When is The Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro? A Month-by-Month Overview

The ideal time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro varies depending on weather conditions, trail accessibility, and visitor numbers across Tanzania’s seasonal calendar.

While the driest and most popular periods fall between June and October, as well as December to February, quieter but still worthwhile windows exist in the shoulder seasons, particularly from mid-May to early June. In contrast, the rainy periods from March to May and November to mid-December see fewer trekkers but bring slippery paths and reduced visibility.

Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres) lies within Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro National Park, approximately 300 kilometres south of the equator. The country experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons that significantly affect trekking conditions.

Rainy Seasons (Low Footfall, High Rainfall):

March to May: This is the long rainy season, typically bringing sustained heavy downpours. Trails can become muddy and treacherous, and clouds often obscure views. That said, it's the quietest time on the mountain, which may appeal to those seeking solitude.

November to mid-December: The short rainy season brings lighter but still frequent showers. Early December often remains damp.

Dry Seasons (High Footfall, Optimal Conditions):

June to October: Widely considered the best time to climb, thanks to minimal rainfall, low humidity, and excellent visibility. July and August coincide with European summer holidays, making them the busiest months.

December to February: This period offers warmer conditions and generally clear skies. The Christmas holiday season draws many climbers, although early December may still see residual rain from the short wet season.

Shoulder Season (Fewer Climbers, Improving Conditions):

Mid-May to early June: This transitional period marks the shift from the long rains to the dry season. Trails start to dry out and footfall remains low, offering a favourable window for those wanting more peaceful trekking conditions.
