Key Information
Day 1
To Elba Island!
Driving
Boat Ride
Meet your host at Pisa Airport and drive to the coastal town of Piombino. From here you'll catch the ferry to Elba, the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, which is the second-largest marine park in Europe. With its crystal-clear seas, scenic hiking trails, and lush mountains, Elba remains largely undiscovered by international tourists. Settle into your comfortable hotel in Porto Azzurro, where you’ll spend your first two nights. Stroll through the lively marina, then meet your guide and enjoy a welcome dinner as you learn about the adventure ahead. Tomorrow, you'll embark on the first leg of the Grande Traversata Elbana (Great Elban Traverse or GTE), a breathtaking trek across the island, featuring rugged coastlines, mountain views, local villages, and pristine beaches.
Day 2
Mediterranean trails from Cavo to Porto Azzurro
Hiking
After breakfast, take a short transfer to Cavo – on the island's eastern coast, it's the official starting point of the Elba GTE trail. Begin your ascent toward Monte Grosso, passing through the lush Valle delle Fiche before climbing steeply to Monte Strega’s summit, with sweeping views of ancient iron mines below. Following a scenic ridge, reach Monte Capannello, a natural lookout with stunning views over the bays of Bagnaia and Nisporto and the village of Rio nell'Elba below. Continue along the trail among shaded pine forest, then ascend to Cima del Monte, the day’s highest point at 516m where you’ll enjoy views over eastern Elba, including Volterraio Castle and the bay of Portoferraio. Descend through the archaeologically rich Piana della Principessa, then hike past striking red rock formations, olive groves, and vineyards to reach Porto Azzurro for your second night. Use the evening to repack for the next three days, during which you’ll carry an overnight kit while your main luggage is transferred to your final hotel. Then head into Porto Azzurro, where you can explore the local restaurants.
Day 3
Porto Azzurro to Marina di Campo, via Monte Orello
Hiking
The second stage of the GTE takes you to Marina di Campo through some of Elba’s most scenic and culturally rich landscapes. After leaving Porto Azzurro you’ll pass vineyards and fields, reaching Casa Marchetti which marks the beginning of the day’s rugged, remote trail. The path climbs through dense pine forests to Monte Orello, where remnants of military posts provide insight into Elba’s strategic history and offer stunning views over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Descending from Monte Orello, follow an old military route to Colle Reciso, where inland and coastal views combine with reminders of the island’s past. Pass through aromatic Mediterranean scrub filled with strawberry trees, yellow broom and ancient oaks, and encounter an Etruscan outpost that hints at Elba’s ancient history. The trail’s final stretch brings you to Marina di Campo, a lively seaside town known for its sandy beaches and charming promenade. Relax with a stroll or a swim at the hotel's pool, and ask your guide for local dining recommendations for dinner.
Day 4
To Poggio via Monte Capanne (1019m)
Hiking
After breakfast, set out on the most challenging hike of the trip – Elba’s summit. Departing Marina di Campo, with its 15th-century watchtower, follow an ancient path that once linked the port to the medieval village of San Piero. Pass through historic Roman granite quarries and Villanovan necropolises, then ascend to the granite monolith of Pietra Murata and continue through lush cistus and ferns to Colle della Grottaccia. The rugged via del Malpasso leads to the Filicaie crossroads, a plateau with stunning views. From here, begin the final ascent to Monte Capanne, Elba’s highest peak at 1019m. The rocky climb is challenging but rewards you with panoramic views: Gorgona and Capraia to the north, the Italian mainland to the east, the islands of Giglio, Montecristo, and Pianosa to the south, and the distant, snow-dusted peaks of Corsica to the west. After savouring the views, descend along the northern slope through granite slabs and heather, reaching the village of Poggio. A bus awaits to take you to your hotel in Marciana Marina. Celebrate the day’s achievement with pasta, wine, and your fellow travellers – if you have the energy!
Day 5
The final push to Pomonte
Hiking
Lace up for the final stage of your Elba crossing! After breakfast, take a short, scenic bus ride to the historic village of Marciana, where your trail begins in the village square. Head toward the imposing Pisan Fortress, a symbol of Elba’s rich past, then follow the Via Crucis, a charming path that leads to the Sanctuary of Madonna del Monte (630m), a masterpiece of 16th- and 17th-century architecture where Napoleon stayed in 1814. From here, continue to Masso dell'Aquila, a dramatic prehistoric rock shelter offering sweeping views over Elba’s northern coastline and the bay of Sant'Andrea. The trail winds through a windswept clearing, then descends gently to the tranquil Bollero Spring, shaded by chestnut trees. As you climb again, the landscape transforms, with towering holm oaks and strawberry trees adding to the sense of peaceful seclusion. The final paved path reveals breathtaking views of Elba’s western coast as you descend into the peaceful seaside village of Pomonte, marking the end of your trek. Celebrate tonight with a farewell dinner, toasting to new friends and unforgettable memories of Elba’s Mediterrenean beauty.
Day 6
Goodbye Elba!
Hiking
Boat Ride
Congratulations, you've successfully completed the Elba Island traverse! Enjoy a leisurely morning – perhaps with a well-deserved lie-in or a revitalising swim in the crystal-clear waters of Pomonte. Whether you choose to swim, explore, snorkel, or simply relax by the shore, it's the perfect way to soak up your final moments on the island. Around lunchtime, your host will transfer you back to Portoferraio, where you'll catch the ferry to Piombino. From there, a transfer will take you back to Pisa Airport, with a drop-off expected by 18:00 at the latest. If you're not quite ready to leave, you could consider extending your stay on the island – Elba is dotted with charming seaside villages, perfect for a few extra days of unwinding beside the Mediterranean.

Transfers
Due to the distance and transport logistics involved in travel to and from Elba Island (two transfers and a ferry), we recommend joining the set arrival and departure group transfers arranged by your host and included in the trip.
On Day 1 you'll be met in the morning at Pisa Airport. If you fly in on the first day of the trip, please make sure you book a flight that lands by 11:30 at the latest (your host will inform you of transfer logistics and exact timings prior to your trip). If you arrive in Pisa after the included group transfer departs for Elba, independent travel arrangements will need to be made for you at an additional cost. A set departure transfer from Elba back to Pisa Airport is also included on Day 6 and you'll be dropped off at the airport around 18:00. We recommend booking a flight departing Pisa no earlier than 20:00.
If you would like to arrive early or extend your stay, your host can arrange accommodation for an extra cost in Elba, although transport to/from the island needs to be arranged independently (see Optional Extras; your host can provide detailed instructions on how to reach Elba on request). Alternatively, we recommend booking any extra accommodation in Pisa and then taking the pre-arranged transfer on Day 1 of the trip. To travel between Pisa Airport and Pisa City Centre, you can use the service of Pisamover, a comfortable and quick shuttle service that connects the airport with the city in less than 3 minutes. The shuttle runs from 06:00 until 00:00.
Travel options
There are regular direct flights to Pisa Airport from major airports across the UK and Europe.
The island of Elba is reached by ferry from Piombino Port on the mainland to Portoferraio, Cavo or Rio Marina. There are frequent trains connecting Piombino to the rest of Italy – for example, it is 2h by train from Pisa Centrale, and about 2h 15m from Roma Termini.

What is the food like?
Dishes found in Elba make use of simple, local ingredients grown on this fertile island, as well as fresh fish and seafood, all influenced by the migration of different cultures to the island over the centuries. The result is a very distinct cuisine with a combination of flavours and ingredients found nowhere else in Italy. Some of the best-known specialities include stoccafisso alla riese (stockfish with garlic, parsley, potatoes, onion, tomato, chilli), sburrita (fish soup with spices and vegetables, accompanied by Tuscan bread) and gurguglione (mixed vegetable pot). You'll get the chance to try some great local restaurants during the trip, whilst during the trek you'll be provided with picnic lunches (usually consisting of sandwiches, fruits and a snack) which will fuel you up for the hikes. Please note that the trails on this trip are remote, and you won't find any cafes or huts en route to purchase snacks or refill your water, so it's recommended you pack some extra snacks and enough drinking water (minimum 2L per person) before you set off on each hike.
Vegetarians, vegans and other dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for – please just request this on your passenger info form.

This trip has been rated as Challenging
The Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE), or Great Elban Traverse, is a moderately challenging long-distance hiking trail that spans the island of Elba in the Tuscan Archipelago. The trail varies greatly, from coastal paths to forested sections and rugged mountain terrain, keeping the scenery interesting but also challenging at times. The GTE route covers about 50km (31 miles) from east to west, and on this trip you'll complete it in four stages. You'll be hiking an average of 18-19km each day, with some significant elevation changes and sections requiring steep ascents and descents, especially on Monte Capanne (the island's highest point at 1019m). The trek requires a good level of endurance as each day's hike can take between 6–8 hours. While some sections can be moderate, others demand good stamina. There are no exposed sections, but there are some passages on rocky, uneven terrain and scree, between boulders or on gravel, especially at the highest altitudes of western Elba, requiring sturdy footwear and caution. The Mediterranean sun can make the trek more strenuous in the warmer months of June and September, and wind can add to the difficulty on exposed parts. Based on these factors, the GTE trek on Elba is best suited for intermediate to advanced hikers who have experience with long-distance, moderately difficult trails. Challenging trips generally require committing to some training and preparation in the weeks building up to your trip. Accompanying cardio, strength and flexibility training will help you be in the best shape possible to enjoy this trip.
What will I need to carry?
You will be carrying your own 35-50L pack between the hotels for three consecutive days (Day 3 to Day 5) with everything you need for the trek, so this adds to the overall trip's difficulty level. One luggage transport service is included so you will be reunited with your main suitcase upon reaching Pomonte on Day 5. So don't over pack, a lighter pack will be more enjoyable, but also don't skip the essentials and risk getting caught out in bad weather. It's a good idea to do some hiking before the trip so you are comfortable with the gear you plan to bring on the trek. Check out our kit list section for the basics to consider putting in your pack.
Elba Island, located off the coast of Tuscany in Italy, has a Mediterranean climate, which means mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. Between April and June, the island experiences mild spring temperatures, with April starting around 13–18°C and gradually warming to 20–26°C by June. Rain becomes less frequent, and by late spring, sunny days dominate. In September and October, temperatures remain warm early on, around 21–27°C in September and by October, temperatures cool to 17–22°C, and rain becomes more common, though sunny days are still prevalent. Both periods provide comfortable weather, fewer tourists, and ideal conditions for hiking and beach time.
We’re still waiting to collect any reviews from other travellers on this trip. However, all our hosts go through an extensive vetting process to ensure that your adventure is awesome.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 198kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
- A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
Yes, but as a reminder first, in terms of bags your host recommends all you need is: a hiking backpack (approx. 40-50L) to carry your essential items for three days of hiking, plus one main piece of luggage. Your host will arrange for the main luggage to be transferred to your final hotel on Day 5. You'll spend the first two nights at the same hotel, so you'll have access to your main luggage until the morning of Day 3 and will only trek with a light daypack (no overnight kit) on Day 2 of the trip. From the morning of Day 3 to the evening of Day 5, you'll have to carry all you need for the three days of hiking plus any essential items and clothes you need for the evenings. See the kitlist for additional information.
The tap water on Elba Island is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles to fill up at the hotels before you set off for the hike. This is so you can avoid buying single use plastic bottles. Please note that due to the lack of refuges or rest points, there are no water supplies during the trek so it's important you carry enough drinking water (min 3L) for the whole day of trekking until you reach your hotel.
