evening, perhaps soaking in the pool, waiting for the stars to come out or simply listening to the surrounding forest.
Day 5
Trek through Mathikettan National Park

Yoga
Hiking
After yoga and breakfast to kickstart the day once more, you'll set off on another drive through the Western Ghats' ever changing scenery to reach the lush rainforests of Mathikettan Shola National Park. Mathikettan, meaning ‘the forest where one can get lost’, is a dense, high-altitude rainforest and a globally significant biodiversity hotspot. Environmental activists in Kerala have long fought for the area's protection, saving it from loggers and settlers – eventually leading to its designation as a National Park. You'll hike through these ancient cloud forests thick with ferns, lichen and giant trees, soaking up the wild beauty that surrounds you. The park is home to Asiatic Elephants, rare orchids and more than 100 bird species, plus it's an important wildlife corridor connecting the Periyar Tiger Reserve and the Eravikulam National Park, maintaining the lush ecology of the Western Ghats. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the trail and soak up the sounds and scents of the jungle as you make your way through this pristine landscape, before eventually bidding the forest farewell and returning for your final night at Windermere.
Day 6
Cruise into Kerala’s backwaters

Yoga
Boat Ride
Driving
Your final morning yoga session in the hills sets you up for a change of scene today. Bid farewell to the Windermere Estate which you've called home for the past four nights and drive down from the highlands, feeling the air temperature change as you head for Kerala's unmissable and iconic Kumarakom backwaters – a patchwork of lagoons, canals and paddy fields. Step on board a traditional kettuvallam (houseboat) and cruise gently through this waterworld, watching village life unfold along the banks, spotting herons, duck herders and schoolchildren crossing narrow bridges. After lunch on board, you'll disembark at Coconut Lagoon: your peaceful base on the shores of Lake Vembanad, it's a heritage retreat accessible only by boat. This is a beautiful and tranquil spot – enjoy some downtime here after your exploits in the Western Ghats and your journey to get here today. Tuck into a dinner of South Indian specialities at the Coconut Lagoon restaurant, before settling in for a quiet night's sleep.
Day 7
Slow life in the backwaters

Hiking
Yoga
Begin your day with lakeside yoga in an open-air thatched pavilion at your base. The backwaters of Kerala offer an ideal setting for yoga as it brings together serenity, natural beauty a wholesome way of life in the region, all blending together to encourage deep relaxation. After breakfast, you'll spend the day experiencing the deep connection the local people have with the land and water, and their sustainable livelihoods. Meet with locals as they expertly twine coir made from coconut fibres or weave bamboo mats. Walk along the banks of the lagoon as more backwater scenes unfold, with local fishermen casting their nets for the day's catch. Reaching a nearby waterside village, you'll settle in for a memorable lunch of Keralan dishes prepared by the local residents and served traditional-style on banana leaves. Back at Coconut Lagoon later in the day, enjoy some downtime – we've even included a massage in the on-site Ayurvedic spa, to finish your trip in truly relaxing style, ahead of settling in for your farewell dinner to reminisce on the past week of exploring this gorgeous part of the world.
(Please note, the massage at the spa involves a short consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, to check for asthma, heart conditions etc. in your medical history. This is a formality required to receive the doctor's clearance ahead of the Ayurvedic massage.)

What is the food like?

Keralan food involves a variety of spices like pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, and bay leaves, among others, that grow abundantly in Kerala and are used together with coconut to create sublime dishes. Rice is the staple and is used in many forms you wouldn't expect, such as puttu (steamed funnel cakes). Parotta, a flaky layered flatbread, and kappa or tapioca also hold a special place in the heart of Keralans. Many meals are traditionally served on a banana leaf, with the hot food on the leaf releasing another layer of flavours – you'll experience this in style at a waterside village in the backwaters for lunch on Day 7. Expect a wide range of seasonal vegetables like gourds, leafy greens, and lentils, all of which are native to the land. Coconut naturally finds its way into almost every single dish in Keralan cuisine. While many meals will be vegan by nature, there will also be beef, pork, and seafood dishes on the menus. Kuttanadan duck is another speciality of the region. Packed lunches on certain days while out hiking will be vegetarian meals provided by your host, with chapatis and vegetables, potatoes and eggs. Each dinner is taken at your accommodation base – these are all in relatively remote spots without good options nearby to go out for dinner (indeed, your base in the backwaters is only accessible by boat). However, the food at each of your bases is exceptional, and having dinner at your base each night encourages a relaxing vibe with some downtime either side of your meal every evening.
Please note that alcohol is not available at the Windermere Resort in Munnar. Alcohol is available at shops if you wish to buy your own, which you can consume at the hotel if you fancy a drink in the evenings.
Vegetarian and vegan food is available throughout the trip – India is a standout country for vegan and vegetarian food – and most dietary requirements can be catered for. Gluten-free diets can be catered for, but are not always well understood in this region. Please let your host know in advance on your passenger information form.
What is the accommodation like?

An elegant welcome in charming Kochi
Your adventure begins in the heart of Fort Kochi at Fragrant Nature, a heritage-style hotel overlooking the harbour. Housed in a restored colonial building, it blends old-world character with modern comfort. Rooms are spacious and quiet, with large windows, wooden floors and thoughtful touches that reflect Kerala’s coastal charm. There’s a rooftop pool where you can cool off and watch fishing boats drift by, and a small spa if you fancy a massage after your flight. Step outside and you’re a short stroll from street art, spice markets and waterfront cafes – the perfect spot to ease into your trip. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with private, ensuite bathrooms.

Your Standout Stay: serene base amidst tea plantations
Your base for four nights of the trip (and your Standout Stay) is the Windermere Estate, a peaceful hideaway tucked into the hills above Munnar. This family-run retreat is surrounded by cardamom plantations and offers sweeping views of Kerala’s lush Western Ghats. It’s a laid-back place where polished wood floors and plantation-style furniture meet warm, local hospitality. After a day of hiking and yoga, unwind in your cosy room, stretch out on the terrace with a cup of homegrown tea, lap up the dreamy outdoor swimming pool or curl up with a book in the garden. The estate’s restaurant serves up hearty Keralan dishes using produce from the land around you. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with ensuite bathrooms.

Laidback lakeside living in the backwaters
You’ll round off your adventure at Coconut Lagoon, a tranquil waterside retreat set among the canals of Kerala’s backwaters. Reached by boat, the property is made up of traditional wooden cottages with tiled roofs, open-air bathrooms and verandas facing the lake or garden. It’s a quiet, restorative place where you can drift between yoga sessions, birdwatching walks and lazy afternoons in a hammock. There’s a pool for cooling dips, and the kitchen dishes up Keralan classics like fish moilee and freshly made appam. As the sun sets over the water, expect slow evenings lit by lanterns and the sound of surrounding bird population. You'll stay in twin-share cottage-style rooms with private, ensuite bathrooms.
Upgrades
For solo travellers looking for their own space, a private room can be booked for an extra charge – see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).
This trip has been rated as Moderate
You’ll be hiking for a few hours each day, with the most challenging hike being the summit of Meesapulimala – the second-highest peak in South India. This day involves around 580m of elevation gain and descent, but the pace is steady and there’s plenty of time to soak up the views.
Across the trip, the trails vary from gently undulating tea estate paths to steeper sections through cloud forest and open grassland. Expect a mix of terrain, including muddy forest trails and grassy ridgelines in Mathikettan National Park and Papathy Shola (the Butterfly Forest). You’ll be walking through some of the Western Ghats’ most biodiverse landscapes, so sturdy shoes, some endurance and good balance go a long way. It's best that you've had some experience of hiking on a mix of terrain in the past.
You’ll also start each day with a one-hour Hatha yoga session. These are gentle and restorative, designed to complement the hikes and help ease out any tight spots. No previous yoga experience is needed.
Temperatures in the highlands are cooler than the coast, with daytime highs in the low 20s°C and cooler mornings – perfect for hiking. The backwaters are warmer and more humid, but the pace slows down in this section of the trip with yoga sessions, a backwaters cruise, Ayurvedic massages and lighter walks allowing you to soak up local life here.
What if i need to skip an activity?
You are welcome to skip any of the activities on this trip and relax at your base on any given day.
What will I need to carry?
You'll need to carry a daypack on each hike, with water, a rain jacket and personal items inside.
Kerala's weather and climate can be divided into three seasons: winter (November to February), summer (March to the end of May) and the monsoon (end of May to mid-November, with the most rainfall from June to August).
Winter is generally the best time to visit Kerala, with comfortable temperatures, pleasant weather, and lower humidity. Expect temperatures between 22°C (71°F) and 30°C (86°F). However, in the higher altitude areas of the Western Ghats, temperatures will be much cooler, ranging from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F). In the summer months of April and May, these higher altitude areas become a great place to avoid the heat, as temperatures remain in the late teens at the hill stations while they rise in lower areas. Kerala experiences two monsoon seasons, the most prevalent of which being the Southwest Monsoon, typically from June to August, during which time we don't run trips. The Northeast Monsoon from October to November typically brings short sharp thunderstorms and showers, usually in the evenings.
We’re still waiting to collect any reviews from other travellers on this trip. However, all our hosts go through an extensive vetting process to ensure that your adventure is awesome.

Tips
Tipping is part of the culture in India. Your guide will offer to run a tipping kitty whereby everyone contributes an equal amount, and they then take care of tipping on behalf of the group. This is often the easiest way to avoid the hassle of needing small change and knowing when and what is an appropriate amount to tip. The tipping kitty will cover tips for drivers, any additional local guides, and hotel staff (excluding restaurant tips). Your guide will keep a running record of all monies spent, which you can ask to see at any time. Participation in this kitty is at your discretion, and you are welcome to manage your own tipping separately if you prefer. For this trip, the kitty will be in the region of INR 4,000 per person (for 8 days). Please note the tipping kitty excludes tips for your main guide.
Tipping Your Main Guide
If you have received excellent service and wish to tip your guide, the amount is entirely a personal preference, and you are free to tip any amount you feel is appropriate. As a rough guideline, your host recommends INR 4,000 - 4,500 per person, but you may decide to tip more or less as you see fit. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
Personal expenses
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional food and drinks, shopping and laundry.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travellers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 266kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
Absolutely not! This is far from a standard yoga retreat. Don't expect to follow a rigid and strict activity schedule or a restrictive detoxing diet. This adventure was designed for people who practice and love yoga, or who are just curious about it and want to experience the amazing benefits it brings for the first time. But it’s also fun, with plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding nature trails on foot, and enjoy delicious food and wine, all in the company of like-minded people. Relaxing and not taking yourself too seriously is kind of mandatory here!
There is one main hiking guide for groups of up to 10 people, and an additional guide for groups of 11-14 people. A qualified yoga instructor will join the group for each of the yoga sessions.
You’ll be practising Hatha yoga on this trip. Hatha is a slower-paced style that focuses on posture, breathwork and relaxation. Rooted in ancient Indian tradition, Hatha is one of the oldest forms of yoga, originally developed to prepare the body for long periods of seated meditation. It emphasises alignment and balance, making it a great match for active adventures where your muscles might be feeling the miles. Unlike faster-flowing styles like Vinyasa or Ashtanga, Hatha yoga allows you to hold poses for longer and move at a more mindful pace. This gives you time to settle into each position, connect with your breath and gently release tension, which is ideal after a day of hiking. Sessions will be suitable for all levels, so whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned yogi, you’ll be in good hands.
As you don't return to the same hotel in Kochi from Day 1, it's not possible to leave any excess luggage at the start of the trip. However, you'll be able to leave your luggage in your room at each of the accommodation bases throughout the trip.
Filtered water is available at all of the hotels you stay at on this trip, allowing you to fill up your refillable bottle each day. Additionally, your tour leader and driver will carry a large container of purified water for the group to refill their bottles from.
This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.
Before travelling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
