Itinerary
Day 1
To the Retezat Mountains
Driving3hrsGuesthouseTwin shareLunch and dinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Your adventure begins at Cluj-Napoca Airport, where you'll meet your group before setting off on the three-hour drive to the Retezat mountains. The route winds around the Western Carpathians, tracking from Cluj-Napoca to the northern edge of the Retezat range – a taste of the wild terrain you'll be exploring over the coming days. You'll arrive in Rausor, a mountain village nestled at the foot of the range, where you can settle into your guesthouse, get a hot meal and hear from your guide about Retezat National Park – Romania's oldest protected wilderness.
Day 2
Bag your first peak: Retezat (2482m)
Hiking7-8hrs · 14km · 1100m up · 1100m downGuesthouseTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Day 2 kicks off with one of the trip's biggest ascents – Retezat Peak, tackled from the north. You may take a chairlift to gain some early elevation (subject to availability), then push up through dense spruce forest to a glacial lake and onto the ridge leading to the summit at 2482m. On a clear day, the views from the top stretch across the Carpathians and south to the Danube plain. The descent follows a different route back, with open views over the central Retezat range and Hateg County. Back at the guesthouse, you'll have time to rest before sitting down to another good dinner.
Day 3
Ascend Little Retezat: Piatra Iorgovanului (2014m)
Hiking5-6hrs · 9km · 950m up · 800m downDriving2hrsMountain hutMulti shareAll meals includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Today takes you to a lesser-known side of the range – Little Retezat, a distinct subrange shaped by sedimentary limestone rather than the granite of the main peaks. The terrain up here is open and karst-like, with weathered rock formations and flora you won't find elsewhere in the park. After a two-hour drive to the southern part of the mountains, you'll start hiking, and once above the treeline, you'll scale the ridge to reach Piatra Iorgovanului (2014m), with contrasting landscapes to the other granite domes you'll clamber among. On the descent, you'll follow a short drive with a 45-minute hike to Buta Mountain Cabin, your base for the next two nights. Time to rest up and eat well.
Day 4
Summit the twin peaks of Papusa (2508m) and Peleaga (2509m)
Hiking9-10hrs · 17km · 1710m up · 1710m downMountain hutMulti shareAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Today, you'll have an early start ahead of the most challenging hike of the trip. From Buta Cabin, you’ll head once more in the direction of Custura, but instead of climbing it, you will follow a route on the massif's main ridge towards its highest peaks: Peleaga and Papusa. From here, the real work begins – after a steep climb, you'll reach the second-highest peak in the Retezat: Papusa, at 2508m. If the weather is clear, bask in the breathtaking views while you take a well-deserved rest. Descending to the next saddle, it's then time to start the steep ascent to Peleaga (2509m), the highest peak of Retezat, passing the iconic cliffs of Coltii Pelegii. The effort is well worth it, as the summit offers stunning panoramic views (on exceptionally clear days, you might even spot the Danube shimmering in the distance). The adventure doesn’t stop here, though: you’ll continue toward Bucura Lake, Romania’s largest glacial lake, nestled beneath a dramatic amphitheatre of jagged peaks. Along the way, you’ll pass several other lakes – Ana, Lia, Viorica, and Florica – each adding to the stunning alpine scenery. From Bucura Lake, you’ll head down to Peleaga glade, a scenic valley that serves as a popular camping spot, before making the final push back to Buta Cabin, where a well-earned farewell dinner and final peaceful night in the mountains await.
Day 5
Explore Mary’s waterfalls and Butii Gorge
Hiking3hrsDriving4.5hrsBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
After breakfast, pack up and descend on foot from Buta Cabin to your pick-up point. A short drive brings you to two of the region's most striking natural sites: Mary's waterfall and the Butii Gorge – limestone formations, waterfalls and canyon walls that make for a memorable final morning in the mountains. Next you'll stop for lunch at a local restaurant, with time to try some of the region's seasonal dishes before the drive back to Cluj-Napoca Airport, arriving at around 18:00.

FAQs
What's Plan B in case of bad weather or flight disruptions?
In adverse weather conditions, it may not be safe to ascend the most exposed paths; therefore your guide will monitor conditions and adjust the route as needed. In the event of unusually high snowfall in June, you won’t be using crampons or ice axes on this non-technical trek, and alternative routes may be taken instead. Your host will stay in touch before departure and inform you if extreme weather is expected. There are contingency plans for the parts of the itinerary most likely to be affected by unseasonable conditions.
If your inbound flight is significantly delayed and there isn’t enough daylight to reach Buta Cabin on Day 1, your host will arrange an overnight stay in Cluj-Napoca, with an early transfer to the cabin on Day 2. In this case, the order of hikes and activities may be adjusted to ensure everything can still be covered comfortably.

What do I do about drinking water?
The tap water in the mountains is generally safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles to fill up at the mountain hut to avoid buying single use plastic bottles.
Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Romanian food has been shaped by Carpathian farming, Danube plain harvests and a crossroads of Balkan, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences, so it’s often hearty, seasonal, flavourful and built around meats, soups, stews, maize and preserved vegetables.
You’ll eat mainly locally sourced Romanian food throughout the trip, sitting down to dishes that make sense only here in this area, at this time of year. Your local host builds each menu around ingredients from small farmers, shepherds and foragers. Expect plenty of variety in the veg, fruits and locally sourced meat.
Breakfast is usually continental, with a selection of cheese and local meats, eggs, wild mushrooms, bread, jam, coffee and tea. Dinner typically includes a soup, a meat or fish option alongside local vegetables, polenta, rice or potatoes, pickles, bread, and a dessert. On the hiking days, you’ll carry a packed lunch with sandwiches, fruits and a few salty and sweet snacks.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is aware in advance. There are plenty of appealing meat-free dishes to look forward to including smoky zacuscă (roasted veg spread), salată de vinete (aubergine dip), mushroom or potato stews, ciorbă de fasole (bean soup), mămăligă with cheese, and sweet apple or cheese pies.
Vegan
Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance, but you should expect fewer options and variety that you may be used to, especially in more rural areas where meals are traditionally built around meat and dairy. Vegan-friendly choices may include simple vegetable dishes and salads, sarmale with rice and mushrooms, ghiveci vegetable stew, fasole bătută (whipped beans), aubergine dips, pickles, grilled peppers and zacuscă (a traditional Romanian vegetable spread made from slow-cooked roasted aubergines, peppers, onions and tomatoes).
Kosher
Fully certified kosher options are limited in Romania and are mainly found in larger cities. On this trip, kosher-supervised kitchens and ingredients may not be available, so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.
Halal
Romania is not a predominantly Muslim country so fully certified halal options are limited and are mainly found in larger cities. On this trip, halal-certified kitchens, meat and supply chains may not be available so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten-Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below)
Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options may be more limited compared to those without dietary requirements. While your local hosts will do their best, it’s worth knowing that gluten-free provision may vary as it can be difficult to source specialist products and some kitchens may be unable to guarantee no cross-contamination, especially in rural areas. Therefore, meals will more-often be based on naturally gluten-free dishes more often than specialist substitutes. That said, many standard meals already include several options without gluten, even without special preparation, including meats, potato dishes, rice, eggs and salads. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Lactose-Free
Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as vegetable dishes, rice and potato dishes, legumes, and salads.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy (including Coeliac disease), please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.
*Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).
For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way. What's the weather like?
The Retezat Mountains offer excellent hiking conditions from late June to early October, with relatively stable weather and accessible peaks and trails. During this period, daytime temperatures in the valleys range from 18-25°C (64-77°F), while higher altitudes remain cooler, averaging 10-18°C (50-64°F). On warmer days, temperatures can reach 28°C (82°F) in the valleys, but nights at elevation can drop to 5-10°C (41-50°F). While summer weather is generally favourable, afternoon thunderstorms are more common in July and August. By late September and early October, temperatures begin to drop but the trails are less busy. In early summer, alpine meadows are lush and dotted with wildflowers, while glacial lakes remain full from melting snow. Forested valleys provide cooler, shaded trails, and by late September, autumn colours start to appear at higher elevations. Your host will monitor conditions and adjust the itinerary if necessary to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in the mountains.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 224kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
